2 Chronicles 21:1 (NIRV) New International Reader's Version

1 Jehoshaphat joined the members of his family who had already died. His body was buried in the family tomb in the City of David. His son Jehoram became the next king after him.
2 Jehoram's brothers, the sons of Jehoshaphat, were Azariah, Jehiel, Zechariah, Azariahu, Michael and Shephatiah. All of them were sons of Jehoshaphat, the king of Israel.
3 Their father had given them many gifts. He had given them silver, gold and articles of value. He had also given them cities in Judah that had high walls around them. But he had made Jehoram king. That's because Jehoram was his oldest son.
4 Jehoram made his position secure over his father's kingdom. Then he killed all of his brothers with his sword. He also killed some of the princes of Israel.
5 Jehoram was 32 years old when he became king. He ruled in Jerusalem for eight years.
6 He followed the ways of the kings of Israel, just as the royal family of Ahab had done. In fact, he got married to a daughter of Ahab. Jehoram did what was evil in the sight of the Lord.
7 But the Lord didn't want to destroy the royal family of David. That's because the Lord had made a covenant with him. He had promised to keep the lamp of David's kingdom burning brightly for him and his children after him forever.
8 When Jehoram was king over Judah, Edom refused to remain under Judah's control. They set up their own king.
9 So Jehoram went to Edom. He took his officers and all of his chariots with him. The men of Edom surrounded him and his chariot commanders. But he got up at night and fought his way out.
10 To this very day Edom has refused to remain under Judah's control. At that same time, Libnah also refused to remain under the control of Judah. That's because Jehoram had deserted the Lord, the God of his people.
11 He had also built high places on the hills of Judah. He had caused the people of Jerusalem to worship other gods. They weren't faithful to the Lord. Jehoram had led Judah down the wrong path.
12 Jehoram received a letter from the prophet Elijah. It said, "The Lord is the God of your father David. The Lord says, 'You have not followed the ways of your own father Jehoshaphat or of Asa, the king of Judah.
13 Instead, you have followed the ways of the kings of Israel. You have led Judah and the people of Jerusalem to worship other gods, just as the royal family of Ahab did. Also, you have murdered your own brothers. They were members of your own family. They were better men than you are.
14 " 'So now I am about to strike your people down with a heavy blow. I will strike down your sons, your wives and everything that belongs to you.
15 And you yourself will be very sick for a long time. The sickness will finally cause your insides to come out.' "
16 The Lord stirred up the anger of the Philistines against Jehoram. He also stirred up the anger of the Arabs. They lived near the people of Cush.
17 The Philistines and Arabs attacked Judah. They went in and carried off all of the goods they found in the king's palace. They also took his sons and wives. The only son he had left was Ahaziah. He was the youngest son.
18 After all of that, the Lord made Jehoram very sick. He couldn't be healed.
19 After he had been sick for two years, the sickness caused his insides to come out. He died in great pain. His people didn't make a fire in his honor, as they had done for the kings who ruled before him.
20 Jehoram was 32 years old when he became king. He ruled in Jerusalem for eight years. No one was sorry when he passed away. His body was buried in the City of David. But it wasn't placed in the tombs of the kings.

2 And he had brethren H251 the sons H1121 of Jehoshaphat H3092 , Azariah H5838 , and Jehiel H3171 , and Zechariah H2148 , and Azariah H5838 , and Michael H4317 , and Shephatiah H8203 : all H3605 NMS these H428 PMP were the sons H1121 of Jehoshaphat H3092 king H4428 NMS of Israel H3478 LMS .
3 And their father H1 CMS-3MP gave H5414 W-VQQ3MS them great H7227 AFP gifts H4979 of silver H3701 , and of gold H2091 , and of precious things H4030 , with H5973 PREP fenced H4694 cities H5892 in Judah H3063 : but the kingdom H4467 gave H5414 VQQ3MS he to Jehoram H3088 ; because H3588 CONJ he H1931 PPRO-3MS was the firstborn H1060 D-NMS .
4 Now when Jehoram H3088 was risen up H6965 W-VQY3MS to H5921 PREP the kingdom H4467 of his father H1 CMS-3MS , he strengthened himself H2388 , and slew H2026 all H3605 NMS his brethren H251 NMP-3MS with the sword H2719 , and divers also H1571 W-CONJ of the princes H8269 of Israel H3478 LMS .
5 Jehoram H3088 was thirty H7970 MMP and two H8147 W-OFD years H8141 NFS old H1121 when he began to reign H4427 , and he reigned H4427 eight H8083 years H8141 NFP in Jerusalem H3389 .
6 And he walked H1980 W-VQY3MS in the way H1870 B-NMS of the kings H4428 CMP of Israel H3478 , like as H834 K-RPRO did H6213 W-VQY3MS the house H1004 CMS of Ahab H256 : for H3588 CONJ he had H1961 VQQ3FS the daughter H1323 CFS of Ahab H256 to wife H802 NFS : and he wrought H6213 W-VQY3MS that which was evil H7451 in the eyes H5869 B-CMP of the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS .
7 Howbeit the LORD H3068 EDS would H14 not H3808 W-NPAR destroy H7843 the house H1004 CMS of David H1732 , because of H4616 L-CONJ the covenant H1285 D-NFS that H834 RPRO he had made H3772 with David H1732 , and as H834 RPRO he promised H559 VQQ3MS to give H5414 L-VQFC a light H5216 to him and to his sons H1121 forever H3117 D-NMP .
8 In his days H3117 the Edomites H123 revolted H6586 from under H8478 M-CFS the dominion H3027 CFS of Judah H3063 , and made H4427 themselves a king H4428 NMS .
9 Then Jehoram H3088 went forth H5674 with H5973 PREP his princes H8269 CMP-3MS , and all H3605 W-CMS his chariots H7393 with H5973 PREP-3MS him : and he rose up H1961 W-VQY3MS by night H3915 GMS , and smote H5221 W-VHY3MS the Edomites H123 which compassed H5437 D-VQPMS him in , and the captains H8269 CMP-3MS of the chariots H7393 .
10 So the Edomites H123 revolted H6586 from under H8478 M-CFS the hand H3027 CFS of Judah H3063 unto H5704 PREP this H2088 D-PMS day H3117 D-AMS . The same H1931 time H6256 also did Libnah H3841 revolt H6586 from under H8478 M-CFS his hand H3027 CFS-3MS ; because H3588 CONJ he had forsaken H5800 VQQ3MS the LORD H3068 EDS God H430 CDP of his fathers H1 .
11 Moreover H1571 CONJ he H1931 PPRO-3MS made H6213 VQQ3MS high places H1116 in the mountains H2022 of Judah H3063 , and caused the inhabitants H3427 of Jerusalem H3389 to commit fornication H2181 , and compelled H5080 Judah H3063 thereto .
12 And there came H935 W-VQY3MS a writing H4385 to H413 PREP-3MS him from Elijah H452 the prophet H5030 , saying H559 L-VQFC , Thus H3541 saith H559 VQQ3MS the LORD H3068 EDS God H430 CDP of David H1732 thy father H1 NMS , Because H8478 NMS thou hast not H3808 ADV walked H1980 in the ways H1870 of Jehoshaphat H3092 thy father H1 NMS , nor in the ways H1870 of Asa H609 king H4428 NMS of Judah H3063 ,
13 But hast walked H1980 W-VQQ3FS in the way H1870 B-NMS of the kings H4428 CMP of Israel H3478 , and hast made Judah H3063 and the inhabitants H3427 of Jerusalem H3389 to go a whoring H2181 , like to the whoredoms H2181 of the house H1004 CMS of Ahab H256 , and also H1571 W-CONJ hast slain H2026 thy brethren H251 CMP-2MS of thy father H1 NMS \'s house H1004 CMS , which were better H2896 than H4480 PREP-2MS thyself :
14 Behold H2009 IJEC , with a great H1419 AFS plague H4046 will the LORD H3068 EDS smite H5062 thy people H5971 , and thy children H1121 , and thy wives H802 , and all H3605 WB-CMS thy goods H7399 :
15 And thou H859 W-PPRO-2MS shalt have great H7227 AMP sickness H2483 by disease H4245 of thy bowels H4578 , until H5704 PREP thy bowels H4578 fall out H3318 by reason of H4480 PREP the sickness H2483 day H3117 NMP by H5921 PREP day H3117 NMP .
16 Moreover the LORD H3068 EDS stirred up H5782 against H5921 PREP Jehoram H3088 the spirit H7307 NFS of the Philistines H6430 , and of the Arabians H6163 , that H834 RPRO were near H5921 PREP the Ethiopians H3569 :
17 And they came up H5927 into Judah H3063 , and broke into H1234 it , and carried away H7617 all H3605 NMS the substance H7399 that was found H4672 in the king H4428 D-NMS \'s house H1004 , and his sons H1121 CMP-3MS also H1571 W-CONJ , and his wives H802 ; so that there was never H3808 W-NPAR a son H1121 NMS left H7604 VNQ3MS him , save H518 PART Jehoahaz H3059 , the youngest H6996 of his sons H1121 .
18 And after H310 all H3605 NMS this H2063 DPRO the LORD H3068 EDS smote H5062 him in his bowels H4578 B-CMP-3MS with an incurable H369 disease H2483 .
19 And it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS , that in process of time H3117 L-NMP , after the end H6256 of two H8147 ONUM years H3117 , his bowels H4578 fell out H3318 by reason of H5973 PREP his sickness H2483 : so he died H4191 W-VQY3MS of sore H7451 AMP diseases H8463 . And his people H5971 made H6213 VQQ3MP no H3808 W-NPAR burning H8316 for him , like the burning H8316 of his fathers H1 .
20 Thirty H7970 MMP and two H8147 W-OFD years old H1121 was H1961 VQQ3MS he when he began to reign H4427 , and he reigned H4427 in Jerusalem H3389 eight H8083 years H8141 NFP , and departed H1980 W-VQY3MS without H3808 W-NPAR being desired H2532 . Howbeit they buried H6912 him in the city H5892 of David H1732 , but not H3808 W-NPAR in the sepulchers H6913 of the kings H4428 .
