Judges 2:1 (NIRV) New International Reader's Version

1 The angel of the Lord went up from Gilgal to Bokim. There he spoke to the people of Israel. "I brought you up out of Egypt," he said. "I led you into this land. It is the land I promised with an oath to give to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. I said, 'I will never break the covenant I made with you.
2 So you must not make a covenant with the people of this land. Instead, you must tear down their altars.' "But you have disobeyed me. Why did you do it?
3 I have something to tell you. I will not drive those people out to make room for you. They will be like thorns in your sides. Their gods will be a trap to you."
4 The angel of the Lord spoke those things to all of the people of Israel. Then the people began to sob out loud.
5 So that place was called Bokim. The people offered sacrifices to the Lord there.
6 Joshua sent the people of Israel away. Then they went to take over the land. All of them went to their own shares of land.
7 The people served the Lord as long as Joshua lived. They also served him as long as the elders lived. Those were the elders who lived longer than Joshua did. They had seen all of the great things the Lord had done for Israel.
8 Joshua, the servant of the Lord, died. He was the son of Nun. He was 110 years old when he died.
9 His people buried his body on his own property at Timnath Heres. It's north of Mount Gaash in the hill country of Ephraim.
10 All of the people of Joshua's time joined the members of their families who had already died. Then those who were born after them grew up. They didn't know the Lord. They didn't know what he had done for Israel.
11 The people of Israel did what was evil in the sight of the Lord. They served the gods that were named after Baal.
12 They deserted the Lord, the God of their people. He had brought them out of Egypt. But now the people of Israel followed other gods and worshiped them. They served the gods of the nations that were around them. They made the Lord angry
13 because they deserted him. They served Baal. They also served the goddesses that were named after Ashtoreth.
14 The Lord became angry with Israel. So he handed them over to robbers. The robbers stole everything from them. He gave them over to their enemies who were all around them. Israel wasn't able to fight against them anymore and win.
15 When Israel went out to fight, the Lord's power was against them. He let their enemies win the battle over them. The Lord had warned them with an oath that it would happen. And now they were suffering terribly.
16 Then the Lord gave them leaders. The leaders saved them from the power of those robbers.
17 But the people wouldn't listen to their leaders. They weren't faithful to the Lord. They joined themselves to other gods and worshiped them. They didn't obey the Lord's commands as their people before them had done. They quickly turned away from the path their people had taken.
18 When the Lord gave them a leader, he was with that leader. He saved the people from the power of their enemies. He did it as long as the leader lived. He was very sorry for the people. They groaned because of what their enemies did to them. The enemies beat them down. They treated them badly.
19 But when the leader died, the people returned to their evil ways. The things they did were even more sinful than the things their people before them had done. They followed other gods. They served them. They worshiped them. They refused to give up their evil practices. They wouldn't change their stubborn ways.
20 So the Lord's anger burned against the people of Israel. He said, "This nation has broken my covenant. I made it with their people of long ago. But this nation has not listened to me.
21 Joshua left some nations in the land when he died. I will not drive those nations out to make room for you anymore.
22 I will use them to put Israel to the test. I will see whether Israel will live the way I want them to. I will see whether they will follow my path, just as their people did long ago."
23 The Lord had let those nations remain in the land. He didn't drive them out right away. He didn't hand them over to Joshua.
1 And an angel H4397 of the LORD H3068 EDS came up H5927 W-VHY3MS from H4480 PREP Gilgal H1537 to H413 PREP Bochim H1066 , and said H559 W-VQY3MS , I made you to go up H5927 out of Egypt H4714 M-TFS , and have brought H935 you unto H413 PREP the land H776 D-GFS which H834 RPRO I swore H7650 unto your fathers H1 ; and I said H559 W-VQY3MS , I will never H3808 ADV break H6565 my covenant H1285 B-CFS-1MS with H854 PART-2MP you .
2 And ye H859 W-PPRO-2MP shall make H3772 no H3808 ADV league H1285 CFS with the inhabitants H3427 of this H2063 D-DFS land H776 D-GFS ; ye shall throw down H5422 their altars H4196 : but ye have not H3808 ADV obeyed H8085 my voice H6963 : why H4100 IPRO have ye done H6213 this H2063 DPRO-3FS ?
3 Wherefore I also H1571 W-CONJ said H559 VQQ1MS , I will not H3808 ADV drive them out H1644 from before H6440 you ; but they shall be H1961 W-VQQ3MS as thorns in your sides H6654 , and their gods H430 shall be H1961 VQY3MP a snare H4170 unto you .
4 And it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS , when the angel H4397 of the LORD H3068 EDS spoke H1696 K-VPFC these H428 D-DPRO-3MP words H1697 AMP unto H413 PREP all H3605 NMS the children H1121 of Israel H3478 , that the people H5971 lifted up H5375 W-VQY3MP their voice H6963 CMS-3MP , and wept H1058 .
5 And they called H7121 the name H8034 of that H1931 D-PPRO-3MS place H4725 D-NMS Bochim H1066 : and they sacrificed H2076 there H8033 ADV unto the LORD H3068 L-NAME-4MS .
6 And when Joshua H3091 had let the people H5971 go H7971 W-VPY3MS , the children H1121 of Israel H3478 went H1980 W-VQY3MP every man H376 NMS unto his inheritance H5159 to possess H3423 the land H776 D-GFS .
7 And the people H5971 served H5647 the LORD H3068 EDS all H3605 NMS the days H3117 CMP of Joshua H3091 , and all H3605 NMS the days H3117 CMP of the elders H2205 that H834 RPRO outlived H748 Joshua H3091 , who H834 RPRO had seen H7200 VQQ3MP all H3605 NMS the great H1419 D-AMS works H4639 M-CMS of the LORD H3068 EDS , that H834 RPRO he did H6213 VQQ3MS for Israel H3478 .
8 And Joshua H3091 the son H1121 of Nun H5126 , the servant H5650 NMS of the LORD H3068 EDS , died H4191 W-VQY3MS , being a hundred H3967 MFS and ten H6235 years H8141 old H1121 .
9 And they buried H6912 him in the border H1366 of his inheritance H5159 in Timnath H8556 - heres , in the mount H2022 of Ephraim H669 , on the north side H6828 of the hill H2022 Gaash H1608 .
10 And also H1571 W-CONJ all H3605 NMS that H1931 D-PPRO-3MS generation H1755 were gathered H622 unto H413 PREP their fathers H1 : and there arose H6965 W-VQY3MS another H312 AMS generation H1755 after H310 them , which H834 RPRO knew H3045 not H3808 NADV the LORD H3068 EDS , nor yet H1571 W-CONJ the works H4639 which H834 RPRO he had done H6213 VQQ3MS for Israel H3478 .
11 And the children H1121 of Israel H3478 did H6213 W-VQY3MP evil H7451 in the sight H5869 B-CMP of the LORD H3068 EDS , and served H5647 Baalim H1168 :
12 And they forsook H5800 the LORD H3068 EDS God H430 NAME-4MP of their fathers H1 CMP-3MP , which brought them out H3318 of the land H776 M-NFS of Egypt H4714 EFS , and followed H1980 W-VQY3MP other H312 AMP gods H430 EDP , of the gods H430 NAME-4MP of the people H5971 that H834 RPRO were round about H5439 them , and bowed themselves H7812 unto them , and provoked H3707 the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS to anger H3707 .
13 And they forsook H5800 the LORD H3068 EDS , and served H5647 Baal H1168 and Ashtaroth H6252 .
14 And the anger H639 CMS of the LORD H3068 EDS was hot H2734 against Israel H3478 , and he delivered H5414 them into the hands H3027 B-CFS of spoilers H8154 that spoiled H8155 them , and he sold H4376 them into the hands H3027 B-CFS of their enemies H341 round about H5439 M-ADV , so that they could H3201 not H3808 W-NPAR any longer H5750 ADV stand H5975 before H6440 L-CMP their enemies H341 .
15 Whithersoever H3605 they went out H3318 VQQ3MP , the hand H3027 CFS of the LORD H3068 EDS was H1961 VQQ3FS against them for evil H7451 , as H834 RPRO the LORD H3068 EDS had said H1696 VPQ3MS , and as H834 RPRO the LORD H3068 EDS had sworn H7650 unto them : and they were greatly H3966 ADV distressed H3334 .
16 Nevertheless the LORD H3068 EDS raised up H6965 judges H8199 , which delivered H3467 them out of the hand H3027 M-GFS of those that spoiled H8154 them .
17 And yet H1571 W-CONJ they would not H3808 NADV hearken H8085 unto H413 PREP their judges H8199 , but H3588 CONJ they went a whoring H2181 after H310 ADV other H312 AMP gods H430 EDP , and bowed themselves H7812 unto them : they turned H5493 VQQ3MP quickly H4118 out of H4480 PREP the way H1870 D-NMS which H834 RPRO their fathers H1 CMP-3MP walked H1980 VQQ3MP in , obeying H8085 the commandments H4687 of the LORD H3068 EDS ; but they did H6213 VQQ3MP not H3808 NADV so H3651 ADV .
18 And when H3588 CONJ the LORD H3068 EDS raised them up H6965 judges H8199 , then the LORD H3068 EDS was H1961 W-VQQ3MS with H5973 PREP the judge H8199 , and delivered H3467 them out of the hand H3027 M-GFS of their enemies H341 all H3605 NMS the days H3117 CMP of the judge H8199 : for H3588 CONJ it repented H5162 the LORD H3068 EDS because of their groanings H5009 by reason of them H6440 M-CMP that oppressed H3905 them and vexed H1766 them .
19 And it came to pass H1961 W-VQQ3MS , when the judge H8199 was dead H4191 , that they returned H7725 , and corrupted H7843 themselves more than their fathers H1 , in following H1980 L-VQFC other H312 AMP gods H430 EDP to serve H5647 them , and to bow down H7812 unto them ; they ceased H5307 not H3808 NADV from their own doings H4611 , nor from their stubborn way H1 870 H7186 .
20 And the anger H639 CMS of the LORD H3068 EDS was hot H2734 against Israel H3478 ; and he said H559 W-VQY3MS , Because H3282 ADV that H834 RPRO this H2088 D-PMS people H1471 hath transgressed H5674 VQQ3MP my covenant H1285 B-CFS-1MS which H834 RPRO I commanded H6680 their fathers H1 CMP-3MP , and have not H3808 W-NPAR hearkened H8085 VQQ3MP unto my voice H6963 ;
21 I H589 PPRO-1MS also H1571 CONJ will not H3808 NADV henceforth H3254 VHY1MS drive out H3423 any H376 NMS from before H6440 M-CMP-3MP them of H4480 PREP the nations H1471 D-NMP which H834 RPRO Joshua H3091 left H5800 VQQ3MS when he died H4191 W-VQY3MS :
22 That H4616 L-CONJ through them I may prove H5254 Israel H3478 , whether they H1992 PPRO-3MP will keep H8104 the way H1870 NMS of the LORD H3068 EDS to walk H1980 L-VQFC therein , as H834 K-RPRO their fathers H1 CMP-3MP did keep H8104 it , or H518 PART not H3808 ADV .
23 Therefore the LORD H3068 EDS left H5117 those H428 D-DPRO-3MP nations H1471 D-NMP , without H1115 L-NPAR driving them out H3423 hastily H4118 ; neither H3808 W-NPAR delivered H5414 he them into the hand H3027 B-CFS of Joshua H3091 .
