Joshua 9:1 (NIRV) New International Reader's Version

1 All of the kings who ruled west of the Jordan River heard about the battles Israel had won. That included the kings who ruled in the central hill country and the western hills. It also included those who ruled along the entire coast of the Mediterranean Sea all the way to Lebanon. They were the kings of the Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites.
2 They brought their armies together to fight against Joshua and Israel.
3 The people of Gibeon heard about what Joshua had done to Jericho and Ai.
4 So they decided to trick the people of Israel. They packed supplies as if they were going on a long trip. They loaded their donkeys with old sacks and old wineskins. The wineskins were cracked but had been mended.
5 The men put worn-out sandals on their feet. The sandals had been patched. The men also wore old clothes. All of the bread they took along was dry and moldy.
6 They went to Joshua in the camp at Gilgal. They spoke to him and the men of Israel. They said, "We've come from a country that's far away. Make a peace treaty with us."
7 The men of Israel spoke to the Hivites. They said, "But suppose you live close to us. If you do, we can't make a peace treaty with you."
8 "We'll serve you," they said to Joshua. But Joshua asked, "Who are you? Where do you come from?"
9 They answered, "We've come from a country that's very far away. We've come because the Lord your God is famous. We've heard reports about him. We've heard about everything he did in Egypt.
10 "We've heard about everything he did to Sihon and Og. They were the two kings of the Amorites. They ruled east of the Jordan River. Sihon was the king of Heshbon. Og was the king of Bashan. He ruled in Ashtaroth.
11 "Our elders and all of the people who are living in our country spoke to us. They said, 'Take supplies for your trip. Go and meet the people of Israel. Say to them, "We'll serve you. Make a peace treaty with us." '
12 "Look at our bread. It was warm when we packed it. We packed it at home on the day we left to come and see you. But look at how dry and moldy it is now.
13 When we filled these wineskins, they were new. But look at how cracked they are now. And our clothes and sandals are worn out because we've traveled so far."
14 The men of Israel looked over the supplies those men had brought. But they didn't ask the Lord what they should do.
15 Joshua made a peace treaty with the men who had come. He agreed to let them live. The leaders of the community took an oath to show that they agreed with the treaty.
16 The people of Israel made a peace treaty with the people of Gibeon. But three days later they heard that the people of Gibeon lived close to them.
17 So the people of Israel started out to go to the cities of those men. On the third day they came to Gibeon, Kephirah, Beeroth and Kiriath Jearim.
18 But they didn't attack those cities. That's because the leaders of the community had taken an oath and made a peace treaty with them. They had taken the oath in the name of the Lord, the God of Israel. The whole community told the leaders they weren't happy with them.
19 But all of the leaders answered, "We've made a peace treaty with them. We've taken an oath in the name of the Lord, the God of Israel. So we can't touch them now.
20 "But here is what we'll do to them. We'll let them live. Then the Lord's anger won't fall on us because we didn't keep the oath we took."
21 They continued, "Let them live. But let them cut wood and carry water for the whole community." So the leaders kept their promise to them.
22 Joshua sent for the people of Gibeon. He said, "Why did you trick us? You said, 'We live far away from you.' But in fact you live close to us.
23 So now you are under a curse. You will always serve us. You will always cut wood and carry water for the house of my God."
24 They answered Joshua, "We were clearly told what the Lord your God had commanded his servant Moses to do. He commanded him to give you the whole land. He also ordered him to wipe out all of its people to make room for you. So we were afraid you would kill us. That's why we tricked you.
25 We are now in your hands. Do to us what you think is good and right."
26 So Joshua saved the people of Gibeon. He didn't let the people of Israel kill them.
27 That day he made them cut wood and carry water. They had to serve the community of Israel. They also had to serve at the altar of the Lord at the place where he would choose to put it. And they still serve the people of Israel to this very day.
1 And it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS , when all H3605 CMS the kings H4428 which H834 RPRO were on this side H5676 Jordan H3383 D-EFS , in the hills H2022 , and in the valleys H8219 , and in all H3605 the coasts H2348 of the great H1419 D-AMS sea H3220 D-NMS over H413 PREP against H4136 Lebanon H3844 , the Hittite H2850 , and the Amorite H567 , the Canaanite H3669 , the Perizzite H6522 , the Hivite H2340 , and the Jebusite H2983 , heard H8085 thereof ;
2 That they gathered themselves H6908 together H3162 ADV-3MS , to fight H3898 with H5973 PREP Joshua H3091 and with H5973 Israel H3478 , with one H259 ONUM accord H6310 .
3 And when the inhabitants H3427 of Gibeon H1391 heard H8085 VQQ3MP what H834 RPRO Joshua H3091 had done H6213 VQQ3MS unto Jericho H3405 and to Ai H5857 ,
4 They H1992 PPRO-3MP did work H6213 W-VQY3MP wilily H6195 , and went H1980 W-VQY3MP and made as if they had been ambassadors H6737 , and took H3947 W-VQY3MP old H1087 sacks H8242 NMP upon their asses H2543 , and wine H3196 NMS bottles H4997 , old H1087 , and rent H1234 , and bound up H6887 ;
5 And old H1087 shoes H5275 and clouted H2921 upon their feet H7272 , and old H1087 garments H8008 upon H5921 PREP-3MP them ; and all H3605 W-CMS the bread H3899 NMS of their provision H6718 was dry H3001 and moldy H5350 .
6 And they went H1980 W-VQY3MP to H413 PREP Joshua H3091 unto H413 PREP the camp H4264 at Gilgal H1537 , and said H559 W-VQY3MP unto H413 PREP-3MS him , and to H413 PREP the men H376 NMS of Israel H3478 , We be come H935 from a far country H776 M-NFS : now H6258 W-ADV therefore make H3772 ye a league H1285 with us .
7 And the men H376 NMS of Israel H3478 said H559 unto H413 PREP the Hivites H2340 , Peradventure H194 ADV ye H859 PPRO-2MS dwell H3427 VQPMS among H7130 us ; and how H349 W-IJEC shall we make H3772 a league H1285 with you ?
8 And they said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP Joshua H3091 , We H587 are thy servants H5650 . And Joshua H3091 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP them , Who H4310 IPRO are ye H859 PPRO-2MS ? and from whence H370 WM-ADV come H935 ye ?
9 And they said H559 W-VQY3MP unto H413 PREP-3MS him , From a very far country H776 M-NFS thy servants H5650 are come H935 VQQ3MP because of the name H8034 of the LORD H3068 EDS thy God H430 CMP-2MS : for H3588 CONJ we have heard H8085 VQQ1MP the fame H8089 of him , and all H3605 NMS that H834 RPRO he did H6213 VQQ3MS in Egypt H4714 ,
10 And all H3605 NMS that H834 RPRO he did H6213 VQQ3MS to the two H8147 kings H4428 NMS of the Amorites H567 D-TMS , that H834 RPRO were beyond H5676 Jordan H3383 D-EFS , to Sihon H5511 king H4428 NMS of Heshbon H2809 , and to Og H5747 king H4428 NMS of Bashan H1316 , which H834 RPRO was at Ashtaroth H6252 .
11 Wherefore our elders H2205 and all H3605 W-CMS the inhabitants H3427 of our country H776 spoke H559 W-VQY3MP to H413 us , saying H559 L-VQFC , Take H3947 victuals H6720 with you H3027 for the journey H1870 , and go H1980 W-VQI2MP to meet H7125 them , and say H559 unto H413 PREP-3MP them , We H587 PPRO-1MP are your servants H5650 : therefore now H6258 W-ADV make H3772 ye a league H1285 with us .
12 This H2088 DPRO our bread H3899 we took hot H2525 for our provision H6679 out of our houses H1004 on the day H3117 B-NMS we came forth H3318 to go H1980 L-VQFC unto H413 you ; but now H6258 W-ADV , behold H2009 IJEC , it is dry H3001 , and it is H1961 W-VQQ3MS moldy H5350 :
13 And these H428 W-PMP bottles H4997 of wine H3196 D-NMS , which H834 RPRO we filled H4390 , were new H2319 AMP ; and , behold H2009 IJEC , they be rent H1234 : and these H428 W-PMP our garments H8008 and our shoes H5275 are become old H1086 by reason of the very H3966 ADV long H7230 M-NMS journey H1870 D-NMS .
14 And the men H376 took H3947 W-VQY3MP of their victuals H6718 , and asked H7592 not H3808 NADV counsel at the mouth H6310 of the LORD H3068 EDS .
15 And Joshua H3091 made H6213 W-VQY3MS peace H7965 NMS with them , and made H6213 W-VQY3MS a league H1285 NFS with them , to let them live H2421 : and the princes H5387 of the congregation H5712 swore H7650 unto them .
16 And it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS at the end H7097 M-CMS of three H7969 BMS days H3117 NMP after H310 PREP they had made H3772 a league H1285 NFS with them , that they heard H8085 W-VQY3MP that H3588 CONJ they H1992 PPRO-3MP were their H413 PREP-3MS neighbors H7138 , and that they H1992 PPRO-3MP dwelt H3427 among H7130 them .
17 And the children H1121 of Israel H3478 journeyed H5265 , and came H935 W-VQY3MP unto H413 PREP their cities H5892 on the third H7992 D-ONUM day H3117 B-AMS . Now their cities H5892 were Gibeon H1391 , and Chephirah H3716 , and Beeroth H881 , and Kirjath H7157 - jearim .
18 And the children H1121 of Israel H3478 smote H5221 them not H3808 W-NPAR , because H3588 CONJ the princes H5387 of the congregation H5712 had sworn H7650 unto them by the LORD H3068 God H430 CDP of Israel H3478 . And all H3605 CMS the congregation H5712 murmured H3885 against H5921 PREP the princes H5387 .
19 But all H3605 NMS the princes H5387 said H559 W-VQY3MP unto H413 PREP all H3605 NMS the congregation H5712 , We H587 PPRO-1MP have sworn H7650 unto them by the LORD H3068 God H430 CDP of Israel H3478 : now H6258 W-ADV therefore we may H3201 not H3808 NADV touch H5060 them .
20 This H2063 DPRO we will do H6213 to them ; we will even let them live H2421 , lest H3808 W-NPAR wrath H7110 be H1961 VQY3MS upon H5921 PREP us , because of H5921 PREP the oath H7621 which H834 RPRO we swore H7650 unto them .
21 And the princes H5387 said H559 W-VQY3MP unto H413 PREP-3MP them , Let them live H2421 ; but let them be H1961 W-VQY3MP hewers H2404 of wood H6086 and drawers H7579 of water H4325 OMD unto all H3605 L-CMS the congregation H5712 ; as H834 K-RPRO the princes H5387 had promised H1696 them .
22 And Joshua H3091 called H7121 W-VQY3MS for them , and he spoke H1696 W-VPY3MS unto H413 PREP-3MP them , saying H559 L-VQFC , Wherefore H4100 L-IPRO have ye beguiled H7411 us , saying H559 L-VQFC , We H587 PPRO-1MP are very H3966 ADV far H7350 from H4480 M-PPRO-2MS you ; when ye H859 W-PPRO-2MP dwell H3427 among H7130 us ?
23 Now H6258 W-ADV therefore ye H859 PPRO-2MS are cursed H779 , and there shall none H3808 W-NPAR of H4480 M-PPRO-2MS you be freed H3772 VNI3MS from being bondmen H5650 NMS , and hewers H2404 of wood H6086 and drawers H7579 of water H4325 OMD for the house H1004 of my God H430 CMP-1MS .
24 And they answered H6030 Joshua H3091 , and said H559 W-VQY3MP , Because H3588 CONJ it was certainly told H5046 thy servants H5650 , how that H834 RPRO the LORD H3068 EDS thy God H430 CMP-2MS commanded H6680 VPQ3MS his servant H5650 Moses H4872 to give H5414 L-VQFC you all H3605 NMS the land H776 D-GFS , and to destroy H8045 all H3605 NMS the inhabitants H3427 of the land H776 D-GFS from before H6440 you , therefore we were sore H3966 ADV afraid H3372 of our lives H5315 because of you , and have done H6213 this H2088 D-PMS thing H1697 D-NMS .
25 And now H6258 W-ADV , behold H2009 , we are in thine hand H3027 B-CFS-2MS : as it seemeth good H2896 and right H3477 unto thee H5869 to do H6213 L-VQFC unto us , do H6213 .
26 And so H3651 ADV did H6213 W-VQY3MS he unto them , and delivered H5337 them out of the hand H3027 M-GFS of the children H1121 of Israel H3478 , that they slew H2026 them not H3808 W-NPAR .
27 And Joshua H3091 made H5414 them that H1931 D-PPRO-3MS day H3117 B-AMS hewers H2404 of wood H6086 and drawers H7579 of water H4325 OMD for the congregation H5712 , and for the altar H4196 of the LORD H3068 EDS , even unto H5704 PREP this H2088 D-PMS day H3117 D-AMS , in H413 PREP the place H4725 D-NMS which H834 RPRO he should choose H977 .
