Isaiah 31:1 (NIRV) New International Reader's Version

1 How terrible it will be for those who go down to Egypt for help! How terrible for those who depend on horses! They trust in how many chariots they have. They trust in how strong their horsemen are. But they don't look to the Holy One of Israel. They don't ask the Lord for his help.
2 He too is wise. He can bring horrible trouble. He does what he says he'll do. He'll rise up against everyone who does what is evil. He'll fight against those who help them.
3 The men of Egypt are only human. They aren't God. Their horses are only flesh and blood. They aren't spirits. The Lord will reach out his powerful hand to punish everyone. The Egyptians provide help. But they will be tripped up. The people of Judah receive the help. But they will fall down. All of them will be destroyed.
4 The Lord says to me, "A powerful lion stands over its food and growls. A lot of shepherds can be brought together to drive it away. But the lion is not frightened by their shouts. It is not upset by the noise they make. In the same way, I will come down from heaven. I will fight on Mount Zion and on its hills. Nothing will drive me away. I am the Lord who rules over all.
5 Like a bird hovering over its nest, I will guard Jerusalem. I will keep it safe. I will pass over it and save it. I am the Lord who rules over all."
6 People of Israel, return to the Lord. He's the one you have so strongly opposed.
7 The time will come when every one of you will turn your backs on your gods of silver and gold. You sinned when you made them with your own hands.
8 The Lord says, "The Assyrians will be killed with swords. But it will not be men who use them. The swords that kill them will not be used by human beings. The Assyrians will run away from those swords. But their young men will be caught and forced to work hard.
9 Their hiding places will be destroyed when terror strikes them. When their commanders see their enemy's battle flags, they will be filled with panic," announces the Lord. His fire blazes out from Mount Zion. His furnace burns in Jerusalem.

2 Yet he H1931 PPRO-3MS also H1571 W-CONJ is wise H2450 AMS , and will bring H935 W-VHY3MS evil H7451 AMS , and will not H3808 NADV call back H5493 VHQ3MS his words H1697 CMP-3MS : but will arise H6965 against H5921 PREP the house H1004 CMS of the evildoers H7489 , and against H5921 PREP the help H5833 of them that work H6466 VQCMP iniquity H205 NMS .
3 Now the Egyptians H4714 W-EMS are men H120 NMS , and not H3808 W-NPAR God H410 EDS ; and their horses H5483 flesh H1320 NMS , and not H3808 W-NPAR spirit H7307 NFS . When the LORD H3068 W-EDS shall stretch out H5186 his hand H3027 CFS-3MS , both he that helpeth H5826 shall fall H3782 , and he that is helped H5826 shall fall down H5307 , and they all H3605 CMS-3MP shall fail H3615 together H3162 .
4 For H3588 CONJ thus H3541 hath the LORD H3068 EDS spoken H559 unto H413 PREP-1MS me , Like as H834 RPRO the lion H738 and the young lion H3715 roaring H1897 VQY3MS on H5921 PREP his prey H2964 , when H834 RPRO a multitude H4393 of shepherds H7462 is called forth H7121 VNY3MS against H5921 PREP him , he will not H3808 NADV be afraid H2865 VNY3MS of their voice H6963 , nor H3808 NADV abase H6031 himself for the noise H1995 of them : so H3651 ADV shall the LORD H3068 EDS of hosts H6635 come down H3381 to fight H6633 for H5921 PREP mount H2022 CMS Zion H6726 , and for H5921 PREP the hill H1389 thereof .
5 As birds H6833 flying H5774 , so H3651 ADV will the LORD H3068 EDS of hosts H6635 defend H1598 Jerusalem H3389 ; defending H1598 also he will deliver H5337 it ; and passing over H6452 he will preserve H4422 it .
6 Turn H7725 ye unto him from whom H834 L-RPRO the children H1121 of Israel H3478 LMS have deeply H6009 revolted H5627 .
7 For H3588 CONJ in that H1931 D-PPRO-3MS day H3117 B-AMS every man H376 NMS shall cast away H3988 his idols H457 of silver H3701 , and his idols H457 of gold H2091 , which H834 RPRO your own hands H3027 have made H6213 VQQ3MP unto you for a sin H2399 .
8 Then shall the Assyrian H804 GFS fall H5307 with the sword H2719 , not H3808 NADV of a mighty man H376 NMS ; and the sword H2719 , not H3808 ADV of a mean man H120 NMS , shall devour H398 him : but he shall flee H5127 from M-CMP the sword H2719 GFS , and his young men H970 shall be H1961 discomfited H4522 .
9 And he shall pass over H5674 to his stronghold H5553 for fear H4032 , and his princes H8269 CMP-3MS shall be afraid H2865 of the ensign H5251 , saith H5002 the LORD H3068 EDS , whose H834 RPRO fire H217 is in Zion H6726 , and his furnace H8574 in Jerusalem H3389 .
