Luke 15:1 (NIRV) New International Reader's Version

1 The tax collectors and "sinners" were all gathering around to hear Jesus.
2 But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law were whispering among themselves. They said, "This man welcomes sinners and eats with them."
3 Then Jesus told them a story.
4 He said, "Suppose one of you has 100 sheep and loses one of them. Won't he leave the 99 in the open country? Won't he go and look for the one lost sheep until he finds it?
5 When he finds it, he will joyfully put it on his shoulders
6 and go home. Then he will call his friends and neighbors together. He will say, 'Be joyful with me. I have found my lost sheep.'
7 "I tell you, it will be the same in heaven. There will be great joy when one sinner turns away from sin. Yes, there will be more joy than for 99 godly people who do not need to turn away from their sins.
8 "Or suppose a woman has ten silver coins and loses one. She will light a lamp and sweep the house. She will search carefully until she finds the coin.
9 And when she finds it, she will call her friends and neighbors together. She will say, 'Be joyful with me. I have found my lost coin.'
10 "I tell you, it is the same in heaven. There is joy in heaven over one sinner who turns away from sin."
11 Jesus continued, "There was a man who had two sons.
12 The younger son spoke to his father. He said, 'Father, give me my share of the family property.' So the father divided his property between his two sons.
13 "Not long after that, the younger son packed up all he had. Then he left for a country far away. There he wasted his money on wild living.
14 He spent everything he had. "Then the whole country ran low on food. So the son didn't have what he needed.
15 He went to work for someone who lived in that country, who sent him to the fields to feed the pigs.
16 The son wanted to fill his stomach with the food the pigs were eating. But no one gave him anything.
17 "Then he began to think clearly again. He said, 'How many of my father's hired workers have more than enough food! But here I am dying from hunger!
18 I will get up and go back to my father. I will say to him, "Father, I have sinned against heaven. And I have sinned against you.
19 I am no longer fit to be called your son. Make me like one of your hired workers." '
20 So he got up and went to his father. "While the son was still a long way off, his father saw him. He was filled with tender love for his son. He ran to him. He threw his arms around him and kissed him.
21 "The son said to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer fit to be called your son.'
22 "But the father said to his servants, 'Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet.
23 Bring the fattest calf and kill it. Let's have a big dinner and celebrate.
24 This son of mine was dead. And now he is alive again. He was lost. And now he is found.' "So they began to celebrate.
25 "The older son was in the field. When he came near the house, he heard music and dancing.
26 So he called one of the servants. He asked him what was going on.
27 " 'Your brother has come home,' the servant replied. 'Your father has killed the fattest calf. He has done this because your brother is back safe and sound.'
28 "The older brother became angry. He refused to go in. So his father went out and begged him.
29 "But he answered his father, 'Look! All these years I've worked like a slave for you. I have always obeyed your orders. You never gave me even a young goat so I could celebrate with my friends.
30 But this son of yours wasted your money with some prostitutes. Now he comes home. And for him you kill the fattest calf!'
31 " 'My son,' the father said, 'you are always with me. Everything I have is yours.
32 But we had to celebrate and be glad. This brother of yours was dead. And now he is alive again. He was lost. And now he is found.' "

3 And G1161 CONJ he spake G2036 V-2AAI-3S this G3588 T-ASF parable G3850 N-ASF unto G4314 PREP them G846 P-APM , saying G3004 V-PAP-NSM ,
4 What G5101 I-NSM man G444 N-NSM of G1537 PREP you G5216 P-2GP , having G2192 V-PAP-NSM a hundred G1540 A-NUI sheep G4263 N-APN , if G2532 CONJ he lose G622 V-AAP-NSM one G1520 A-ASN of G1537 PREP them G846 P-GPN , doth not G3756 PRT-N leave G2641 V-PAI-3S the G3588 T-APN ninety and nine G1768 A-NUI in G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DSF wilderness G2048 A-DSF , and G2532 CONJ go G4198 V-PNI-3S after G1909 PREP that which is lost G622 V-2RAP-ASN , until G2193 CONJ he find G2147 V-2AAS-3S it G846 P-ASN ?
5 And G2532 CONJ when he hath found G2147 V-2AAP-NSM it , he layeth G2007 V-PAI-3S it on G1909 PREP his G3588 T-APM shoulders G5606 N-APM , rejoicing G5463 V-PAP-NSM .
6 And G2532 CONJ when he G3588 T-ASM cometh G2064 V-2AAP-NSM home G3624 N-ASM , he calleth together G4779 V-PAI-3S his friends G5384 A-APM and G2532 CONJ neighbors G1069 N-APM , saying G3004 V-PAP-NSM unto them G846 P-DPM , Rejoice with G4796 V-2AOM-2P me G3427 P-1DS ; for G3754 CONJ I have found G2147 V-2AAI-1S my G3588 T-ASN sheep G4263 N-ASN which was lost G622 V-2RAP-ASN .
7 I say G3004 V-PAI-1S unto you G5213 P-2DP , that G3754 CONJ likewise G3779 ADV joy G5479 N-NSF shall be G2071 V-FXI-3S in G1722 PREP heaven G3772 N-DSM over G1909 PREP one G1520 A-DSM sinner G268 A-DSM that repenteth G3340 V-PAP-DSM , more than G2228 PRT over G1909 PREP ninety and nine G1768 A-NUI just persons G1342 A-DPM , which G3748 R-NPM need G2192 V-PAI-3P no G3756 PRT-N repentance G3341 N-GSF .
8 Either G2228 PRT what G5101 I-NSF woman G1135 N-NSF having G2192 V-PAP-NSF ten G1176 A-NUI pieces of silver G1406 N-APF , if G1437 COND she lose G622 V-AAS-3S one G3391 piece G1406 N-ASF , doth not G3780 PRT-I light G681 V-PAI-3S a candle G3088 N-ASF , and G2532 CONJ sweep G4563 V-PAI-3S the G3588 T-ASF house G3614 N-ASF , and G2532 CONJ seek G2212 V-PAI-3S diligently G1960 ADV till G2193 CONJ she find G2147 V-2AAS-3S it ?
9 And G2532 CONJ when she hath found G2147 V-2AAP-NSF it , she calleth her friends and her neighbors together G4779 V-PMI-3S , saying G3004 V-PAP-NSF , Rejoice with G4796 V-2AOM-2P me G3427 P-1DS ; for G3754 CONJ I have found G2147 V-2AAI-1S the G3588 T-ASF piece G1406 N-ASF which G3739 R-ASF I had lost G622 V-AAI-1S .
10 Likewise G3779 ADV , I say G3004 V-PAI-1S unto you G5213 P-2DP , there is G1096 V-PNI-3S joy G5479 N-NSF in the presence G1799 ADV of G3588 T-GPM the G3588 T-GPM angels G32 N-GPM of God G2316 N-GSM over G1909 PREP one G1520 A-DSM sinner G268 A-DSM that repenteth G3340 V-PAP-DSM .
11 And G1161 CONJ he said G2036 V-2AAI-3S , A certain G5100 X-NSM man G444 N-NSM had G2192 V-IAI-3S two G1417 A-NUI sons G5207 N-APM :
12 And G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-NSM younger G3501 A-NSM-C of them G846 P-GPM said G2036 V-2AAI-3S to his father G3962 N-DSM , Father G3962 N-VSM , give G1325 V-2AAM-2S me G3427 P-1DS the G3588 T-DSM portion G3313 N-ASN of G3588 T-ASN goods G3776 N-GSF that falleth G1911 V-PAP-ASN to me . 13 And G2532 CONJ not G3756 PRT-N many G4183 A-APF days G2250 N-APF after G3326 PREP the G3588 T-NSM younger G3501 A-NSM-C son G5207 N-NSM gathered all together G4863 V-2AAP-NSM , and took his journey G589 V-AAI-3S into G1519 PREP a far G3117 A-ASF country G5561 N-ASF , and G2532 CONJ there G1563 ADV wasted G1287 V-AAI-3S his G3588 T-ASF substance G3776 N-ASF with riotous G811 ADV living G2198 V-PAP-NSM .
14 And G1161 CONJ when he G846 P-GSM had spent G1159 V-AAP-GSM all G3956 A-APN , there arose G1096 V-2ADI-3S a mighty G2478 A-NSM famine G3042 N-NSM in G2596 PREP that G3588 T-ASF land G5561 N-ASF ; and G2532 CONJ he G846 P-NSM began G756 V-ADI-3S to be in want G5302 V-PPN .
15 And G2532 CONJ he went G4198 V-AOP-NSM and joined G2853 V-API-3S himself to a G1520 A-DSM citizen G4177 N-GPM of G3588 T-GSF that G3588 T-GSF country G5561 N-GSF ; and G2532 CONJ he sent G3992 V-AAI-3S him G846 P-ASM into G1519 PREP his G3588 T-APM fields G68 N-APM to feed G1006 V-PAN swine G5519 N-APM .
16 And G2532 CONJ he would fain G1937 V-IAI-3S have filled G1072 V-AAN his G3588 T-ASF belly G2836 N-ASF with G575 PREP the G3588 T-GPN husks G2769 N-GPN that G3739 R-GPN the G3588 T-NPM swine G5519 N-NPM did eat G2068 V-IAI-3P : and G2532 CONJ no man G3762 A-NSM gave G1325 V-IAI-3S unto him G846 P-GSM .
17 And G1161 CONJ when he came G2064 V-2AAP-NSM to G1519 PREP himself G1438 F-3ASM , he said G2036 V-2AAI-3S , How many G4214 Q-NPM hired servants G3407 A-NPM of G3588 T-GSM my G3588 T-GSM father G3962 N-GSM \'s have bread enough and to spare G4052 V-PAI-3P , and G1161 CONJ I G1473 P-1NS perish G622 V-PMI-1S with hunger G3042 N-DSM !
18 I will arise G450 V-2AAP-NSM and go G4198 V-FDI-1S to G4314 PREP my G3588 T-ASM father G3962 N-ASM , and G2532 CONJ will say G2046 V-FAI-1S unto him G846 P-DSM , Father G3962 N-VSM , I have sinned G264 V-2AAI-1S against G1519 PREP heaven G3772 N-ASM , and G2532 CONJ before G1799 ADV thee G4675 P-2GS ,
19 And G2532 CONJ am G1510 V-PXI-1S no more G3765 ADV worthy G514 A-NSM to be called G2564 V-APN thy G4675 P-2GS son G5207 N-NSM : make G4160 V-AAM-2S me G3165 P-1AS as G5613 ADV one G1520 A-ASM of G3588 T-GPM thy G3588 T-GPM hired servants G3407 A-GPM .
20 And G2532 CONJ he arose G450 V-2AAP-NSM , and came G2064 V-2AAI-3S to G4314 PREP his G3588 T-ASM father G3962 N-ASM . But G1161 CONJ when he G846 P-GSM was yet a great way off G568 V-PAP-GSM , his G3588 T-NSM father G3962 N-NSM saw G1492 V-2AAI-3S him G846 P-ASM , and G2532 CONJ had compassion G4697 V-AOI-3S , and G2532 CONJ ran G5143 V-2AAP-NSM , and fell G1968 V-2AAI-3S on G1909 PREP his G3588 T-ASM neck G5137 N-ASM , and G2532 CONJ kissed G2705 V-AAI-3S him G846 P-GSM .
21 And G1161 CONJ the G3588 T-NSM son G5207 N-NSM said G2036 V-2AAI-3S unto him G846 P-DSM , Father G3962 N-VSM , I have sinned G264 V-2AAI-1S against G1519 PREP heaven G3772 N-ASM , and G2532 CONJ in thy sight G1799 ADV , and G2532 CONJ am G1510 V-PXI-1S no more G3765 ADV worthy G514 A-NSM to be called G2564 V-APN thy G4675 P-2GS son G5207 N-NSM .
22 But G1161 CONJ the G3588 T-NSM father G3962 N-NSM said G2036 V-2AAI-3S to G4314 PREP his G3588 T-APM servants G1401 N-APM , Bring forth G1627 V-AAM-2P the G3588 T-ASF best G4413 A-ASF robe G4749 N-ASF , and G2532 CONJ put it on G1746 V-AAM-2P him G846 P-GSM ; and G2532 CONJ put G1325 V-2AAM-2P a ring G1146 N-ASM on G1519 PREP his G3588 T-ASF hand G5495 N-ASF , and G2532 CONJ shoes G5266 N-APN on G1519 PREP his feet G4228 N-APM :

24 For G3754 CONJ this G3778 D-NSM my G3588 T-NSM son G5207 N-NSM was G2258 V-IXI-3S dead G3498 A-NSM , and G2532 CONJ is alive again G326 V-AAI-3S ; he was G2258 V-IXI-3S lost G622 V-2RAP-NSM , and G2532 CONJ is found G2147 V-API-3S . And G2532 CONJ they began G756 V-ADI-3P to be merry G2165 V-PPN .
25 Now G1161 CONJ his G3588 T-NSM elder G4245 A-NSM son G5207 N-NSM was G2258 V-IXI-3S in G1722 PREP the field G68 N-DSM : and G2532 CONJ as G5613 ADV he came G2064 V-PNP-NSM and drew nigh G1448 V-AAI-3S to the G3588 T-DSF house G3614 N-DSF , he heard G191 V-AAI-3S music G4858 N-GSF and G2532 CONJ dancing G5525 N-GPM .
26 And G2532 CONJ he called G4341 V-ADP-NSM one G1520 A-ASM of G3588 T-GPM the G3588 T-GPM servants G3816 N-GPM , and G2532 CONJ asked G4441 V-INI-3S what G5101 I-NSN these things G5023 D-NPN meant G1498 V-PXO-3S .
27 And G1161 CONJ he G3588 T-NSM said G2036 V-2AAI-3S unto him G846 P-DSM , Thy G3588 T-NSM brother G80 N-NSM is come G2240 V-PAI-3S ; and G2532 CONJ thy G3588 T-NSM father G3962 N-NSM hath killed G2380 V-AAI-3S the G3588 T-ASM fatted G4618 A-ASM calf G3448 A-ASM , because G3754 CONJ he hath received G618 V-2AAI-3S him G846 P-ASM safe and sound G5198 V-PAP-ASM .
28 And G1161 CONJ he was angry G3710 V-API-3S , and G2532 CONJ would G2309 V-IAI-3S not G3756 PRT-N go in G1525 V-2AAN : therefore G3767 CONJ came his father out G1831 V-2AAP-NSM , and G2532 CONJ entreated G3870 V-IAI-3S him G846 P-GSM .

30 But G1161 CONJ as soon as G3753 ADV this G3778 D-NSM thy G3588 T-NSM son G5207 N-NSM was come G2064 V-2AAI-3S , which G3588 T-ASM hath devoured G2719 V-2AAP-NSM thy living G979 N-ASM with G3326 PREP harlots G4204 N-GPF , thou hast killed G2380 V-AAI-2S for him G846 P-DSM the G3588 T-ASM fatted G4618 A-ASM calf G3448 A-ASM .
31 And G1161 CONJ he G3588 T-NSM said G2036 V-2AAI-3S unto him G846 P-DSM , Son G5043 N-VSN , thou G4771 P-2NS art G1488 V-PXI-2S ever G3842 ADV with G3326 PREP me G1700 P-1GS , and G2532 CONJ all G3956 A-NPN that I have G1699 S-1NPN is G2076 V-PXI-3S thine G4674 S-2NPN .
32 It G1161 CONJ was meet G1163 V-IQI-3S that we should make merry G2165 V-APN , and G2532 CONJ be glad G5463 V-2AON : for G3754 CONJ this G3778 D-NSM thy G3588 T-NSM brother G80 N-NSM was G2258 V-IXI-3S dead G3498 A-NSM , and G2532 CONJ is alive again G326 V-AAI-3S ; and G2532 CONJ was G2258 V-IXI-3S lost G622 V-2RAP-NSM , and G2532 CONJ is found G2147 V-API-3S .
