Mark 9:1 (NIRV) New International Reader's Version

1 Jesus said to them, "What I'm about to tell you is true. Some who are standing here will not die before they see God's kingdom coming with power."
2 After six days Jesus took Peter, James and John with him. He led them up a high mountain. They were all alone. There in front of them his appearance was changed.
3 His clothes became so white they shone. They were whiter than anyone in the world could bleach them.
4 Elijah and Moses appeared in front of Jesus and his disciples. The two of them were talking with Jesus.
5 Peter said to Jesus, "Rabbi, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters. One will be for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah."
6 Peter didn't really know what to say, because they were so afraid.
7 Then a cloud appeared and surrounded them. A voice came from the cloud. It said, "This is my Son, and I love him. Listen to him!"
8 They looked around. Suddenly they no longer saw anyone with them except Jesus.
9 They came down the mountain. On the way down, Jesus ordered them not to tell anyone what they had seen. He told them to wait until the Son of Man had risen from the dead.
10 So they kept the matter to themselves. But they asked each other what "rising from the dead" meant.
11 Then they asked Jesus, "Why do the teachers of the law say that Elijah has to come first?"
12 Jesus replied, "That's right. Elijah does come first. He makes all things new again. So why is it written that the Son of Man must suffer much and not be accepted?
13 I tell you, Elijah has come. They have done to him everything they wanted to do. They did it just as it is written about him."
14 When Jesus and those who were with him came to the other disciples, they saw a large crowd around them. The teachers of the law were arguing with them.
15 When all the people saw Jesus, they were filled with wonder. And they ran to greet him.
16 "What are you arguing with them about?" Jesus asked.
17 A man in the crowd answered. "Teacher," he said, "I brought you my son. He is controlled by a spirit. Because of this, my son can't speak anymore.
18 When the spirit takes hold of him, it throws him to the ground. He foams at the mouth. He grinds his teeth. And his body becomes stiff. I asked your disciples to drive out the spirit. But they couldn't do it."
19 "You unbelieving people!" Jesus replied. "How long do I have to stay with you? How long do I have to put up with you? Bring the boy to me."
20 So they brought him. As soon as the spirit saw Jesus, it threw the boy into a fit. He fell to the ground. He rolled around and foamed at the mouth.
21 Jesus asked the boy's father, "How long has he been like this?" "Since he was a child," he answered.
22 "The spirit has often thrown him into fire or water to kill him. But if you can do anything, take pity on us. Please help us."
23 " 'If you can'?" said Jesus. "Everything is possible for the one who believes."
24 Right away the boy's father cried out, "I do believe! Help me overcome my unbelief!"
25 Jesus saw that a crowd was running over to see what was happening. Then he ordered the evil spirit to leave the boy. "You spirit that makes him unable to hear and speak!" he said. "I command you, come out of him. Never enter him again."
26 The spirit screamed. It shook the boy wildly. Then it came out of him. The boy looked so lifeless that many people said, "He's dead."
27 But Jesus took him by the hand. He lifted the boy to his feet, and the boy stood up.
28 Jesus went indoors. Then his disciples asked him in private, "Why couldn't we drive out the evil spirit?"
29 He replied, "This kind can come out only by prayer."
30 They left that place and passed through Galilee. Jesus did not want anyone to know where they were.
31 That was because he was teaching his disciples. He said to them, "The Son of Man is going to be handed over to men. They will kill him. After three days he will rise from the dead."
32 But they didn't understand what he meant. And they were afraid to ask him about it.
33 Jesus and his disciples came to a house in Capernaum. There he asked them, "What were you arguing about on the road?"
34 But they kept quiet. On the way, they had argued about which one of them was the most important person.
35 Jesus sat down and called for the Twelve to come to him. Then he said, "If you want to be first, you must be the very last. You must be the servant of everyone."
36 Jesus took a little child and had the child stand among them. Then he took the child in his arms. He said to them,
37 "Anyone who welcomes one of these little children in my name welcomes me. And anyone who welcomes me doesn't welcome only me but also the One who sent me."
38 "Teacher," said John, "we saw a man driving out demons in your name. We told him to stop, because he was not one of us."
39 "Do not stop him," Jesus said. "No one who does a miracle in my name can in the next moment say anything bad about me.
40 Anyone who is not against us is for us.
41 "What I'm about to tell you is true. Suppose someone gives you a cup of water in my name because you belong to me. That one will certainly not go without a reward.
42 "What if someone leads one of these little ones who believe in me to sin? If he does, it would be better for him to be thrown into the sea with a large millstone tied around his neck.
43 "If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It would be better for you to enter God's kingdom with only one hand than to go into hell with two hands. In hell the fire never goes out.

45 "If your foot causes you to sin, cut it off. It would be better for you to enter God's kingdom with only one foot than to have two feet and be thrown into hell.

47 "If your eye causes you to sin, poke it out. It would be better for you to enter God's kingdom with only one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into hell.
48 In hell, " 'The worms do not die. The fire is not put out.' --(Isaiah 66:24)
49 Everyone will be salted with fire.
50 "Salt is good. But suppose it loses its saltiness. How can you make it salty again? Have salt in yourselves. And be at peace with each other."

4 And G2532 CONJ there appeared G3700 V-API-3S unto them G846 P-DPM Elijah G2243 N-NSM with G4862 PREP Moses G3475 N-DSM : and G2532 CONJ they were G2258 V-IXI-3P talking with G4814 V-PAP-NPM Jesus G2424 N-DSM .
5 And G2532 CONJ Peter G4074 N-NSM answered G611 V-AOP-NSM and said G3004 V-PAI-3S to Jesus G2424 N-DSM , Master G4461 HEB , it is G2076 V-PXI-3S good G2570 A-NSN for us G2248 P-1AP to be G1511 V-PXN here G5602 ADV : and G2532 CONJ let us make G4160 V-AAS-1P three G5140 A-APF tabernacles G4633 N-APF ; one G3391 for thee G4671 P-2DS , and G2532 CONJ one G3391 for Moses G3475 N-DSM , and G2532 CONJ one G3391 for Elijah G2243 N-DSM .

8 And G2532 CONJ suddenly G1819 ADV , when they had looked round about G4017 V-AMP-NPM , they saw G1492 V-2AAI-3P no man G3762 A-ASM any more G3765 ADV , save G235 CONJ Jesus G2424 N-ASM only G3440 with G3326 PREP themselves G1438 F-3GPM .
9 And G1161 CONJ as they G846 P-GPM came down G2597 V-PAP-GPM from G575 PREP the G3588 T-GSN mountain G3735 N-GSN , he charged G1291 V-AMI-3S them G846 P-DPM that G2443 CONJ they should tell G1334 V-ADS-3P no man G3367 A-DSM what things G3739 R-APN they had seen G1492 V-2AAI-3P , till G1508 the G3588 T-NSM Son G5207 N-NSM of man G444 N-GSM were risen G450 V-2AAS-3S from G1537 PREP the dead G3498 A-GPM .
10 And G2532 CONJ they G3588 T-ASM kept G2902 V-AAI-3P that saying G3056 N-ASM with G4314 PREP themselves G1438 F-3APM , questioning one with another G4802 V-PAP-NPM what G5101 I-NSN the G3588 T-ASM rising G450 V-2AAN from G1537 PREP the dead G3498 A-GPM should mean G2076 V-PXI-3S .
11 And G2532 CONJ they asked G1905 V-IAI-3P him G846 P-ASM , saying G3004 V-PAP-NPM , Why say G3004 V-PAI-3P the G3588 T-NPM scribes G1122 N-NPM that G3754 CONJ Elijah G2243 N-ASM must G1163 V-PQI-3S first G4412 ADV come G2064 V-2AAN ?
12 And G1161 CONJ he G3588 T-NSM answered G611 V-AOP-NSM and told G2036 V-2AAI-3S them G846 P-DPM , Elijah G2243 N-NSM verily G3303 PRT cometh G2064 V-2AAP-NSM first G4412 ADV , and restoreth G600 V-PAI-3S all things G3956 A-APN ; and G2532 CONJ how G4459 ADV-I it is written G1125 V-RPI-3S of G1909 PREP the G3588 T-ASM Son G5207 N-ASM of man G444 N-GSM , that G2443 CONJ he must suffer G3958 V-2AAS-3S many things G4183 A-APN , and G2532 CONJ be set at naught G1847 V-APS-3S .
13 But G235 CONJ I say G3004 V-PAI-1S unto you G5213 P-2DP , That G3754 CONJ Elijah G2243 N-NSM is indeed G2532 CONJ come G2064 V-2RAI-3S , and G2532 CONJ they have done G4160 V-AAI-3P unto him G846 P-DSM whatsoever G3745 K-APN they listed G2309 V-AAI-3P , as G2531 ADV it is written G1125 V-RPI-3S of G1909 PREP him G846 P-ASM .
14 And G2532 CONJ when he came G2064 V-2AAP-NSM to G4314 PREP his disciples G3101 N-APM , he saw G1492 V-2AAI-3S a great G4183 A-ASM multitude G3793 N-ASM about G4012 PREP them G846 P-APM , and G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-APM scribes G1122 N-APM questioning G4802 V-PAP-APM with them G846 P-DPM .
15 And G2532 CONJ straightway G2112 ADV all G3956 A-NSM the G3588 T-NSM people G3793 N-NSM , when they beheld G1492 V-2AAP-NSM him G846 P-ASM , were greatly amazed G1568 V-API-3S , and G2532 CONJ running G4370 V-PAP-NPM to V-PAP-NPM him G782 V-PAP-NPM saluted G782 V-PAP-NPM him G846 P-ASM .

17 And G2532 CONJ one G1520 A-NSM of G1537 PREP the G3588 T-GSM multitude G3793 N-GSM answered G611 V-AOP-NSM and said G2036 V-2AAI-3S , Master G1320 N-VSM , I have brought G5342 V-AAI-1S unto G4314 PREP thee G4571 P-2AS my G3588 T-ASM son G5207 N-ASM , which hath G2192 V-PAP-ASM a dumb G216 A-ASN spirit G4151 N-ASN ;

22 And G2532 CONJ ofttimes G4178 ADV it hath cast G906 V-2AAI-3S him G846 P-ASM into G1519 PREP the fire G4442 N-ASN , and G2532 CONJ into G1519 PREP the waters G5204 N-APN , to G2443 CONJ destroy G622 V-AAS-3S him G846 P-ASM : but G235 CONJ if thou canst do any thing G1536 , have compassion G4697 V-AOP-NSM on G1909 PREP us G2248 P-1AP , and help G997 V-AAM-2S us G2254 P-1DP .
23 Jesus G2424 N-NSM said G2036 V-2AAI-3S unto him G3588 T-NSN , If G1487 COND thou canst G1410 V-PNI-2S believe G4100 V-AAN , all things G3956 A-NPN are possible G1415 A-NPN to him that believeth G4100 V-PAP-DSM .
24 And G2532 CONJ straightway G2112 ADV the G3588 T-NSM father G3962 N-NSM of G3588 T-GSN the G3588 T-GSN child G3813 N-GSN cried out G2896 V-AAP-NSM , and said G3004 V-IAI-3S with G3326 PREP tears G1144 N-GPN , Lord G2962 N-VSM , I believe G4100 V-PAI-1S ; help G997 V-PAM-2S thou mine G3588 T-DSF unbelief G570 N-DSF .
25 When G1161 CONJ Jesus G2424 N-NSM saw G1492 V-2AAP-NSM that G3754 CONJ the people G3793 N-NSM came running together G1998 V-PAI-3S , he rebuked G2008 V-AAI-3S the G3588 T-DSN foul G169 A-DSN spirit G4151 N-DSN , saying G3004 V-PAP-NSM unto him G3588 T-NSN , Thou dumb G216 A-NSN and G2532 CONJ deaf G2974 A-NSN spirit G4151 N-NSN , I G1473 P-1NS charge G2004 V-PAI-1S thee G4671 P-2DS , come G1831 V-2AAM-2S out of G1537 PREP him G846 P-GSM , and G2532 CONJ enter G1525 V-2AAS-2S no more G3371 ADV into G1519 PREP him G846 P-ASM .

27 But G1161 CONJ Jesus G2424 N-NSM took G2902 V-AAP-NSM him G846 P-ASM by the G3588 T-GSF hand G5495 N-GSF , and lifted him up G1453 V-AAI-3S ; and G2532 CONJ he arose G450 V-2AAI-3S .
28 And G2532 CONJ when he G846 P-ASM was come G1525 V-2AAP-ASM into G1519 PREP the house G3624 N-ASM , his G3588 T-NPM disciples G3101 N-NPM asked G1905 V-IAI-3P him G846 P-ASM privately G2596 PREP , Why G3754 CONJ could G1410 V-AOI-1P not G3756 PRT-N we G2249 P-1NP cast him out G1544 V-2AAN ?
29 And G2532 CONJ he said G2036 V-2AAI-3S unto them G846 P-DPM , This G3588 T-NSN kind G1085 N-NSN can G1410 V-PNI-3S come forth G1831 V-2AAN by G1722 PREP nothing G3762 A-DSN , but G1508 by G1722 PREP prayer G4335 N-DSF and G2532 CONJ fasting G3521 N-DSF .
30 And G2532 CONJ they departed G1831 V-2AAP-NPM thence G1564 ADV , and passed G3899 V-INI-3P through G1223 PREP Galilee G1056 N-GSF ; and G2532 CONJ he would G2309 V-IAI-3S not G3756 PRT-N that G2443 CONJ any man G5100 X-NSM should know G1097 V-2AAS-3S it .
31 For G1063 CONJ he taught G1321 V-IAI-3S his G3588 T-APM disciples G3101 N-APM , and G2532 CONJ said G3004 V-IAI-3S unto them G846 P-GSM , The G3588 T-NSM Son G5207 N-NSM of man G444 N-GSM is delivered G3860 V-PPI-3S into G1519 PREP the hands G5495 N-APF of men G444 N-GPM , and G2532 CONJ they shall kill G615 V-FAI-3P him G846 P-DPM ; and G2532 CONJ after that he is killed G615 V-APP-NSM , he shall rise G450 V-FMI-3S the G3588 T-DSF third G5154 A-DSF day G2250 N-DSF .
32 But G1161 CONJ they G3588 T-NPM understood G50 V-IAI-3P not that saying G4487 N-ASN , and G2532 CONJ were afraid G5399 V-INI-3P to ask G1905 V-AAN him G846 P-ASM .
33 And G2532 CONJ he came G2064 V-2AAI-3S to G1519 PREP Capernaum G2584 N-PRI : and G2532 CONJ being G1096 V-2ADP-NSM in G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DSF house G3614 N-DSF he asked G1905 V-IAI-3S them G846 P-APM , What G5101 I-ASN was it that ye disputed G1260 V-INI-2P among G4314 PREP yourselves G1438 F-3APM by G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DSF way G3598 N-DSF ?
34 But G1161 CONJ they G3588 T-NPM held their peace G4623 V-IAI-3P : for G1063 CONJ by G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DSF way G3598 N-DSF they had disputed G1256 V-AOI-3P among G4314 PREP themselves G240 C-APM , who G5101 I-NSM should be the greatest G3187 A-NSM-C .
35 And G2532 CONJ he sat down G2523 V-AAP-NSM , and called G5455 V-AAI-3S the G3588 T-APM twelve G1427 A-NUI , and G2532 CONJ saith G3004 V-PAI-3S unto them G846 P-DPM , If any man G1536 desire G2309 V-PAI-3S to be G1511 V-PXN first G4413 A-NSM , the same shall be G2071 V-FXI-3S last G2078 A-NSM of all G3956 A-GPM , and G2532 CONJ servant G1249 N-NSM of all G3956 A-GPM .
36 And G2532 CONJ he took G2983 V-2AAP-NSM a child G3813 N-ASN , and set G2476 V-AAI-3S him G846 P-ASN in G1722 PREP the G3588 midst G3319 A-DSN of them G846 P-GPM : and G2532 CONJ when he had taken him in his arms G1723 V-ADP-NSM , he said G2036 V-2AAI-3S unto them G846 P-ASN ,
37 Whosoever G1437 COND shall receive G1209 V-ADS-3S one G1520 A-ASN of such G5108 D-GPN children G3813 N-GPN in G1909 PREP my G3588 T-DSN name G3686 N-DSN , receiveth G1209 V-PNI-3S me G1691 P-1AS : and G2532 CONJ whosoever G3739 R-NSM shall receive G1209 V-ADS-3S me G1691 P-1AS , receiveth G1209 V-PNI-3S not G3756 PRT-N me G1691 P-1AS , but G235 CONJ him that sent G649 V-AAP-ASM me G3165 P-1AS .
38 And G1161 CONJ John G2491 N-NSM answered G611 V-ADI-3S him G846 P-DSM , saying G3004 V-PAP-NSM , Master G1320 N-VSM , we saw G1492 one G5100 X-ASM casting out G1544 V-PAP-ASM devils G1140 N-APN in G1722 thy G3588 T-DSN name G3686 N-DSN , and he G3739 R-NSM followeth G190 V-PAI-3S not G3756 PRT-N us G2254 P-1DP : and G2532 CONJ we forbade G2967 V-AAI-1P him G846 P-ASM , because G3754 CONJ he followeth G190 V-PAI-3S not G3756 PRT-N us G2254 P-1DP .
39 But G1161 CONJ Jesus G2424 N-NSM said G2036 V-2AAI-3S , Forbid G2967 V-PAM-2P him G846 P-ASM not G3361 PRT-N : for G1063 CONJ there is G2076 V-PXI-3S no man G3762 A-NSM which G3739 R-NSM shall do G4160 V-FAI-3S a miracle G1411 N-ASF in G1909 PREP my G3588 T-DSN name G3686 N-DSN , that G2532 CONJ can G1410 V-FDI-3S lightly G5035 ADV speak evil G2551 V-AAN of me G3165 P-1AS .
40 For G1063 CONJ he G3739 R-NSM that is G2076 V-PXI-3S not G3756 PRT-N against G2596 PREP us G5216 P-2GP is G2076 V-PXI-3S on our part G5228 PREP .
41 For G1063 CONJ whosoever G3739 R-NSM shall give you a cup of water to drink G4222 V-AAS-3S in G1722 PREP my G3450 P-1GS name G3686 N-DSN , because G3754 CONJ ye belong to G2075 V-PXI-2P Christ G5547 N-GSM , verily G281 HEB I say G3004 V-PAI-1S unto you G5213 P-2DP , he shall not G3364 lose G622 V-AAS-3S his G3588 T-ASM reward G3408 N-ASM .
42 And G2532 CONJ whosoever G3739 R-NSM shall offend G4624 V-AAS-3S one G1520 A-ASM of these G3588 T-GPM little ones G3398 A-GPM that believe G4100 V-PAP-GPM in G1519 PREP me G1691 P-1AS , it is G2076 V-PXI-3S better G2570 A-NSN for him G846 P-DSM that G1487 COND a millstone G3037 N-NSM were hanged G4029 V-PNI-3S about G4012 PREP his G3588 T-ASM neck G5137 N-ASM , and G2532 CONJ he were cast G906 V-RPI-3S into G1519 PREP the G3588 T-ASF sea G2281 N-ASF .
