2 Kings 5:1 (NIRV) New International Reader's Version

1 Naaman was commander of the army of the king of Aram. He was a very important man in the eyes of his master. And he was highly respected. That's because the Lord had helped him win the battle over Aram's enemies. He was a brave soldier. But he had a skin disease.
2 Companies of soldiers from Aram had marched out. They had captured a young girl from Israel. She became a servant of Naaman's wife.
3 She spoke to the woman she was serving. She said, "I wish my master would go and see the prophet who is in Samaria. He would heal my master of his skin disease."
4 Naaman went to see his own master. He told him what the girl from Israel had said.
5 "I think you should go," the king of Aram replied. "I'll give you a letter to take to the king of Israel." So Naaman left. He took 750 pounds of silver with him. He also took 150 pounds of gold. And he took ten sets of clothes.
6 He carried the letter to the king of Israel. It said, "I'm sending my servant Naaman to you with this letter. I want you to heal him of his skin disease."
7 The king of Israel read the letter. As soon as he did, he tore his royal robes. He said, "Am I God? Can I kill people and bring them back to life? Why does this fellow send someone to me to be healed of his skin disease? He must be trying to pick a fight with me!"
8 Elisha, the man of God, heard that the king of Israel had torn his robes. So he sent the king a message. It said, "Why have you torn your robes? Tell the man to come to me. Then he will know there is a prophet in Israel."
9 So Naaman went to see Elisha. He took his horses and chariots with him. He stopped at the door of Elisha's house.
10 Elisha sent a messenger out to him. The messenger said, "Go. Wash yourself in the Jordan River seven times. Then your skin will be healed. You will be pure and clean again."
11 But Naaman went away angry. He said, "I was sure he would come out to me. I thought he would stand there and pray to the Lord his God. I thought he would wave his hand over my skin. Then I would be healed.
12 And what about the Abana and Pharpar rivers of Damascus? Aren't they better than any of the rivers of Israel? Couldn't I wash in them and be made pure and clean?" So he turned and went away. He was burning with anger.
13 Naaman's servants went over to him. They said, "You are like a father to us. What if the prophet Elisha had told you to do some great thing? Wouldn't you have done it? But he only said, 'Wash yourself. Then you will be pure and clean.' You should be even more willing to do that!"
14 So Naaman went down to the Jordan River. He dipped himself in it seven times. He did exactly what the man of God had told him to do. Then his skin was made pure again. It became clean like the skin of a young boy.
15 Naaman and all of his attendants went back to the man of God. Naaman stood in front of Elisha. He said, "Now I know that there is no God anywhere in the whole world except in Israel. Please accept a gift from me."
16 The prophet answered, "I serve the Lord. You can be sure that he lives. And you can be just as sure that I won't accept a gift from you." Even though Naaman begged him to take it, Elisha wouldn't.
17 "I can see that you won't accept a gift from me," said Naaman. "But please let me have some soil from your land. Give me as much as a pair of mules can carry. Here's why I want it. I won't ever bring burnt offerings and sacrifices to any other god again. I'll bring them only to the Lord. I'll worship him on his own soil.
18 "But there is one thing I hope the Lord will forgive me for. From time to time my master will enter the temple to bow down to his god Rimmon. When he does, he'll lean on my arm. Then I'll have to bow down there also. I hope the Lord will forgive me for that."
19 "Go in peace," Elisha said. Naaman started out on his way.
20 Gehazi was the servant of Elisha, the man of God. Gehazi said to himself, "My master was too easy on Naaman from Aram. He should have accepted the gift he brought. I'm going to run after Naaman. I'm going to get something from him. And that's just as sure as the Lord is alive."
21 Gehazi hurried after Naaman. Naaman saw him running toward him. So he got down from the chariot to greet him. "Is everything all right?" he asked.
22 "Everything is all right," Gehazi answered. "My master sent me to say, 'Two young men from the company of the prophets have just come to me. They've come from the hill country of Ephraim. Please give them 75 pounds of silver and two sets of clothes.' "
23 "I wish you would take twice as much silver," said Naaman. He begged Gehazi to accept it. Then Naaman tied up 150 pounds of silver in two bags. He also gave Gehazi two sets of clothes. He gave all of it to two of his own servants. They carried it ahead of Gehazi.
24 Gehazi came to the hill where Elisha lived. Then the servants handed the things over to Gehazi. He put them away in Elisha's house. He sent the men away, and they left.
25 Then he went back inside the house. He stood in front of his master Elisha. "Gehazi, where have you been?" Elisha asked. "I didn't go anywhere," Gehazi answered.
26 But Elisha said to him, "Didn't my spirit go with you? I know that the man got down from his chariot to greet you. Is this the time for you to accept money or clothes? Is it the time to take olive groves, vineyards, flocks or herds? Is it the time to accept male and female servants?
27 You and your children after you will have Naaman's skin disease forever." Then Gehazi left Elisha. And he had Naaman's skin disease. His skin was as white as snow.

2 And the Syrians H758 had gone out H3318 VQQ3MP by companies H1416 , and had brought away captive H7617 out of the land H776 M-NFS of Israel H3478 a little H6996 maid H5291 ; and she waited H6440 L-CMP on Naaman H5283 \'s wife H802 CFS .
3 And she said H559 W-VQY3FS unto H413 PREP her mistress H1404 , Would God H305 my lord H113 were with H6440 L-CMP the prophet H5030 that H834 RPRO is in Samaria H8111 ! for H227 ADV he would recover H622 him of his leprosy H6883 .
4 And one went in H935 W-VQY3MS , and told H5046 W-VHY3MS his lord H113 , saying H559 L-VQFC , Thus H2063 and thus H2063 said H1696 VPQ3FS the maid H5291 that H834 RPRO is of the land H776 M-NFS of Israel H3478 LMS .
5 And the king H4428 NMS of Syria H758 EMS said H559 W-VQY3MS , Go to H1980 L-PPRO-2MS , go H935 , and I will send H7971 a letter H5612 CMS unto H413 PREP the king H4428 NMS of Israel H3478 . And he departed H1980 W-VQY3MS , and took H3947 W-VQY3MS with H3027 B-CFS-3MS him ten H6235 MFS talents H3603 of silver H3701 , and six H8337 W-BMS thousand H505 MMP pieces of gold H2091 NMS , and ten H6235 changes H2487 NFP of raiment H899 .
6 And he brought H935 W-VHY3MS the letter H5612 to H413 PREP the king H4428 NMS of Israel H3478 , saying H559 L-VQFC , Now H6258 W-ADV when this H2088 D-PMS letter H5612 is come H935 K-VQFC unto H413 PREP thee , behold H2009 IJEC , I have therewith sent H7971 Naaman H5283 my servant H5650 CMS-1MS to H413 PREP thee , that thou mayest recover H622 him of his leprosy H6883 .
7 And it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS , when the king H4428 NMS of Israel H3478 had read H7121 the letter H5612 , that he rent H7167 W-VQY3MS his clothes H899 , and said H559 W-VQY3MS , Am I H589 PPRO-1MS God H430 , to kill H4191 and to make alive H2421 , that H3588 CONJ this H2088 DPRO man doth send H7971 unto H413 PREP-1MS me to recover H622 a man H376 NMS of his leprosy H6883 ? wherefore H389 ADV consider H3045 , I pray you H4994 IJEC , and see H7200 how H3588 CONJ he H1931 PPRO-3MS seeketh a quarrel H579 against me .
8 And it was H1961 W-VQY3MS so , when Elisha H477 the man H376 NMS of God H430 D-EDP had heard H8085 that H3588 CONJ the king H4428 NMS of Israel H3478 had rent H7167 his clothes H899 , that he sent H7971 W-VQY3MS to H413 PREP the king H4428 NMS , saying H559 L-VQFC , Wherefore H4100 L-IPRO hast thou rent H7167 thy clothes H899 CMP-2MS ? let him come H935 VQY3MS now H4994 IJEC to H413 PREP me , and he shall know H3045 W-VQQ3MS that H3588 CONJ there is H3426 PART a prophet H5030 in Israel H3478 .
9 So Naaman H5283 came H935 W-VQY3MS with his horses H5483 and with his chariot H7393 , and stood H5975 W-VQY3MS at the door H6607 of the house H1004 D-NMS of Elisha H477 .
10 And Elisha H477 sent H7971 W-VQY3MS a messenger H4397 NMS unto H413 PREP-3MS him , saying H559 L-VQFC , Go H1980 VQFA and wash H7364 in Jordan H3383 seven H7651 times H6471 NFP , and thy flesh H1320 shall come again H7725 to thee , and thou shalt be clean H2891 .
11 But Naaman H5283 was wroth H7107 , and went away H1980 W-VQY3MS , and said H559 W-VQY3MS , Behold H2009 IJEC , I thought H559 W-VQY3MS , He will surely come out H3318 VQY3MS to H413 PREP me , and stand H5975 W-VQQ3MS , and call H7121 on the name H8034 B-CMS of the LORD H3068 EDS his God H430 CMP-3MS , and strike H5130 his hand H3027 CFS-3MS over H413 PREP the place H4725 D-NMS , and recover H622 the leper H6879 .
12 Are not H3808 I-NADV Abana H71 and Pharpar H6554 , rivers H5104 of Damascus H1834 , better H2896 AMS than all H3605 M-CMS the waters H4325 of Israel H3478 ? may I not H3808 I-NPAR wash H7364 in them , and be clean H2891 ? So he turned H6437 and went away H1980 W-VQY3MS in a rage H2534 .
13 And his servants H5650 came near H5066 , and spoke H1696 W-VPY3MP unto H413 PREP-3MS him , and said H559 W-VQY3MP , My father H1 CMS-1MS , if the prophet H5030 had bid H1696 VPQ3MS thee do some great H1419 AMS thing H1697 VQPMS , wouldest thou not H3808 D-NPAR have done H6213 it ? how much rather H637 W-CONJ then , when H3588 CONJ he saith H559 VQQ3MS to H413 PREP-2MS thee , Wash H7364 , and be clean H2891 ?
14 Then went he down H3381 W-VQY3MS , and dipped H2881 himself seven H7651 MFS times H6471 NFP in Jordan H3383 , according to the saying H1697 K-NMS of the man H376 NMS of God H430 D-EDP : and his flesh H1320 CMS-3MS came again H7725 like unto the flesh H1320 of a little H6996 AMS child H5288 , and he was clean H2891 .
15 And he returned H7725 to H413 PREP the man H376 NMS of God H430 NAME-4MP , he H1931 PPRO-3MS and all H3605 his company H4264 , and came H935 W-VQY3MS , and stood H5975 W-VQY3MS before H6440 L-CMP-3MS him : and he said H559 W-VQY3MS , Behold H2009 IJEC , now H4994 IJEC I know H3045 VQY1MS that H3588 CONJ there is no H369 NPAR God H430 EDP in all H3605 B-CMS the earth H776 D-GFS , but H518 PART in Israel H3478 : now H6258 W-ADV therefore , I pray thee H4994 IJEC , take H3947 VQI2MS a blessing H1293 of thy servant H5650 .
16 But he said H559 W-VQY3MS , As the LORD H3068 EDS liveth H2416 AMS , before H6440 L-CMP-3MS whom H834 RPRO I stand H5975 VQQ1MS , I will receive H3947 none . And he urged H6484 him to take H3947 L-VQFC it ; but he refused H3985 .
17 And Naaman H5283 said H559 W-VQY3MS , Shall there not H3808 then , I pray thee H4994 IJEC , be given H5414 VWY3MS to thy servant H5650 two mules H6776 CMS \' burden H4853 of earth H127 ? for H3588 CONJ thy servant H5650 will henceforth H5750 ADV offer H6213 VQY3MS neither H3808 burnt offering H5930 nor sacrifice H2077 unto other H312 AMP gods H430 , but H518 PART unto the LORD H3068 .
18 In this H2088 D-PMS thing H1697 the LORD H3068 EDS pardon H5545 thy servant H5650 , that when my master H113 goeth H935 into the house H1004 CMS of Rimmon H7417 to worship H7812 there H8033 ADV-3FS , and he H1931 W-PPRO-3MS leaneth H8172 on H5921 PREP my hand H3027 CFS-1MS , and I bow myself H7812 in the house H1004 CMS of Rimmon H7417 : when I bow down myself H7812 in the house H1004 CMS of Rimmon H7417 , the LORD H3068 EDS pardon H5545 thy servant H5650 in this H2088 D-PMS thing H1697 .
19 And he said H559 W-VQY3MS unto him , Go H1980 VQI2MS in peace H7965 . So he departed H1980 W-VQY3MS from him a little way H776 GFS .
20 But Gehazi H1522 , the servant H5288 of Elisha H477 the man H376 NMS of God H430 D-EDP , said H559 W-VQY3MS , Behold H2009 IJEC , my master H113 hath spared H2820 Naaman H5283 this H2088 D-PMS Syrian H761 , in not receiving H3947 at his hands H3027 M-CFS-3MS that which H834 RPRO he brought H935 VHQ3MS : but H518 PART , as the LORD H3068 EDS liveth H2416 AMS , I will run H7323 after H310 PREP-3MS him , and take H3947 somewhat H3972 of him .
21 So Gehazi H1522 followed H7291 W-VQY3MS after H310 PREP Naaman H5283 . And when Naaman H5283 saw H7200 him running H7323 VQPMS after H310 PREP-3MS him , he lighted down H5307 W-VQY3MS from M-PREP the chariot H4818 to meet H7122 him , and said H559 W-VQY3MS , Is all well H7965 ?
22 And he said H559 W-VQY3MS , All is well H7965 NMS . My master H113 hath sent H7971 me , saying H559 W-VQY3MS , Behold H2009 IJEC , even now H6258 ADV there be come H935 VQQ3MP to H413 PREP-1MS me from mount H2022 Ephraim H669 two H8147 young men H5288 NMP of the sons H1121 of the prophets H5030 : give H5414 them , I pray thee H4994 IJEC , a talent H3603 CFS of silver H3701 NMS , and two H8147 changes H2487 of garments H899 .
23 And Naaman H5283 said H559 W-VQY3MS , Be content H2974 , take H3947 VQI2MS two talents H3603 . And he urged H6555 him , and bound H6696 two talents H3603 of silver H3701 NMS in two H8147 bags H2754 , with two H8147 changes H2487 of garments H899 , and laid H5414 W-VQQ3MS them upon H413 PREP two H8147 ONUM of his servants H5288 ; and they bore H5375 W-VQY3MP them before H6440 him .
24 And when he came H935 W-VQY3MS to H413 PREP the tower H6076 , he took H3947 W-VQY3MS them from their hand H3027 , and bestowed H6485 them in the house H1004 : and he let the men H376 go H7971 W-VPY3MS , and they departed H1980 W-VQY3MP .
25 But he H1931 W-PPRO-3MS went in H935 , and stood H5975 W-VQY3MS before H413 PREP his master H113 . And Elisha H477 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP-3MS him , Whence H370 comest thou , Gehazi H1522 ? And he said H559 W-VQY3MS , Thy servant H5650 went H1980 VQQ3MS no H3808 ADV whither H575 .
26 And he said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP-3MS him , Went H1980 VQQ3MS not H3808 NADV mine heart H3820 NMS-1MS with thee , when H834 K-RPRO the man H376 NMS turned again H2015 from M-PREP his chariot H4818 to meet H7122 thee ? Is it a time H6256 to receive H3947 L-VQFC money H3701 , and to receive H3947 garments H899 , and oliveyards H2132 , and vineyards H3754 , and sheep H6629 , and oxen H1241 W-NMS , and menservants H5650 W-NMP , and maidservants H8198 ?
27 The leprosy H6883 therefore of Naaman H5283 shall cleave H1692 unto thee , and unto thy seed H2233 forever H5769 L-NMS . And he went out H3318 W-VQY3MS from his presence H6440 a leper H6879 as white as snow H7950 .
