Judges 16:1 (NIRV) New International Reader's Version

1 One day Samson went to Gaza. There he saw a prostitute. He went in to spend the night with her.
2 The people of Gaza were told, "Samson is here!" So they surrounded the place. They hid and waited for him at the city gate all night long. They didn't make any move against him during the night. They said, "Let's wait until the sun comes up. Then we'll kill him."
3 But Samson stayed there only until the middle of the night. Then he got up. He took hold of the doors of the city gate. He also took hold of the two doorposts. He tore them loose, together with their metal bar. He picked them up and put them on his shoulders. Then he carried them to the top of the hill that faces Hebron.
4 Some time later, Samson fell in love again. The woman lived in the Valley of Sorek. Her name was Delilah.
5 The rulers of the Philistines went to her. They said, "See if you can get him to tell you the secret of why he's so strong. Find out how we can overpower him. Then we can tie him up. We can bring him under our control. Each of us will give you 28 pounds of silver."
6 So Delilah spoke to Samson. She said, "Tell me the secret of why you are so strong. Tell me how you can be tied up and controlled."
7 Samson answered her, "Let someone tie me up with seven new leather straps. They must be straps that aren't completely dry. Then I'll become as weak as any other man."
8 So the Philistine rulers brought seven new leather straps to her. They weren't completely dry. Delilah tied Samson up with them.
9 Men were hiding in the room. She called out to him. She said, "Samson! The Philistines are attacking you!" But he snapped the leather straps easily. They were like pieces of string that had come too close to a flame. So the secret of why he was so strong wasn't discovered.
10 Delilah spoke to Samson again. "You have made me look foolish," she said. "You told me a lie. Come on. Tell me how you can be tied up."
11 Samson said, "Let someone tie me tightly with new ropes. They must be ropes that have never been used. Then I'll become as weak as any other man."
12 So Delilah got some new ropes. She tied him up with them. Men were hiding in the room. She called out to him. She said, "Samson! The Philistines are attacking you!" But he snapped the ropes off his arms. They fell off just as if they were threads.
13 Delilah spoke to Samson again. "Until now, you have been making me look foolish," she said. "You have been telling me lies. This time really tell me how you can be tied up." He replied, "Weave the seven braids of my hair into the cloth on a loom. Then pin my hair to the loom. If you do, I'll become as weak as any other man." So while Samson was sleeping, Delilah took hold of the seven braids of his hair. She wove them into the cloth on a loom.
14 Then she pinned his hair to the loom. Again she called out to him. She said, "Samson! The Philistines are attacking you!" He woke up from his sleep. He pulled up the pin and the loom, together with the cloth.
15 Then she said to him, "How can you say, 'I love you'? You won't even share your secret with me. This is the third time you have made me look foolish. And you still haven't told me the secret of why you are so strong."
16 She continued to pester him day after day. She nagged him until he was sick and tired of it.
17 So he told her everything. "I've never used a razor on my head," he said. "I've never cut my hair. That's because I've been a Nazirite since the day I was born. A Nazirite is set apart to God. If you shave my head, I won't be strong anymore. I'll become as weak as any other man."
18 Delilah realized he had told her everything. So she sent a message to the Philistine rulers. She said, "Come back one more time. He has told me everything." So the rulers returned. They brought the silver with them.
19 Delilah got Samson to go to sleep on her lap. Then she called for a man to shave off the seven braids of his hair. That's how she began to bring him under her control. And he wasn't strong anymore.
20 She called out, "Samson! The Philistines are attacking you!" He woke up from his sleep. He thought, "I'll go out just as I did before. I'll shake myself free." But he didn't know that the Lord had left him.
21 Then the Philistines grabbed hold of him. They poked his eyes out. They took him down to Gaza. They put bronze chains around him. Then they made him grind grain in the prison.
22 His head had been shaved. But the hair on it began to grow again.
23 The rulers of the Philistines gathered together. They were going to offer a great sacrifice to their god Dagon. They were going to celebrate. They said, "Our god has handed our enemy Samson over to us."
24 When the people saw Samson, they praised their god. They said, "Our god has handed our enemy over to us. Our enemy has destroyed our land. He has killed large numbers of our people."
25 After they had drunk a lot of wine, they shouted, "Bring Samson out. Let him put on a show for us." So they called Samson out of the prison. He put on a show for them. They had him stand near the temple pillars.
26 Then he spoke to the servant who was holding his hand. He said, "Put me where I can feel the pillars. I'm talking about the ones that hold the temple up. I want to lean against them."
27 The temple was crowded with men and women. All of the Philistine rulers were there. About 3,000 men and women were on the roof. They were watching Samson put on a show.
28 Then he prayed to the Lord. He said, "Lord and King, show me that you still have concern for me. God, please make me strong just one more time. Let me pay the Philistines back for what they did to my two eyes. Let me do it with only one blow."
29 Then Samson reached toward the two pillars that were in the middle of the temple. They held the temple up. He put his right hand on one of them. He put his left hand on the other. He leaned hard against them.
30 Samson said, "Let me die together with the Philistines!" Then he pushed with all his might. The temple came down on the rulers. It fell on all of the people who were in it. So Samson killed many more Philistines when he died than he did while he lived.
31 Then his brothers went down to get him. So did his father's whole family. All of them brought Samson's body back home. They buried his body in the tomb of his father Manoah. It's between Zorah and Eshtaol. Samson had led Israel for 20 years.

3 And Samson H8123 lay H7901 W-VQY3MS till H5704 PREP midnight H2677 , and arose H6965 W-VQY3MS at midnight H2677 , and took H270 the doors H1817 of the gate H8179 of the city H5892 D-GFS , and the two H8147 posts H4201 , and went away H5265 with them , bar and all H5973 , and put H7760 W-VQY3MS them upon H5921 PREP his shoulders H3802 , and carried them up H5927 to H413 PREP the top H7218 NMS of a hill H2022 that H834 RPRO is before H5921 PREP Hebron H2275 .
4 And it came to pass H1961 W-VPY3MS afterward H310 PREP , that he loved H157 a woman H802 NFS in the valley H5158 of Sorek H7796 , whose name H8034 was Delilah H1807 .
5 And the lords H5633 of the Philistines H6430 came up H5927 unto H413 PREP-3FS her , and said H559 W-VQY3MP unto her , Entice H6601 him , and see H7200 wherein H4100 his great H1419 strength H3581 CMS-3MS lieth , and by what H4100 means we may prevail H3201 against him , that we may bind H631 him to afflict H6031 him : and we H587 will give H5414 thee every one H376 NMS of us eleven hundred H3967 pieces of silver H3701 NMS .
6 And Delilah H1807 said H559 W-VQY3FS to H413 PREP Samson H8123 , Tell H5046 me , I pray thee H4994 IJEC , wherein H4100 thy great H1419 strength H3581 lieth , and wherewith H4100 thou mightest be bound H631 to afflict H6031 thee .
7 And Samson H8123 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP-3FS her , If H518 PART they bind H631 me with seven H7651 B-MMS green H3892 withes H3499 that H834 RPRO were never H3808 NADV dried H2717 , then shall I be weak H2470 , and be H1961 as another H259 K-NMS man H120 D-NMS .
8 Then the lords H5633 of the Philistines H6430 brought up H5927 to her seven H7651 NUM-MS green H3892 withes H3499 which H834 RPRO had not H3808 NADV been dried H2717 , and she bound H631 him with them .
9 Now there were men lying in wait H693 , abiding H3427 VQPMS with her in the chamber H2315 . And she said H559 W-VQY3FS unto H413 PREP-3MS him , The Philistines H6430 TMS be upon H5921 PREP-2MS thee , Samson H8123 . And he broke H5423 the withes H3499 , as H834 K-RPRO a thread H6616 of tow H5296 is broken H5423 VNY3MS when it toucheth H7306 the fire H784 CMS . So his strength H3581 was not H3808 W-NPAR known H3045 .
10 And Delilah H1807 said H559 W-VQY3FS unto H413 PREP Samson H8123 , Behold H2009 IJEC , thou hast mocked H2048 me , and told H1696 me lies H3577 : now H6258 ADV tell H5046 me , I pray thee H4994 IJEC , wherewith H4100 thou mightest be bound H631 .
11 And he said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP-3FS her , If H518 PART they bind me fast H631 with new H2319 AMP ropes H5688 that H834 RPRO never H3808 ADV were occupied H6213 , then shall I be weak H2470 , and be H1961 as another H259 K-NMS man H120 D-NMS .
12 Delilah H1807 therefore took H3947 W-VQY3FS new H2319 AMP ropes H5688 , and bound H631 him therewith , and said H559 W-VQY3FS unto H413 PREP-3MS him , The Philistines H6430 TMS be upon H5921 M-PREP thee , Samson H8123 . And there were liers in wait H693 abiding H3427 VQPMS in the chamber H2315 . And he broke H5423 them from off H5921 M-PREP his arms H2220 like a thread H2339 .
13 And Delilah H1807 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP Samson H8123 , Hitherto H5704 PREP thou hast mocked H2048 me , and told H1696 me lies H3576 : tell H5046 D-VHI2MS-3FS me wherewith H4100 thou mightest be bound H631 . And he said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP her , If H518 PART thou weavest H707 the seven H7651 MFS locks H4253 of my head H7218 CMS-1MS with H5973 PREP the web H4545 .
14 And she fastened H8628 it with the pin H3489 , and said H559 W-VQY3FS unto H413 PREP-3MS him , The Philistines H6430 TMS be upon H5921 PREP-2MS thee , Samson H8123 . And he awaked H3364 out of his sleep H8142 , and went away H5265 W-VQY3MS with the pin H3489 of the beam H708 , and with the web H4545 .
15 And she said H559 W-VQY3FS unto H413 PREP-3MS him , How H349 canst thou say H559 , I love H157 thee , when thine heart H3820 is not H369 NPAR with H854 PREP-1MS me ? thou hast mocked H2048 me these three H7969 MFS times H6471 NFP , and hast not H3808 W-NPAR told H5046 VHQ2MS me wherein H4100 thy great H1419 strength H3581 lieth .
16 And it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS , when H3588 CONJ she pressed H6693 him daily H3117 D-NMP with her words H1697 , and urged H509 him , so that his soul H5315 NMS-3MS was vexed H7114 unto death H4191 ;
17 That he told H5046 her all H3605 NMS his heart H3820 CMS-3MS , and said H559 W-VQY3MS unto her , There hath not H3808 ADV come H5927 a razor H4177 upon H5921 PREP mine head H7218 CMS-1MS ; for H3588 CONJ I H589 PPRO-1MS have been a Nazarite H5139 unto God H430 EDP from my mother H517 CFS-1MS \'s womb H990 M-CFS : if H518 PART I be shaven H1548 , then my strength H3581 will go H5493 W-VQPMS from H4480 M-PREP-1MS me , and I shall become weak H2470 , and be H1961 like any H3605 NMS other man H120 D-NMS .
18 And when Delilah H1807 saw H7200 W-VQQ3FS that H3588 CONJ he had told H5046 VHQ3MS her all H3605 NMS his heart H3820 CMS-3MS , she sent H7971 and called H7121 W-VQY2MS for the lords H5633 of the Philistines H6430 , saying H559 L-VQFC , Come up H5927 this once H6471 D-GFS , for H3588 CONJ he hath showed H5046 VHQ3MS me all H3605 NMS his heart H3820 CMS-3MS . Then the lords H5633 of the Philistines H6430 came up H5927 unto H413 PREP-3FS her , and brought H5927 money H3701 in their hand H3027 .
19 And she made him sleep H3462 upon H5921 PREP her knees H1290 ; and she called H7121 W-VQY2MS for a man H376 LD-NMS , and she caused him to shave off H1548 the seven H7651 MFS locks H4253 of his head H7218 CMS-3MS ; and she began H2490 to afflict H6031 him , and his strength H3581 CMS-3MS went H5493 W-VHY3MS from PREP him .
20 And she said H559 W-VQY3MS , The Philistines H6430 TMS be upon H5921 PREP-2MS thee , Samson H8123 . And he awoke H3364 out of his sleep H8142 , and said H559 W-VQY3MS , I will go out H3318 VQY1MS as at other times before H6471 , and shake myself H5287 . And he H1931 W-PPRO-3MS knew H3045 VQQ3MS not H3808 NADV that H3588 CONJ the LORD H3068 EDS was departed H5493 from him .
21 But the Philistines H6430 took H270 him , and put out H5365 his eyes H5869 CMD-3MS , and brought him down H3381 to Gaza H5804 , and bound H631 him with fetters of brass H5178 ; and he did H1961 W-VQY3MS grind H2912 in the prison H615 house H1004 B-CMS .
22 Howbeit the hair H8181 of his head H7218 CMS-3MS began H2490 W-VHY3MS to grow again H6779 after H834 K-RPRO he was shaven H1548 .
23 Then the lords H5633 of the Philistines H6430 gathered them together H622 for to offer H2076 a great H1419 AMS sacrifice H2077 unto Dagon H1712 their god H430 , and to rejoice H8057 : for they said H559 W-VQY3MP , Our god H430 hath delivered H5414 VQQ3MS Samson H8123 our enemy H341 into our hand H3027 .
24 And when the people H5971 saw H7200 W-VQY3MP him , they praised H1984 their god H430 : for H3588 CONJ they said H559 VQQ3MP , Our god H430 hath delivered H5414 VQQ3MS into our hands H3027 our enemy H341 , and the destroyer H2717 of our country H776 , which H834 W-RPRO slew many H7235 of us .
25 And it came to pass H1961 W-VPY3MS , when H3588 their hearts H3820 CMS-3MP were merry H2896 , that they said H559 W-VQY3MP , Call H7121 for Samson H8123 , that he may make us sport H7832 . And they called H7121 W-VQY3MP for Samson H8123 out of the prison house H1004 ; and he made them sport H6711 : and they set H5975 him between H996 PREP the pillars H5982 .
26 And Samson H8123 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP the lad H5288 that held H2388 him by the hand H3027 B-CFS-3MS , Suffer H5117 me that I may feel H4184 the pillars H5982 whereupon H834 RPRO the house H1004 D-NMS standeth H3559 NMS , that I may lean H8172 upon H5921 PREP-3MP them .
27 Now the house H1004 was full H4390 VQQ3MS of men H376 NMS and women H802 ; and all H3605 NMS the lords H5633 of the Philistines H6430 were there H8033 ; and there were upon H5921 W-PREP the roof H1406 about three H7969 thousand H505 MMP men H376 NMS and women H802 , that beheld H7200 while Samson H8123 made sport H7832 .
28 And Samson H8123 called H7121 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP the LORD H3068 EDS , and said H559 W-VQY3MS , O Lord H136 EDS GOD H3069 , remember H2142 me , I pray thee H4994 IJEC , and strengthen H2388 me , I pray thee H4994 IJEC , only H389 ADV this H2088 D-PMS once H6471 D-GFS , O God H430 D-EDP , that I may be at once avenged H5358 of the Philistines H6430 for my two H8147 eyes H5869 CMD-1MS .
29 And Samson H8123 took hold H3943 of the two H8147 ONUM middle H8432 pillars H5982 CMP upon H5921 PREP-3MP which H834 RPRO the house H1004 D-NMS stood H3559 NMS , and on H5921 PREP-3MP which it was borne up H5564 , of the one H259 MMS with his right hand H3225 , and of the other H259 with his left H8040 .
30 And Samson H8123 said H559 W-VQY3MS , Let me H5315 CFS-1MS die H4191 with H5973 PREP the Philistines H6430 TMS . And he bowed H5186 W-VQY3MS himself with all his might H3581 B-NMS ; and the house H1004 D-NMS fell H5307 W-VQY3MS upon H5921 PREP the lords H5633 , and upon H5921 PREP all H3605 NMS the people H5971 that H834 RPRO were therein . So the dead H4191 which H834 RPRO he slew H4191 at his death H4194 were H1961 W-VQY3MP more H7227 AMP than they which H834 RPRO he slew H4191 in his life H2416 .
31 Then his brethren H251 NMP-3MS and all H3605 W-CMS the house H1004 CMS of his father H1 came down H3381 , and took H5375 W-VQY3MP him , and brought him up H5927 , and buried H6912 him between H996 PREP Zorah H6881 and Eshtaol H847 in the burial place H6913 of Manoah H4495 his father H1 CMS-3MS . And he H1931 W-PPRO-3MS judged H8199 Israel H3478 twenty H6242 years H8141 NFS .
