1 Kings 21:1 (NIRV) New International Reader's Version

1 Some time later King Ahab wanted a certain vineyard. It belonged to Naboth from Jezreel. The vineyard was in Jezreel. It was close to the palace of Ahab, the king of Samaria.
2 Ahab said to Naboth, "Let me have your vineyard. It's close to my palace. I want to use it for a vegetable garden. I'll trade you a better vineyard for it. Or, if you prefer, I'll pay you what it's worth."
3 But Naboth replied, "May the Lord keep me from giving you the land my family handed down to me."
4 So Ahab went home. He was angry. He was in a bad mood because of what Naboth from Jezreel had said. He had told him, "I won't give you the land my family handed down to me." So Ahab lay on his bed. He was in a very bad mood. He wouldn't even eat anything.
5 His wife Jezebel came in. She asked him, "Why are you in such a bad mood? Why won't you eat anything?"
6 He answered her, "Because I spoke to Naboth from Jezreel. I said, 'Sell me your vineyard. Or, if you prefer, I'll give you another vineyard in its place.' But he said, 'I won't sell you my vineyard.' "
7 His wife Jezebel said, "Is this how the king of Israel acts? Get up! Eat something! Cheer up. I'll get you the vineyard of Naboth from Jezreel."
8 So she wrote some letters in Ahab's name. She stamped them with his seal. Then she sent them to the elders and nobles who lived in the city where Naboth lived.
9 In those letters she wrote, "Announce a day when people are supposed to go without eating. Have Naboth sit in an important place among the people.
10 But put two worthless and evil men in seats across from him. Have them witness to the fact that he has called down curses on God and the king. Then take him out of the city. Kill him by throwing stones at him."
11 So the elders and nobles who lived in that city did what Jezebel wanted. They did everything she directed in the letters she had written to them.
12 They announced a day of fasting. They had Naboth sit in an important place among the people.
13 Then two worthless and evil men came and sat across from him. They brought charges against Naboth in front of the people. The two men said, "Naboth has called down curses on God and the king." So they took him outside the city. They killed him by throwing stones at him.
14 Then they sent a message to Jezebel. They said, "Naboth is dead. We killed him by throwing stones at him."
15 Jezebel heard that Naboth had been killed. As soon as she heard it, she said to Ahab, "Get up. Take over the vineyard of Naboth from Jezreel. It's the one he wouldn't sell to you. He isn't alive anymore. He's dead."
16 Ahab heard that Naboth was dead. So he got up. He went down to take over Naboth's vineyard.
17 Then a message from the Lord came to Elijah, who was from Tishbe. It said,
18 "Go down to see Ahab, the king of Israel. He rules in Samaria. You will find him in Naboth's vineyard. He has gone there to take it over.
19 Tell him, 'The Lord says, "Haven't you murdered a man? Haven't you taken over his property?" ' Then tell him, 'The Lord says, "Dogs licked up Naboth's blood. In that same place dogs will lick up your blood. Yes, I said your blood!" ' "
20 Ahab said to Elijah, "My enemy! You have found me!" "I have found you," he answered. "That's because you gave yourself over to do evil things. You did what was evil in the sight of the Lord.
21 So the Lord says, 'I am going to bring horrible trouble on you. I will destroy your children after you. I will cut off every male in Israel who is related to you. It does not matter whether they are slaves or free.
22 I will make your royal house like the house of Jeroboam, the son of Nebat. I will make it like the house of Baasha, the son of Ahijah. You have made me very angry. You have caused Israel to commit sin.'
23 "The Lord also says, 'Dogs will eat up Jezebel near the wall of Jezreel.'
24 "Some of the people who belong to Ahab will die in the city. Dogs will eat them up. Others will die in the country. The birds of the air will eat them."
25 There was never anyone like Ahab. He gave himself over to do what was evil in the sight of the Lord. His wife Jezebel talked him into it.
26 He acted in the most evil way. He worshiped statues of gods. He was like the Amorites. The Lord drove them out to make room for Israel.
27 When Ahab heard what Elijah had said, he tore his clothes. He put on black clothes. He went without eating. He even slept in his clothes. He went around looking sad.
28 Then a message from the Lord came to Elijah, who was from Tishbe. It said,
29 "Have you seen how Ahab has made himself low in my sight? Because he has done that, I will not bring trouble on him while he lives. But I will bring it on his royal house when his son is king."
1 And it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS after H310 ADV these H428 D-DPRO-3MP things H1697 AMP , that Naboth H5022 the Jezreelite H3158 had H1961 VQQ3MS a vineyard H3754 , which H834 RPRO was in Jezreel H3157 , hard H681 by the palace H1964 CMS of Ahab H256 king H4428 NMS of Samaria H8111 .
2 And Ahab H256 spoke H1696 W-VPY3MS unto H413 PREP Naboth H5022 , saying H559 L-VQFC , Give H5414 UNKN me thy vineyard H3754 , that I may have H1961 it for a garden H1588 L-CMS of herbs H3419 , because H3588 CONJ it H1931 PPRO-3MS is near unto H7138 AMS my house H1004 CMS-1MS : and I will give H5414 UNKN thee for H8478 PREP-3MS it a better H2896 AMS vineyard H3754 than H4480 M-PREP-3MS it ; or , if H518 PART it seem good to thee H2895 , I will give H5414 UNKN thee the worth H4242 of it H2088 in money H3701 .
3 And Naboth H5022 said H559 W-VQY3MS to H413 PREP Ahab H256 , The LORD H3068 forbid H2486 IJEC-3FS it me , that I should give H5414 the inheritance H5159 of my fathers H1 unto thee .
4 And Ahab H256 came H935 W-VQY3MS into H413 PREP his house H1004 NMS-3MS heavy H5620 and displeased H2198 because H5921 PREP of the word H1697 D-NMS which H834 RPRO Naboth H5022 the Jezreelite H3158 had spoken H1696 VPQ3MS to H413 PREP-3MS him : for he had said H559 W-VQY3MS , I will not H3808 ADV give H5414 VQY1MS thee the inheritance H5159 of my fathers H1 . And he laid him down H7901 W-VQY3MS upon H5921 PREP his bed H4296 , and turned away H5437 his face H6440 CMP-3MS , and would eat H398 VQQ3MS no H3808 ADV bread H3899 NMS .
5 But Jezebel H348 his wife H802 CFS-3MS came H935 W-VQY3FS to H413 PREP-3MS him , and said H1696 unto H413 PREP-3MS him , Why H4100 IPRO is thy spirit H7307 so sad H5620 , that thou eatest H398 no H369 bread H3899 NMS ?
6 And he said H1696 W-VPY3MS unto H413 PREP her , Because H3588 CONJ I spoke H1696 VPY1MS unto H413 PREP Naboth H5022 the Jezreelite H3158 , and said H559 W-VQY3MS unto him , Give H5414 me thy vineyard H3754 for money H3701 ; or H176 CONJ else , if H518 PART it please H2654 thee H859 PPRO-2MS , I will give H5414 thee another vineyard H3754 for H8478 PREP-3MS it : and he answered H559 W-VQY3MS , I will not H3808 ADV give H5414 VQY1MS thee my vineyard H3754 .
7 And Jezebel H348 his wife H802 CFS-3MS said H559 W-VQY3FS unto H413 PREP-3MS him , Dost thou H859 PPRO-2MS now H6258 ADV govern H6213 VQY2MS the kingdom H4410 of Israel H3478 ? arise H6965 VQI2MS , and eat H398 bread H3899 NMS , and let thine heart H3820 CMS-2MS be merry H3190 : I H589 PPRO-1MS will give H5414 VQY1MS thee the vineyard H3754 of Naboth H5022 the Jezreelite H3158 .
8 So she wrote H3789 letters H5612 in Ahab H256 \'s name H8034 B-CMS , and sealed H2856 them with his seal H2368 , and sent H7971 the letters H5612 unto H413 PREP the elders H2205 and to H413 PREP the nobles H2715 that H834 RPRO were in his city H5892 , dwelling H3427 with H854 PREP Naboth H5022 .
9 And she wrote H3789 in the letters H5612 , saying H559 L-VQFC , Proclaim H7121 a fast H6685 NMS , and set H3427 Naboth H5022 on high H7218 B-NMS among the people H5971 D-NMS :
10 And set H3427 two H8147 ONUM men H376 , sons H1121 of Belial H1100 , before H5048 PREP-3MS him , to bear witness against H5749 him , saying H559 L-VQFC , Thou didst blaspheme H1288 VPQ2MS God H430 EDP and the king H4428 . And then carry him out H3318 , and stone H5619 him , that he may die H4191 .
11 And the men H376 CMP of his city H5892 , even the elders H2205 and the nobles H2715 who H834 RPRO were the inhabitants H3427 in his city H5892 , did H6213 W-VQY3MP as H834 RPRO Jezebel H348 had sent H7971 unto H413 PREP-3MP them , and as H834 RPRO it was written H3789 in the letters H5612 which H834 RPRO she had sent H7971 unto H413 them .
12 They proclaimed H7121 a fast H6685 NMS , and set H3427 Naboth H5022 on high H7218 B-NMS among the people H5971 D-NMS .
13 And there came in H935 W-VQY3MP two H8147 ONUM men H376 D-NMP , children H1121 of Belial H1100 , and sat H3427 W-VQY3MP before H5048 PREP-3MS him : and the men H376 CMP of Belial H1100 witnessed against H5749 him , even against Naboth H5022 , in the presence H5048 of the people H5971 , saying H559 L-VQFC , Naboth H5022 did blaspheme H1288 VPQ3MS God H430 EDP and the king H4428 . Then they carried him forth H3318 out of the city H5892 L-NMS , and stoned H5619 him with stones H68 , that he died H4191 W-VQY3MS .
14 Then they sent H7971 to H413 PREP Jezebel H348 , saying H559 L-VQFC , Naboth H5022 is stoned H5619 , and is dead H4191 W-VQY3MS .
15 And it came to pass H1961 W-VPY3MS , when Jezebel H348 heard H8085 that H3588 CONJ Naboth H5022 was stoned H5619 , and was dead H4191 , that Jezebel H348 said H559 W-VQY3FS to H413 PREP Ahab H256 , Arise H6965 VQI2MS , take possession H3423 of the vineyard H3754 of Naboth H5022 the Jezreelite H3158 , which H834 RPRO he refused H3985 to give H5414 thee for money H3701 : for H3588 CONJ Naboth H5022 is not H369 NPAR alive H2416 AMS , but H3588 CONJ dead H4191 .
16 And it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS , when Ahab H256 heard H8085 that H3588 CONJ Naboth H5022 was dead H4191 , that Ahab H256 rose up H6965 W-VQY3MS to go down H3381 to H413 PREP the vineyard H3754 of Naboth H5022 the Jezreelite H3158 , to take possession H3423 of it .
17 And the word H1697 CMS of the LORD H3068 EDS came H1961 W-VQY3MS to H413 PREP Elijah H452 the Tishbite H8664 , saying H559 L-VQFC ,
18 Arise H6965 VQI2MS , go down H3381 to meet H7121 Ahab H256 king H4428 NMS of Israel H3478 , which H834 RPRO is in Samaria H8111 : behold H2009 IJEC , he is in the vineyard H3754 of Naboth H5022 , whither H834 RPRO he is gone down H3381 VQQ3MS to possess H3423 it .
19 And thou shalt speak H1696 unto H413 PREP-3MS him , saying H559 L-VQFC , Thus H3541 saith H559 VQQ3MS the LORD H3068 EDS , Hast thou killed H7523 , and also H1571 W-CONJ taken possession H3423 ? And thou shalt speak H1696 unto H413 PREP-3MS him , saying H559 L-VQFC , Thus H3541 saith H559 VQQ3MS the LORD H3068 EDS , In the place H4725 B-CMS where H834 RPRO dogs H3611 licked H3952 the blood H1818 CMS of Naboth H5022 shall dogs H3611 lick H3952 thy blood H1818 , even H1571 CONJ thine H859 PPRO-2MS .
20 And Ahab H256 said H559 W-VQY3MS to H413 PREP Elijah H452 , Hast thou found H4672 me , O mine enemy H341 VQCMS-1MS ? And he answered H559 W-VQY3MS , I have found H4672 VQQ1MS thee : because H3282 ADV thou hast sold H4376 thyself to work H6213 L-VQFC evil H7451 in the sight H5869 B-CMP of the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS .
21 Behold H2009 , I will bring H935 evil H7451 AFS upon H413 PREP-2MS thee , and will take away H1197 thy posterity H310 , and will cut off H3772 from Ahab H256 him that pisseth H8366 against the wall H7023 , and him that is shut up H6113 and left H5800 in Israel H3478 ,
22 And will make H5414 thine house H1004 CMS-2MS like the house H1004 of Jeroboam H3379 the son H1121 CMS of Nebat H5028 , and like the house H1004 of Baasha H1201 the son H1121 CMS of Ahijah H281 , for H413 PREP the provocation H3708 wherewith H834 RPRO thou hast provoked me to anger H3707 , and made Israel to sin H2398 .
23 And of Jezebel H348 also H1571 W-CONJ spoke H1696 VPQ3MS the LORD H3068 EDS , saying H559 L-VQFC , The dogs H3611 shall eat H398 Jezebel H348 by the wall H2426 of Jezreel H3157 .
24 Him that dieth H4191 of Ahab H256 in the city H5892 BD-NFS the dogs H3611 shall eat H398 ; and him that dieth H4191 in the field H7704 B-NMS shall the fowls H5775 NMS of the air H8064 D-AMD eat H398 .
25 But H7535 ADV there was H1961 VQQ3MS none H3808 ADV like unto Ahab H256 , which H834 RPRO did sell himself H4376 to work H6213 L-VQFC wickedness H7451 in the sight H5869 B-CMP of the LORD H3068 EDS , whom H834 RPRO Jezebel H348 his wife H802 stirred up H5496 .
26 And he did very H3966 ADV abominably H8581 in following H1980 L-VQFC idols H1544 , according to all H3605 K-NMS things as H834 RPRO did H6213 VQQ3MP the Amorites H567 D-TMS , whom H834 RPRO the LORD H3068 EDS cast out H3423 before H6440 M-CMP the children H1121 of Israel H3478 LMS .
27 And it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS , when Ahab H256 heard H8085 those H428 D-DPRO-3MP words H1697 AMP , that he rent H7167 W-VQY3MS his clothes H899 , and put H7760 sackcloth H8242 NMS upon H5921 PREP his flesh H1320 CMS-3MS , and fasted H6684 , and lay H7901 W-VQY3MS in sackcloth H8242 , and went H1980 softly H328 .
28 And the word H1697 CMS of the LORD H3068 EDS came H1961 W-VPY3MS to H413 PREP Elijah H452 the Tishbite H8664 , saying H559 L-VQFC ,
29 Seest H7200 thou how H3588 CONJ Ahab H256 humbleth himself H3665 before H6440 me ? because H3282 ADV he humbleth himself H3665 before H6440 M-CMP-1MS me , I will not H3808 ADV bring H935 the evil H7451 in his days H3117 : but in his son H1121 \'s days H3117 B-CMP will I bring H935 the evil H7451 D-AFS upon H5921 PREP his house H1004 CMS-3MS .
