Luke 7:1 (NIRV) New International Reader's Version

1 Jesus finished saying all those things to the people. Then he entered Capernaum.
2 There the servant of a Roman commander was sick and about to die. His master thought highly of him.
3 The commander heard about Jesus. So he sent some elders of the Jews to him. He told them to ask Jesus to come and heal his servant.
4 They came to Jesus and begged him, "This man deserves to have you do this.
5 He loves our nation and has built our synagogue."
6 So Jesus went with them. When Jesus came near the house, the Roman commander sent friends to him. He told them to say, "Lord, don't trouble yourself. I am not good enough to have you come into my house.
7 That is why I did not even think I was fit to come to you. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed.
8 I myself am a man who is under authority. And I have soldiers who obey my orders. I tell this one, 'Go,' and he goes. I tell that one, 'Come,' and he comes. I say to my servant, 'Do this,' and he does it."
9 When Jesus heard this, he was amazed at him. He turned to the crowd that was following him. He said, "I tell you, even in Israel I have not found anyone whose faith is so strong."
10 Then the men who had been sent to Jesus returned to the house. They found that the servant was healed.
11 Some time later, Jesus went to a town called Nain. His disciples and a large crowd went along with him.
12 He approached the town gate. Just then, a dead person was being carried out. He was the only son of his mother. She was a widow. A large crowd from the town was with her.
13 When the Lord saw her, he felt sorry for her. So he said, "Don't cry."
14 Then he went up and touched the coffin. Those carrying it stood still. Jesus said, "Young man, I say to you, get up!"
15 The dead man sat up and began to talk. Then Jesus gave him back to his mother.
16 The people were all filled with wonder and praised God. "A great prophet has appeared among us," they said. "God has come to help his people."
17 This news about Jesus spread all through Judea and the whole country.
18 John's disciples told him about all these things. So he chose two of them.
19 He sent them to the Lord. They were to ask Jesus, "Are you the one who was supposed to come? Or should we look for someone else?"
20 The men came to Jesus. They said, "John the Baptist sent us to ask you, 'Are you the one who was supposed to come? Or should we look for someone else?' "
21 At that very time Jesus healed many people. They had illnesses, sicknesses and evil spirits. He also gave sight to many who were blind.
22 So Jesus replied to the messengers, "Go back to John. Tell him what you have seen and heard. Blind people receive sight. Disabled people walk. Those who have skin diseases are healed. Deaf people hear. Those who are dead are raised to life. And the good news is preached to those who are poor.
23 Blessed are those who do not give up their faith because of me."
24 So John's messengers left. Then Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John. He said, "What did you go out into the desert to see? Tall grass waving in the wind?
25 If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No. Those who wear fine clothes and have many expensive things are in palaces.
26 Then what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.
27 "He is the one written about in Scripture. It says, " 'I will send my messenger ahead of you. He will prepare your way for you.' --(Malachi 3:1)
28 I tell you, no one more important than John has ever been born. But the least important person in God's kingdom is more important than he is."
29 All the people who heard Jesus' words agreed that God's way was right. Even the tax collectors agreed. These people had all been baptized by John.
30 But the Pharisees and the authorities on the law did not accept God's purpose for themselves. They had not been baptized by John.
31 "What can I compare today's people to?" Jesus asked. "What are they like?
32 They are like children sitting in the market place and calling out to each other. They say, " 'We played a flute for you. But you didn't dance. We sang a funeral song. But you didn't cry.'
33 "That is how it has been with John the Baptist. When he came to you, he didn't eat bread or drink wine. And you say, 'He has a demon.'
34 But when the Son of Man came, he ate and drank as you do. And you say, 'This fellow is always eating and drinking far too much. He's a friend of tax collectors and "sinners." '
35 All who follow wisdom prove that wisdom is right."
36 One of the Pharisees invited Jesus to have dinner with him. So he went to the Pharisee's house. He took his place at the table.
37 There was a woman in that town who had lived a sinful life. She learned that Jesus was eating at the Pharisee's house. So she came with a special sealed jar of perfume.
38 She stood behind Jesus and cried at his feet. She began to wet his feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair. She kissed them and poured perfume on them.
39 The Pharisee who had invited Jesus saw this. He said to himself, "If this man were a prophet, he would know who is touching him. He would know what kind of woman she is. She is a sinner!"
40 Jesus answered him, "Simon, I have something to tell you." "Tell me, teacher," he said.
41 "Two people owed money to a certain lender. One owed him 500 silver coins. The other owed him 50 silver coins.
42 Neither of them had the money to pay him back. So he let them go without paying. Which of them will love him more?"
43 Simon replied, "I suppose the one who owed the most money." "You are right," Jesus said.
44 Then he turned toward the woman. He said to Simon, "Do you see this woman? I came into your house. You did not give me any water to wash my feet. But she wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair.
45 You did not give me a kiss. But this woman has not stopped kissing my feet since I came in.
46 You did not put any olive oil on my head. But she has poured perfume on my feet.
47 So I tell you this. Her many sins have been forgiven. She has loved a lot. But the one who has been forgiven little loves only a little."
48 Then Jesus said to her, "Your sins are forgiven."
49 The other guests began to talk about this among themselves. They said, "Who is this who even forgives sins?"
50 Jesus said to the woman, "Your faith has saved you. Go in peace."

10 And G2532 CONJ they that were sent G3992 V-APP-NPM , returning G5290 V-AAP-NPM to G1519 PREP the G3588 T-ASM house G3624 N-ASM , found G2147 V-2AAI-3P the G3588 T-ASM servant G1401 N-ASM whole G5198 V-PAP-ASM that had been sick G770 V-PAP-ASM .

12 Now G1161 CONJ when G5613 ADV he came nigh G1448 V-AAI-3S to the G3588 T-DSF gate G4439 N-DSF of G3588 T-GSF the G3588 T-GSF city G4172 N-GSF , behold G2400 V-2AAM-2S , there was a dead man G2348 V-RAP-NSM carried out G1580 V-IPI-3S , the only G3439 A-NSM son G5207 N-NSM of G3588 T-DSF his G3588 T-DSF mother G3384 N-DSF , and G2532 CONJ she G3778 D-NSF was G2258 V-IXI-3S a widow G5503 N-NSF : and G2532 CONJ much G2425 A-NSM people G3793 N-NSM of G3588 T-GSF the G3588 T-GSF city G4172 N-GSF was G2258 V-IXI-3S with G4862 PREP her G846 P-GSM .
13 And G2532 CONJ when the G3588 T-NSM Lord G2962 N-NSM saw G1492 V-2AAP-NSM her G846 P-ASF , he had compassion G4697 V-AOI-3S on G1909 PREP her G846 P-DSF , and G2532 CONJ said G2036 V-2AAI-3S unto her G846 P-DSF , Weep G2799 V-PAM-2S not G3361 PRT-N .
14 And G2532 CONJ he came G4334 V-2AAP-NSM and touched G680 V-ADI-3S the G3588 T-GSF bier G4673 N-GSF : and G1161 CONJ they that bare G941 V-PAP-NPM him stood still G2476 V-2AAI-3P . And G2532 CONJ he said G2036 V-2AAI-3S , Young man G3495 N-VSM , I say G3004 V-PAI-1S unto thee G4671 P-2DS , Arise G1453 V-APM-2S .
15 And G2532 CONJ he that was dead G3498 A-NSM sat up G339 V-AAI-3S , and G2532 CONJ began G756 V-ADI-3S to speak G2980 V-PAN . And G2532 CONJ he delivered G1325 V-AAI-3S him G846 P-ASM to his G3588 T-DSF mother G3384 N-DSF .
16 And G1161 CONJ there came a fear G5401 N-NSM on all G537 : and G2532 CONJ they G3588 T-ASM glorified G1392 V-IAI-3P God G2316 N-ASM , saying G3004 V-PAP-NPM , That G3754 CONJ a great G3173 A-NSM prophet G4396 N-NSM is risen up G1453 V-RPI-3S among G1722 PREP us G2254 P-1DP ; and G2532 CONJ , That G3588 T-NSM God G2316 N-NSM hath visited G1980 V-ADI-3S his G3588 T-ASM people G2992 N-ASM .

25 But G235 CONJ what G5101 I-ASN went ye out G1831 V-RAI-2P for to see G1492 V-2AAN ? A man G444 N-ASM clothed G294 V-RPP-ASM in G1722 PREP soft G3120 A-DPN raiment G2440 N-DPN ? Behold G2400 V-2AAM-2S , they G3588 T-NPM which are gorgeously appareled G2441 N-DSM , and G2532 CONJ live G5225 V-PAP-NPM delicately G5172 N-DSF , are G1526 V-PXI-3P in G1722 PREP kings\' courts G933 .
26 But G235 CONJ what G5101 I-ASN went ye out G1831 V-RAI-2P for to see G1492 V-2AAN ? A prophet G4396 N-ASM ? Yea G3483 PRT , I say G3004 V-PAI-1S unto you G5213 P-2DP , and G2532 CONJ much more G4055 than a prophet G4396 N-GSM .
27 This G3778 D-NSM is G2076 V-PXI-3S he , of G4012 PREP whom G3739 R-GSM it is written G1125 V-RPI-3S , Behold G2400 V-2AAM-2S , I G1473 P-1NS send G649 V-PAI-1S my G3588 T-ASM messenger G32 N-ASM before G4253 PREP thy G4675 P-2GS face G4383 N-GSN , which G3739 R-NSM shall prepare G2680 V-FAI-3S thy G3588 T-ASF way G3598 N-ASF before G1715 PREP thee G4675 P-2GS .
28 For G1063 CONJ I say G3004 V-PAI-1S unto you G5213 P-2DP , Among G1722 PREP those that are born G1084 A-DPM of women G1135 N-GPF there is G2076 V-PXI-3S not G3762 A-NSM a greater G3187 A-NSM-C prophet G4396 N-NSM than John G2491 N-GSM the G3588 T-GSM Baptist G910 N-GSM : but G1161 CONJ he that is least G3398 A-NSM-C in G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DSF kingdom G932 N-DSF of God G2316 N-GSM is G2076 V-PXI-3S greater G3187 A-NSM-C than he G846 P-GSM .
29 And G2532 CONJ all G3956 A-NSM the G3588 T-NSM people G2992 N-NSM that heard G191 V-AAP-NSM him , and G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-NPM publicans G5057 N-NPM , justified G1344 V-AAI-3P God G2316 N-ASM , being baptized G907 V-APP-NPM with the G3588 T-ASN baptism G908 N-ASN of John G2491 N-GSM .
30 But G1161 CONJ the G3588 T-NPM Pharisees G5330 N-NPM and G2532 CONJ lawyers G3544 A-NPM rejected G114 V-AAI-3P the G3588 T-ASF counsel G1012 N-ASF of God G2316 N-GSM against G1519 PREP themselves G1438 F-3APM , being not G3361 PRT-N baptized G907 V-APP-NPM of G5259 PREP him G846 P-GSM .
31 And G1161 the G3588 T-APM Lord G2962 said G2036 , Whereunto G5101 I-DSN then G3767 CONJ shall I liken G3666 V-FAI-1S the G3588 T-APM men G444 N-APM of G3588 T-GSF this G3588 T-GSF generation G1074 N-GSF ? and G2532 CONJ to what G5101 I-DSN are G1526 V-PXI-3P they like G3664 A-NPM ?
32 They are G1526 V-PXI-3P like unto G3664 A-NPM children G3813 N-DPN sitting G2521 V-PNP-DPN in G1722 PREP the marketplace G58 N-DSF , and G2532 CONJ calling G4377 V-PAP-DPM one to another G240 C-DPM , and G2532 CONJ saying G3004 V-PAP-DPM , We have piped G832 V-AAI-1P unto you G5213 P-2DP , and G2532 CONJ ye have not G3756 PRT-N danced G3738 V-ADI-2P ; we have mourned G2354 V-AAI-1P to you G5213 P-2DP , and G2532 CONJ ye have not G3756 PRT-N wept G2799 V-AAI-2P .
33 For G1063 CONJ John G2491 N-NSM the G3588 T-NSM Baptist G910 N-NSM came G2064 V-2RAI-3S neither G3383 CONJ eating G2068 V-PAP-NSM bread G740 N-ASM nor G3383 CONJ drinking G4095 V-PAP-NSM wine G3631 N-ASM ; and G2532 CONJ ye say G3004 V-PAI-2P , He hath G2192 V-PAI-3S a devil G1140 N-ASN .
34 The G3588 T-NSM Son G5207 N-NSM of man G444 N-GSM is come G2064 V-2RAI-3S eating G2068 V-PAP-NSM and G2532 CONJ drinking G4095 V-PAP-NSM ; and G2532 CONJ ye say G3004 V-PAI-2P , Behold G2400 V-2AAM-2S a gluttonous G5314 N-NSM man G444 N-NSM , and G2532 CONJ a winebibber G3630 N-NSM , a friend G5384 A-NSM of publicans G5057 N-GPM and G2532 CONJ sinners G268 A-GPM !
35 But G2532 CONJ wisdom G4678 N-NSF is justified G1344 V-API-3S of G575 PREP all G3956 A-GPN her G3588 T-GPN children G5043 N-GPN .
36 And G1161 CONJ one G5100 X-NSM of G3588 T-GPM the G3588 T-GPM Pharisees G5330 N-GPM desired G2065 V-IAI-3S him G846 P-ASM that G2443 CONJ he would eat G5315 V-2AAS-3S with G3326 PREP him G846 P-GSM . And G2532 CONJ he went G1525 V-2AAP-NSM into G1519 PREP the G3588 T-GSM Pharisee G5330 N-GSM \'s house G3614 N-ASF , and G2532 CONJ sat down to meat G347 V-API-3S .
37 And G2532 CONJ , behold G2400 V-2AAM-2S , a woman G1135 N-NSF in G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DSF city G4172 N-DSF , which G3748 R-NSF was G2258 V-IXI-3S a sinner G268 A-NSF , when she knew G1921 V-2AAP-NSF that G3754 CONJ Jesus sat at meat G345 V-PNI-3S in G1722 PREP the G3588 T-GSM Pharisee G5330 N-GSM \'s house G3614 N-DSF , brought G2865 V-AAP-NSF an alabaster box G211 N-ASN of ointment G3464 N-GSN ,
38 And G2532 CONJ stood G2476 V-2AAP-NSF at G3844 PREP his G3588 T-APM feet G4228 N-APM behind G3694 ADV him weeping G2799 V-PAP-NSF , and began G756 V-ADI-3S to wash G1026 V-PAN his G3588 T-APM feet G4228 N-APM with tears G1144 N-DPN , and G2532 CONJ did wipe G1591 V-IAI-3S them with the G3588 T-DPF hairs G2359 N-DPF of G3588 T-GSF her G3588 T-GSF head G2776 N-GSF , and G2532 CONJ kissed G2705 V-IAI-3S his G3588 T-APM feet G4228 N-APM , and G2532 CONJ anointed G218 V-IAI-3S them with the G3588 T-DSN ointment G3464 N-DSN .
