Ezekiel 36:1 (NIRV) New International Reader's Version

1 "Son of man, prophesy to the mountains of Israel. Tell them, 'Mountains of Israel, listen to the Lord's message.
2 The Lord and King says, "Your enemies made fun of you. They bragged, 'The hills you lived in for a long time belong to us now.' " '
3 "Ezekiel, prophesy. Say, 'The Lord and King says, "Your enemies destroyed you. They hunted you down from every side. So the rest of the nations took over your land. People talked about you. They told lies about you." ' "
4 Mountains of Israel, listen to the message of the Lord and King. He speaks to you mountains, hills, canyons and valleys. He speaks to you destroyed cities and deserted towns. The rest of the nations around you took everything of value away from you. They made fun of you.
5 So the Lord and King says, "My anger burns against those nations. I have spoken against them and the whole land of Edom. They were very happy when they took over my land. Deep down inside them they hated Israel. They wanted to take its grasslands.
6 "Ezekiel, prophesy about the land of Israel. Speak to the mountains, hills, canyons and valleys. Tell them, 'The Lord and King says, "My jealous anger burns against the nations. They have laughed at you."
7 So the Lord and King says, "I raise my hand and take an oath. I promise that the nations around you will also be laughed at.
8 " ' "Mountains of Israel, you will produce branches and bear fruit for my people Israel. They will come home soon.
9 I am concerned about you. I will look on you with favor. Farmers will plow your ground. They will plant seeds in it.
10 " ' "I will multiply the number of people who live in Israel. The towns will no longer be empty. Their broken-down houses will be rebuilt.
11 I will increase the number of your people and animals. They will have many babies. I will settle people in your towns, just as I did in the past. I will help you succeed more than ever before. Then you will know that I am the Lord.
12 " ' "I will let my people Israel walk there again. They will possess you. They will receive you as their own. You will never take their children away from them again." ' "
13 The Lord and King says, "People say to you mountains, 'You destroy people. You let your nation's children be taken away.'
14 But I will not let you destroy people anymore. I will no longer let your nation's children be taken away," announces the Lord and King.
15 "You will not have to listen to the nations laughing at you anymore. People will no longer make fun of you. You will not let your nation fall," announces the Lord and King.
16 Another message came to me from the Lord. He said,
17 "Son of man, the people of Israel used to live in their own land. But they polluted it because of how they acted and the way they lived. To me they were 'unclean' like a woman who was having her monthly period.
18 "They spilled people's blood in the land. They polluted the land by worshiping other gods. So I poured out my burning anger on them.
19 I scattered them among the nations. I sent them to other countries. I judged them based on how they acted and the way they lived.
20 "They treated my name as if it were not holy. They did it everywhere they went among the nations. People said about them, 'They are the Lord's people. But they were forced to leave his land.'
21 I was concerned about my holy name. The people of Israel treated it as if it were not holy. They did it everywhere they went among the nations.
22 "But tell the people of Israel, 'The Lord and King speaks. He says, "People of Israel, I will not take action for your benefit. Instead, I will act for the honor of my holy name. You have treated it as if it were not holy. You did it everywhere you went among the nations.
23 But I will show everyone how holy my great name is. You have treated it as if it were not holy. So I will use you to show the nations how holy I am. Then they will know that I am the Lord," announces the Lord and King.
24 " ' "I will take you out of the nations. I will gather you together from all of the countries. I will bring you back into your own land.
25 " ' "I will sprinkle pure water on you. Then you will be 'clean.' I will make you completely pure and clean. I will take all of the statues of your gods away from you.
26 I will give you new hearts. I will give you a new spirit that is faithful to me. I will remove your stubborn hearts from you. I will give you hearts that obey me.
27 " ' "I will put my Spirit in you. I will move you to follow my rules. I want you to be careful to keep my laws.
28 You will live in the land I gave your people long ago. You will be my people. And I will be your God.
29 " ' "I will save you from all of your 'uncleanness.' I will give you plenty of grain. You will have more than enough. So you will never be hungry again.
30 I will multiply the fruit on your trees. I will increase the crops in your fields. Then the nations will no longer make fun of you because you are hungry.
31 " ' "You will remember your evil ways and the sinful things you have done. You will hate yourselves because you have sinned so much. I also hate your evil practices.
32 I want you to know that I am not doing those things for your benefit," announces the Lord and King. "People of Israel, you should be ashamed of yourselves! Your conduct has brought dishonor to you." ' "
33 The Lord and King says, "I will make you pure from all of your sins. On that day I will settle you in your towns again. Your broken-down houses will be rebuilt.
34 The dry and empty land will be farmed again. "Everyone who passes through it will see that it is no longer empty.
35 They will say, 'This land was completely destroyed. But now it's like the Garden of Eden. The cities were full of broken-down buildings. They were destroyed and empty. But now they have high walls around them. And people live in them.'
36 "Then the nations that remain around you will know that I have rebuilt what was once destroyed. I have planted again the fields that were once empty. I have spoken. And I will do it. I am the Lord."
37 The Lord and King says, "Once again I will answer the prayers of the people of Israel. Here is what I will do for them. I will multiply them as if they were sheep.
38 Large flocks of animals are sacrificed at Jerusalem during the appointed feasts there. In the same way, the destroyed cities will be filled with flocks of people. Then they will know that I am the Lord."

2 Thus H3541 saith H559 VQQ3MS the Lord H136 EDS GOD H3069 ; Because H3282 ADV the enemy H341 hath said H559 VQQ3MS against H5921 PREP-2MP you , Aha H1889 IJEC , even the ancient H5769 NMS high places H1116 are H1961 VQQ3FS ours in possession H4181 :
3 Therefore H3651 L-ADV prophesy H5012 and say H559 , Thus H3541 saith H559 VQQ3MS the Lord H136 EDS GOD H3069 ; Because H3282 ADV they have made you desolate H8074 , and swallowed you up H7602 on every side H5439 M-ADV , that ye might be H1961 a possession H4181 unto the residue H7611 of the heathen H1471 D-NMP , and ye are taken up H5927 in H5921 PREP the lips H8193 CFS of talkers H3956 NMS , and are an infamy H1681 of the people H5971 NMS :
4 Therefore H3651 L-ADV , ye mountains H2022 CMP of Israel H3478 , hear H8085 VQI2MP the word H1697 CMS of the Lord H136 EDS GOD H3069 ; Thus H3541 saith H559 VQQ3MS the Lord H136 EDS GOD H3069 to the mountains H2022 , and to the hills H1389 , to the rivers H650 , and to the valleys H1516 , to the desolate H8074 wastes H2723 , and to the cities H5892 that are forsaken H5800 , which H834 RPRO became H1961 VQQ3MP a prey H957 and derision H3933 to the residue H7611 of the heathen H1471 D-NMP that H834 RPRO are round about H5439 ;
5 Therefore H3651 L-ADV thus H3541 saith H559 VQQ3MS the Lord H136 EDS GOD H3069 ; Surely H518 PART in the fire H784 of my jealousy H7068 have I spoken H1696 against H5921 PREP the residue H7611 of the heathen H1471 D-NMP , and against H5921 PREP all H3605 NMS Idumea H123 , which H834 RPRO have appointed H5414 my land H776 into their possession H4181 with the joy H8057 of all H3605 NMS their heart H3824 NMS , with despiteful H7589 minds H5315 GFS , to H4616 L-CONJ cast it out H1644 for a prey H957 .
6 Prophesy H5012 therefore H3651 L-ADV concerning H5921 PREP the land H127 of Israel H3478 , and say H559 unto the mountains H2022 , and to the hills H1389 , to the rivers H650 , and to the valleys H1516 , Thus H3541 saith H559 VQQ3MS the Lord H136 EDS GOD H3069 ; Behold H2009 , I have spoken H1696 VPQ1MS in my jealousy H7068 and in my fury H2534 , because H3282 ADV ye have borne H5375 the shame H3639 of the heathen H1471 NMP :
7 Therefore H3651 L-ADV thus H3541 saith H559 VQQ3MS the Lord H136 EDS GOD H3069 ; I H589 PPRO-1MS have lifted up H5375 VQQ1MS mine hand H3027 CFS-1MS , Surely H518 PART the heathen H1471 D-NMP that H834 RPRO are about H5439 M-ADV you , they H1992 PPRO-3MP shall bear H5375 their shame H3639 .
8 But ye H859 W-PPRO-2MP , O mountains H2022 CMP of Israel H3478 , ye shall shoot forth H5414 your branches H6057 , and yield H5375 your fruit H6529 to my people H5971 of Israel H3478 ; for H3588 CONJ they are at hand H7126 to come H935 .
9 For H3588 CONJ , behold H2009 , I am for H413 you , and I will turn H6437 unto H413 you , and ye shall be tilled H5647 and sown H2232 :
10 And I will multiply H7235 men H120 NMS upon H5921 PREP-2MP you , all H3605 NMS the house H1004 CMS of Israel H3478 , even all H3605 NMS of it : and the cities H5892 shall be inhabited H3427 , and the wastes H2723 shall be built H1129 :
11 And I will multiply H7235 upon H5921 PREP-2MP you man H120 NMS and beast H929 W-NFS ; and they shall increase H7235 W-VQQ3MP and bring fruit H6509 W-VQQ3MP : and I will settle H3427 you after your old estates H6927 , and will do better H3190 unto you than at your beginnings H7221 : and ye shall know H3045 that H3588 CONJ I H589 PPRO-1MS am the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS .
12 Yea , I will cause men H120 NMS to walk H1980 upon H5921 PREP-2MP you , even my people H5971 Israel H3478 ; and they shall possess H3423 thee , and thou shalt be H1961 W-VQQ2MS their inheritance H5159 , and thou shalt no H3808 W-NPAR more H3254 henceforth H5750 ADV bereave H7921 them of men .
13 Thus H3541 saith H559 VQQ3MS the Lord H136 EDS GOD H3069 ; Because H3282 ADV they say H559 unto you , Thou H859 land devourest up H398 men H120 NMS , and hast bereaved H1961 thy nations H1471 ;
14 Therefore H3651 L-ADV thou shalt devour H398 men H120 NMS no H3808 NADV more H5750 ADV , neither H3808 NADV bereave H7921 thy nations H1471 any more H5750 ADV , saith H5002 the Lord H136 EDS GOD H3069 .
15 Neither H3808 W-NPAR will I cause men to hear H8085 in H413 thee the shame H3639 of the heathen H1471 D-NMP any more H5750 ADV , neither H3808 W-NPAR shalt thou bear H5375 the reproach H2781 of the people H5971 NMP any more H5750 ADV , neither H3808 W-NPAR shalt thou cause thy nations H1471 to fall H3782 any more H5750 ADV , saith H5002 the Lord H136 EDS GOD H3069 .
16 Moreover the word H1697 NMS of the LORD H3068 EDS came H1961 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP-1MS me , saying H559 L-VQFC ,
17 Son H1121 of man H120 NMS , when the house H1004 CMS of Israel H3478 dwelt H3427 in H5921 PREP their own land H127 , they defiled H2930 it by their own way H1870 and by their doings H5949 : their way H1870 CMS-3MP was H1961 VQQ3FS before H6440 L-CMP-1MS me as the uncleanness H2932 of a removed woman H5079 .
18 Wherefore I poured H8210 my fury H2534 upon H5921 PREP them for H5921 PREP the blood H1818 that H834 RPRO they had shed H8210 upon H5921 PREP the land H776 D-GFS , and for their idols H1544 wherewith they had polluted H2930 it :
19 And I scattered H6327 them among the heathen H1471 , and they were dispersed H2219 through the countries H776 : according to their way H1870 and according to their doings H5949 I judged H8199 them .
20 And when they entered H935 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP the heathen H1471 D-NMP , whither H834 RPRO they went H935 VQQ3MP , they profaned H2490 my holy H6944 name H8034 CMS , when they said H559 to them , These H428 PMP are the people H5971 NMS of the LORD H3068 EDS , and are gone forth H3318 out of his land H776 .
21 But I had pity H2550 for H5921 PREP mine holy H6944 name H8034 CMS , which H834 RPRO the house H1004 CMS of Israel H3478 had profaned H2490 among the heathen H1471 , whither H834 RPRO they went H935 VQQ3MP .
22 Therefore H3651 L-ADV say H559 unto the house H1004 of Israel H3478 , Thus H3541 saith H559 VQQ3MS the Lord H136 EDS GOD H3069 ; I H589 PPRO-1MS do H6213 VQPMS not H3808 NADV this for your sakes H4616 , O house H1004 CMS of Israel H3478 , but H518 PART for mine holy H6944 name H8034 \'s sake , which H834 RPRO ye have profaned H2490 among the heathen H1471 , whither H834 RPRO ye went H935 .
23 And I will sanctify H6942 my great H1419 D-AMS name H8034 , which was profaned H2490 among the heathen H1471 , which H834 RPRO ye have profaned H2490 in the midst H8432 of them ; and the heathen H1471 D-NMP shall know H3045 that H3588 CONJ I H589 PPRO-1MS am the LORD H3068 EDS , saith H5002 the Lord H136 EDS GOD H3069 , when I shall be sanctified H6942 in you before their eyes H5869 L-CMD-3MP .
24 For I will take H3947 you from among H4480 PREP the heathen H1471 D-NMP , and gather H6908 you out of all H3605 M-CMS countries H776 , and will bring H935 you into H413 PREP your own land H127 .
25 Then will I sprinkle H2236 clean H2889 water H4325 OMD upon H5921 PREP-2MP you , and ye shall be clean H2891 : from all H3605 M-CMS your filthiness H2932 , and from all H3605 WM-CMS your idols H1544 , will I cleanse H2891 you .
26 A new H2319 heart H3820 NMS also will I give H5414 you , and a new H2319 spirit H7307 W-GFS will I put H5414 VQY1MS within H7130 you : and I will take away H5493 the stony H68 heart H3820 NMS out of your flesh H1320 , and I will give H5414 you a heart H3820 NMS of flesh H1320 NMS .
27 And I will put H5414 VQY1MS my spirit H7307 CFS-1MS within H7130 you , and cause H6213 you to walk H1980 in H854 my statutes H2706 , and ye shall keep H8104 my judgments H4941 , and do H6213 them .
28 And ye shall dwell H3427 in the land H776 B-NFS that H834 RPRO I gave H5414 VQQ1MS to your fathers H1 ; and ye shall be H1961 W-VQQ2MP my people H5971 , and I H595 W-PPRO-1MS will be H1961 VQY1MS your God H430 L-NMP .
29 I will also save H3467 you from all H3605 M-CMS your uncleannesses H2932 : and I will call H7121 for H413 PREP the corn H1715 , and will increase H7235 it , and lay H5414 VQY1MS no H3808 W-NPAR famine H7458 upon H5921 PREP-2MP you .
30 And I will multiply H7235 the fruit H6529 NMS of the tree H6086 AMS , and the increase H8570 of the field H7704 D-NMS , that L-CONJ ye shall receive H3947 no H3808 NADV more H5750 ADV reproach H2781 of famine H7458 NMS among the heathen H1471 .
31 Then shall ye remember H2142 your own evil H7451 ways H1870 , and your doings H4611 that H834 RPRO were not H3808 ADV good H2896 , and shall loathe yourselves H6962 in your own sight H6440 for H5921 PREP your iniquities H5771 and for H5921 PREP your abominations H8441 .
32 Not H3808 NADV for your sakes H4616 do H6213 VQPMS I H589 this , saith H5002 the Lord H136 EDS GOD H3069 , be it known H3045 unto you : be ashamed H954 and confounded H3637 for your own ways H1870 , O house H1004 CMS of Israel H3478 LMS .
33 Thus H3541 saith H559 VQQ3MS the Lord H136 EDS GOD H3069 ; In the day H3117 B-NMS that I shall have cleansed H2891 you from all H3605 M-CMS your iniquities H5771 I will also cause you to dwell H3427 in the cities H5892 , and the wastes H2723 shall be built H1129 .
34 And the desolate H8074 land H776 WD-GFS shall be tilled H5647 , whereas H8478 NMS it lay H1961 VQQ3FS desolate H8077 in the sight H5869 of all H3605 NMS that passed by H5674 .
35 And they shall say H559 W-VQQ3MP , This H1977 land H776 D-GFS that was desolate H8074 is become H1961 VQQ3FS like the garden H1588 K-CMS of Eden H5731 GFS ; and the waste H2720 and desolate H8074 and ruined H2040 cities H5892 are become fenced H1219 , and are inhabited H3427 .
36 Then the heathen H1471 D-NMP that H834 RPRO are left H7604 round about H5439 you shall know H3045 that H3588 CONJ I H589 PPRO-1MS the LORD H3068 EDS build H1129 the ruined H2040 places , and plant H5193 that that was desolate H8074 : I H589 PPRO-1MS the LORD H3068 EDS have spoken H1696 VPQ1MS it , and I will do H6213 it .
37 Thus H3541 saith H559 VQQ3MS the Lord H136 EDS GOD H3069 ; I will yet H5750 ADV for this H2063 DPRO be inquired of H1875 by the house H1004 of Israel H3478 , to do H6213 L-VQFC it for them ; I will increase H7235 VHY1MS them with men H120 like a flock H6629 .
38 As the holy H6944 flock H6629 , as the flock H6629 of Jerusalem H3389 in her solemn feasts H4150 ; so H3651 ADV shall the waste H2720 cities H5892 be H1961 filled H4392 with flocks H6629 NMS of men H120 NMS : and they shall know H3045 that H3588 CONJ I H589 PPRO-1MS am the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS .
