Isaiah 9:1 (NIRV) New International Reader's Version

1 But there won't be any more sadness for those who were suffering. In the past the Lord brought shame on the land of Zebulun. He also brought shame on the land of Naphtali. But in days to come he will honor Galilee, where people from other nations live. He will honor the land along the Mediterranean Sea. And he will honor the territory east of the Jordan River.
2 The people who are now living in darkness will see a great light. They are now living in a very dark land. But a light will shine on them.
3 Lord, you will make our nation larger. You will increase their joy. They will show you how glad they are. They will be as glad as people are at harvest time. They will be as glad as soldiers are when they share the things they've taken after a battle.
4 You set Israel free from Midian long ago. In the same way, you will break the heavy yoke that weighs Israel down. You will break the wooden beams that are on their shoulders. You will break the rods of those who strike them down.
5 Every fighting man's boot that is used in battle will be burned up. So will every piece of clothes that is covered with blood. All of them will be thrown into the fire.
6 A child will be born to us. A son will be given to us. He will rule over us. And he will be called Wonderful Adviser and Mighty God. He will also be called Father Who Lives Forever and Prince Who Brings Peace.
7 The authority of his rule will continue to grow. The peace he brings will never end. He will rule on David's throne and over his kingdom. He will make the kingdom strong and secure. His rule will be based on what is fair and right. It will last forever. The Lord's great love will make sure that happens. He rules over all.
8 The Lord has sent a message against Jacob's people. He will punish Israel.
9 All of the people will know about it. Ephraim's people and those who live in Samaria will know about it. Their hearts are very proud. They say,
10 "The brick buildings have fallen down. But we will rebuild them with blocks of stone. The fig trees have been chopped down. But we'll plant cedar trees in place of them."
11 In spite of that, the Lord has made Rezin's enemies stronger. He has stirred up Assyria to fight against Israel.
12 Arameans from the east have opened their mouths and swallowed Israel up. So have Philistines from the west. Even then, the Lord is still angry. His hand is still raised against them.
13 But his people have not returned to the One who struck them down. They haven't turned for help to the Lord who rules over all.
14 So he will cut off from Israel heads and tails alike. In a single day he will cut off palm branches and tall grass alike. The palm branches are the people who rule over others. The tall grass is the people who bow down to them.
15 The elders and important leaders are the heads. The prophets who teach lies are the tails.
16 Those who guide the people of Israel are leading them down the wrong path. So those who follow them aren't on the right road.
17 The Lord will not be pleased with the young men. He won't take pity on widows and on children whose fathers have died. All of them are ungodly and evil. They say sinful things with their mouths. Even then, the Lord is still angry. His hand is still raised against them.
18 What is evil burns like a fire. It burns up bushes and thorns. It sets the forest on fire. It sends up a huge column of smoke.
19 The Lord rules over all. When he gets angry, he will burn up the land. The people will die. Men will eat their brothers.
20 People will eat up everything they can find on their right. But they'll still be hungry. They will eat everything they can find on their left. But they won't be satisfied. So they will eat the dead bodies of their children.
21 That's what Manasseh's people will do to Ephraim. And that's what Ephraim's people will do to Manasseh. Together they will turn against Judah. Even then, the Lord is still angry. His hand is still raised against them.

2 The people H5971 that walked H1980 in darkness H2822 BD-NMS have seen H7200 VQQ3MP a great H1419 AMS light H216 NMS : they that dwell H3427 in the land H776 B-GFS of the shadow of death H6757 NMS , upon H5921 PREP-3MP them hath the light H216 NMS shined H5050 .
3 Thou hast multiplied H7235 the nation H1471 , and not H3808 NPAR increased H1431 the joy H8057 : they joy H8055 before H6440 L-CMP-2MS thee according to the joy H8057 in harvest H7105 , and as H834 K-RPRO men rejoice H1523 when they divide H2505 the spoil H7998 NMS .
4 For H3588 CONJ thou hast broken H2865 the yoke H5923 of his burden H5448 , and the staff H4294 of his shoulder H7926 , the rod H7626 CMS of his oppressor H5065 , as in the day H3117 of Midian H4080 .
5 For H3588 CONJ every H3605 CMS battle H5430 of the warrior H5431 is with confused noise H7494 B-NMS , and garments H8071 rolled H1556 in blood H1818 ; but this shall be H1961 W-VQQ3FS with burning H8316 L-NFS and fuel H3980 of fire H784 NMS .
6 For H3588 CONJ unto us a child H3206 is born H3205 VWQ3MS , unto us a son H1121 NMS is given H5414 : and the government H4951 shall be upon H5921 PREP his shoulder H7926 : and his name H8034 CMS-3MS shall be H1961 W-VQY3FS called H7121 W-VQY3MS Wonderful H6382 , Counselor H3289 , The mighty H1368 AMS God H410 EDS , The everlasting H5703 Father H1 , The Prince H8269 of Peace H7965 .
7 Of the increase H4766 of his government H4951 and peace H7965 there shall be no H369 ADV end H7093 RMS , upon H5921 PREP the throne H3678 of David H1732 , and upon H5921 PREP his kingdom H4467 CFS-3MS , to order H3559 it , and to establish H5582 it with judgment H4941 and with justice H6666 from henceforth H6258 even forever H5704 W-PREP . 8 The Lord H136 EDS sent H7971 VQQ3MS a word H1697 VQPMS into Jacob H3290 , and it hath lighted H5307 upon Israel H3478 .
9 And all H3605 CMS-3MS the people H5971 shall know H3045 , even Ephraim H669 and the inhabitant H3427 of Samaria H8111 , that say H559 L-VQFC in the pride H1346 and stoutness H1433 of heart H3824 NMS ,
10 The bricks H3843 NMP are fallen down H5307 , but we will build H1129 VQI1MS with hewn stones H1496 : the sycamores H8256 are cut down H1438 , but we will change H2498 them into cedars H730 .
11 Therefore the LORD H3068 EDS shall set up H7682 the adversaries H6862 of Rezin H7526 against H5921 PREP-3MS him , and join his enemies together H5526 ;
12 The Syrians H758 EMS before H6924 M-NMS , and the Philistines H6430 behind H268 ; and they shall devour H398 W-VQY3MP Israel H3478 with open H3605 B-CMS mouth H6310 . For all H3605 B-CMS this H2063 DPRO his anger H639 CMS-3MS is not H3808 NADV turned away H7725 VQQ3MS , but his hand H3027 CFS-3MS is stretched out H5186 still H5750 W-ADV .
13 For the people H5971 turneth H7725 VQQ3MS not H3808 NADV unto H5704 PREP him that smiteth H5221 them , neither H3808 NADV do they seek H1875 the LORD H3068 EDS of hosts H6635 .
14 Therefore the LORD H3068 EDS will cut off H3772 from Israel H3478 head H7218 NMS and tail H2180 , branch H3712 and rush H100 , in one H259 ONUM day H3117 NMS .
15 The ancient H2205 PFS and honorable H5375 W-VWCMS , he H1931 PPRO-3MS is the head H7218 ; and the prophet H5030 that teacheth H3384 lies H8267 , he H1931 PPRO-3MS is the tail H2180 .
16 For the leaders H833 of this H2088 D-PMS people H5971 cause them to err H8582 ; and they that are led H833 of them are destroyed H1104 .
17 Therefore H5921 PREP the Lord H136 EDS shall have no H3808 ADV joy H8055 in H5921 PREP their young men H970 , neither H3808 NADV shall have mercy H7355 on their fatherless H3490 and widows H490 : for H3588 CONJ every one H3605 is a hypocrite H2611 NMS and an evildoer H7489 , and every H3605 W-CMS mouth H6310 speaketh H1696 VQPMS folly H5039 NFS . For all H3605 B-CMS this H2063 DPRO his anger H639 CMS-3MS is not H3808 NADV turned away H7725 VQQ3MS , but his hand H3027 CFS-3MS is stretched out H5186 still H5750 W-ADV .
18 For H3588 CONJ wickedness H7564 burneth H1197 as the fire H784 : it shall devour H398 VQY3FS the briers H8068 and thorns H7898 , and shall kindle H3341 in the thickets H5442 of the forest H3293 , and they shall mount up H55 like the lifting up H1348 of smoke H6227 .
19 Through the wrath H5678 of the LORD H3068 EDS of hosts H6635 is the land H776 NFS darkened H6272 , and the people H5971 shall be H1961 W-VQY3MS as the fuel H3980 of the fire H784 CMS : no H3808 NADV man H376 NMS shall spare H2550 his brother H251 CMS-3MS .
20 And he shall snatch H1504 on H5921 PREP the right hand H3225 NFS , and be hungry H7456 ; and he shall eat H398 on H5921 PREP the left hand H8040 NMS , and they shall not H3808 W-NPAR be satisfied H7646 : they shall eat H398 every man H376 NMS the flesh H1320 CMS of his own arm H2220 :
21 Manasseh H4519 , Ephraim H669 ; and Ephraim H669 , Manasseh H4519 : and they H1992 PPRO-3MP together H3162 ADV-3MS shall be against H5921 PREP Judah H3063 . For all H3605 B-CMS this H2063 DPRO his anger H639 CMS-3MS is not H3808 NADV turned away H7725 VQQ3MS , but his hand H3027 CFS-3MS is stretched out H5186 still H5750 W-ADV .
