Joshua 6:1 (NIRV) New International Reader's Version

1 The gates of Jericho were shut tight and guarded closely because of the people of Israel. No one went out. No one came in.
2 Then the Lord spoke to Joshua. He said, "I have handed Jericho over to you. I have also handed its king and its fighting men over to you.
3 "March around the city once with all of your fighting men. In fact, do it for six days.
4 Have seven priests get trumpets that are made out of rams' horns. They must carry them in front of the ark. On the seventh day, march around the city seven times. Have the priests blow the trumpets as you march.
5 "You will hear them blow a long blast on the trumpets. When you do, have all of the men give a loud shout. The wall of the city will fall down. Then the whole army will go up to the city. Every man will go straight in."
6 So Joshua, the son of Nun, called for the priests. He said to them, "Go and get the ark of the covenant of the Lord. I want seven of you to carry trumpets in front of it."
7 He gave an order to the men. He said, "Move out! March around the city. Some of the fighting men must march in front of the ark of the Lord."
8 When Joshua had spoken to the men, the seven priests went forward. They were carrying the seven trumpets as they marched in front of the ark of the Lord. They were blowing the trumpets. The ark of the Lord's covenant was carried behind the priests.
9 Some of the fighting men marched ahead of the priests who were blowing the trumpets. The others followed behind the ark and guarded all of them. That whole time the priests were blowing the trumpets.
10 But Joshua had given an order to the fighting men. He had said, "Don't give a war cry. Don't raise your voices. Don't say a word until the day I tell you to shout. Then shout!"
11 So he had the ark of the Lord carried around the city once. Then the men returned to camp. They spent the night there.
12 Joshua got up early the next morning. The priests went and got the ark of the Lord.
13 The seven priests who were carrying the seven trumpets started out. They marched in front of the ark of the Lord. They blew the trumpets. Some of the fighting men marched ahead of them. The others followed behind the ark and guarded all of them. The priests kept blowing the trumpets.
14 On the second day they marched around the city once. Then the men returned to camp. They did all of those things for six days.
15 On the seventh day, they got up at sunrise. They marched around the city, just as they had done before. But on that day they went around it seven times.
16 On the seventh time around, the priests blew a long blast on the trumpets. Then Joshua gave a command to the men. He said, "Shout! The Lord has given you the city!
17 The city and everything that is in it must be set apart to the Lord in a special way to be destroyed. But the prostitute Rahab and all those who are with her in her house must be spared. That's because she hid the spies we sent.
18 "But keep away from the things that have been set apart to the Lord. If you take any of them, you will be destroyed. And you will bring trouble on the camp of Israel. You will cause it to be destroyed.
19 All of the silver and gold is holy. It is set apart to the Lord. So are all of the articles that are made out of bronze and iron. All of those things must be added to the treasures that are kept in the Lord's house."
20 The priests blew the trumpets. As soon as the fighting men heard the sound, they gave a loud shout. Then the wall fell down. Every man charged straight in. So they took the city.
21 They set it apart to the Lord in a special way to be destroyed. They destroyed every living thing in it with their swords. They killed men and women. They wiped out young people and old people. They destroyed cattle, sheep and donkeys.
22 Then Joshua spoke to the two men who had gone in to check out the land. He said, "Go into the prostitute's house. Bring her out. Also bring out everyone who is with her. That's what you promised her you would do when you took an oath."
23 So the young men who had checked out the land went into Rahab's house. They brought her out along with her parents and brothers. They brought out everyone else who was there with her. They put them in a place that was outside the camp of Israel.
24 Then they burned the whole city and everything that was in it. But they added the silver and gold to the treasures that were kept in the Lord's house. They also put there the articles that were made out of bronze and iron.
25 But Joshua spared the prostitute Rahab. He spared her family. He also spared everyone else who was in the house with her. He did it because she hid the spies he had sent to Jericho. Rahab lives among the people of Israel to this very day.
26 At that time Joshua took an oath and called down a curse. He said, "May the man who tries to rebuild this city of Jericho be under the Lord's curse. "If he lays its foundations, it will cost the life of his oldest son. If he sets up its gates, it will cost the life of his youngest son."
27 So the Lord was with Joshua. And Joshua became famous everywhere in the land.
1 Now Jericho H3405 was straitly shut up H5462 because H6440 M-CMP of the children H1121 of Israel H3478 : none H369 NPAR went out H3318 , and none H369 W-NPAR came in H935 .
2 And the LORD H3068 EDS said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP Joshua H3091 , See H7200 VQI2MS , I have given H5414 VQQ1MS into thine hand H3027 Jericho H3405 , and the king H4428 thereof , and the mighty H1368 men of valor H2428 .
3 And ye shall compass H5437 the city H5892 D-GFS , all H3605 NMS ye men H376 CMP of war H4421 , and go round about H5362 the city H5892 D-GFS once H259 MFS . Thus H3541 shalt thou do H6213 six H8337 days H3117 NMP .
4 And seven H7651 W-MMS priests H3548 shall bear H5375 VQY3MP before H6440 L-CMP the ark H727 seven H7651 NUM-MS trumpets H7782 of rams\' horns H3104 : and the seventh H7637 D-ONUM day H3117 ye shall compass H5437 the city H5892 D-GFS seven H7651 MFS times H6471 NFP , and the priests H3548 shall blow H8628 with the trumpets H7782 .
5 And it shall come to pass H1961 W-VQQ3MS , that when they make a long blast H4900 with the ram H3104 \'s horn H7161 , and when ye hear H8085 the sound H6963 CMS of the trumpet H7782 , all H3605 CMS the people H5971 shall shout H7321 VHY3MP with a great H1419 AFS shout H8643 ; and the wall H2346 of the city H5892 D-GFS shall fall down H5307 flat H8478 CMP-3FS , and the people H5971 shall ascend up H5927 every man H376 NMS straight before H5048 him .
6 And Joshua H3091 the son H1121 of Nun H5126 called H7121 W-VQY3MS the priests H3548 , and said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP them , Take up H5375 the ark H727 of the covenant H1285 D-NFS , and let H5375 VQY3MP seven H7651 W-MMS priests H3548 bear H5375 seven H7651 NUM-MS trumpets H7782 of rams\' horns H3104 before H6440 L-CMP the ark H727 of the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS .
7 And he said H559 unto H413 PREP the people H5971 , Pass on H5674 , and compass H5437 the city H5892 D-GFS , and let him that is armed H2502 pass on H5674 VQY3MS before H6440 L-CMP the ark H727 of the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS .
8 And it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS , when Joshua H3091 had spoken H559 unto H413 PREP the people H5971 , that the seven H7651 W-MMS priests H3548 bearing H5375 the seven H7651 NUM-MS trumpets H7782 of rams\' horns H3104 passed on H5674 VQQ3MP before H6440 L-CMP the LORD H3068 EDS , and blew H8628 with the trumpets H7782 : and the ark H727 of the covenant H1285 NFS of the LORD H3068 EDS followed H1980 them .
9 And the armed men H2502 went H1980 before H6440 L-CMP the priests H3548 that blew H8628 with the trumpets H7782 , and the rearward H622 came H1980 after H310 PREP the ark H727 , the priests going on H1980 VQFA , and blowing H8628 with the trumpets H7782 .
10 And Joshua H3091 had commanded H6680 VPQ3MS the people H5971 , saying H559 L-VQFC , Ye shall not H3808 NADV shout H7321 , nor H3808 ADV make any noise H8085 with H854 your voice H6963 , neither H3808 W-NADV shall any word H1697 VQPMS proceed out H3318 VQY3MS of your mouth H6310 , until H5704 PREP the day H3117 NMS I bid H559 VQFC-1MS you shout H7321 ; then shall ye shout H7321 .
11 So the ark H727 of the LORD H3068 EDS compassed H5437 the city H5892 D-GFS , going about H5362 it once H259 MFS : and they came H935 W-VQY3MP into the camp H4264 , and lodged H3885 in the camp H4264 .
12 And Joshua H3091 rose early H7925 in the morning H1242 B-NMS , and the priests H3548 took up H5375 W-VQY3MP the ark H727 of the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS .
13 And seven H7651 W-MMS priests H3548 bearing H5375 seven H7651 NUM-MS trumpets H7782 of rams\' horns H3104 before H6440 L-CMP the ark H727 of the LORD H3068 EDS went on continually H1980 , and blew H8628 with the trumpets H7782 : and the armed men H2502 went H1980 VQFA before H6440 L-CMP them ; but the rearward H622 came H1980 after H310 ADV the ark H727 of the LORD H3068 EDS , the priests going on H1980 , and blowing H8628 with the trumpets H7782 .
14 And the second H8145 D-ONUM day H3117 B-AMS they compassed H5437 the city H5892 D-GFS once H259 OFS , and returned H7725 W-VUY3MP into the camp H4264 : so H3541 they did H6213 VQQ3MP six H8337 days H3117 NMP .
15 And it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS on the seventh H7637 D-ONUM day H3117 B-AMS , that they rose early H7925 about the dawning H5927 of the day H7837 , and compassed H5437 the city H5892 D-GFS after the same H2088 D-PMS manner H4941 seven H7651 MFS times H6471 NFP : only H7535 ADV on that H2088 D-PMS day H3117 B-AMS they compassed H5437 the city H5892 D-GFS seven H7651 MFS times H6471 .
16 And it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS at the seventh H7637 time H6471 , when the priests H3548 blew H8628 with the trumpets H7782 , Joshua H3091 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP the people H5971 , Shout H7321 ; for H3588 CONJ the LORD H3068 EDS hath given H5414 VQQ3MS you the city H5892 D-GFS .
17 And the city H5892 D-GFS shall be H1961 W-VQQ3FS accursed H2764 , even it H1931 PPRO-3FS , and all H3605 W-CMS that H834 RPRO are therein , to the LORD H3068 L-EDS : only H7535 ADV Rahab H7343 the harlot H2181 shall live H2421 , she H1931 PPRO-3FS and all H3605 W-CMS that H834 RPRO are with H854 her in the house H1004 , because H3588 CONJ she hid H2244 the messengers H4397 that H834 RPRO we sent H7971 .
18 And ye H859 PPRO-2MS , in any wise H7357 keep H8104 yourselves from H4480 PREP the accursed thing H2764 , lest H6435 ye make yourselves accursed H2763 , when ye take H3947 of H4480 PREP the accursed thing H2764 , and make H7760 the camp H4264 of Israel H3478 a curse H2764 , and trouble H5916 it .
19 But all H3605 W-CMS the silver H3701 NMS , and gold H2091 , and vessels H3627 of brass H5178 CFS and iron H1270 W-NMS , are consecrated H6944 unto the LORD H3068 L-EDS : they shall come H935 VQY3MS into the treasury H214 of the LORD H3068 EDS .
20 So the people H5971 shouted H7321 when the priests blew H8628 with the trumpets H7782 : and it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS , when the people H5971 heard H8085 the sound H6963 CMS of the trumpet H7782 , and the people H5971 shouted H7321 W-VHY3MP with a great H1419 AFS shout H8643 , that the wall H2346 fell down H5307 W-VQY3FS flat H8478 CMP-3FS , so that the people H5971 went up H5927 W-VHY3MS into the city H5892 , every man H376 NMS straight before H5048 PREP-3MS him , and they took H3920 the city H5892 D-GFS .
21 And they utterly destroyed H2763 all H3605 NMS that H834 RPRO was in the city H5892 BD-NFS , both man H376 M-NMS and woman H802 NFS , young H5288 and old H2205 PFS , and ox H7794 CMS , and sheep H7716 , and ass H2543 , with the edge H6310 L-CMS of the sword H2719 GFS .
22 But Joshua H3091 had said H559 VQQ3MS unto the two H8147 men H376 that had spied out H7270 the country H776 D-GFS , Go into H935 the harlot H2181 \'s house H1004 CMS , and bring out H3318 thence H8033 M-ADV the woman H802 D-NFS , and all H3605 NMS that H834 RPRO she hath , as H834 RPRO ye swore H7650 unto her .
23 And the young men H5288 D-NMP that were spies H7270 went in H935 W-VQY3MP , and brought out H3318 Rahab H7343 , and her father H1 , and her mother H517 , and her brethren H251 , and all H3605 NMS that H834 RPRO she had ; and they brought out H3318 all H3605 NMS her kindred H4940 , and left H5117 them without H2351 the camp H4264 of Israel H3478 LMS .
24 And they burnt H8313 the city H5892 with fire H784 , and all H3605 W-CMS that H834 RPRO was therein : only H7535 ADV the silver H3701 , and the gold H2091 , and the vessels H3627 of brass H5178 and of iron H1270 , they put H5414 into the treasury H214 of the house H1004 CMS of the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS .
25 And Joshua H3091 saved H2421 Rahab H7343 the harlot H2181 alive , and her father H1 \'s household H1004 CMS , and all H3605 NMS that H834 RPRO she had ; and she dwelleth H3427 in H7130 Israel H3478 even unto H5704 PREP this H2088 D-PMS day H3117 D-AMS ; because H3588 CONJ she hid H2244 the messengers H4397 , which H834 RPRO Joshua H3091 sent H7971 VQQ3MS to spy out H7270 Jericho H3405 .
26 And Joshua H3091 adjured H7650 them at that H1931 time H6256 , saying H559 L-VQFC , Cursed H779 VWQ3MS be the man H376 D-NMS before H6440 L-CMP the LORD H3068 EDS , that H834 RPRO riseth up H6965 VQY3MS and buildeth H1129 this H2063 D-DFS city H5892 D-GFS Jericho H3405 : he shall lay the foundation H3245 thereof in his firstborn H1060 , and in his youngest H6810 son shall he set up H5324 the gates H1817 of it .
27 So the LORD H3068 EDS was H1961 W-VQY3MS with H854 PREP Joshua H3091 ; and his fame H8089 was H1961 W-VQY3MS noised throughout all H3605 B-CMS the country H776 D-GFS .
