Judges 21:1 (NIRV) New International Reader's Version

1 The men of Israel had taken an oath and made a promise at Mizpah. They had said, "Not one of us will give his daughter to be married to a man from Benjamin."
2 The people went to Bethel. They sat there until evening in the sight of God. They sobbed loudly and bitterly.
3 "Lord, you are the God of Israel," they cried. "Why has this happened to Israel? Why is one tribe missing from Israel today?"
4 Early the next day the people built an altar. They brought burnt offerings and friendship offerings.
5 Then the people of Israel asked, "Has anyone failed to come here in the sight of the Lord? Is anyone missing from all of the tribes of Israel?" The people had made a promise with an oath. They had said that anyone who failed to come to Mizpah in the sight of the Lord should certainly be put to death.
6 The people of Israel were very sad because of what had happened to the tribe of Benjamin. After all, they were their fellow Israelites. "Today one tribe has been cut off from Israel," they said.
7 "How can we provide wives for the men who are left? We've made a promise with an oath in the sight of the Lord. We've promised not to give any of our daughters to be married to them."
8 Then they asked, "Has any tribe of Israel failed to come here to Mizpah in the sight of the Lord?" They discovered that no one from Jabesh Gilead had come. No one from there had gathered together with the others in the camp.
9 They counted the people. They found that none of the people of Jabesh Gilead had come to Mizpah.
10 So the community sent 12,000 fighting men to Jabesh Gilead. They directed them to take their swords and kill those who were living there. That included the women and children.
11 "Here is what you must do," they said. "Kill every male. Also kill every woman who is not a virgin."
12 They found 400 young women in Jabesh Gilead who had never made love to a man. So they took them to the camp at Shiloh in Canaan.
13 Then the whole community sent an offer of peace to the men of Benjamin. The men were at the rock of Rimmon.
14 So the men of Benjamin returned at that time. They were given the women of Jabesh Gilead who had been spared. But there weren't enough women for all of them.
15 The people were very sad because of what had happened to the tribe of Benjamin. The Lord had left a gap in the tribes of Israel. They weren't complete without Benjamin.
16 The elders of the community spoke up. They said, "All of the women of Benjamin have been wiped out. So how will we find wives for the men who are left?
17 The men of Benjamin who are still alive need to have children," they said. "If they don't, a tribe of Israel will be wiped out.
18 "But we can't give them our daughters to be their wives. We Israelites have taken an oath and made a promise. We've said, 'May anyone who gives a wife to a man from Benjamin be under the Lord's curse.'
19 "Look, a feast is celebrated every year in Shiloh in honor of the Lord. Shiloh is north of Bethel. It's east of the road that goes from Bethel to Shechem. It's south of Lebonah."
20 So they told the men of Benjamin what to do. They said, "Go. Hide in the vineyards
21 and watch. The young women of Shiloh will come out. They'll join in the dancing. When they do, run out of the vineyards. Each of you grab hold of a young woman from Shiloh to be your wife. Then go to the land of Benjamin.
22 "Their fathers or brothers might not be happy with what we're doing. If they aren't, we'll say to them, 'Do us a favor. Help the men of Benjamin. We didn't get wives for them during the battle. You aren't guilty of doing anything wrong. After all, you didn't give your daughters to them. They were stolen from you.' "
23 So that's what the men of Benjamin did. While the young women were dancing, each man caught one. He carried her away to be his wife. Then the men returned to their own share of land. They built the towns again. They settled down in them.
24 At that time the men of Israel also left. They went home to their tribes and family groups. Each one went to his own share of land.
25 In those days Israel didn't have a king. The people did anything they thought was right.
1 Now the men H376 NMS of Israel H3478 had sworn H7650 in Mizpeh H4709 , saying H559 L-VQFC , There shall not H3808 NADV any H376 NMS of H4480 M-PREP-3MS us give H5414 VHFA his daughter H1323 unto Benjamin H1144 to wife H802 .
2 And the people H5971 came H935 W-VQY3MS to the house of God H1008 LFS , and abode H3427 W-VQY3MP there H8033 ADV till H5704 PREP even H6153 before H6440 L-CMP God H430 D-EDP , and lifted up H5375 W-VQY3MP their voices H6963 CMS-3MP , and wept H1058 W-VQY3MP sore H1065 ;
3 And said H559 W-VQY3MP , O LORD H3068 EDS God H430 CDP of Israel H3478 , why H4100 L-IGAT is this H2063 DPRO-3FS come to pass H1961 VQQ3FS in Israel H3478 , that there should be today H3117 D-AMS one H259 ONUM tribe H7626 CMS lacking H6485 in Israel H3478 ?
4 And it came to pass H1961 W-VPY3MS on the morrow H4283 , that the people H5971 rose early H7925 , and built H1129 there H8033 ADV an altar H4196 NMS , and offered H5927 burnt offerings H5930 CFP and peace offerings H8002 .
5 And the children H1121 of Israel H3478 said H559 , Who H4310 IPRO is there among all H3605 M-CMS the tribes H7626 of Israel H3478 that H834 RPRO came not up H5927 with the congregation H6951 BD-NMS unto H413 PREP the LORD H3068 EDS ? For H3588 CONJ they had made H1961 VQQ3FS a great H1419 D-AFS oath H7621 concerning H834 RPRO him that came not up H5927 to H413 PREP the LORD H3068 EDS to Mizpeh H4709 , saying H559 L-VQFC , He shall surely be put to death H4191 VQFA .
6 And the children H1121 of Israel H3478 repented H5162 them for H413 PREP Benjamin H1144 their brother H251 CMS-3MS , and said H559 W-VQY3MP , There is one H259 MMS tribe H7626 CMS cut off H1438 from Israel H3478 this day H3117 D-AMS .
7 How H4100 IPRO shall we do H6213 VQY1MP for wives H802 for them that remain H3498 , seeing we H587 have sworn H7650 by the LORD H3068 that we will not H1115 L-NPAR give H5414 VQFC them of our daughters H1323 to wives H802 ?
8 And they said H559 W-VQY3MP , What H4310 IPRO one H259 MMS is there of the tribes H7626 of Israel H3478 that H834 RPRO came not up H5927 to Mizpeh H4709 to H413 PREP the LORD H3068 EDS ? And , behold H2009 IJEC , there came H935 none H3808 ADV to H413 PREP the camp H4264 from Jabesh H3003 - gilead to H413 PREP the assembly H6951 .
9 For the people H5971 were numbered H6485 , and , behold H2009 IJEC , there were none H369 ADV of the inhabitants H3427 of Jabesh H3003 - gilead there H8033 ADV .
10 And the congregation H5712 sent H7971 hither H8033 ADV twelve H8147 thousand H505 W-BMS men H376 NMS of the most valiant H1121 , and commanded H6680 them , saying H559 L-VQFC , Go H1980 VQI2MP and smite H5221 the inhabitants H3427 of Jabesh H3003 - gilead with the edge H6310 L-CMS of the sword H2719 GFS , with the women H802 and the children H2945 .
11 And this H2088 W-PMS is the thing H1697 D-NMS that H834 RPRO ye shall do H6213 , Ye shall utterly destroy H2763 every H3605 NMS male H2145 NMS , and every H3605 NMS woman H802 NFS that hath lain H3045 by man H2145 NMS .
12 And they found H4672 among the inhabitants H3427 of Jabesh H3003 - gilead four H702 MFS hundred H3967 BFP young H5291 virgins H1330 , that H834 RPRO had known H3045 no H3808 ADV man H376 NMS by lying H4904 with any male H2145 NMS : and they brought H935 them unto H413 PREP the camp H4264 to Shiloh H7887 , which H834 RPRO is in the land H776 B-GFS of Canaan H3667 LMS .
13 And the whole H3605 NMS congregation H5712 sent H7971 some to speak H1696 to H413 PREP the children H1121 of Benjamin H1144 that H834 RPRO were in the rock H5553 Rimmon H7417 , and to call H7121 W-VQY3MP peaceably H7965 unto them .
14 And Benjamin H1144 came again H7725 at that H1931 time H6256 ; and they gave H5414 W-VQY3MP them wives H802 D-NFP which H834 RPRO they had saved alive H2421 of the women H802 of Jabesh H3003 - gilead : and yet so H3651 ADV they sufficed H4672 VQQ3MP them not H3808 W-NPAR .
15 And the people H5971 repented them H5162 for Benjamin H1144 , because H3588 CONJ that the LORD H3068 EDS had made H6213 VQQ3MS a breach H6556 in the tribes H7626 of Israel H3478 LMS .
16 Then the elders H2205 of the congregation H5712 said H559 , How H4100 IPRO shall we do H6213 VQY1MP for wives H802 for them that remain H3498 , seeing H3588 CONJ the women H802 NFS are destroyed H8045 out of Benjamin H1144 ?
17 And they said H559 W-VQY3MP , There must be an inheritance H3425 for them that be escaped H6413 of Benjamin H1144 , that a tribe H7626 CMS be not H3808 W-NPAR destroyed H4229 out of Israel H3478 .
18 Howbeit we H587 may H3201 not H3808 NADV give H5414 L-VQFC them wives H802 GFP of our daughters H1323 : for H3588 CONJ the children H1121 of Israel H3478 have sworn H7650 , saying H559 L-VQFC , Cursed H779 VWQ3MS be he that giveth H5414 VQPMS a wife H802 NFS to Benjamin H1144 .
19 Then they said H559 W-VQY3MP , Behold H2009 IJEC , there is a feast H2282 of the LORD H3068 EDS in Shiloh H7887 yearly H3117 in a place which H834 RPRO is on the north side H6828 of Bethel H1008 LFS , on the east side H4217 of the highway H4546 that goeth up H5927 from Bethel H1008 LFS to Shechem H7927 , and on the south H5045 of Lebonah H3829 .
20 Therefore they commanded H6680 the children H1121 of Benjamin H1144 , saying H559 L-VQFC , Go H1980 VQI2MP and lie in wait H693 in the vineyards H3754 ;
21 And see H7200 , and , behold H2009 IJEC , if H518 PART the daughters H1323 of Shiloh H7887 come out H3318 to dance H2342 in dances H4246 , then come ye out H3318 of H4480 PREP the vineyards H3754 , and catch H2414 you every man H376 NMS his wife H802 CFS-3MS of the daughters H1323 of Shiloh H7887 , and go H1980 to the land H776 GFS of Benjamin H1144 .
22 And it shall be H1961 W-VQQ3MS , when H3588 CONJ their fathers H1 CMP-3MP or H176 CONJ their brethren H251 come H935 VQY3MP unto H413 us to complain H7378 , that we will say H559 unto H413 PREP-3MP them , Be favorable H2603 unto them for our sakes : because H3588 CONJ we reserved H3947 not H3808 NADV to each man H376 NMS his wife H802 CFS-3MS in the war H4421 : for H3588 CONJ ye H859 PPRO-2MS did not H3808 NADV give H5414 unto them at this time H6256 KD-NMS , that ye should be guilty H816 .
23 And the children H1121 of Benjamin H1144 did H6213 so H3651 ADV , and took H5375 W-VQY3MP them wives H802 GFP , according to their number H4557 , of H4480 PREP them that danced H2342 , whom H834 RPRO they caught H1497 : and they went H1980 W-VQY3MP and returned H7725 unto H413 PREP their inheritance H5159 , and repaired H1129 the cities H5892 , and dwelt H3427 W-VQY3MP in them .
24 And the children H1121 of Israel H3478 departed H1980 thence H8033 M-ADV at that H1931 time H6256 , every man H376 NMS to his tribe H7626 and to his family H4940 , and they went out H3318 W-VQY3MP from thence H8033 M-ADV every man H376 NMS to his inheritance H5159 .
25 In those H1992 D-PPRO-3MP days H3117 BD-NMP there was no H369 NPAR king H4428 NMS in Israel H3478 : every man H376 NMS did H6213 VQY3MS that which was right H3477 in his own eyes H5869 B-CMD-3MS .
