1 Kings 19:1 (NIRV) New International Reader's Version

1 Ahab told Jezebel everything Elijah had done. He told her how Elijah had killed all of the prophets with his sword.
2 So Jezebel sent a message to Elijah. She said, "You can be sure that I will kill you, just as I killed the other prophets. I'll do it by this time tomorrow. If I don't, may the gods punish me greatly."
3 Elijah was afraid. So he ran for his life. He came to Beersheba in Judah. He left his servant there.
4 Then he traveled for one day into the desert. He came to a small tree. He sat down under it. He prayed that he would die. "Lord, I've had enough," he said. "Take my life. I'm no better than my people of long ago."
5 Then he lay down under the tree. And he fell asleep. Suddenly an angel touched him. The angel said, "Get up and eat."
6 Elijah looked around. Near his head he saw a flat cake of bread. It had been baked over hot coals. A jar of water was also there. So Elijah ate and drank. Then he lay down again.
7 The angel of the Lord came to him a second time. He touched him and said, "Get up and eat. Your journey will be long and hard."
8 So he got up. He ate and drank. The food gave him new strength. He traveled for 40 days and 40 nights. He kept going until he arrived at Horeb. It was the mountain of God.
9 There he went into a cave and spent the night. A message came to Elijah from the Lord. He said, "Elijah, what are you doing here?"
10 He replied, "Lord God who rules over all, I've been very committed to you. The people of Israel have turned their backs on your covenant. They have torn down your altars. They've put your prophets to death with their swords. I'm the only one left. And they are trying to kill me."
11 The Lord said, "Go out. Stand on the mountain in front of me. I am going to pass by." As the Lord approached, a very powerful wind tore the mountains apart. It broke up the rocks. But the Lord wasn't in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake. But the Lord wasn't in the earthquake.
12 After the earthquake a fire came. But the Lord wasn't in the fire. And after the fire there was only a gentle whisper.
13 When Elijah heard it, he pulled his coat over his face. He went out and stood at the entrance to the cave. Then a voice said to him, "Elijah, what are you doing here?"
14 He replied, "Lord God who rules over all, I've been very committed to you. The people of Israel have turned their backs on your covenant. They have torn down your altars. They've put your prophets to death with their swords. I'm the only one left. And they are trying to kill me."
15 The Lord said to him, "Go back the way you came. Go to the Desert of Damascus. When you get there, anoint Hazael as king over Aram.
16 Also anoint Jehu as king over Israel. He is the son of Nimshi. And anoint Elisha from Abel Meholah as the next prophet after you. He is the son of Shaphat.
17 Jehu will put to death anyone who escapes Hazael's sword. And Elisha will put to death anyone who escapes Jehu's sword.
18 "But I will keep 7,000 people in Israel for myself. They have not bowed down to Baal. And they have not kissed him."
19 Elijah left Mount Horeb. He saw Elisha, the son of Shaphat. Elisha was plowing in a field. He was driving the last of 12 pairs of oxen. Elijah went up to him. He threw his coat around him.
20 Then Elisha left his oxen. He ran after Elijah. "Let me kiss my father and mother good-by," he said. "Then I'll come with you." "Go back," Elijah replied. "What have I done to you?"
21 So Elisha left him and went back. He got his two oxen and killed them. He burned the plow to cook the meat. He gave it to the people, and they ate it. Then he started to follow Elijah. He became Elijah's assistant.

3 And when he saw H7200 W-VIY3MS that , he arose H6965 W-VQY3MS , and went H1980 W-VQY3MS for H413 PREP his life H5315 NMS-3MS , and came H935 W-VQY3MS to Beer H884 - sheba , which H834 RPRO belongeth to Judah H3063 , and left H5117 his servant H5288 there H8033 ADV .
4 But he himself H1931 W-PPRO-3MS went H1980 VQQ3MS a day H3117 NMS \'s journey H1870 NMS into the wilderness H4057 , and came H935 W-VQY3MS and sat down H3427 W-VQY3MS under H8478 NMS a H259 juniper tree H7574 : and he requested H7592 W-VQY3MS for himself H5315 NMS-3MS that he might die H4191 L-VQFC ; and said H559 W-VQY3MS , It is enough H7227 AMS ; now H6258 ADV , O LORD H3068 EDS , take away H3947 VQI2MS my life H5315 CFS-1MS ; for H3588 CONJ I H595 PPRO-1MS am not H3808 NADV better H2896 AMS than my fathers H1 .
5 And as he lay H7901 W-VQY3MS and slept H3462 under H8478 NMS a H259 MMS juniper tree H7574 , behold H2009 , then H2088 DPRO an angel H4397 NMS touched H5060 him , and said H559 W-VQY3MS unto him , Arise H6965 VQI2MS and eat H398 .
6 And he looked H5027 , and , behold H2009 IJEC , there was a cake H5692 baked on the coals H7529 , and a cruse H6835 of water H4325 NMD at his head H4763 . And he did eat H398 and drink H8354 W-VQY3MS , and laid him down H7901 again H7725 .
7 And the angel H4397 of the LORD H3068 EDS came again H7725 the second time H8145 CFS , and touched H5060 W-VQY3MS him , and said H559 W-VQY3MS , Arise H6965 VQI2MS and eat H398 ; because H3588 CONJ the journey H1870 is too great H7227 AMS for H4480 PREP-2MS thee .
8 And he arose H6965 W-VQY3MS , and did eat H398 and drink H8354 , and went H1980 W-VQY3MS in the strength H3581 B-NMS of that H1931 meat H396 forty H705 MMP days H3117 NMS and forty H705 W-MMP nights H3915 GMS unto H5704 PREP Horeb H2722 the mount H2022 CMS of God H430 D-EDP .
9 And he came H935 W-VQY3MS thither H8033 ADV unto H413 PREP a cave H4631 , and lodged H3885 there H8033 ADV ; and , behold H2009 IJEC , the word H1697 NMS of the LORD H3068 EDS came to H413 PREP-3MS him , and he said H559 W-VQY3MS unto him , What H4100 IPRO doest thou here H6311 , Elijah H452 ?
10 And he said H559 W-VQY3MS , I have been very jealous H7065 for the LORD H3068 L-EDS God H430 CDP of hosts H6635 : for H3588 CONJ the children H1121 of Israel H3478 have forsaken H5800 thy covenant H1285 , thrown down H2040 thine altars H4196 , and slain H2026 thy prophets H5030 with the sword H2719 ; and I H589 PPRO-1MS , even I only H905 L-CMS-1MS , am left H3498 ; and they seek H1245 my life H5315 CFS-1MS , to take it away H3947 .
11 And he said H559 W-VQY3MS , Go forth H3318 VQI2MS , and stand H5975 upon the mount H2022 before H6440 L-CMP the LORD H3068 EDS . And , behold H2009 IJEC , the LORD H3068 EDS passed by H5674 , and a great H1419 AMS-3FS and strong H2389 wind H7307 W-GFS rent H6561 the mountains H2022 NMP , and broke in pieces H7665 the rocks H5553 before H6440 L-CMP the LORD H3068 EDS ; but the LORD H3068 EDS was not H3808 NADV in the wind H7307 W-GFS : and after H310 W-ADV the wind H7307 W-GFS an earthquake H7494 ; but the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS was not H3808 NADV in the earthquake H7494 :
12 And after H310 W-ADV the earthquake H7494 a fire H784 CMS ; but the LORD H3068 EDS was not H3808 NADV in the fire H784 : and after H310 W-ADV the fire H784 a still H1827 NFS small H1851 voice H6963 CMS .
13 And it was H1961 W-VQY3MS so , when Elijah H452 heard H8085 it , that he wrapped H3874 his face H6440 CMP-3MS in his mantle H155 , and went out H3318 W-VQY3MS , and stood H5975 in the entering in H6607 CMS of the cave H4631 . And , behold H2009 IJEC , there came a voice H6963 CMS unto H413 PREP-3MS him , and said H559 W-VQY3MS , What H4100 IPRO doest thou here H6311 , Elijah H452 ?
14 And he said H559 W-VQY3MS , I have been very jealous H7065 for the LORD H3068 L-EDS God H430 CDP of hosts H6635 : because H3588 CONJ the children H1121 of Israel H3478 have forsaken H5800 thy covenant H1285 , thrown down H2040 thine altars H4196 , and slain H2026 thy prophets H5030 with the sword H2719 ; and I H589 PPRO-1MS , even I only H905 L-CMS-1MS , am left H3498 ; and they seek H1245 my life H5315 CFS-1MS , to take it away H3947 .
15 And the LORD H3068 EDS said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP-3MS him , Go H1980 VQI2MS , return H7725 VQFC on thy way H1870 to the wilderness H4057 of Damascus H1834 : and when thou comest H935 W-VQQ2MS , anoint H4886 Hazael H2371 to be king H4428 L-CMS over H5921 PREP Syria H758 :
16 And Jehu H3058 the son H1121 CMS of Nimshi H5250 shalt thou anoint H4886 to be king H4428 L-CMS over H5921 PREP Israel H3478 : and Elisha H477 the son H1121 CMS of Shaphat H8202 of Abel H65 - meholah shalt thou anoint H4886 to be prophet H5030 in thy room H8478 .
17 And it shall come to pass H1961 W-VQQ3MS , that him that escapeth H4422 the sword H2719 M-NFS of Hazael H2371 shall Jehu H3058 slay H4191 VHY3MS : and him that escapeth H4422 from the sword H2719 M-NFS of Jehu H3058 shall Elisha H477 slay H4191 VHY3MS .
18 Yet I have left H7604 me seven H7651 RMS thousand H505 MMP in Israel H3478 , all H3605 NMS the knees H1290 which H834 RPRO have not H3808 ADV bowed H3766 unto Baal H1168 , and every H3605 NMS mouth H6310 which H834 RPRO hath not H3808 ADV kissed H5401 him .
19 So he departed H1980 W-VQY3MS thence H8033 M-ADV , and found H4672 W-VQY3MS Elisha H477 the son H1121 of Shaphat H8202 , who H1931 W-PPRO-3MS was plowing H2790 with twelve H8147 yoke H6776 of oxen before H6440 L-CMP-3MS him , and he H1931 W-PPRO-3MS with the twelfth H8147 : and Elijah H452 passed H5674 W-VQY3MS by H413 PREP-3MS him , and cast H7993 his mantle H155 CFS-3MS upon H413 him .
20 And he left H5800 the oxen H1241 D-NMS , and ran H7323 after H310 PREP Elijah H452 , and said H559 W-VQY3MS , Let me , I pray thee H4994 IJEC , kiss H5401 my father H1 and my mother H517 , and then I will follow H1980 thee . And he said H559 W-VQY3MS unto him , Go H1980 VQI2MS back again H7725 VQFC : for H3588 CONJ what H4100 IPRO have I done H6213 VQQ1MS to thee ?
21 And he returned back H7725 from him , and took H3947 W-VQY3MS a yoke H6776 NMS of oxen H1241 D-NMS , and slew H2076 them , and boiled H1310 their flesh H1320 D-NMS with the instruments H3627 of the oxen H1241 D-NMS , and gave H5414 W-VQQ3MS unto the people H5971 , and they did eat H398 . Then he arose H6965 W-VQY3MS , and went H1980 W-VQY3MS after H310 Elijah H452 , and ministered H8334 unto him .
