Jeremiah 41:1 (NIRV) New International Reader's Version

1 In the seventh month Ishmael, the son of Nethaniah, came with ten men to Gedaliah, the son of Ahikam, at Mizpah. Nethaniah was the son of Elishama. Ishmael was a member of the royal family. He had been one of the king's officers. Ishmael and his ten men were eating together at Mizpah.
2 They got up and struck down Gedaliah, the son of Ahikam, with their swords. They killed him even though the king of Babylonia had appointed him as governor over Judah. Ahikam was the son of Shaphan.
3 Ishmael also killed all of the Jews who were with Gedaliah at Mizpah. And he killed the Babylonian soldiers who were there.
4 On the next day, people still hadn't found out that Gedaliah had been murdered.
5 On that day 80 men came from Shechem, Shiloh and Samaria. They had shaved off their beards. They had torn their clothes. And they had cut themselves. They brought grain offerings and incense with them. They took them to the Lord's house.
6 Ishmael, the son of Nethaniah, went out from Mizpah to meet them. He was sobbing as he went. When he met them, he said, "Come to Gedaliah, the son of Ahikam."
7 They went with him into the city. Then Ishmael, the son of Nethaniah, and the men who were with him killed them. And they threw them into an empty well.
8 But ten of the men had spoken to Ishmael. They had said, "Don't kill us! We have some wheat and barley. We also have olive oil and honey. We've hidden all of it in a field." So he let them alone. He didn't kill them along with the others.
9 But he had thrown all of the bodies of the men he had killed into the empty well. That included Gedaliah's body. The well was the one King Asa had made. He had made it when he strengthened Mizpah against attack by Baasha, the king of Israel. Ishmael, the son of Nethaniah, filled it with the bodies of those he had killed.
10 Ishmael made prisoners of all the rest of the people who were in Mizpah. That included women who were members of the royal court. It also included all of the others who were left there. Nebuzaradan had appointed Gedaliah, the son of Ahikam, over them. Ishmael, the son of Nethaniah, took them as prisoners. Then he started out to go across the Jordan River to the land of Ammon. Nebuzaradan was the commander of the royal guard.
11 Johanan, the son of Kareah, and all of the other army officers who were with him were told what had happened. They heard about all of the crimes Ishmael, the son of Nethaniah, had committed.
12 So they brought all of their men together. Then they went to fight against Ishmael, the son of Nethaniah. They caught up with him near the large pool in Gibeon.
13 Ishmael had many people with him. They saw Johanan, the son of Kareah. And they saw the other army officers who were with him. So the people who had been forced to go with Ishmael were glad.
14 All those whom Ishmael had taken as prisoners at Mizpah turned and went over to the side of Johanan, the son of Kareah.
15 But Ishmael, the son of Nethaniah, and eight of his men escaped from Johanan. They ran away to the land of Ammon.
16 Then Johanan, the son of Kareah, led away all of the people from Mizpah who were still alive. All of the other army officers who were with Johanan helped him do it. He had taken them away from Ishmael, the son of Nethaniah. That happened after Ishmael had murdered Gedaliah, the son of Ahikam. The people Johanan had taken away included the soldiers, women, children and court officials he had brought from Gibeon.
17 They went on their way. They stopped at Geruth Kimham near Bethlehem. They were going to Egypt.
18 They wanted to get away from the Babylonians. They were afraid of them because Ishmael, the son of Nethaniah, had killed Gedaliah, the son of Ahikam. The king of Babylonia had appointed Gedaliah as governor over Judah.
1 Now it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS in the seventh H7637 D-ONUM month H2320 BD-NMS , that Ishmael H3458 the son H1121 CMS of Nethaniah H5418 the son H1121 CMS of Elishama H476 , of the seed H2233 royal H4410 , and the princes H7227 of the king H4428 D-NMS , even ten H6235 men H376 NMP with H854 PREP-3MS him , came H935 VQPMS unto H413 PREP Gedaliah H1436 the son H1121 CMS of Ahikam H296 to Mizpah H4708 ; and there H8033 ADV they did eat H398 W-VQY3MP bread H3899 NMS together H3162 ADV-3MS in Mizpah H4709 .
2 Then arose H6965 W-VQY3MS Ishmael H3458 the son H1121 CMS of Nethaniah H5418 , and the ten H6235 men H376 D-NMP that H834 RPRO were H1961 VQQ3MP with H854 PREP-3MS him , and smote H5221 W-VHY3MP Gedaliah H1436 the son H1121 CMS of Ahikam H296 the son H1121 CMS of Shaphan H8227 with the sword H2719 , and slew H4191 him , whom H834 RPRO the king H4428 NMS of Babylon H894 LFS had made governor H6485 over the land H776 B-GFS .
3 Ishmael H3458 also slew H5221 all H3605 NMS the Jews H3064 that H834 RPRO were H1961 VQQ3MP with H854 PREP-3MS him , even with H854 PREP Gedaliah H1436 , at Mizpah H4709 , and the Chaldeans H3778 that H834 RPRO were found H4672 there H8033 ADV , and the men H376 of war H4421 .
4 And it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS the second H8145 D-ONUM day H3117 B-AMS after he had slain H4191 Gedaliah H1436 , and no H3808 NADV man H376 W-NMS knew H3045 it ,
5 That there came H935 W-VQY3MP certain H376 NMS from Shechem H7927 , from Shiloh H7887 , and from Samaria H8111 , even fourscore H8084 men H376 NMS , having their beards H2206 shaven H1548 , and their clothes H899 rent H7167 , and having cut themselves H1413 , with offerings H4503 and incense H3828 in their hand H3027 , to bring H935 L-VHFC them to the house H1004 CMS of the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS .
6 And Ishmael H3458 the son H1121 CMS of Nethaniah H5418 went forth H3318 W-VQY3MS from H4480 PREP Mizpah H4709 to meet H7125 them , weeping H1058 all along as he went H1980 : and it came to pass H1961 W-VPY3MS , as he met H6298 them , he said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP them , Come H935 to H413 PREP Gedaliah H1436 the son H1121 CMS of Ahikam H296 .
7 And it was H1961 W-VQY3MS so , when they came H935 into H413 PREP the midst H8432 of the city H5892 D-GFS , that Ishmael H3458 the son H1121 of Nethaniah H5418 slew H7819 them , and cast them into H413 PREP the midst H8432 of the pit H953 , he H1931 PPRO-3MS , and the men H376 that H834 RPRO were with H854 PREP-3MS him .
8 But ten H6235 men H376 NMP were found H4672 among them that said H559 W-VQY3MP unto H413 PREP Ishmael H3458 , Slay H4191 us not H408 NPAR : for H3588 CONJ we have H3426 ADV treasures H4301 in the field H7704 B-NMS , of wheat H2406 , and of barley H8184 , and of oil H8081 , and of honey H1706 . So he forbear H2308 , and slew H4191 them not H3808 W-NPAR among H8432 B-NMS their brethren H251 CMP-3MP .
9 Now the pit H953 wherein H834 RPRO Ishmael H3458 had cast H7993 all H3605 NMS the dead bodies H6297 of the men H376 D-NMP , whom H834 RPRO he had slain H5221 because H3027 B-CFS of Gedaliah H1436 , was it H1931 PPRO-3MS which H834 RPRO Asa H609 the king H4428 NMS had made H6213 VQQ3MS for fear H6440 M-CMP of Baasha H1201 king H4428 NMS of Israel H3478 : and Ishmael H3458 the son H1121 of Nethaniah H5418 filled H4390 VPQ3MS it with them that were slain H2491 .
10 Then Ishmael H3458 carried away captive H7617 all H3605 NMS the residue H7611 of the people H5971 that H834 RPRO were in Mizpah H4709 , even the king H4428 D-NMS \'s daughters H1323 CFP , and all H3605 NMS the people H5971 that remained H7604 in Mizpah H4709 , whom H834 RPRO Nebuzaradan H5018 the captain H7227 AMS of the guard H2876 had committed H6485 to Gedaliah H1436 the son H1121 of Ahikam H296 : and Ishmael H3458 the son H1121 of Nethaniah H5418 carried them away captive H7617 , and departed H1980 W-VQY3MS to go over H5674 to H413 PREP the Ammonites H1121 .
11 But when Johanan H3110 the son H1121 of Kareah H7143 , and all H3605 NMS the captains H8269 CMP of the forces H2428 that H834 RPRO were with H854 PREP-3MS him , heard H8085 of all H3605 NMS the evil H7451 D-AFS that H834 RPRO Ishmael H3458 the son H1121 of Nethaniah H5418 had done H6213 VQQ3MS ,
12 Then they took H3947 W-VQY3MP all H3605 NMS the men H376 D-NMP , and went H1980 W-VQY3MP to fight H3898 with H5973 PREP Ishmael H3458 the son H1121 of Nethaniah H5418 , and found H4672 him by H413 PREP the great H7227 AMP waters H4325 OMD that H834 RPRO are in Gibeon H1391 .
13 Now it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS , that when all H3605 NMS the people H5971 which H834 RPRO were with H854 PREP Ishmael H3458 saw H7200 K-VQFC Johanan H3110 the son H1121 of Kareah H7143 , and all H3605 NMS the captains H8269 CMP of the forces H2428 that H834 RPRO were with H854 PREP-3MS him , then they were glad H8055 .
14 So all H3605 NMS the people H5971 that H834 RPRO Ishmael H3458 had carried away captive H7617 from H4480 PREP Mizpah H4709 cast about H5437 and returned H7725 W-VUY3MP , and went H1980 W-VQY3MP unto H413 PREP Johanan H3110 the son H1121 of Kareah H7143 .
15 But Ishmael H3458 the son H1121 of Nethaniah H5418 escaped H4422 from M-CMP Johanan H3110 with eight H8083 men H376 NMP , and went H1980 W-VQY3MS to H413 PREP the Ammonites H1121 .
16 Then took H3947 W-VQY3MS Johanan H3110 the son H1121 of Kareah H7143 , and all H3605 NMS the captains H8269 CMP of the forces H2428 that H834 RPRO were with H854 PREP-3MS him , all H3605 NMS the remnant H7611 of the people H5971 whom H834 RPRO he had recovered H7725 VHQ3MS from PREP-3MS Ishmael H3458 the son H1121 of Nethaniah H5418 , from H4480 PREP Mizpah H4709 , after H310 ADV that he had slain H5221 Gedaliah H1436 the son H1121 of Ahikam H296 , even mighty H1397 men H376 CMP of war H4421 , and the women H802 , and the children H2945 , and the eunuchs H5631 , whom H834 RPRO he had brought again H7725 VHQ3MS from Gibeon H1391 :
17 And they departed H1980 W-VQY3MP , and dwelt H3427 in the habitation H1628 of Chimham H3643 , which H834 RPRO is by H681 Bethlehem H1035 , to go H1980 L-VQFC to enter into H935 L-VQFC Egypt H4714 ,
18 Because H6440 M-CMP of the Chaldeans H3778 : for H3588 CONJ they were afraid H3372 of M-CMP-3MP them , because H3588 CONJ Ishmael H3458 the son H1121 of Nethaniah H5418 had slain H5221 Gedaliah H1436 the son H1121 of Ahikam H296 , whom H834 RPRO the king H4428 NMS of Babylon H894 LFS made governor H6485 in the land H776 B-GFS .
