2 Samuel 14:1 (NIRV) New International Reader's Version

1 Joab, the son of Zeruiah, knew that the king longed to see Absalom.
2 So Joab sent someone to Tekoa to have a wise woman brought back from there. Joab said to her, "Pretend you are filled with sadness. Put on black clothes. Don't use any makeup. Act like a woman who has spent many days sobbing over someone who has died.
3 Then go to the king. Give him the message I'm about to give you." And Joab told her what to say.
4 The woman from Tekoa went to the king. She bowed down with her face toward the ground. She did it to show him respect. She said, "King David, please help me!"
5 The king asked her, "What's bothering you?" She said, "I'm a widow. My husband is dead.
6 I had two sons. They got into a fight with each other in the field. No one was there to separate them. One of my sons struck the other one down and killed him.
7 "Now my whole family group has risen up against me. They say, 'Hand over the one who struck his brother down. Then we can put him to death for killing his brother. That will also get rid of the one who will receive the family property.' They want to kill the only living son I have left, just as someone would put out a burning coal. That would leave my husband without any son on the face of the earth to carry on his name."
8 The king said to the woman, "Go home. I'll give an order to make sure you are taken care of."
9 But the woman from Tekoa said to him, "You are my king and master. No matter what you do, I and my family will take the blame for it. You and your royal family won't be guilty of doing anything wrong."
10 The king replied, "If people give you any trouble, bring them to me. They won't bother you again."
11 She said, "Please pray to the Lord your God. Pray that he will keep our nearest male relative from killing my other son. Then my son won't be destroyed." "You can be sure that the Lord lives," the king said. "And you can be just as sure that not one hair of your son's head will fall to the ground."
12 Then the woman said, "King David, please let me say something else to you." "Go ahead," he replied.
13 The woman said, "You are the king. So why have you done something that brings so much harm on God's people? When you do that, you hand down a sentence against yourself. You won't let the son you drove away come back.
14 All of us must die. We are like water that is spilled on the ground. It can't be put back into the jar. But God doesn't take life away. Instead, he finds a way to bring back anyone who was driven away from him.
15 "King David, I've come here to say this to you now. I've done it because people have made me afraid. I thought, 'I'll go and speak to the king. Perhaps he'll do what I'm asking.
16 Perhaps he'll agree to save me from the man who is trying to cut off me and my son from the property God gave us.'
17 "So now I'm saying, 'May what you have told me bring me peace and rest. You are like an angel of God. You know what is good and what is evil. May the Lord your God be with you.' "
18 Then the king said to the woman, "I'm going to ask you a question. I want you to tell me the truth." "Please ask me anything you want to," the woman said.
19 The king asked, "Joab told you to say all of this, didn't he?" The woman answered, "What you have told me is exactly right. And that's just as sure as you are alive. It's true that Joab directed me to do this. He told me everything he wanted me to say.
20 He did it to change the way things now are. You are as wise as an angel of God. You know everything that happens in the land."
21 Later the king said to Joab, "All right. I'll do what you want. Go. Bring the young man Absalom back."
22 Joab bowed down with his face toward the ground. He did it to honor the king. And he asked God to bless the king. He said, "You are my king and master. Today I know that you are pleased with me. You have given me what I asked for."
23 Then Joab went to Geshur. He brought Absalom back to Jerusalem.
24 But the king said, "He must go to his own house. I don't want him to come and see me." So Absalom went to his own house. He didn't go to see the king.
25 In the whole land of Israel there wasn't any man as handsome as Absalom was. That's why everyone praised him. From the top of his head to the bottom of his feet he didn't have any flaws.
26 He used to cut his hair when it became too heavy for him. Then he would weigh it. It weighed five pounds in keeping with the standard weights that were used in the palace.
27 Three sons and a daughter were born to Absalom. The daughter's name was Tamar. She became a beautiful woman.
28 Absalom lived in Jerusalem for two years without going to see the king.
29 Then Absalom sent for Joab. He wanted to send him to the king. But Joab refused to come to Absalom. So Absalom sent for him a second time. But Joab still refused to come.
30 Then Absalom said to his servants, "Joab's field is next to mine. He has barley growing there. Go and set it on fire." So Absalom's servants set the field on fire.
31 Joab finally went to Absalom's house. He said to Absalom, "Why did your servants set my field on fire?"
32 Absalom said to Joab, "I sent a message to you. It said, 'Come here. I want to send you to the king. I want you to ask him for me, "Why did you bring me back from Geshur? I would be better off if I were still there!" ' Now then, I want to go and see the king. If I'm guilty of doing anything wrong, let him put me to death."
33 So Joab went to the king and told him that. Then the king sent for Absalom. He came in and bowed down to the king with his face toward the ground. And the king kissed Absalom.

2 And Joab H3097 sent H7971 W-VQY3MS to Tekoah H8620 , and fetched H3947 W-VQY3MS thence H8033 M-ADV a wise H2450 woman H802 NFS , and said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP-3FS her , I pray thee H4994 IJEC , feign thyself to be a mourner H56 , and put on H3847 now H4994 IJEC mourning H60 apparel H899 , and anoint H5480 not H408 W-NPAR thyself with oil H8081 NMS , but be H1961 as a woman H802 that H2088 DPRO had a long H7227 AMP time H3117 NMP mourned H56 for H5921 PREP the dead H4191 :
3 And come H935 to H413 PREP the king H4428 D-NMS , and speak H1696 on H413 PREP-3MS this H2088 D-PMS manner H1697 unto H413 PREP him . So Joab H3097 put H7760 W-VQY3MS the words H1697 AMP in her mouth H6310 .
4 And when the woman H802 D-NFS of Tekoah H8621 spoke H559 W-VQY3FS to H413 PREP the king H4428 D-NMS , she fell H5307 W-VQY3FS on H5921 PREP her face H639 to the ground H776 NFS-3FS , and did obeisance H7812 , and said H559 W-VQY3FS , Help H3467 , O king H4428 .
5 And the king H4428 D-NMS said H559 unto her , What H4100 IPRO aileth thee ? And she answered H559 W-VQY3FS , I H589 PPRO-1MS am indeed H61 a widow H490 NFS woman H802 NFS , and mine husband H376 is dead H4191 W-VQY3MS .
6 And thy handmaid H8198 had two H8147 ONUM sons H1121 NMP , and they two H8147 ONUM-3MP strove together H5327 in the field H7704 B-NMS , and there was none H369 W-NPAR to part H5337 them , but the one H259 smote H5221 the other H259 , and slew H4191 him .
7 And , behold H2009 IJEC , the whole H3605 family H4940 is risen H6965 against H5921 PREP thine handmaid H8198 , and they said H559 , Deliver H5414 him that smote H5221 his brother H251 CMS-3MS , that we may kill H4191 him , for the life H5315 B-CFS of his brother H251 CMS-3MS whom H834 RPRO he slew H2026 ; and we will destroy H8045 the heir H3423 also H1571 CONJ : and so they shall quench H3518 my coal H1513 which H834 RPRO is left H7604 , and shall not H1115 L-NPAR leave H7604 to my husband H376 neither name H8034 CMS nor remainder H7611 upon H5921 PREP the earth H127 D-NFS .
8 And the king H4428 D-NMS said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP the woman H802 D-NFS , Go H1980 to thine house H1004 , and I H589 W-PPRO-1MS will give charge H6680 concerning H5921 thee .
9 And the woman H802 D-NFS of Tekoah H8621 said H559 W-VQY3FS unto H413 PREP the king H4428 D-NMS , My lord H113 , O king H4428 D-NMS , the iniquity H5771 be on H5921 PREP-1MS me , and on H5921 W-PREP my father H1 CMS-1MS \'s house H1004 CMS : and the king H4428 and his throne H3678 be guiltless H5355 .
10 And the king H4428 D-NMS said H559 W-VQY3MS , Whosoever saith H1696 aught unto H413 thee , bring H935 him to H413 PREP-1MS me , and he shall not H3808 W-NPAR touch H5060 thee any H3254 VHY3MS more H5750 ADV .
11 Then said H559 W-VQY3MS she , I pray thee H4994 IJEC , let the king H4428 D-NMS remember H2142 the LORD H3068 EDS thy God H430 CMP-2MS , that thou wouldest not H3808 W-NPAR suffer the revengers H1350 of blood H1818 to destroy H7843 L-VPFC any more H7235 , lest they destroy H8045 my son H1121 NMS-1MS . And he said H559 W-VQY3MS , As the LORD H3068 EDS liveth H2416 AMS , there shall not H518 PART one hair H8185 of thy son H1121 NMS-1MS fall H5307 VQY3MS to the earth H776 NFS-3FS .
12 Then the woman H802 D-NFS said H559 W-VQY3MS , Let thine handmaid H8198 , I pray thee H4994 IJEC , speak H1696 one word H1697 VQPMS unto H413 PREP my lord H113 the king H4428 D-NMS . And he said H559 W-VQY3MS , Say on H1696 .
13 And the woman H802 D-NFS said H559 W-VQY3FS , Wherefore H4100 WL-IGAT then hast thou thought H2803 such H2063 a thing against H5921 PREP the people H5971 NMS of God H430 EDP ? for the king H4428 D-NMS doth speak H1696 this H2088 D-PMS thing H1697 D-NMS as one which is faulty H818 , in that the king H4428 D-NMS doth not H1115 L-NPAR fetch home again H7725 his banished H5080 .
14 For H3588 CONJ we must needs die H4191 VQFA , and are as water H4325 spilt H5064 on the ground H776 NFS-3FS , which H834 RPRO cannot H3808 NADV be gathered up H622 again ; neither H3808 ADV doth God H430 EDP respect H5375 VQY3MS any person H5315 GFS : yet doth he devise H2803 means H4284 , that his banished H5080 be not expelled H5080 from H4480 M-PREP-3MS him .
15 Now H6258 W-ADV therefore that H834 RPRO I am come H935 to speak H1696 of this H2088 D-PMS thing H1697 D-NMS unto H413 PREP my lord H113 the king H4428 D-NMS , it is because H3588 CONJ the people H5971 have made me afraid H3372 : and thy handmaid H8198 said H559 W-VQY3FS , I will now H4994 IJEC speak H1696 VPI1MS unto H413 PREP the king H4428 D-NMS ; it may be H194 ADV that the king H4428 D-NMS will perform H6213 VQY3MS the request H1697 CMS of his handmaid H519 .
16 For H3588 CONJ the king H4428 D-NMS will hear H8085 VQY3MS , to deliver H5337 L-VHFC his handmaid H519 out of the hand H3709 M-CFS of the man H376 D-NMS that would destroy H8045 me and my son H1121 NMS-1MS together H3162 ADV out of the inheritance H5159 of God H430 NAME-4MP .
17 Then thine handmaid H8198 said H559 W-VQY3FS , The word H1697 CMS of my lord H113 the king H4428 D-NMS shall now H4994 IJEC be H1961 VPY3MS comfortable H4496 : for H3588 CONJ as an angel H4397 of God H430 D-NMP , so H3651 ADV is my lord H113 the king H4428 D-NMS to discern H8085 good H2896 D-NMS and bad H7451 : therefore the LORD H3068 W-EDS thy God H430 CMP-2MS will be H1961 VPY3MS with H5973 PREP-2FS thee .
18 Then the king H4428 D-NMS answered H6030 W-VQY3MS and said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP the woman H802 D-NFS , Hide H3582 not H408 NPAR from H4480 M-PREP-1MS me , I pray thee H4994 IJEC , the thing H1697 VQPMS that H834 RPRO I H595 PPRO-1MS shall ask H7592 thee . And the woman H802 D-NFS said H559 W-VQY3MS , Let my lord H113 the king H4428 now H4994 IJEC speak H1696 VPY3MS .
19 And the king H4428 D-NMS said H559 W-VQY3MS , Is not the hand H3027 of Joab H3097 with H854 PART-2MS thee in all H3605 NMS this H2063 DPRO ? And the woman H802 D-NFS answered H6030 and said H559 W-VQY3MS , As thy soul H5315 liveth H2416 , my lord H113 the king H4428 D-NMS , none can turn H518 PART to the right H3231 hand or to the left H8041 from aught H3605 NMS that H834 RPRO my lord H113 the king H4428 D-NMS hath spoken H1696 VPQ3MS : for H3588 CONJ thy servant H5650 Joab H3097 , he H1931 PPRO-3MS bade H6680 me , and he H1931 W-PPRO-3MS put H7760 VQQ3MS all H3605 NMS these H428 words H1697 AMP in the mouth H6310 B-CMS of thine handmaid H8198 :
20 To H5668 fetch about H5437 this form H6440 CMP of speech H1697 D-NMS hath thy servant H5650 Joab H3097 done H6213 VQQ3MS this H2088 D-PMS thing H1697 D-NMS : and my lord H113 is wise H2450 AMS , according to the wisdom H2451 of an angel H4397 of God H430 D-EDP , to know H3045 L-VQFC all H3605 NMS things that H834 RPRO are in the earth H776 B-GFS .
21 And the king H4428 D-NMS said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP Joab H3097 , Behold H2009 IJEC now H4994 IJEC , I have done H6213 VQQ1MS this H2088 D-PMS thing H1697 D-NMS : go H1980 therefore , bring H7725 VHFA the young man H5288 Absalom H53 again .
22 And Joab H3097 fell H5307 W-VQY3MS to the ground H776 NFS-3FS on H413 PREP his face H6440 CMP-3MS , and bowed himself H7812 , and thanked H1288 W-VNY3MS the king H4428 D-NMS : and Joab H3097 said H559 W-VQY3MS , Today H3117 D-AMS thy servant H5650 knoweth H3045 VQQ3MS that H3588 CONJ I have found H4672 VQQ1MS grace H2580 NMS in thy sight H5869 , my lord H113 , O king H4428 D-NMS , in that H834 RPRO the king H4428 D-NMS hath fulfilled H6213 VQQ3MS the request H1697 CMS of his servant H5650 .
23 So Joab H3097 arose H6965 W-VQY3MS and went H1980 W-VQY3MS to Geshur H1650 , and brought H935 W-VHY3MS Absalom H53 to Jerusalem H3389 .
24 And the king H4428 D-NMS said H559 W-VQY3MS , Let him turn H5437 to H413 PREP his own house H1004 NMS-3MS , and let him not H3808 NADV see H7200 VQY3MS my face H6440 . So Absalom H53 returned H5437 to H413 PREP his own house H1004 NMS-3MS , and saw H7200 not H3808 NADV the king H4428 D-NMS \'s face H6440 W-CMP .
25 But in all H3605 B-CMS Israel H3478 there was H1961 VQQ3MS none H3808 NADV to be so much H3966 ADV praised H1984 as Absalom H53 for his beauty H3303 : from the sole H3709 M-CFS of his foot H7272 CFS-3MS even to H5704 W-PREP the crown of his head H6936 there was H1961 VQQ3MS no H3808 NADV blemish H3971 in him .
26 And when he polled H1548 his head H7218 CMS-3MS , (for it was H1961 W-VQQ3MS at every year\'s end H7093 M-CMS that H834 RPRO he polled H1548 it : because H3588 CONJ the hair was heavy H3513 on H5921 PREP-3MS him , therefore he polled H1548 it : ) he weighed H8254 the hair H8181 of his head H7218 CMS-3MS at two hundred H3967 MFD shekels H8255 after the king H4428 \'s weight H68 .
27 And unto Absalom H53 there were born H3205 three H7969 sons H1121 NMP , and one H259 OFS daughter H1323 , whose name H8034 was Tamar H8559 : she H1931 PPRO-3FS was H1961 VQQ3FS a woman H802 NFS of a fair H3303 CFS countenance H4758 .
28 So Absalom H53 dwelt H3427 W-VQY3MS two full years H8141 NFD in Jerusalem H3389 , and saw H7200 not H3808 NADV the king H4428 D-NMS \'s face H6440 W-CMP .
29 Therefore Absalom H53 sent H7971 W-VQY3MS for H413 PREP Joab H3097 , to have sent H7971 him to H413 PREP the king H4428 D-NMS ; but he would H14 not H3808 W-NPAR come H935 L-VQFC to H413 PREP-3MS him : and when he sent H7971 W-VQY3MS again H5750 ADV the second time H8145 CFS , he would H14 not H3808 W-NPAR come H935 .
30 Therefore he said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP his servants H5650 , See H7200 , Joab H3097 \'s field H2513 is near H413 PREP mine H3027 CFS-1MS , and he hath barley H8184 there H8033 ADV ; go H1980 VQI2MP and set H3341 it on fire H784 . And Absalom H53 \'s servants H5650 set H3341 the field H2513 on fire H784 .
31 Then Joab H3097 arose H6965 W-VQY3MS , and came H935 W-VQY3MS to H413 PREP Absalom H53 unto his house H1004 , and said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP-3MS him , Wherefore H4100 L-IPRO have thy servants H5650 set H3341 my field H2513 on fire H784 ?
32 And Absalom H53 answered H559 W-VQY3MS Joab H3097 , Behold H2009 IJEC , I sent H7971 unto H413 PREP thee , saying H559 W-VQY3MS , Come H935 hither H2008 ADV , that I may send H7971 thee to H413 PREP the king H4428 D-NMS , to say H559 W-VQY3MS , Wherefore H4100 L-IPRO am I H589 PPRO-1MS come H935 from Geshur H1650 ? it had been good H2896 AMS for me to have been there H8033 ADV still H5750 ADV : now H6258 W-ADV therefore let me see H7200 VQY1MS the king H4428 D-NMS \'s face H6440 CMP ; and if H518 W-PART there be H3426 ADV any iniquity H5771 NMS in me , let him kill H4191 me .
33 So Joab H3097 came H935 W-VQY3MS to H413 PREP the king H4428 D-NMS , and told H5046 him : and when he had called H7121 W-VQY3MS for H413 PREP Absalom H53 , he came H935 W-VQY3MS to H413 PREP the king H4428 D-NMS , and bowed H7812 himself on H5921 PREP his face H639 to the ground H776 NFS-3FS before H6440 L-CMP the king H4428 D-NMS : and the king H4428 D-NMS kissed H5401 Absalom H53 .
