Deuteronomy 2:1 (NIRV) New International Reader's Version

1 We turned back and started out toward the desert. We went along the road that leads to the Red Sea. That's how the Lord had directed me. For a long time we made our way around the hill country of Seir.
2 Then the Lord spoke to me. He said,
3 "You have made your way around this hill country long enough. So now turn north.
4 "Here are the orders I want you to give the people. Tell them, 'You are about to pass through the territory of your relatives. They are from the family line of Esau. They live in Seir. They will be afraid of you. But be very careful.
5 Do not make them angry. If you do, they will go to war against you. I will not give you any of their land. You will not have even enough to put your foot on. I have given Esau the hill country of Seir as his own.
6 Pay them with silver for the food you eat and the water you drink.' "
7 The Lord your God has blessed you in everything your hands have done. He watched over you when you traveled through that huge desert. For these 40 years the Lord your God has been with you. So you have had everything you need.
8 We went on past our relatives. They are from the family line of Esau. They live in Seir. We turned away from the Arabah Valley road. It comes up from Elath and Ezion Geber. We traveled along the desert road of Moab.
9 Then the Lord said to me, "Do not attack the Moabites. Do not even make them angry. If you do, they will go to war against you. I will not give you any part of their land. I have given Moab to the people in the family line of Lot. I have given it to them as their own."
10 The Emites used to live there. They were strong people. There were large numbers of them. They were as tall as the Anakites.
11 Like the Anakites, they too were thought of as Rephaites. But the Moabites called them Emites.
12 The Horites used to live in Seir. But the people of Esau drove them out. They destroyed the Horites to make room for themselves. Then they settled in their territory. They did just as Israel has done in the land the Lord gave them as their own.
13 The Lord said, "Now get up. Go across the Zered Valley." So we went across it.
14 Between the time we left Kadesh Barnea and the time we went across the Zered Valley, 38 years passed. By then, all of the fighting men who had been in our camp from the beginning had died. The Lord had warned them with an oath that it would happen.
15 He used his power against them until he had gotten rid of all of them. Not one was left in the camp.
16 Finally, the last of the fighting men among the people died.
17 Then the Lord spoke to me. He said,
18 "Today you must pass near the border of Moab. Moab is also called Ar.
19 "When you come to the Ammonites, do not attack them. Do not make them angry. If you do, they will go to war against you. I will not give you any of their land as your own. I have given it to the people in the family line of Lot. I have given it to them as their own."
20 That land was also thought of as a land of the Rephaites. They used to live there. But the Ammonites called them Zamzummites.
21 The Rephaites were strong people. There were large numbers of them. They were as tall as the Anakites. The Lord destroyed the Rephaites to make room for the Ammonites. So the Ammonites drove them out. Then they settled in the territory of the Rephaites.
22 The Lord had done the same thing for the people of Esau. They lived in Seir. He destroyed the Horites to make room for them. They drove the Horites out. So the people of Esau have lived in Seir in the territory of the Horites to this very day.
23 The Avvites lived in villages as far away as Gaza. But people came from Crete. They destroyed the Avvites. Then they settled in the territory of the Avvites.
24 The Lord said, "Start out and go across the valley of the Arnon River. I have handed Sihon over to you. He is the Amorite king of Heshbon. I have also given you his country. Begin to take it as your own. Go to war against him.
25 "This very day I will bring fear and terror on all of the nations because of you. They will hear about you. They will tremble with fear. Pain and suffering will take hold of them because of you."
26 I sent messengers from the Desert of Kedemoth. I told them to go to Sihon, the king of Heshbon. They offered him peace. They said,
27 "Let us pass through your country. We'll stay on the main road. We won't turn off it to one side or the other.
28 We'll pay you the right amount of silver for food to eat and water to drink. Just let us walk through your country.
29 The people of Esau, who live in Seir, allowed us to do that. The people of Moab, who live in Ar, also allowed us to do it. So let us walk through until we go across the Jordan River. Then we'll be able to go into the land the Lord our God is giving us."
30 But Sihon, the king of Heshbon, refused to let us walk through. The Lord your God had made his heart and spirit stubborn. The Lord wanted to hand him over to you. And that's exactly what he has done.
31 The Lord said to me, "I have begun to hand Sihon and his country over to you. So begin the battle to take his land as your own."
32 Sihon and his whole army came out to fight against us at Jahaz.
33 But the Lord our God handed him over to us. We struck him down together with his sons and his whole army.
34 At that time we took all of his towns. We completely destroyed them. We killed all of the men, women and children. We didn't leave any of them alive.
35 But we took for ourselves the livestock and everything else from the towns we had captured.
36 Not a single town was too strong for us. That includes all of the towns from Aroer on the rim of the Arnon River valley all the way to Gilead. It also includes the town in the valley. The Lord our God gave us all of them.
37 And you obeyed the Lord's command. You didn't go near any part of the land of the Ammonites. That includes the land along the Jabbok River. It also includes the land around the towns that are in the hills.
1 Then we turned H6437 , and took our journey H5265 into the wilderness H4057 by the way H1870 NMS of the Red H5488 NMS sea H3220 , as H834 K-RPRO the LORD H3068 EDS spoke H1696 VPQ3MS unto H413 me : and we compassed H5437 mount H2022 CMS Seir H8165 LFS many H7227 AMP days H3117 NMP .
2 And the LORD H3068 EDS spoke H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP-1MS me , saying H559 W-VQY3MS ,
3 Ye have compassed H5437 this H2088 D-PMS mountain H2022 long enough H7227 AMS : turn H6437 VQI2MP you northward H6828 .
4 And command H6680 thou the people H5971 , saying H559 L-VQFC , Ye H859 PPRO-2MS are to pass through H5674 the coast H1366 of your brethren H251 the children H1121 of Esau H6215 , which dwell H3427 in Seir H8165 ; and they shall be afraid H3372 of H4480 M-PPRO-2MS you : take ye good heed unto yourselves therefore H8104 :
5 Meddle H1624 not H408 NPAR with them ; for H3588 CONJ I will not H3808 ADV give H5414 VQY1MS you of their land H776 , no , not so much H5704 PREP as a foot breadth H4096 ; because H3588 CONJ I have given H5414 VQQ1MS mount H2022 CMS Seir H8165 unto Esau H6215 for a possession H3425 .
6 Ye shall buy H7666 meat H400 NMS of them for money H3701 BD-NMS , that ye may eat H398 ; and ye shall also H1571 W-CONJ buy H3739 water H4325 OMD of them for money H3701 BD-NMS , that ye may drink H8354 .
7 For H3588 CONJ the LORD H3068 EDS thy God H430 CMP-2MS hath blessed H1288 thee in all H3605 the works H4639 M-CMS of thy hand H3027 CFS-2MS : he knoweth H3045 VQQ3MS thy walking through H1980 this H2088 D-PMS great H1419 D-AMS wilderness H4057 D-NMS : these H2088 DPRO forty H705 MMP years H8141 NFS the LORD H3068 EDS thy God H430 CMP-2MS hath been with H5973 PREP-2FS thee ; thou hast lacked H2637 nothing H3808 NADV .
8 And when we passed by H5674 from our brethren H251 the children H1121 CMP of Esau H6215 , which dwelt H3427 in Seir H8165 , through the way H1870 NMS of the plain H6160 from Elath H359 , and from Ezion H6100 - gaber , we turned H6437 and passed H5674 by the way H1870 NMS of the wilderness H4057 of Moab H4124 .
9 And the LORD H3068 EDS said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP-1MS me , Distress H6696 not H408 W-NPAR the Moabites H4124 , neither H408 W-NPAR contend H1624 with them in battle H4421 NFS : for H3588 CONJ I will not H3808 ADV give H5414 VQY1MS thee of their land H776 for a possession H3425 ; because H3588 CONJ I have given H5414 VQQ1MS Ar H6144 unto the children H1121 L-CMP of Lot H3876 EMS for a possession H3425 .
10 The Emims H368 dwelt H3427 VQQ3MP therein in times past H6440 L-NMP , a people H5971 NMS great H1419 AMS , and many H7227 W-JMS , and tall H7311 , as the Anakims H6062 ;
11 Which H1992 PPRO-3MP also H637 CONJ were accounted H2803 giants H7497 TMP , as the Anakims H6062 ; but the Moabites H4125 call H7121 them Emims H368 .
12 The Horims H2752 also dwelt H3427 VQQ3MP in Seir H8165 formerly H6440 L-NMP ; but the children H1121 W-CMP of Esau H6215 succeeded H3423 them , when they had destroyed H8045 them from before H6440 M-CMP-3MP them , and dwelt H3427 W-VQY3MP in their stead H8478 ; as H834 RPRO Israel H3478 did H6213 VQQ3MS unto the land H776 of his possession H3425 , which H834 RPRO the LORD H3068 EDS gave H5414 VQQ3MS unto them .
13 Now H6258 ADV rise up H6965 , said I , and get you over H5674 the brook H5158 NMS Zered H2218 . And we went over H5674 the brook H5158 NMS Zered H2218 .
14 And the space H3117 in which H834 RPRO we came H1980 from Kadesh H6947 - barnea , until H5704 PREP we were come over H5674 the brook H5158 NMS Zered H2218 , was thirty H7970 MMP and eight H8083 W-MFS years H8141 NFS ; until H5704 PREP all H3605 NMS the generation H1755 of the men H376 CMP of war H4421 were wasted H8552 out from among H7130 the host H4264 , as H834 RPRO the LORD H3068 EDS swore H7650 unto them .
15 For indeed H1571 W-CONJ the hand H3027 CFS of the LORD H3068 EDS was H1961 VQQ3FS against them , to destroy H2000 them from among H7130 the host H4264 , until H5704 PREP they were consumed H8552 .
16 So it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS , when H834 all H3605 NMS the men H376 of war H4421 were consumed H8552 VQQ3MP and dead H4191 L-VQFC from among H7130 the people H5971 D-NMS ,
17 That the LORD H3068 EDS spoke H1696 W-VPY3MS unto H413 PREP-1MS me , saying H559 L-VQFC ,
18 Thou H859 PPRO-2MS art to pass over H5674 through Ar H6144 the coast H1366 CMS of Moab H4124 , this day H3117 D-AMS :
19 And when thou comest nigh H7126 over against H4136 the children H1121 L-CMP of Ammon H5983 , distress H6696 them not H408 NPAR , nor H408 ADV meddle H1624 with them : for H3588 CONJ I will not H3808 ADV give H5414 VQY1MS thee of the land H776 M-NFS of the children H1121 L-CMP of Ammon H5983 any possession H3425 ; because H3588 CONJ I have given H5414 it unto the children H1121 L-CMP of Lot H3876 EMS for a possession H3425 .
20 ( That H1931 also H637 CONJ was accounted H2803 a land H776 of giants H7497 TMP : giants H7497 TMP dwelt H3427 therein in old time H6440 L-NMP ; and the Ammonites H5984 call H7121 them Zamzummims H2157 ;
21 A people H5971 NMS great H1419 AMS , and many H7227 W-JMS , and tall H7311 , as the Anakims H6062 ; but the LORD H3068 EDS destroyed H8045 them before H6440 M-CMP-3MP them ; and they succeeded H3423 them , and dwelt H3427 W-VQY3MP in their stead H8478 :
22 As H834 RPRO he did H6213 VQQ3MS to the children H1121 L-CMP of Esau H6215 , which dwelt H3427 in Seir H8165 , when H834 RPRO he destroyed H8045 the Horims H2752 D-TFS from before H6440 M-CMP-3MP them ; and they succeeded H3423 them , and dwelt H3427 W-VQY3MP in their stead H8478 even unto H5704 PREP this H2088 D-PMS day H3117 D-AMS :
23 And the Avims H5757 which dwelt H3427 in Hazerim H2699 , even unto H5704 PREP Azzah H5804 LFS , the Caphtorims H3732 , which came forth H3318 out of Caphtor H3731 , destroyed H8045 them , and dwelt H3427 W-VQY3MP in their stead H8478 . )
24 Rise ye up H6965 , take your journey H5265 , and pass over H5674 the river H5158 NMS Arnon H769 : behold H7200 VQI2MS , I have given H5414 VQQ1MS into thine hand H3027 Sihon H5511 the Amorite H567 , king H4428 NMS of Heshbon H2809 , and his land H776 : begin H2490 to possess H3423 it , and contend H1624 with him in battle H4421 .
25 This H2088 D-PMS day H3117 D-AMS will I begin H2490 to put H5414 VQFC the dread H6343 of thee and the fear H3374 of thee upon H5921 PREP the nations H5971 that are under H8478 NMS the whole H3605 NMS heaven H8064 D-AMP , who H834 RPRO shall hear H8085 report H8088 of thee , and shall tremble H7264 , and be in anguish H2342 because H6440 CMP of thee .
26 And I sent H7971 messengers H4397 out of the wilderness H4057 of Kedemoth H6932 unto H413 PREP Sihon H5511 king H4428 NMS of Heshbon H2809 with words H1697 CMP of peace H7965 NMS , saying H559 L-VQFC ,
27 Let me pass H5674 through thy land H776 : I will go H1980 VQY1MS along by the highway H1870 , I will neither H3808 NADV turn H5493 unto the right hand H3225 NFS nor to the left H8040 .
28 Thou shalt sell H7666 me meat H400 NMS for money H3701 BD-NMS , that I may eat H398 ; and give H5414 VQY2MS me water H4325 W-NMD for money H3701 BD-NMS , that I may drink H8354 : only H7535 ADV I will pass through H5674 on my feet H7272 ;
29 ( RPRO As RPRO the children H1121 of Esau H6215 which dwell H3427 in Seir H8165 , and the Moabites H4125 which dwell H3427 in Ar H6144 , did H6213 unto me ; ) until H5704 PREP I shall pass over H5674 Jordan H3383 D-EFS into H413 PREP the land H776 D-GFS which H834 RPRO the LORD H3068 EDS our God H430 giveth H5414 VQPMS us .
30 But Sihon H5511 king H4428 NMS of Heshbon H2809 would H14 not H3808 W-NPAR let us pass H5674 by him : for H3588 CONJ the LORD H3068 EDS thy God H430 CMP-2MS hardened H7185 VHQ3MS his spirit H7307 CMS-3MS , and made his heart obstinate H553 , that H4616 L-CONJ he might deliver H5414 him into thy hand H3027 , as appeareth this H2088 D-PMS day H3117 .
31 And the LORD H3068 EDS said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP-1MS me , Behold H7200 VQI2MS , I have begun H2490 to give H5414 VQFC Sihon H5511 and his land H776 before H6440 L-CMP-2MS thee : begin H2490 to possess H3423 , that thou mayest inherit H3423 his land H776 .
32 Then Sihon H5511 came out H3318 W-VQY3MS against H7125 us , he H1931 PPRO-3MS and all H3605 W-CMS his people H5971 , to fight H4421 at Jahaz H3096 .
33 And the LORD H3068 EDS our God H430 delivered H5414 him before H6440 us ; and we smote H5221 him , and his sons H1121 , and all H3605 NMS his people H5971 .
34 And we took H3920 all H3605 NMS his cities H5892 at that H1931 D-PPRO-3FS time H6256 , and utterly destroyed H2763 the men H4962 , and the women H802 , and the little ones H2945 , of every H3605 NMS city H5892 GFS , we left H7604 none H3808 NADV to remain H8300 :
35 Only H7535 ADV the cattle H929 D-NFS we took for a prey H962 unto ourselves , and the spoil H7998 of the cities H5892 which H834 RPRO we took H3920 .
36 From H4480 M-PREP-3MS Aroer H6177 , which H834 RPRO is by H5921 PREP the brink H8193 CFS of the river H5158 NMS of Arnon H769 , and from the city H5892 that H834 RPRO is by the river H5158 , even unto H5704 W-PREP Gilead H1568 , there was H1961 VQP3FS not H3808 NADV one city H7151 NFS too strong H7682 for H4480 M-PREP-3MS us : the LORD H3068 EDS our God H430 delivered H5414 VQQ3MS all H3605 unto H6440 us :
37 Only H7535 ADV unto H413 PREP the land H776 GFS of the children H1121 of Ammon H5983 thou camest H7126 not H3808 NADV , nor unto any H3605 NMS place H3027 CFS of the river H5158 NMS Jabbok H2999 , nor unto the cities H5892 in the mountains H2022 , nor unto whatsoever H3605 NMS the LORD H3068 EDS our God H430 forbade H6680 VPQ3MS us .
