2 Kings 22:1 (NIRV) New International Reader's Version

1 Josiah was eight years old when he became king. He ruled in Jerusalem for 31 years. His mother's name was Jedidah. She was the daughter of Adaiah. She was from Bozkath.
2 Josiah did what was right in the eyes of the Lord. He lived the way King David had lived. He didn't turn away from it to the right or the left.
3 King Josiah sent his secretary Shaphan to the Lord's temple. It was in the 18th year of Josiah's rule. Shaphan was the son of Azaliah. Azaliah was the son of Meshullam. Josiah said,
4 "Go up to the high priest Hilkiah. Have him add up the money that has been brought into the Lord's temple. Those who guard the doors have collected it from the people.
5 "Have them put all of the money in the care of the men who have been put in charge of the work on the Lord's temple. Have them pay the workers who repair it.
6 Have them pay the builders and those who work with wood. Have them pay those who lay the stones. Also have them buy lumber and blocks of stone to repair the temple.
7 "But they don't have to report how they use the money that is given to them. That's because they are completely honest."
8 The high priest Hilkiah spoke to the secretary Shaphan. He said, "I've found the Scroll of the Law in the Lord's temple." He gave it to Shaphan, who read it.
9 Then Shaphan went to King Josiah. He told him, "Your officials have paid out the money that was in the Lord's temple. They've put it in the care of the workers and directors there."
10 Shaphan continued, "The priest Hilkiah has given me a scroll." Shaphan read some of it to the king.
11 The king heard the words of the Scroll of the Law. When he did, he tore his royal robes.
12 He gave orders to the priest Hilkiah, Ahikam, Acbor, the secretary Shaphan and Asaiah. Ahikam was the son of Shaphan. Acbor was the son of Micaiah. And Asaiah was the king's attendant. Josiah commanded them,
13 "Go. Ask the Lord for advice. Ask him about what is written in this scroll that has been found. Do it for me. Also do it for the people and the whole nation of Judah. The Lord's anger is burning against us. That's because our people before us didn't obey the words of this scroll. They didn't do everything that is written there about us."
14 The priest Hilkiah went to speak to the prophet Huldah. So did Ahikam, Acbor, Shaphan and Asaiah. Huldah was the wife of Shallum. Shallum was the son of Tikvah. Tikvah was the son of Harhas. Shallum took care of the sacred robes. Huldah lived in the New Quarter of Jerusalem.
15 She said to them, "The Lord is the God of Israel. He says, 'Tell the man who sent you to me,
16 "The Lord says, 'I am going to bring horrible trouble on this place and its people. Everything that is written in the scroll the king of Judah has read will take place.
17 " ' " 'That is because the people have deserted me. They have burned incense to other gods. They have made me very angry because of the statues of gods their hands have made. So my anger will burn against this place. The fire of my anger will not be put out.' " '
18 "The king of Judah sent you to ask the Lord for advice. Tell him, 'The Lord is the God of Israel. He has a message for you about the things you heard. He says,
19 "Your heart was tender. You made yourself low in my sight. You heard what I spoke against this place and its people. I said they would be under a curse. I told them they would be destroyed. You tore your royal robes and sobbed. And I have heard you," announces the Lord.
20 " ' "You will join the members of your family who have already died. Your body will be buried in peace. Your eyes will not see all of the trouble I am going to bring on this place." ' " Huldah's answer was taken back to the king.

2 And he did H6213 W-VQY3MS that which was right H3477 in the sight H5869 B-CMP of the LORD H3068 EDS , and walked H1980 W-VQY3MS in all H3605 B-CMS the way H1870 NMS of David H1732 MMS his father H1 CMS-3MS , and turned not aside H3808 W-NPAR to the right hand H3225 NFS or to the left H8040 .
3 And it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS in the eighteenth H8083 year H8141 NFS of king H4428 Josiah H2977 , that the king H4428 D-NMS sent H7971 VQQ3MS Shaphan H8227 the son H1121 CMS of Azaliah H683 , the son H1121 CMS of Meshullam H4918 , the scribe H5608 , to the house H1004 CMS of the LORD H3068 EDS , saying H559 L-VQFC ,
4 Go up H5927 to H413 PREP Hilkiah H2518 the high H1419 D-AMS priest H3548 , that he may sum H8552 the silver H3701 which is brought H935 into the house H1004 CMS of the LORD H3068 EDS , which H834 RPRO the keepers H8104 of the door H5592 have gathered H622 of the people H5971 D-NMS :
5 And let them deliver H5414 it into H5921 PREP the hand H3027 CFS of the doers H6213 of the work H4399 , that have the oversight H6485 of the house H1004 of the LORD H3068 EDS : and let them give H5414 it to the doers H6213 of the work H4399 which H834 RPRO is in the house H1004 B-CMS of the LORD H3068 EDS , to repair H2388 the breaches H919 of the house H1004 ,
6 Unto carpenters H2796 , and builders H1129 , and masons H1443 , and to buy H7069 timber H6086 and hewn H4274 stone H68 to repair H2388 the house H1004 .
7 Howbeit H389 ADV there was no H3808 NADV reckoning H2803 made with H854 PREP-3MP them of the money H3701 that was delivered H5414 into H5921 PREP their hand H3027 , because H3588 CONJ they H1992 PPRO-3MP dealt H6213 faithfully H530 .
8 And Hilkiah H2518 the high H1419 D-AMS priest H3548 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H5921 PREP Shaphan H8227 the scribe H5608 , I have found H4672 VQQ1MS the book H5612 CMS of the law H8451 in the house H1004 B-CMS of the LORD H3068 EDS . And Hilkiah H2518 gave H5414 W-VQQ3MS the book H5612 to H413 PREP Shaphan H8227 , and he read H7121 it .
9 And Shaphan H8227 the scribe H5608 came H935 W-VQY3MS to H413 PREP the king H4428 D-NMS , and brought the king word again H7725 W-VHY3MS , and said H559 W-VQY3MS , Thy servants H5650 have gathered H5413 the money H3701 that was found H4672 in the house H1004 , and have delivered H5414 it into H5921 PREP the hand H3027 CFS of them that do H6213 the work H4399 , that have the oversight H6485 of the house H1004 CMS of the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS .
10 And Shaphan H8227 the scribe H5608 showed H5046 W-VHY3MS the king H4428 , saying H559 L-VQFC , Hilkiah H2518 the priest H3548 hath delivered H5414 VQQ3MS me a book H5612 CMS . And Shaphan H8227 read H7121 it before H6440 L-CMP the king H4428 .
11 And it came to pass H1961 W-VPY3MS , when the king H4428 D-NMS had heard H8085 the words H1697 CMP of the book H5612 CMS of the law H8451 , that he rent H7167 W-VQY3MS his clothes H899 .
12 And the king H4428 D-NMS commanded H6680 W-VPY3MS Hilkiah H2518 the priest H3548 , and Ahikam H296 the son H1121 of Shaphan H8227 , and Achbor H5907 the son H1121 of Michaiah H4320 , and Shaphan H8227 the scribe H5608 , and Asahiah H6222 a servant H5650 of the king H4428 D-NMS \'s , saying H559 L-VQFC ,
13 Go H1980 VQI2MP ye , inquire H1875 of the LORD H3068 EDS for H1157 W-PREP me , and for H1157 W-PREP the people H5971 , and for H1157 W-PREP all H3605 NMS Judah H3063 , concerning H5921 PREP the words H1697 CMP of this H2088 D-PMS book H5612 that is found H4672 : for H3588 CONJ great H1419 AFS is the wrath H2534 of the LORD H3068 EDS that H834 RPRO is kindled H3341 against us , because H5921 PREP our fathers H1 have not H3808 ADV hearkened H8085 VQQ3MP unto H5921 PREP the words H1697 CMP of this H2088 D-PMS book H5612 , to do H6213 L-VQFC according unto all H3605 NMS that which is written H3789 concerning H5921 PREP us .
14 So Hilkiah H2518 the priest H3548 , and Ahikam H296 , and Achbor H5907 , and Shaphan H8227 , and Asahiah H6222 , went H1980 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP Huldah H2468 the prophetess H5031 , the wife H802 CFS of Shallum H7967 the son H1121 of Tikvah H8616 , the son H1121 of Harhas H2745 , keeper H8104 of the wardrobe H899 ; (now she H1931 dwelt H3427 in Jerusalem H3389 in the college H4932 ; ) and they communed H1696 with H413 PREP her .
15 And she said H559 W-VQY3FS unto H413 PREP-3MP them , Thus H3541 saith H559 VQQ3MS the LORD H3068 EDS God H430 CDP of Israel H3478 , Tell H559 the man H376 LD-NMS that H834 RPRO sent H7971 VQQ3MS you to H413 me ,
16 Thus H3541 saith H559 VQQ3MS the LORD H3068 EDS , Behold H2009 , I will bring H935 VHPMS evil H7451 AFS upon H413 PREP this H2088 D-PMS place H4725 D-NMS , and upon H5921 W-PREP the inhabitants H3427 thereof , even all H3605 NMS the words H1697 CMP of the book H5612 which H834 RPRO the king H4428 NMS of Judah H3063 hath read H7121 VQQ3MS :
17 Because H8478 NMS they have forsaken H5800 me , and have burned incense H6999 unto other H312 AMP gods H430 , that H4616 L-CONJ they might provoke me to anger H3707 with all H3605 the works H4639 M-CMS of their hands H3027 CFD-3MP ; therefore my wrath H2534 shall be kindled H3341 against this H2088 D-PMS place H4725 , and shall not H3808 W-NPAR be quenched H3518 .
18 But to H413 W-PREP the king H4428 NMS of Judah H3063 which sent H7971 you to inquire H1875 L-VQFC of the LORD H3068 EDS , thus H3541 shall ye say H559 VQY2MP to H413 PREP-3MS him , Thus H3541 saith H559 VQQ3MS the LORD H3068 EDS God H430 CDP of Israel H3478 , As touching the words H1697 AMP which H834 RPRO thou hast heard H8085 ;
19 Because H3282 ADV thine heart H3824 was tender H7401 , and thou hast humbled thyself H3665 before H6440 M-CMP the LORD H3068 EDS , when thou heardest H8085 VQQ1MS what H834 RPRO I spoke H1696 VPQ1MS against H5921 PREP this H2088 D-PMS place H4725 D-NMS , and against H5921 PREP the inhabitants H3427 thereof , that they should become H1961 a desolation H8047 and a curse H7045 , and hast rent H7167 thy clothes H899 CMP-2MS , and wept H1058 before H6440 me ; I H595 PPRO-1MS also H1571 W-CONJ have heard H8085 VQQ1MS thee , saith H5002 the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS .
20 Behold H2009 therefore H3651 L-ADV , I will gather H622 thee unto H5921 PREP thy fathers H1 , and thou shalt be gathered H622 into H413 PREP thy grave H6913 in peace H7965 ; and thine eyes H5869 CMD-2MS shall not H3808 W-NPAR see H7200 all H3605 the evil H7451 D-AFS which H834 RPRO I H589 PPRO-1MS will bring H935 VHPMS upon H5921 PREP this H2088 D-PMS place H4725 D-NMS . And they brought H7725 the king H4428 D-NMS word H1697 again .
