Hosea 8:1 (NIRV) New International Reader's Version

1 The Lord said to me, "Put a trumpet to your lips! Give a warning to my people! Assyria is like an eagle. It is ready to attack my land. My people have broken the covenant I made with them. They have refused to obey my law.
2 Israel shouts to me, 'We recognize you as our God!'
3 But they have turned away from what is good. So an enemy will chase them.
4 My people appoint kings I do not want. They choose princes without my permission. They use their silver and gold to make statues of gods. That is how they destroy themselves."
5 The Lord says, "People of Samaria, throw out your god that looks like a calf! My anger burns against you. How long will it be until you are able to remain faithful to me?
6 Your calf is not God. A skilled worker from Israel made it. But it will be broken to pieces."
7 The Lord says, "Worshiping other gods is like worshiping the wind. It is like planting worthless seeds. Assyria is like a windstorm. That is all my people will harvest. There are no heads of grain on the stems that will come up. So they will not produce any flour. Even if they did produce grain, the Assyrians would eat all of it up.
8 So the people of Israel are swallowed up. Now they are like a worthless pot to me among the nations.
9 They have gone up to Assyria for help. They are like a wild donkey that wanders around by itself. Ephraim's people have sold themselves to their Assyrian lovers.
10 They have sold themselves to the nations to get their help. But now I will gather them together. They will get weaker and weaker. The mighty kings of Assyria will crush them.
11 "Ephraim built many altars where they sacrificed sin offerings to other gods. So their altars have become places where they commit sin.
12 I wrote down many things in my law for their good. But they considered my laws as something strange.
13 They offer sacrifices to me. They eat the meat of the animals they bring. But I am not pleased with any of that. I will remember the evil things they have done. I will punish them for their sins. And they will return to Egypt.
14 Israel has forgotten the One who made them. They have built palaces for themselves. Judah has built forts in many towns. But I will send fire down on their cities. It will burn up their forts."

2 Israel H3478 LMS shall cry H2199 unto me , My God H430 , we know H3045 thee .
3 Israel H3478 hath cast off H2186 the thing that is good H2896 AMS : the enemy H341 VQPMS shall pursue H7291 him .
4 They H1992 PPRO-3MP have set up kings H4427 , but not H3808 W-NPAR by H4480 M-PREP-1MS me : they have made princes H8323 , and I knew H3045 it not H3808 W-NPAR : of their silver H3701 and their gold H2091 have they made H6213 VQQ3MP them idols H6091 , that H4616 L-CONJ they may be cut off H3772 .
5 Thy calf H5695 , O Samaria H8111 , hath cast thee off H2186 ; mine anger H639 CMS-1MS is kindled H2734 VQQ3MS against them : how long H5704 PREP will it be ere H3808 NADV they attain H3201 to innocency H5356 ?
6 For H3588 CONJ from Israel H3478 was it H1931 W-PPRO-3MS also : the workman H2796 made H6213 VQQ3MS-3MS it H1931 PPRO-3MS ; therefore it is not H3808 W-NPAR God H430 EDP : but H3588 CONJ the calf H5695 of Samaria H8111 shall be H1961 VQY3MS broken in pieces H7616 .
7 For H3588 CONJ they have sown H2232 VQY3MP the wind H7307 NFS , and they shall reap H7114 the whirlwind H5492 W-CFS-3FS : it hath no H369 ADV stalk H7054 : the bud H6780 shall yield H6213 no H1097 ADV meal H7058 : if so be H194 ADV it yield H6213 , the strangers H2114 shall swallow it up H1104 .
8 Israel H3478 is swallowed up H1104 : now H6258 ADV shall they be H1961 VQQ3MP among the Gentiles H1471 as a vessel H3627 wherein is no H369 ADV pleasure H2656 .
9 For H3588 CONJ they H1992 PPRO-3MP are gone up H5927 to Assyria H804 GFS , a wild ass H6501 NMS alone H909 by himself : Ephraim H669 hath hired H8566 lovers H158 .
10 Yea H1571 CONJ , though H3588 CONJ they have hired H8566 among the nations H1471 , now H6258 ADV will I gather H6908 them , and they shall sorrow H2490 a little H4592 for the burden H4853 of the king H4428 NMS of princes H8269 .
11 Because H3588 CONJ Ephraim H669 hath made many H7235 altars H4196 to sin H2398 L-VQFC , altars H4196 shall be H1961 VQQ3MP unto him to sin H2398 .
12 I have written H3789 to him the great things H7230 of my law H8451 , but they were counted H2803 as H3644 PREP a strange thing H2114 VQPMS .
13 They sacrifice H2076 flesh H1320 NMS for the sacrifices H2077 of mine offerings H1890 , and eat H398 it ; but the LORD H3068 EDS accepteth H7521 them not H3808 NADV ; now H6258 ADV will he remember H2142 their iniquity H5771 , and visit H6485 their sins H2403 : they H1992 PPRO-3MP shall return H7725 to Egypt H4714 EFS .
14 For Israel H3478 hath forgotten H7911 his Maker H6213 , and buildeth H1129 W-VQY3MS temples H1964 ; and Judah H3063 hath multiplied H7235 fenced H1219 cities H5892 GFP : but I will send H7971 a fire H784 CMS upon his cities H5892 , and it shall devour H398 the palaces H759 thereof .
