1 Kings 3:1 (NIRV) New International Reader's Version

1 Solomon and Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, agreed to help each other. So Solomon got married to Pharaoh's daughter. He brought her to the City of David. She stayed there until he finished building his palace, the Lord's temple, and the wall that was around Jerusalem.
2 But the people continued to offer sacrifices at the high places where they worshiped. That's because a temple hadn't been built yet where the Lord would put his Name.
3 Solomon showed his love for the Lord. He did it by obeying the laws his father David had taught him. But Solomon offered sacrifices at the high places. He also burned incense there.
4 King Solomon went to the city of Gibeon to offer sacrifices. That's where the most important high place was. He offered 1,000 burnt offerings on the altar that was there.
5 The Lord appeared to Solomon at Gibeon. He spoke to him in a dream during the night. God said, "Ask for anything you want me to give you."
6 Solomon answered, "You have been very kind to my father David, your servant. That's because he was faithful to you. He did what was right. His heart was honest. And you have continued to be very kind to him. You have given him a son to sit on his throne this very day.
7 "Lord my God, you have now made me king. You have put me in the place of my father David. But I'm only a little child. I don't know how to carry out my duties.
8 I'm here among the people you have chosen. They are a great nation. They are more than anyone can count.
9 So give me a heart that understands. Then I can rule over your people. I can tell the difference between what is right and what is wrong. Who can possibly rule over this great nation of yours?"
10 The Lord was pleased that Solomon had asked for that.
11 So God said to him, "You have not asked to live for a long time. You have not asked to be wealthy. You have not even asked to have your enemies killed. Instead, you have asked for understanding. You want to do what is right and fair when you judge people. Because that is what you have asked for,
12 I will give it to you. I will give you a wise and understanding heart. So here is what will be true of you. There has never been anyone like you. And there never will be.
13 "And that is not all. I will give you what you have not asked for. I will give you riches and honor. As long as you live, no other king will be as great as you are.
14 Live the way I want you to. Obey my laws and commands, just as your father David did. Then I will let you live for a long time."
15 Solomon woke up. He realized he had been dreaming. He returned to Jerusalem. He stood in front of the ark of the Lord's covenant. He sacrificed burnt offerings and friendship offerings. Then he gave a big dinner for all of his officials.
16 Two prostitutes came to the king. They stood in front of him.
17 One of them said, "My master, this woman and I live in the same house. I had a baby while she was there with me.
18 Three days after my child was born, this woman also had a baby. We were alone. There wasn't anyone in the house but the two of us.
19 "During the night this woman's baby died. It happened because she was lying on top of him.
20 So she got up in the middle of the night. She took my son from my side while I was asleep. She put him by her breast. Then she put her dead son by my breast.
21 The next morning, I got up to nurse my son. But he was dead! I looked at him closely in the morning light. And I saw that it wasn't my baby."
22 The other woman said, "No! The living baby is my son. The dead one belongs to you." But the first woman said, "No! The dead baby is yours. The living one belongs to me." So they argued in front of the king.
23 The king said, "One of you says, 'My son is alive. Your son is dead.' The other one says, 'No! Your son is dead. Mine is alive.' "
24 He continued, "Bring me a sword." So a sword was brought to him.
25 Then he gave an order. He said, "Cut the living child in two. Give half to one woman and half to the other."
26 The woman whose son was alive was filled with deep concern for her son. She said to the king, "My master, please give her the living baby! Don't kill him!" But the other woman said, "Neither one of us will have him. Cut him in two!"
27 Then the king made his decision. He said, "Give the living baby to the first woman. Don't kill him. She's his mother."
28 All of the people of Israel heard about the decision the king had given. That gave them great respect for him. They saw that God had given him wisdom. They knew that Solomon would do what was right and fair when he judged people.

2 Only H7535 ADV the people H5971 sacrificed H2076 in high places H1116 , because H3588 CONJ there was no H3808 NADV house H1004 built H1129 unto the name H8034 of the LORD H3068 EDS , until H5704 PREP those H1992 days H3117 D-NMP .
3 And Solomon H8010 MMS loved H157 the LORD H3068 EDS , walking H1980 L-VQFC in the statutes H2708 of David H1732 MMS his father H1 CMS-3MS : only H7535 ADV he H1931 PPRO-3MS sacrificed H2076 and burnt incense H6999 in high places H1116 .
4 And the king H4428 D-NMS went H1980 W-VQY3MS to Gibeon H1391 to sacrifice H2076 there H8033 ADV ; for H3588 CONJ that H1931 PPRO-3FS was the great H1419 D-AFS high place H1116 : a thousand H505 W-BMS burnt offerings H5930 CFP did Solomon H8010 MMS offer H5927 VQY3MS upon H5921 PREP that H1931 PPRO-3FS altar H4196 D-NMS .
5 In Gibeon H1391 the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS appeared H7200 to H413 PREP Solomon H8010 MMS in a dream H2472 BD-NMS by night H3915 AMS : and God H430 EDP said H559 W-VQY3MS , Ask H7592 VQI2MS what H4100 IGAT I shall give H5414 thee .
6 And Solomon H8010 MMS said H559 W-VQY3MS , Thou H859 PPRO-2MS hast showed H6213 VQQ2MS unto H5973 PREP thy servant H5650 David H1732 my father H1 CMS-1MS great H1419 AMS mercy H2617 NMS , according as H834 K-RPRO he walked H1980 VQQ3MS before H6440 L-CMP-2MS thee in truth H571 , and in righteousness H6666 , and in uprightness H3483 of heart H3824 NMS with H5973 PREP-2FS thee ; and thou hast kept H8104 for him this H2088 D-PMS great H1419 AMS kindness H2617 , that thou hast given H5414 him a son H1121 to sit H3427 VQPMS on H5921 PREP his throne H3678 , as it is this H2088 D-PMS day H3117 .

8 And thy servant H5650 is in the midst H8432 B-NMS of thy people H5971 which H834 RPRO thou hast chosen H977 , a great H7227 AMS people H5971 NMS , that H834 RPRO cannot H3808 ADV be numbered H4487 nor H3808 W-NADV counted H5608 for multitude H7230 .
9 Give H5414 therefore thy servant H5650 an understanding H8085 heart H3820 NMS to judge H8199 thy people H5971 , that I may discern H995 L-VHFC between H996 good H2896 AMS and bad H7451 : for H3588 CONJ who H4310 IPRO is able H3201 VQY3MS to judge H8199 this H2088 D-PMS thy so great H3515 a people H5971 ?
10 And the speech H1697 D-NMS pleased H3190 the Lord H136 EDS , that H3588 CONJ Solomon H8010 MMS had asked H7592 this H2088 D-PMS thing H1697 D-NMS .
11 And God H430 EDP said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP-3MS him , Because H3282 ADV thou hast asked H7592 this H2088 D-PMS thing H1697 D-NMS , and hast not H3808 W-NPAR asked H7592 for thyself long H7227 AMP life H3117 NMP ; neither H3808 W-NPAR hast asked H7592 riches H6239 for thyself , nor H3808 W-NPAR hast asked H7592 the life H5315 GFS of thine enemies H341 VQPMP-2MS ; but hast asked H7592 for thyself understanding H995 to discern H8085 judgment H4941 NMS ;
12 Behold H2009 IJEC , I have done H6213 VQQ1MS according to thy words H1697 : lo H2009 IJEC , I have given H5414 UNKN thee a wise H2450 AMS and an understanding H995 W-VNPMS heart H3820 NMS ; so that H834 RPRO there was H1961 VQQ3MS none H3808 NADV like thee H3644 PREP-2MS before H6440 L-CMP-2MS thee , neither H3808 NADV after H310 thee shall any arise H6965 VQY3MS like unto thee H3644 .
13 And I have also H1571 W-CONJ given H5414 VQQ1MS thee that which H834 RPRO thou hast not H3808 ADV asked H7592 , both H1571 CONJ riches H6239 , and H1571 CONJ honor H3519 : so that H834 RPRO there shall not H3808 NADV be H1961 VQQ3MS any H376 NMS among the kings H4428 like unto thee H3644 all H3605 NMS thy days H3117 .
14 And if H518 W-PART thou wilt walk H1980 VQY2MS in my ways H1870 , to keep H8104 L-VQFC my statutes H2706 and my commandments H4687 W-CFP-1MS , as H834 K-RPRO thy father H1 NMS David H1732 did walk H1980 VQQ3MS , then I will lengthen H748 thy days H3117 .
15 And Solomon H8010 MMS awoke H3364 ; and , behold H2009 IJEC , it was a dream H2472 . And he came H935 W-VQY3MS to Jerusalem H3389 , and stood H5975 before H6440 L-CMP the ark H727 of the covenant H1285 NFS of the LORD H136 EDS , and offered up H5927 W-VHY3MS burnt offerings H5930 CFP , and offered H6213 W-VQY3MS peace offerings H8002 , and made H6213 W-VQY3MS a feast H4960 NMS to all H3605 L-CMS his servants H5650 .
16 Then H227 ADV came H935 there two H8147 MFD women H802 GFP , that were harlots H2181 , unto H413 PREP the king H4428 D-NMS , and stood H5975 before H6440 him .
17 And the one H259 D-ONUM woman H802 D-NFS said H559 W-VQY3FS , O H994 my lord H113 , I H589 PPRO-1MS and this H2063 D-DFS woman H802 dwell H3427 in one H259 MMS house H1004 ; and I was delivered of a child H3205 with H5973 PREP-3FS her in the house H1004 .
18 And it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS the third H7992 D-ONUM day H3117 B-AMS after that I was delivered H3205 , that this H2063 D-DFS woman H802 D-NFS was delivered H3205 W-VQY3FS also H1571 CONJ : and we H587 were together H3162 ADV-3MS ; there was no H369 ADV stranger H2114 VQPMS with H854 PREP-1MP us in the house H1004 , save H2108 we H587 PPRO-1MP two H8147 in the house H1004 .
19 And this H2063 D-DFS woman H802 D-NFS \'s child H1121 died H4191 W-VQY3MS in the night H3915 NFS ; because H834 RPRO she overlaid H7901 it .
20 And she arose H6965 at midnight H8432 B-NMS , and took H3947 W-VQY3FS my son H1121 NMS-1MS from beside H681 me , while thine handmaid H519 slept H3463 , and laid H7901 it in her bosom H2436 , and laid H7901 her dead H4191 child H1121 NMS-1MS in my bosom H2436 .
21 And when I rose H6965 in the morning H1242 B-NMS to give my child suck H3242 , behold H2009 IJEC , it was dead H4191 : but when I had considered H995 it in the morning H1242 B-NMS , behold H2009 IJEC , it was H1961 VQQ3MS not H3808 ADV my son H1121 NMS-1MS , which H834 RPRO I did bear H3205 .
22 And the other H312 woman H802 D-NFS said H559 W-VQY3FS , Nay H3808 NADV ; but H3588 CONJ the living H2416 is my son H1121 NMS-1MS , and the dead H4191 is thy son H1121 NMS-1MS . And this H2063 said H559 , No H3808 NADV ; but H3588 CONJ the dead H4191 is thy son H1121 NMS-1MS , and the living H2416 is my son H1121 NMS-1MS . Thus they spoke H1696 before H6440 L-CMP the king H4428 .
23 Then said H559 W-VQY3MS the king H4428 D-NMS , The one H2063 DPRO saith H559 W-VQY3MS , This H2088 DPRO is my son H1121 NMS-1MS that liveth H2416 , and thy son H1121 NMS-1MS is the dead H4191 : and the other H2063 saith H559 W-VQY3MS , Nay H3808 NADV ; but H3588 CONJ thy son H1121 NMS-1MS is the dead H4191 , and my son H1121 NMS-1MS is the living H2416 .
24 And the king H4428 D-NMS said H559 W-VQY3MS , Bring H3947 me a sword H2719 NFS . And they brought H935 a sword H2719 D-GFS before H6440 L-CMP the king H4428 .
25 And the king H4428 D-NMS said H559 W-VQY3MS , Divide H1504 the living H2416 child H3206 in two H8147 , and give H5414 half H2677 to the one H259 , and half H2677 to the other H259 .
26 Then spoke H559 W-VQY3FS the woman H802 D-NFS whose H834 RPRO the living H2416 child H1121 was unto H413 PREP the king H4428 D-NMS , for H3588 CONJ her bowels H7356 yearned H3648 upon H5921 PREP her son H1121 , and she said H559 W-VQY3FS , O H994 my lord H113 , give H5414 her the living H2416 child H3205 , and in no H408 NPAR wise slay H4191 it . But the other H2063 said H559 , Let it be H1961 VQY3MS neither H1571 CONJ mine nor H1571 CONJ thine , but divide H1504 it .
27 Then the king H4428 D-NMS answered H6030 W-VQY3MS and said H559 W-VQY3MS , Give H5414 her the living H2416 child H3205 , and in no H3808 NADV wise slay H4191 it : she H1931 PPRO-3FS is the mother H517 CFS-3MS thereof .
28 And all H3605 CMS Israel H3478 heard H8085 of the judgment H4941 which H834 RPRO the king H4428 D-NMS had judged H8199 ; and they feared H3372 the king H4428 D-NMS : for H3588 CONJ they saw H7200 VQQ3MP that H3588 CONJ the wisdom H2451 of God H430 EDP was in him H7130 , to do H6213 L-VQFC judgment H4941 NMS .
