2 Samuel 12:1 (NIRV) New International Reader's Version

1 The Lord sent the prophet Nathan to David. When Nathan came to him, he said, "Two men lived in the same town. One was rich. The other was poor.
2 The rich man had a very large number of sheep and cattle.
3 But all the poor man had was one little female lamb. He had bought it. He raised it. It grew up with him and his children. It shared his food. It drank from his cup. It even slept in his arms. It was just like a daughter to him.
4 "One day a traveler came to the rich man. The rich man wanted to prepare a meal for him. But he didn't want to kill one of his own sheep or cattle. Instead, he took the little female lamb that belonged to the poor man. Then he cooked it for the traveler who had come to him."
5 David burned with anger against the rich man. He said to Nathan, "The man who did that is worthy of death. And that's just as sure as the Lord is alive.
6 The man must pay back four times as much as that lamb was worth. How could he do such a thing? And he wasn't even sorry he had done it."
7 Then Nathan said to David, "You are the man! The Lord, the God of Israel, says, 'I anointed you king over Israel. I saved you from Saul's powerful hand.
8 I gave you everything that belonged to your master Saul. I even put his wives into your arms. I made you king over the people of Israel and Judah. And if all of that had not been enough for you, I would have given you even more.
9 " 'Why did you turn your back on what I told you to do? You did what is evil in my sight. You made sure that Uriah, the Hittite, would be killed in battle. You took his wife to be your own. You let the men of Ammon kill him with their swords.
10 " 'So time after time members of your own royal house will be killed with swords. That's because you turned your back on me. You took the wife of Uriah, the Hittite, to be your own.'
11 "The Lord also says, 'I am going to bring trouble on you. It will come from your own family. I will take your wives away. Your own eyes will see it. I will give your wives to a man who is close to you. He will have sex with them in the middle of the day.
12 You committed your sins in secret. But I will make sure that the sin the man commits with your wives will take place in the middle of the day. Everyone in Israel will see it.' "
13 Then David said to Nathan, "I have sinned against the Lord." Nathan replied, "The Lord has taken away your sin. You aren't going to die.
14 But you have dared to make fun of the Lord. So the son who has been born to you will die."
15 Nathan went home. Then the Lord made the child that had been born to Uriah's wife by David very sick.
16 David begged God to heal the child. David didn't eat anything. He spent his nights lying on the ground.
17 His most trusted servants stood beside him. They wanted him to get up from the ground. But he refused to do it. And he wouldn't eat any food with them.
18 On the seventh day the child died. David's servants were afraid to tell him the child was dead. They thought, "While the child was still alive, we spoke to David. But he wouldn't listen to us. So how can we tell him the child is dead? He might do something terrible to himself."
19 David saw that his servants were whispering to each other. Then he realized the child was dead. "Has the child died?" he asked. "Yes," they replied. "He's dead."
20 Then David got up from the ground. After he washed himself, he put on lotions. He changed his clothes. He went into the house of the Lord and worshiped him. Then he went to his own house. He asked for some food. They served it to him. And he ate it.
21 His servants asked him, "Why are you acting like this? While the child was still alive, you wouldn't eat anything. You cried a lot. But now that the child is dead, you get up and eat!"
22 He answered, "While the child was still alive, I didn't eat anything. And I cried a lot. I thought, 'Who knows? The Lord might show favor to me. He might let the child live.'
23 But now he's dead. So why should I go without eating? Can I bring him back to life again? Someday I'll go to him. But he won't return to me."
24 Then David comforted his wife Bathsheba. He went to her and made love to her. Some time later she had a son. He was given the name Solomon. The Lord loved him.
25 So the Lord sent a message through the prophet Nathan. It said, "Name the boy Jedidiah."
26 During that time, Joab fought against Rabbah. It was the royal city of the Ammonites. It had high walls around it. Joab was about to capture it.
27 He sent messengers to David. He told them to say, "I have fought against Rabbah. I've taken control of its water supply.
28 So bring the rest of the troops together. Surround the city and get ready to attack it. Then capture it. If you don't, I'll capture it myself. Then it will be named after me."
29 So David brought the whole army together and went to Rabbah. He attacked it and captured it.
30 He took the gold crown off the head of the king of Ammon. The crown weighed 75 pounds. It had jewels in it. It was placed on David's head. He took a huge amount of goods from the city.
31 He brought out the people who were there. He made them work with saws and iron picks and axes. He forced them to make bricks. He did that to all of the towns in Ammon. Then he and his entire army returned to Jerusalem.
1 And the LORD H3068 EDS sent H7971 W-VQY3MS Nathan H5416 unto H413 PREP David H1732 MMS . And he came H935 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP-3MS him , and said H559 W-VQY3MS unto him , There were H1961 VQQ3MP two H8147 ONUM men H376 in one H259 MFS city H5892 ; the one H259 MMS rich H6223 AMS , and the other H259 poor H7326 .
2 The rich H6223 man had H1961 VQQ3MS exceeding H3966 ADV many H7235 VHFA flocks H6629 NMS and herds H1241 W-NMS :
3 But the poor H7326 man had nothing H369 ADV , save H518 PART one H259 OFS little H6996 ewe lamb H3535 , which H834 RPRO he had H1961 W-VQY3FS bought H7069 and nourished up H2421 : and it grew up H1431 together H3162 ADV-3MS with H5973 PREP-3MS him , and with H5973 his children H1121 CMP-3MS ; it did eat H398 VQY2MS of his own meat H6595 , and drank H8354 of his own cup H3563 , and lay H7901 in his bosom H2436 , and was H1961 W-VQY3FS unto him as a daughter H1323 .
4 And there came H935 W-VQY3MS a traveler H1982 unto the rich H6223 man H376 D-NMS , and he spared H2550 to take H3947 L-VQFC of his own flock H6629 and of his own herd H1241 , to dress H6213 L-VQFC for the wayfaring man H732 that was come H935 unto him ; but took H3947 W-VQY3MS the poor H7326 man H376 D-NMS \'s lamb H3535 , and dressed H6213 it for the man H376 D-NMS that was come H935 to H413 him .
5 And David H1732 MMS \'s anger H639 CMS was greatly H3966 ADV kindled H2734 against the man H376 D-NMS ; and he said H559 W-VQY3MS to H413 PREP Nathan H5416 , As the LORD H3068 EDS liveth H2416 AMS , the man H376 D-NMS that hath done H6213 this H2063 thing shall surely die H1121 CMS :
6 And he shall restore H7999 VPY3MS the lamb H3535 fourfold H706 , because H6118 he did H6213 VQQ3MS this H2088 D-PMS thing H1697 D-NMS , and because H5921 W-PREP he had no H3808 ADV pity H2550 .
7 And Nathan H5416 said H559 W-VQY3MS to H413 PREP David H1732 MMS , Thou H859 PPRO-2MS art the man H376 D-NMS . Thus H3541 saith H559 W-VQY3MS the LORD H3068 EDS God H430 CDP of Israel H3478 , I H595 PPRO-1MS anointed H4886 thee king H4428 L-CMS over H5921 PREP Israel H3478 , and I H595 W-PPRO-1MS delivered H5337 thee out of the hand H3027 M-GFS of Saul H7586 ;
8 And I gave H5414 thee thy master H113 \'s house H1004 CMS , and thy master H113 \'s wives H802 GFP into thy bosom H2436 , and gave H5414 thee the house H1004 CMS of Israel H3478 and of Judah H3063 ; and if H518 W-PART that had been too little H4592 , I would moreover have given H3254 unto thee such H2007 and such H2007 things .
9 Wherefore H4069 IPRO hast thou despised H959 the commandment H1697 CMS of the LORD H3068 EDS , to do H6213 L-VQFC evil H7451 in his sight H5869 ? thou hast killed H5221 Uriah H223 the Hittite H2850 with the sword H2719 , and hast taken H3947 his wife H802 CFS-3MS to be thy wife H802 L-NFS , and hast slain H2026 him with the sword H2719 of the children H1121 of Ammon H5983 .
10 Now H6258 W-ADV therefore the sword H2719 GFS shall never H3808 NADV depart H5493 from thine house H1004 ; because H6118 thou hast despised H959 me , and hast taken H3947 W-VQY3FS the wife H802 CFS of Uriah H223 the Hittite H2850 to be H1961 thy wife H802 .
11 Thus H3541 saith H559 VQQ3MS the LORD H3068 EDS , Behold H2009 , I will raise up H6965 VHPMS evil H7451 AFS against H5921 PREP-2MS thee out of thine own house H1004 , and I will take H3947 thy wives H802 before thine eyes H5869 , and give H5414 them unto thy neighbor H7453 , and he shall lie H7901 with H5973 PREP thy wives H802 in the sight H5869 of this H2063 sun H8121 D-NMS .
12 For H3588 CONJ thou H859 PPRO-2MS didst H6213 VQQ2MS it secretly H5643 : but I H589 W-PPRO-1MS will do H6213 this H2088 D-PMS thing H1697 D-NMS before H5048 all H3605 NMS Israel H3478 , and before H5048 the sun H8121 .
13 And David H1732 MMS said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP Nathan H5416 , I have sinned H2398 VQQ1MS against the LORD H3068 L-EDS . And Nathan H5416 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP David H1732 MMS , The LORD H3068 EDS also H1571 CONJ hath put away H5674 thy sin H2403 ; thou shalt not H3808 NADV die H4191 .
14 Howbeit H657 , because H3588 CONJ by this H2088 D-PMS deed H1697 thou hast given great occasion H5006 to the enemies H341 of the LORD H3068 EDS to blaspheme H5006 , the child H1121 also H1571 CONJ that is born H3209 unto thee shall surely die H4191 VQFA .
15 And Nathan H5416 departed H1980 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP his house H1004 NMS-3MS . And the LORD H3068 EDS struck H5062 the child H3206 that H834 RPRO Uriah H223 \'s wife H802 CFS bore H3205 unto David H1732 L-NAME , and it was very sick H605 .
16 David H1732 MMS therefore besought H1245 God H430 D-EDP for H1157 PREP the child H5288 ; and David H1732 MMS fasted H6684 , and went H935 in , and lay H7901 all H3605 night H3885 upon the earth H776 NFS-3FS .
17 And the elders H2205 of his house H1004 CMS-3MS arose H6965 , and went to H5921 PREP-3MS him , to raise him up H6965 from H4480 PREP the earth H776 D-GFS : but he would H14 not H3808 W-NPAR , neither H3808 W-NPAR did he eat H1262 bread H3899 NMS with H854 PREP-3MP them .
18 And it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS on the seventh H7637 D-ONUM day H3117 B-AMS , that the child H3206 died H4191 W-VQY3MS . And the servants H5650 of David H1732 feared H3372 to tell H5046 L-VHFC him that H3588 CONJ the child H3206 was dead H4191 : for H3588 CONJ they said H559 , Behold H2009 IJEC , while the child H3206 was H1961 yet alive H2416 AMS , we spoke H1696 unto H413 PREP-3MS him , and he would not H3808 W-NPAR hearken H8085 unto our voice H6963 : how H349 W-IJEC will he then vex H6213 W-VQQ3MS himself , if we tell H559 him that the child H3206 is dead H4191 ?
19 But when David H1732 MMS saw H7200 W-VIY3MS that H3588 CONJ his servants H5650 whispered H3907 , David H1732 MMS perceived H995 that H3588 CONJ the child H3206 was dead H4191 : therefore David H1732 MMS said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP his servants H5650 , Is the child H3206 dead H4191 ? And they said H559 W-VQY3MS , He is dead H4191 .
20 Then David H1732 MMS arose H6965 W-VQY3MS from the earth H776 , and washed H7364 , and anointed H5480 himself , and changed H2498 his apparel H8071 , and came H935 W-VQY3MS into the house H1004 CMS of the LORD H3068 EDS , and worshiped H7812 : then he came H935 W-VQY3MS to H413 PREP his own house H1004 NMS-3MS ; and when he required H7592 W-VQY3MS , they set H7760 W-VQY3MP bread H3899 NMS before him , and he did eat H398 W-VQY3MS .
21 Then said H559 W-VQY3MP his servants H5650 unto H413 PREP-3MS him , What H4100 IGAT thing H1697 D-NMS is this H2088 D-PMS that H834 RPRO thou hast done H6213 ? thou didst fast H6684 and weep H1058 for the child H3206 , while H5668 B-NMS it was alive H2416 AMS ; but when H834 RPRO the child H3206 was dead H4191 , thou didst rise H6965 and eat H398 W-VQY3FS bread H3899 NMS .
22 And he said H559 W-VQY3MS , While the child H3206 was yet H5750 B-ADV alive H2416 AMS , I fasted H6684 and wept H1058 : for H3588 CONJ I said H559 W-VQY3MS , Who H4310 IPRO can tell H3045 VQPMS whether GOD H3068 EDS will be gracious H2603 to me , that the child H3206 may live H2416 ?
23 But now H6258 W-ADV he is dead H4191 , wherefore H4100 L-IPRO should I H589 PPRO-1MS fast H6684 ? can H3201 I bring him back H7725 again H5750 ADV ? I H589 PPRO-1MS shall go H1980 to H413 PREP-3MS him , but he H1931 W-PPRO-3MS shall not H3808 ADV return H7725 VQY3MS to H413 me .
24 And David H1732 MMS comforted H5162 Bath H1339 - sheba his wife H802 CFS-3MS , and went H935 W-VQY3MS in unto H413 PREP-3FS her , and lay H7901 W-VQY3MS with H5973 PREP-3FS her : and she bore H3205 W-VQY3FS a son H1121 NMS , and he called H7121 his name H8034 CMS-3MS Solomon H8010 MMS : and the LORD H3068 W-EDS loved H157 him .
25 And he sent H7971 W-VQY3MS by the hand H3027 B-CFS of Nathan H5416 the prophet H5030 ; and he called H7121 W-VQY3MS his name H8034 CMS-3MS Jedidiah H3041 , because H5668 B-NMS of the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS .
26 And Joab H3097 fought H3898 against Rabbah H7237 of the children H1121 of Ammon H5983 , and took H3920 the royal H4410 city H5892 GFS .
27 And Joab H3097 sent H7971 W-VQY3MS messengers H4397 to H413 PREP David H1732 MMS , and said H559 W-VQY3MS , I have fought H3898 against Rabbah H7237 , and H1571 CONJ have taken H3920 the city H5892 GFS of waters H4325 D-OMD .
28 Now H6258 W-ADV therefore gather H622 the rest H3499 of the people H5971 together , and encamp H2583 against H5921 PREP the city H5892 D-GFS , and take H3920 it : lest H6435 CONJ I H589 PPRO-1MS take H3920 the city H5892 D-GFS , and it be called H7121 after H5921 PREP my name H8034 .
29 And David H1732 MMS gathered H622 all H3605 NMS the people H5971 together , and went H1980 W-VQY3MS to Rabbah H7237 , and fought H3898 against it , and took H3920 it .
30 And he took H3947 W-VQY3MS their king H4428 \'s crown H5850 from off H5921 M-PREP his head H7218 CMS-3MS , the weight H4948 whereof was a talent H3603 CFS of gold H2091 NMS with the precious H3368 stones H68 W-GFS : and it was H1961 W-VQY3FS set on H5921 M-PREP David H1732 MMS \'s head H7218 NMS . And he brought forth H3318 VHQ3MS the spoil H7998 of the city H5892 D-GFS in great H3966 ADV abundance H7235 VHFA .
31 And he brought forth H3318 VHQ3MS the people H5971 that H834 RPRO were therein , and put H7760 W-VQY3MS them under saws H4050 , and under harrows H2757 of iron H1270 , and under axes H4037 of iron H1270 , and made them pass through H5674 the brickkiln H4404 : and thus H3651 did H6213 VQY3MS he unto all H3605 the cities H5892 of the children H1121 of Ammon H5983 . So David H1732 MMS and all H3605 W-CMS the people H5971 returned H7725 unto Jerusalem H3389 .
