2 Samuel 16:1 (NIRV) New International Reader's Version

1 David went just beyond the top of the Mount of Olives. Ziba was waiting there to meet him. He was Mephibosheth's manager. He had several donkeys with saddles on them. They were carrying 200 loaves of bread and 100 raisin cakes. They were also carrying 100 fig cakes and a bottle of wine. The bottle was made out of animal skin.
2 The king asked Ziba, "Why have you brought all of these things?" Ziba answered, "The donkeys are for the king's family to ride on. The bread and fruit are for the people to eat. The wine will make those who get tired in the desert feel like new again."
3 Then the king asked, "Where is your master's grandson Mephibosheth?" Ziba said to him, "He's staying in Jerusalem. He thinks, 'Today the people of Israel will give me back my grandfather Saul's kingdom.' "
4 Then the king said to Ziba, "Everything that belonged to Mephibosheth belongs to you now." "You are my king and master," Ziba said. "I make myself low in front of you. I bow down to you. May you be pleased with me."
5 King David approached Bahurim. As he did, a man came out toward him. The man was from the same family group that Saul was from. His name was Shimei. He was the son of Gera. As he came out of the town, he called down curses on David.
6 He threw stones at David and all of his officials. He did it even though all of the troops and the special guard were there. They were to the right and left of David.
7 As Shimei called down curses, he said, "Get out! Get out, you murderer! You are a worthless and evil man!
8 You spilled the blood of a lot of people in Saul's family. You took over his kingdom. Now the Lord is paying you back. He has handed the kingdom over to your son Absalom. You have been destroyed because you are a murderer!"
9 Then Abishai, the son of Zeruiah, spoke to the king. He said, "King David, why should we let this dead dog call down curses on you? Let me go over there. I'll cut off his head."
10 But the king said, "You and Joab are sons of Zeruiah. What do you and I have in common? Maybe the Lord said to him, 'Call down curses on David.' If he did, who can ask him, 'Why are you doing this?' "
11 Then David spoke to Abishai and all of his officials. He said, "My very own son Absalom is trying to kill me. How much more should this man from Benjamin want to kill me! Leave him alone. Let him call down curses. The Lord has told him to do it.
12 Maybe the Lord will see how much I'm suffering. Maybe he'll reward me with good things in place of the curses that are being called down on me today."
13 So David and his men kept going along the road. At the same time, Shimei was going along the hillside across from him. He was calling down curses as he went. He was throwing stones at David. He was showering him with dirt.
14 The king and all of the people who were with him came to the place they had planned to go to. They were very tired. So David rested there.
15 During that time, Absalom and all of the men of Israel came to Jerusalem. Ahithophel was with him.
16 Then Hushai, the Arkite, went to Absalom. He said to him, "May the king live a long time! May the king live a long time!" Hushai was David's friend.
17 Absalom asked Hushai, "Is this the way you show love to your friend? Why didn't you go with him?"
18 Hushai said to Absalom, "Why should I? You are the one the Lord has chosen. These people and all of the men of Israel have also chosen you. I want to be on your side. I want to stay with you.
19 After all, who else should I serve? Shouldn't I serve the king's son? I will serve you, just as I served your father."
20 Absalom said to Ahithophel, "Give us your advice. What should we do?"
21 Ahithophel answered, "Your father left some concubines behind to take care of the palace. Go and have sex with them. Then all of the people of Israel will hear about it. They will hear that you have made yourself smell very bad to your father. Everyone who is with you will become braver."
22 So they set up a tent for Absalom on the roof of the palace. He went in and had sex with his father's concubines. Everyone in Israel saw it.
23 In those days the advice Ahithophel gave was as good as advice from someone who asks God for guidance. That's what David and Absalom thought about all of Ahithopel's advice.
1 And when David H1732 was a little H4592 AMS past H5674 VQQ3MS the top H7218 of the hill , behold H2009 IJEC , Ziba H6717 the servant H5288 of Mephibosheth H4648 met H7125 him , with a couple H6776 of asses H2543 saddled H2280 , and upon H5921 them two hundred H3967 MFD loaves of bread H3899 NMS , and a hundred H3967 bunches of raisins H6778 , and a hundred H3967 of summer fruits H7019 , and a bottle H5035 of wine H3196 .
2 And the king H4428 D-NMS said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP Ziba H6717 , What H4100 IGAT meanest thou by these H428 PMP ? And Ziba H6717 said H559 W-VQY3MS , The asses H2543 be for the king H4428 D-NMS \'s household H1004 to ride on H7392 ; and the bread H3899 and summer fruit H7019 for the young men H5288 D-NMP to eat H398 ; and the wine H3196 , that such as be faint H3287 in the wilderness H4057 may drink H8354 .
3 And the king H4428 D-NMS said H559 W-VQY3MS , And where H346 W-IGAT is thy master H113 \'s son H1121 ? And Ziba H6717 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP the king H4428 D-NMS , Behold H2009 IJEC , he abideth H3427 VQPMS at Jerusalem H3389 : for H3588 CONJ he said H559 W-VQY3MS , Today H3117 D-AMS shall the house H1004 CMS of Israel H3478 restore H7725 me the kingdom H4468 of my father H1 .
4 Then said H559 W-VQY3MS the king H4428 D-NMS to Ziba H6717 , Behold H2009 IJEC , thine are all H3605 NMS that H834 RPRO pertained unto Mephibosheth H4648 . And Ziba H6717 said H559 W-VQY3MS , I humbly beseech H7812 thee that I may find H4672 VQY1MS grace H2580 NMS in thy sight H5869 , my lord H113 , O king H4428 .
5 And when king H4428 D-NMS David H1732 MMS came H935 to H5704 PREP Bahurim H980 , behold H2009 IJEC , thence H8033 M-ADV came out H3318 a man H376 NMS of the family H4940 M-CFS of the house H1004 CMS of Saul H7586 , whose name H8034 was Shimei H8096 , the son H1121 CMS of Gera H1617 : he came forth H3318 VQPMS , and cursed H7043 still as he came H3318 VQFA .
6 And he cast H5619 stones H68 at David H1732 MMS , and at all H3605 NMS the servants H5650 of king H4428 D-NMS David H1732 MMS : and all H3605 NMS the people H5971 and all H3605 NMS the mighty men H1368 D-AMP were on his right hand H3225 and on his left H8040 .
7 And thus H3541 said H559 VQQ3MS Shimei H8096 when he cursed H7043 , Come out H3318 VQI2MS , come out H3318 VQI2MS , thou bloody H1818 man H376 NMS , and thou man H376 NMS of Belial H1100 :
8 The LORD H3068 EDS hath returned H7725 VHQ3MS upon H5921 PREP-2MS thee all H3605 NMS the blood H1818 CMP of the house H1004 CMS of Saul H7586 , in whose H834 RPRO stead H8478 PREP-3MS thou hast reigned H4427 ; and the LORD H3068 EDS hath delivered H5414 W-VQQ3MS the kingdom H4410 into the hand H3027 B-CFS of Absalom H53 thy son H1121 : and , behold H2009 , thou art taken in thy mischief H7451 , because H3588 CONJ thou H859 PPRO-2MS art a bloody H1818 man H376 NMS .
9 Then said H559 W-VQY3MS Abishai H52 the son H1121 of Zeruiah H6870 unto H413 PREP the king H4428 D-NMS , Why H4100 L-IPRO should this H2088 D-PMS dead H4191 dog H3611 curse H7043 my lord H113 the king H4428 D-NMS ? let me go over H5674 , I pray thee H4994 IJEC , and take off H5493 his head H7218 CMP-3MS .
10 And the king H4428 D-NMS said H559 W-VQY3MS , What H4100 IPRO have I to do with you , ye sons H1121 of Zeruiah H6870 ? so H3541 let him curse H7043 , because H3588 the LORD H3068 EDS hath said H559 W-VQY3MS unto him , Curse H7043 David H1732 MMS . Who H4310 W-IPRO shall then say H559 W-VQY3MS , Wherefore H4069 IPRO hast thou done H6213 so H3651 ADV ?
11 And David H1732 MMS said H559 W-VQY3MS to H413 PREP Abishai H52 , and to H413 PREP all H3605 NMS his servants H5650 , Behold H2009 IJEC , my son H1121 , which H834 RPRO came forth H3318 VQQ3MS of my bowels H4578 , seeketh H1245 my life H5315 CFS-1MS : how much more H637 W-CONJ now H6258 ADV may this Benjamite H1145 do it ? let him alone H5117 , and let him curse H7043 ; for H3588 CONJ the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS hath bidden H559 W-VQY3MS him .
12 It may be H194 ADV that the LORD H3068 EDS will look H7200 VQY3MS on mine affliction H6040 , and that the LORD H3068 EDS will requite H7725 me good H2896 NFS for H8478 NMS his cursing H7045 this H2088 D-PMS day H3117 D-AMS .
13 And as David H1732 MMS and his men H376 went H1980 W-VQY3MS by the way H1870 , Shimei H8096 went along H1980 on the hill H2022 \'s side H6763 over against H5980 him , and cursed H7043 W-VPY3MS as he went H1980 VQFA , and threw H5619 stones H68 at H5980 him , and cast H6080 dust H6083 .
14 And the king H4428 D-NMS , and all H3605 W-CMS the people H5971 that H834 RPRO were with H854 PREP-3MS him , came H935 W-VQY3MS weary H5889 , and refreshed themselves H5314 there H8033 ADV .
15 And Absalom H53 , and all H3605 W-CMS the people H5971 the men H376 NMS of Israel H3478 , came H935 VQQ3MP to Jerusalem H3389 , and Ahithophel H302 with H854 PREP-3MS him .
16 And it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS , when H834 Hushai H2365 the Archite H757 , David H1732 \'s friend H7463 , was come H935 VQPMS unto H413 PREP Absalom H53 , that Hushai H2365 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP Absalom H53 , God save H2421 the king H4428 D-NMS , God save H2421 the king H4428 .
17 And Absalom H53 said H559 W-VQY3MS to H413 PREP Hushai H2365 , Is this H2088 DPRO thy kindness H2617 to thy friend H7453 ? why H4100 L-IPRO wentest H1980 thou not H3808 ADV with H854 PREP thy friend H7453 ?
18 And Hushai H2365 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP Absalom H53 , Nay H3808 NADV ; but H3588 CONJ whom H834 RPRO the LORD H3068 EDS , and this H2088 D-PMS people H5971 , and all H3605 W-CMS the men H376 NMS of Israel H3478 , choose H977 , his will I be H1961 VQY1MS , and with H854 him will I abide H3427 .
19 And again H8145 , whom H4310 L-IPRO should I H589 PPRO-1MS serve H5647 ? should I not H3808 D-NPAR serve in the presence H6440 L-CMP of his son H1121 ? as H834 K-RPRO I have served H5647 in thy father H1 NMS \'s presence H6440 L-CMP , so H3651 ADV will I be H1961 VQY1MS in thy presence H6440 L-CMP .
20 Then said H559 W-VQY3MS Absalom H53 to H413 PREP Ahithophel H302 , Give H3051 VQI2MP counsel H6098 NFS among you what H4100 IGAT we shall do H6213 .
21 And Ahithophel H302 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP Absalom H53 , Go H935 VQFC in unto H413 PREP thy father H1 NMS \'s concubines H6370 , which H834 RPRO he hath left H5117 to keep H8104 the house H1004 ; and all H3605 NMS Israel H3478 shall hear H8085 that H3588 CONJ thou art abhorred H887 of H854 PREP thy father H1 NMS : then shall the hands H3027 CFD of all H3605 NMS that H834 RPRO are with H854 PART-2FS thee be strong H2388 .
22 So they spread H5186 Absalom H53 a tent H168 upon H5921 PREP the top H1406 of the house ; and Absalom H53 went H935 W-VQY3MS in unto H413 PREP his father H1 CMS-3MS \'s concubines H6370 in the sight H5869 of all H3605 NMS Israel H3478 LMS .
23 And the counsel H6098 W-CFS of Ahithophel H302 , which H834 RPRO he counseled H3289 in those H1992 D-PPRO-3MP days H3117 BD-NMP , was as H834 RPRO if a man H376 had inquired H7592 at the oracle H1697 of God H430 D-EDP : so H3651 ADV was all H3605 NMS the counsel H6098 CFS of Ahithophel H302 both H1571 CONJ with David H1732 L-NAME and H1571 CONJ with Absalom H53 .
