2 Kings 3:1 (NIRV) New International Reader's Version

1 Joram became king of Israel in Samaria. It was in the 18th year that Jehoshaphat was king of Judah. Joram ruled for 12 years. He was the son of Ahab.
2 Joram did what was evil in the sight of the Lord. But he wasn't as bad as his father and mother had been. His father had made a sacred stone that was used to worship the god Baal. Joram got rid of it.
3 But he kept on committing the sins of Jeroboam, the son of Nebat. Jeroboam had also caused Israel to commit those same sins. Joram didn't turn away from them.
4 Mesha raised sheep. He was king of Moab. He had to supply the king of Israel with 100,000 lambs a year. He also had to supply him with the wool of 100,000 rams a year.
5 Ahab died. Moab's king refused to obey the next king of Israel.
6 So at that time King Joram started out from Samaria. He gathered all of Israel's troops together.
7 He also sent a message to Jehoshaphat, the king of Judah. It said, "The king of Moab is refusing to obey me. Will you go with me to fight against Moab?" "Yes. I'll go with you," he replied. "My men will go with you. My horses will also go with you."
8 "What road should we take to attack Moab?" Joram asked. "The one that goes through the Desert of Edom," Jehoshaphat answered.
9 So the king of Israel started out. The king of Judah and the king of Edom went with him. Their armies marched around the southern end of the Dead Sea. After seven days they ran out of water. There wasn't any water for the men or their animals.
10 "What should we do now?" exclaimed the king of Israel. "The Lord has called us three kings together. Did he do it only to hand us over to Moab?"
11 But Jehoshaphat asked, "Isn't there a prophet of the Lord here? Can't we ask the Lord for advice through him?" An officer of the king of Israel spoke up. He answered, "Elisha is here. He's the son of Shaphat. Elisha used to serve Elijah."
12 Jehoshaphat said, "The Lord speaks through him." So the king of Israel went down to see Elisha. Jehoshaphat and the king of Edom also went there.
13 Elisha spoke to the king of Israel. He said, "What do you and I have in common? Go to your father's prophets. Go to your mother's prophets." "No," the king of Israel answered. "The Lord called us three kings together. He did it to hand us over to Moab."
14 Elisha said, "I serve the Lord who rules over all. You can be sure that he lives. And you can be just as sure that I have respect for Jehoshaphat, the king of Judah. If I didn't, I wouldn't look at you or even notice you.
15 But now bring me someone who plays the harp." While that person was playing the harp, the Lord's powerful hand came on Elisha.
16 Elisha announced, "The Lord says, 'Dig a lot of ditches in this valley.'
17 Do it because the Lord says, 'You will not see wind or rain. But this valley will be filled with water. Then you, your cattle and your other animals will have water to drink.'
18 "That's an easy thing for the Lord to do. He will also hand Moab over to you.
19 You will destroy every city that has high walls around it. You will destroy every major town. You will cut down every good tree. You will stop up all of the springs of water. And you will cover every good field with stones."
20 The next day, the time came to offer the morning sacrifice. And then it happened! Water was flowing from the direction of Edom! In fact, the land was filled with water!
21 Now all of the people of Moab had heard that the kings had come to fight against them. So Moab sent for all of its fighting men. It didn't matter whether they were young or old. They sent for everyone who could carry a weapon. All of them were stationed at the border.
22 They got up early in the morning. The sun was already shining on the water. Across the way, the water looked red to the men of Moab. It looked like blood.
23 "That's blood!" they said. "Those kings must have fought and killed each other. Let's go, Moab! Let's take everything that has any value."
24 So the men of Moab went to the camp of Israel. Just as they arrived there, the men of Israel got ready to fight. They fought against the men of Moab until they ran away. The men of Israel marched into the land and attacked it. They killed the people of Moab.
25 They destroyed the towns. Each man threw a large stone on every good field. They did that until the fields were covered. They stopped up all of the springs of water. And they cut down every good tree. The only town that was left with any stones in place was Kir Hareseth. But men who were armed with slings surrounded it. Then they attacked it.
26 The king of Moab saw that the battle had gone against him. So he took with him 700 men who had swords. They tried to break through the battle lines to the king of Edom. But they couldn't do it.
27 Then the king of Moab got his oldest son. He was the son who would become the next king after him. He offered his son as a sacrifice on the city wall. That shocked and terrified the men of Israel. So they pulled back. And they returned to their own land.

2 And he wrought H6213 evil H7451 in the sight H5869 B-CMP of the LORD H3068 EDS ; but H7535 ADV not H3808 NADV like his father H1 , and like his mother H517 : for he put away H5493 W-VHY3MS the image H4676 of Baal H1168 that H834 RPRO his father H1 had made H6213 VQQ3MS .
3 Nevertheless H7535 ADV he cleaved H1692 unto the sins H2403 of Jeroboam H3379 the son H1121 of Nebat H5028 , which H834 RPRO made Israel H3478 to sin H2398 ; he departed H5493 not H3808 NADV therefrom H4480 PREP-3FS .
4 And Mesha H4338 king H4428 NMS of Moab H4124 was H1961 VQQ3MS a sheepmaster H5349 , and rendered H7725 unto the king H4428 NMS of Israel H3478 a hundred H3967 MFS thousand H505 W-BMS lambs H3733 , and a hundred H3967 thousand H505 W-BMS rams H352 NMP , with the wool H6785 .
5 But it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS , when Ahab H256 was dead H4194 , that the king H4428 NMS of Moab H4124 rebelled H6586 against the king H4428 NMS of Israel H3478 LMS .
6 And king H4428 D-NMS Jehoram H3088 went out H3318 W-VQY3MS of Samaria H8111 the same H1931 D-PPRO-3MS time H3117 B-AMS , and numbered H6485 all H3605 NMS Israel H3478 LMS .
7 And he went H1980 W-VQY3MS and sent H7971 W-VQY3MS to H413 PREP Jehoshaphat H3092 the king H4428 NMS of Judah H3063 , saying H559 W-VQY3MS , The king H4428 NMS of Moab H4124 hath rebelled H6586 against me : wilt thou go H1980 with H854 PREP-1MS me against H413 PREP Moab H4124 to battle H4421 ? And he said H559 W-VQY3MS , I will go up H5927 : I am as thou art , my people H5971 as thy people H5971 , and my horses H5483 as thy horses H5483 .
8 And he said H559 W-VQY3MS , Which H335 IPRO way H1870 NMS shall we go up H5927 ? And he answered H559 W-VQY3MS , The way H1870 NMS through the wilderness H4057 of Edom H123 .
9 So the king H4428 NMS of Israel H3478 went H1980 W-VQY3MS , and the king H4428 NMS of Judah H3063 , and the king H4428 NMS of Edom H123 : and they fetched a compass H5437 of seven H7651 RMS days H3117 NMP \' journey H1870 NMS : and there was H1961 VQQ3MS no H3808 W-NPAR water H4325 OMD for the host H4264 , and for the cattle H929 that H834 RPRO followed H7272 them .
10 And the king H4428 NMS of Israel H3478 said H559 W-VQY3MS , Alas H162 ! that H3588 CONJ the LORD H3068 EDS hath called H7121 VQQ3MS these H428 D-DPRO-3MP three H7969 L-BMS kings H4428 NMS together , to deliver H5414 L-VQFC them into the hand H3027 B-CFS of Moab H4124 !
11 But Jehoshaphat H3092 said H559 W-VQY3MS , Is there not H369 here H6311 ADV a prophet H5030 of the LORD H3068 L-EDS , that we may inquire H1875 of the LORD H3068 EDS by him ? And one H259 MMS of the king H4428 NMS of Israel\'s servants H5650 answered H6030 W-VQY3MS and said H559 W-VQY3MS , Here H6311 ADV is Elisha H477 the son H1121 of Shaphat H8202 , which H834 RPRO poured H3332 water H4325 OMD on H5921 PREP the hands H3027 CFD of Elijah H452 .
12 And Jehoshaphat H3092 said H559 W-VQY3MS , The word H1697 CMS of the LORD H3068 EDS is H3426 PART with H854 him . So the king H4428 NMS of Israel H3478 and Jehoshaphat H3092 and the king H4428 NMS of Edom H123 went down H3381 to H413 PREP-3MS him .
13 And Elisha H477 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP the king H4428 NMS of Israel H3478 , What H4100 IPRO have I to do with thee ? get H1980 VQI2MS thee to H413 PREP the prophets H5030 of thy father H1 NMS , and to H413 PREP the prophets H5030 of thy mother H517 . And the king H4428 NMS of Israel H3478 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto him , Nay H408 NPAR : for H3588 CONJ the LORD H3068 EDS hath called H7121 VQQ3MS these H428 D-DPRO-3MP three H7969 L-BMS kings H4428 NMS together , to deliver H5414 L-VQFC them into the hand H3027 B-CFS of Moab H4124 .
14 And Elisha H477 said H559 W-VQY3MS , As the LORD H3068 EDS of hosts H6635 liveth H2416 AMS , before H6440 CMP whom H834 RPRO I stand H5975 VQQ1MS , surely H3588 CONJ , were it not H3884 that I H589 PPRO-1MS regard H5375 the presence H6440 CMP of Jehoshaphat H3092 the king H4428 NMS of Judah H3063 , I would not look H5027 toward H413 PREP-2MS thee , nor H518 PART see H7200 thee .
15 But now H6258 W-ADV bring H3947 me a minstrel H5059 . And it came to pass H1961 W-VQQ3MS , when the minstrel H5059 played H5059 , that the hand H3027 CFS of the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS came H1961 W-VQQ3MS upon H5921 PREP-3MS him .
16 And he said H559 W-VQY3MS , Thus H3541 saith H559 W-VQY3MS the LORD H3068 EDS , Make H6213 this H2088 D-PMS valley H5158 full of ditches H1356 .
17 For H3588 CONJ thus H3541 saith H559 VQQ3MS the LORD H3068 EDS , Ye shall not H3808 ADV see H7200 wind H7307 NFS , neither H3808 ADV shall ye see H7200 rain H1653 ; yet that H1931 D-PPRO-3MS valley H5158 shall be filled H4390 with water H4325 NMD , that ye may drink H8354 , both ye H859 PPRO-2MS , and your cattle H4735 , and your beasts H929 .
18 And this H2063 DPRO is but a light thing H7043 in the sight H5869 B-CMP of the LORD H3068 EDS : he will deliver H5414 W-VQQ3MS the Moabites H4124 also into your hand H3027 .
19 And ye shall smite H5221 every H3605 NMS fenced H4013 city H5892 GFS , and every H3605 NMS choice H4004 city H5892 GFS , and shall fell H5307 VHY2MP every H3605 NMS good H2896 AMS tree H6086 NMS , and stop H5640 all H3605 NMS wells H4599 of water H4325 OMD , and mar H3510 every H3605 NMS good H2896 AMS piece of land H2513 with stones H68 .
20 And it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS in the morning H1242 , when the meat offering H4503 was offered H5927 K-VQFC , that , behold H2009 IJEC , there came H935 water H4325 OMD by the way H1870 of Edom H123 , and the country H776 D-GFS was filled H4390 W-VNY3FS with H854 PREP water H4325 OMD .
21 And when all H3605 W-CMS the Moabites H4124 heard H8085 VQQ3MP that H3588 CONJ the kings H4428 were come up H5927 to fight H3898 against them , they gathered all H6817 that were able to put on H2296 armor H2290 , and upward H4605 , and stood H5975 in H5921 PREP the border H1366 .
22 And they rose up early H7925 in the morning H1242 , and the sun H8121 shone H2224 upon H5921 PREP the water H4325 D-OMD , and the Moabites H4124 saw H7200 W-VQY3MP the water H4325 D-OMD on the other side H5048 M-PREP as red H122 as blood H1818 :
23 And they said H559 , This H2088 DPRO is blood H1818 NMS : the kings H4428 are surely slain H2717 , and they have smitten H5221 W-VHY3MP one H376 NMS another H7453 NMS-3MS : now H6258 W-ADV therefore , Moab H4124 , to the spoil H7998 .
24 And when they came H935 W-VQY3MP to H413 PREP the camp H4264 of Israel H3478 , the Israelites H3478 rose up H6965 and smote H5221 W-VHY3MP the Moabites H4124 , so that they fled H5127 W-VQY3MP before H6440 M-CMP-3MP them : but they went H5221 forward smiting H5221 W-VHY3MP the Moabites H4124 , even in their country .
25 And they beat down H2040 the cities H5892 , and on every H3605 W-CMS good H2896 NFS piece H2513 of land cast H7993 every man H376 NMS his stone H68 , and filled H4390 it ; and they stopped H5640 all H3605 W-CMS the wells H4599 of water H4325 OMD , and felled H5307 all H3605 W-CMS the good H2896 NFS trees H6086 NMS : only H5704 PREP in Kir H7025 - haraseth left H7604 they the stones H68 CFP-3FS thereof ; howbeit the slingers H7051 went about H5437 it , and smote H5221 it .
26 And when the king H4428 NMS of Moab H4124 saw H7200 W-VIY3MS that H3588 CONJ the battle H4421 was too sore H2388 for H4480 M-PREP-3MS him , he took H3947 W-VQY3MS with H854 him seven H7651 hundred H3967 BFP men H376 NMS that drew H8025 swords H2719 GFS , to break through H1234 even unto H413 PREP the king H4428 NMS of Edom H123 : but they could H3201 not H3808 W-NPAR .
27 Then he took H3947 W-VQY3MS his eldest H1060 son H1121 CMS-3MS that H834 RPRO should have reigned H4427 in his stead H8478 PREP-3MS , and offered H5927 him for a burnt offering H5930 upon H5921 PREP the wall H2346 . And there was H1961 W-VQY3MS great H1419 AMS indignation H7110 against H5921 PREP Israel H3478 : and they departed H5265 from PREP him , and returned H7725 W-VUY3MP to their own land H776 .
