Luke 24 (NIRV) New International Reader's Version

1 It was very early in the morning on the first day of the week. The women took the spices they had prepared. Then they went to the tomb.
2 They found the stone rolled away from it.
3 When they entered the tomb, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.
4 They were wondering about this. Suddenly two men in clothes as bright as lightning stood beside them.
5 The women were terrified. They bowed down with their faces to the ground. Then the men said to them, "Why do you look for the living among the dead?
6 Jesus is not here! He has risen! Remember how he told you he would rise. It was while he was still with you in Galilee.
7 He said, 'The Son of Man must be handed over to sinful people. He must be nailed to a cross. On the third day he will rise from the dead.' "
8 Then the women remembered Jesus' words.
9 They came back from the tomb. They told all these things to the Eleven and to all the others.
10 Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the others with them were the ones who told the apostles.
11 But the apostles did not believe the women. Their words didn't make any sense to them.
12 But Peter got up and ran to the tomb. He bent over and saw the strips of linen lying by themselves. Then he went away, wondering what had happened.
13 That same day two of Jesus' followers were going to a village called Emmaus. It was about seven miles from Jerusalem.
14 They were talking with each other about everything that had happened.
15 As they talked about those things, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them.
16 But God kept them from recognizing him.
17 Jesus asked them, "What are you talking about as you walk along?" They stood still, and their faces were sad.
18 One of them was named Cleopas. He said to Jesus, "You must be a visitor to Jerusalem. If you lived there, you would know the things that have happened there in the last few days."
19 "What things?" Jesus asked. "About Jesus of Nazareth," they replied. "He was a prophet. He was powerful in what he said and did in the eyes of God and all of the people.
20 The chief priests and our rulers handed Jesus over to be sentenced to death. They nailed him to a cross.
21 But we had hoped that he was the one who was going to set Israel free. Also, it is the third day since all this happened.
22 "Some of our women amazed us too. Early this morning they went to the tomb.
23 But they didn't find his body. So they came and told us what they had seen. They saw angels, who said Jesus was alive.
24 Then some of our friends went to the tomb. They saw it was empty, just as the women had said. They didn't see Jesus' body there."
25 Jesus said to them, "How foolish you are! How long it takes you to believe all that the prophets said!
26 Didn't the Christ have to suffer these things and then receive his glory?"
27 Jesus explained to them what was said about himself in all the Scriptures. He began with Moses and all the Prophets.
28 The two men approached the village where they were going. Jesus acted as if he were going farther.
29 But they tried hard to keep him from leaving. They said, "Stay with us. It is nearly evening. The day is almost over." So he went in to stay with them.
30 He joined them at the table. Then he took bread and gave thanks. He broke it and began to give it to them.
31 Their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. But then he disappeared from their sight.
32 They said to each other, "He talked with us on the road. He opened the Scriptures to us. Weren't our hearts burning inside us during that time?"
33 They got up and returned at once to Jerusalem. There they found the Eleven and those with them. They were all gathered together.
34 They were saying, "It's true! The Lord has risen! He has appeared to Simon!"
35 Then the two of them told what had happened to them on the way. They told how they had recognized Jesus when he broke the bread.
36 The disciples were still talking about this when Jesus himself suddenly stood among them. He said, "May peace be with you!"
37 They were surprised and terrified. They thought they were seeing a ghost.
38 Jesus said to them, "Why are you troubled? Why do you have doubts in your minds?
39 Look at my hands and my feet. It is really I! Touch me and see. A ghost does not have a body or bones. But you can see that I do."
40 After he said that, he showed them his hands and feet.
41 But they still did not believe it. They were amazed and filled with joy. So Jesus asked them, "Do you have anything here to eat?"
42 They gave him a piece of cooked fish.
43 He took it and ate it in front of them.
44 Jesus said to them, "This is what I told you while I was still with you. Everything written about me must happen. Everything written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms must come true."
45 Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures.
46 He told them, "This is what is written. The Christ will suffer. He will rise from the dead on the third day.
47 His followers will preach in his name. They will tell others to turn away from their sins and be forgiven. People from every nation will hear it, beginning at Jerusalem.
48 You have seen these things with your own eyes.
49 "I am going to send you what my Father has promised. But for now, stay in the city. Stay there until you have received power from heaven."
50 Jesus led his disciples out to the area near Bethany. Then he lifted up his hands and blessed them.
51 While he was blessing them, he left them. He was taken up into heaven.
52 Then they worshiped him. With great joy, they returned to Jerusalem.
53 Every day they went to the temple, praising God.

3 And G2532 CONJ they entered in G1525 V-2AAP-NPF , and found G2147 V-2AAI-3P not G3756 PRT-N the G3588 T-ASN body G4983 N-ASN of G3588 T-GSM the G3588 T-GSM Lord G2962 N-GSM Jesus G2424 N-GSM .
4 And G2532 CONJ it came to pass G1096 V-2ADI-3S , as they G3588 T-DSM were much perplexed G1280 V-PPN thereabout G4012 PREP , behold G2400 V-2AAM-2S , two G1417 A-NUI men G435 N-NPM stood by G2186 V-2AAI-3P them G846 P-DPF in G1722 PREP shining G797 V-PAP-DPF garments G2067 N-DPF :

6 He is G2076 V-PXI-3S not G3756 PRT-N here G5602 ADV , but G235 CONJ is risen G1453 V-API-3S : remember G3415 V-APM-2P how G5613 ADV he spake G2980 V-AAI-3S unto you G5213 P-2DP when he was G5607 V-PXP-NSM yet G2089 ADV in G1722 PREP Galilee G1056 N-DSF ,
7 Saying G3004 V-PAP-NSM , the G3588 T-ASM Son G5207 N-ASM of man G444 N-GSM must G1163 V-PQI-3S be delivered G3860 V-APN into G1519 PREP the hands G5495 N-APF of sinful G268 A-GPM men G435 , and G2532 CONJ be crucified G4717 V-APN , and G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-DSF third G5154 A-DSF day G2250 N-DSF rise again G450 V-2AAN .
8 And G2532 CONJ they remembered G3415 V-API-3P his G3588 T-GPN words G4487 N-GPN ,
9 And G2532 CONJ returned G5290 V-AAP-NPF from G575 PREP the G3588 T-GSN sepulcher G3419 N-GSN , and told G518 V-AAI-3P all G3956 A-APN these things G5023 D-APN unto the G3588 T-DPM eleven G1733 A-NUI , and G2532 CONJ to all G3956 A-DPM the G3588 T-DPM rest G3062 A-DPM .
10 It was G2258 V-IXI-3P Mary G3137 N-NSF Magdalene G3094 N-NSF and G2532 CONJ Joanna G2489 N-NSF , and G2532 CONJ Mary G3137 N-NSF the G3588 T-NSF mother of James G2385 N-GSM , and G2532 CONJ other G3062 A-NPF women that were with G4862 PREP them G846 P-DPF , which G3739 R-NPF told G3004 V-IAI-3P these things G5023 D-APN unto G4314 PREP the G3588 T-APM apostles G652 N-APM .
11 And G2532 CONJ their G3588 T-NPN words G4487 N-NPN seemed G5316 V-2API-3P to G1799 ADV them G846 P-GPF as G5616 ADV idle tales G3026 N-NSM , and G2532 CONJ they believed them not G569 V-IAI-3P .
12 Then G1161 CONJ arose G450 V-2AAP-NSM Peter G4074 N-NSM , and ran G5143 V-2AAI-3S unto G1909 PREP the G3588 T-ASN sepulcher G3419 N-ASN ; and G2532 CONJ stooping down G3879 V-AAP-NSM , he beheld G991 V-PAI-3S the G3588 T-APN linen clothes G3608 N-APN laid G2749 V-PNP-APN by themselves G3441 A-APN , and G2532 CONJ departed G565 V-2AAI-3S , wondering G2296 V-PAP-NSM in G4314 PREP himself G3588 T-ASN at that which was come to pass G1096 V-2RAP-ASN .
13 And G2532 CONJ , behold G2400 V-2AAM-2S , two G1417 A-NUI of G1537 PREP them G846 P-GPM went G2258 V-IXI-3P that G3588 T-DSF same G3588 T-DSF day G2250 N-DSF to G1519 PREP a village G2968 N-ASF called G3686 N-NSN Emmaus G1695 N-PRI , which was G568 V-PAP-ASF from G575 PREP Jerusalem G2419 N-PRI about threescore G1835 A-NUI furlongs G4712 N-APN .
14 And G2532 CONJ they G846 P-NPM talked G3656 V-IAI-3P together G4314 PREP of G4012 PREP all G3956 A-GPN these G3588 T-GPN things G5130 D-GPN which had happened G4819 V-RAP-GPN .
15 And G2532 CONJ it came to pass G1096 V-2ADI-3S , that , while they G3588 T-DSM communed G3656 V-PAN together and G2532 CONJ reasoned G4802 V-PAN , Jesus G2424 N-NSM himself G846 P-NSM drew near G1448 V-AAP-NSM , and went with G4848 V-INI-3S them G846 P-DPM .
16 But G1161 CONJ their G846 P-GPM eyes G3788 N-NPM were holden G2902 V-IPI-3P that they should not G3361 PRT-N know G1921 V-2AAN him G846 P-ASM .
17 And G1161 CONJ he said G2036 V-2AAI-3S unto G4314 PREP them G846 P-APM , What G3588 T-NPM manner G5101 I-NPM of communications G3056 N-NPM are these G3778 D-NPM that G3739 R-APM ye have G474 V-PAI-2P one to another G240 C-APM , as ye walk G4043 V-PAP-NPM , and G2532 CONJ are G2075 V-PXI-2P sad G4659 A-NPM ?
18 And G1161 CONJ the G3588 T-NSM one G1520 A-NSM of them , whose G3739 R-DSM name G3686 N-NSN was Cleopas G2810 N-NSM , answering G611 V-AOP-NSM said G2036 V-2AAI-3S unto G4314 PREP him G846 P-ASM , Art thou only a stranger G3939 V-PAI-2S in G1722 PREP Jerusalem G2419 N-PRI , and G2532 CONJ hast not G3756 PRT-N known G1097 V-2AAI-2S the things which are come to pass G1096 V-2ADP-APN there G846 P-DSF in G1722 PREP these G3588 T-DPF days G2250 N-DPF ?

21 But G1161 CONJ we G2249 P-1NP trusted G1679 V-IAI-1P that G3754 CONJ it had been G2076 V-PXI-3S he G3588 T-NSM which should G3195 V-PAP-NSM have redeemed G3084 V-PMN Israel G2474 N-PRI : and PRT beside G4862 PREP all G3956 A-DPN this G5125 D-DPN , today G4594 ADV is G71 V-PAI-3S the G5026 third G5154 A-ASF day G2250 N-ASF since G575 PREP these things G5023 D-NPN were done G1096 V-2ADI-3S .
22 Yea , and G235 CONJ certain G5100 X-NPF women G1135 N-NPF also G2532 CONJ of G1537 PREP our company G2257 P-1GP made us astonished G1839 V-2AAI-3P , which were G1096 V-2ADP-NPF early G3721 A-NPF at G1909 PREP the G3588 T-ASN sepulcher G3419 N-ASN ;
23 And G2532 CONJ when they found G2147 V-2AAP-NPF not G3361 PRT-N his G3588 T-ASN body G4983 N-ASN , they came G2064 V-2AAI-3P , saying G3004 V-PAP-NPF , that they had also G2532 CONJ seen G3708 V-RAN-ATT a vision G3701 N-ASF of angels G32 N-GPM , which G3739 R-NPM said G3004 V-PAI-3P that he G846 P-ASM was alive G2198 V-PAN .
24 And G2532 CONJ certain G5100 X-NPM of G3588 T-GPM them G3588 T-GPM which were with G4862 PREP us G2254 P-1DP went G565 V-2AAI-3P to G1909 PREP the G3588 T-ASN sepulcher G3419 N-ASN , and G2532 CONJ found G2147 V-2AAI-3P it even G2532 CONJ so G3779 ADV as G2531 ADV the G3588 T-NPF women G1135 N-NPF had said G2036 V-2AAI-3P : but G1161 CONJ him G846 P-ASM they saw G1492 V-2AAI-3P not G3756 PRT-N .
25 Then G2532 CONJ he G846 P-NSM said G2036 V-2AAI-3S unto G4314 PREP them G846 P-APM , O G5599 INJ fools G453 A-VPM , and G2532 CONJ slow G1021 A-NPM of G3588 T-GSM heart G2588 N-DSF to believe G4100 V-PAN all G3956 A-DPN that G3739 R-DPN the G3588 T-NPM prophets G4396 N-NPM have spoken G2980 V-AAI-3P :
26 Ought G1163 V-IQI-3S not G3780 PRT-I Christ G5547 N-ASM to have suffered G3958 V-2AAN these things G5023 D-APN , and G2532 CONJ to enter G1525 V-2AAN into G1519 PREP his G3588 T-ASF glory G1391 N-ASF ?

28 And G2532 CONJ they drew nigh G1448 V-AAI-3P unto G1519 PREP the G3588 T-ASF village G2968 N-ASF , whither G3757 ADV they went G4198 V-INI-3P : and G2532 CONJ he G846 P-NSM made as though G4364 V-IMI-3S he would have gone G4198 V-PNN further G4208 ADV-C .
29 But G2532 CONJ they constrained G3849 V-ADI-3P him G846 P-ASM , saying G3004 V-PAP-NPM , Abide G3306 V-AAM-2S with G3326 PREP us G2257 P-1GP : for G3754 CONJ it is G2076 V-PXI-3S toward G4314 PREP evening G2073 N-ASF , and G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-NSF day G2250 N-NSF is far spent G2827 V-RAI-3S . And G2532 CONJ he G3588 T-GSM went in G1525 V-2AAI-3S to tarry G3306 V-AAN with G4862 PREP them G846 P-DPM .
30 And G2532 CONJ it came to pass G1096 V-2ADI-3S , as he G3588 T-DSM sat at meat G2625 V-APN with G3326 PREP them G846 P-GPM , he G3588 T-ASM took G2983 V-2AAP-NSM bread G740 N-ASM , and blessed G2127 V-AAI-3S it , and G2532 CONJ broke G2806 V-AAP-NSM , and gave G1929 V-IAI-3S to them G846 P-DPM .
31 And G1161 CONJ their G3588 T-NPM eyes G3788 N-NPM were opened G1272 V-API-3P , and G2532 CONJ they knew G1921 V-2AAI-3P him G846 P-ASM ; and G2532 CONJ he G846 P-NSM vanished G855 A-NSM out of their sight G575 PREP .
32 And G2532 CONJ they said G2036 V-2AAI-3P one to another G240 C-APM , Did not G3780 PRT-I our G3588 T-NSF heart G2588 N-NSF burn G2258 V-IXI-3S within G1722 PREP us G2254 P-1DP , while G5613 ADV he talked G2980 V-IAI-3S with us G2254 P-1DP by G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DSF way G3598 N-DSF , and G2532 CONJ while G5613 ADV he opened G1272 V-IAI-3S to us G2254 P-1DP the G3588 T-APF Scriptures G1124 N-APF ?
33 And G2532 CONJ they rose up G450 V-2AAP-NPM the G3588 T-DSF same G3588 T-DSF hour G5610 N-DSF , and returned G5290 V-AAI-3P to G1519 PREP Jerusalem G2419 N-PRI , and G2532 CONJ found G2147 V-2AAI-3P the G3588 T-APM eleven G1733 A-NUI gathered together G4867 V-RPP-APM , and G2532 CONJ them G3588 T-APM that were with G4862 PREP them G846 P-DPM ,
34 Saying G3004 V-PAP-APM , The G3588 T-NSM Lord G2962 N-NSM is risen G1453 V-API-3S indeed G3689 ADV , and G2532 CONJ hath appeared G3700 V-API-3S to Simon G4613 N-DSM .
35 And G2532 CONJ they G846 P-NPM told G1834 V-INI-3P what G3588 T-APN things G3588 T-APN were done in G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DSF way G3598 N-DSF , and G2532 CONJ how G5613 ADV he was known G1097 V-API-3S of them G846 P-DPM in G1722 PREP breaking G2800 N-DSF of bread G740 N-GSM .
36 And G1161 CONJ as they G846 P-GPM thus G5023 D-APN spake G2980 V-PAP-GPM , Jesus G2424 N-NSM himself G846 P-NSM stood G2476 V-2AAI-3S in G1722 PREP the midst G3319 A-DSN of them G846 P-GPM , and G2532 CONJ saith G3004 V-PAI-3S unto them G846 P-DPM , Peace G1515 N-NSF be unto you G5213 P-2DP .
37 But G1161 CONJ they were terrified G4422 V-APP-NPM and G2532 CONJ affrighted G1719 A-NPM , and supposed G1380 V-IAI-3P that they had seen G2334 V-PAN a spirit G4151 N-ASN .
38 And G2532 CONJ he said G2036 V-2AAI-3S unto them G846 P-DPM , Why G5101 I-ASN are G2075 V-PXI-2P ye troubled G5015 V-RPP-NPM ? and G2532 CONJ why G1302 do thoughts G1261 N-NPM arise G305 V-PAI-3P in G1722 PREP your G3588 T-DPF hearts G2588 N-DPF ?
39 Behold G1492 V-2AAM-2P my G3588 T-APF hands G5495 N-APF and G2532 CONJ my G3588 T-APM feet G4228 N-APM , that G3754 CONJ it is G1510 V-PXI-1S I G1473 P-1NS myself G846 P-NSM : handle G5584 V-AAM-2P me G3165 P-1AS , and G2532 CONJ see G1492 V-2AAM-2P ; for G3754 CONJ a spirit G4151 N-NSN hath G2192 V-PAI-3S not G3756 PRT-N flesh G4561 N-ASF and G2532 CONJ bones G3747 N-APN , as G2531 ADV ye see G2334 V-PAI-2P me G1691 P-1AS have G2192 V-PAP-ASM .
40 And G2532 CONJ when he had thus G5124 D-ASN spoken G2036 V-2AAP-NSM , he showed G1925 V-AAI-3S them G3588 T-APF his hands G5495 N-APF and G2532 CONJ his feet G4228 N-APM .
41 And G1161 CONJ while they G846 P-GPM yet G2089 ADV believed not G569 V-PAP-GPM for G3588 T-GSF joy G5479 N-GSF , and G2532 CONJ wondered G2296 V-PAP-GPM , he said G2036 V-2AAI-3S unto them G846 P-DPM , Have G2192 V-PAI-2P ye here G1759 ADV any G5100 X-ASN meat G1034 A-ASN ?
42 And G1161 CONJ they G3588 T-NPM gave G1929 V-AAI-3P him G846 P-DSM a piece G3313 N-ASN of a broiled G3702 A-GSM fish G2486 N-GSM , and G2532 CONJ of G575 PREP a honeycomb G3193 A-GSN .
43 And G2532 CONJ he took G2983 V-2AAP-NSM it , and did eat G5315 V-2AAI-3S before G1799 ADV them G846 P-GPM .
44 And G1161 CONJ he said G2036 V-2AAI-3S unto them G846 P-DPM , These G3778 D-NPM are the G3588 T-NPM words G3056 N-NPM which G3739 R-APM I spake G2980 V-AAI-1S unto G4314 PREP you G5209 P-2AP , while I was G5607 V-PXP-NSM yet G2089 ADV with G4862 PREP you G5213 P-2DP , that G3754 CONJ all things G3956 A-APN must G1163 V-PQI-3S be fulfilled G4137 V-APN , which were written G1125 V-RPP-APN in G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DSM law G3551 N-DSM of Moses G3475 N-GSM , and G2532 CONJ in the prophets G4396 N-DPM , and G2532 CONJ in the psalms G5568 N-DPM , concerning G4012 PREP me G1700 P-1GS .
45 Then G5119 ADV opened G1272 V-AAI-3S he G3588 T-ASM their G3588 T-ASM understanding G3563 N-ASM , that they might understand G4920 V-PAN the G3588 T-APF Scriptures G1124 N-APF ,
46 And G2532 CONJ said G2036 V-2AAI-3S unto them G846 P-DPM , Thus G3779 ADV it is written G1125 V-RPI-3S , and G2532 CONJ thus G3779 ADV it G3588 T-ASM behooved G1163 V-IQI-3S Christ G5547 N-ASM to suffer G3958 V-2AAN , and G2532 CONJ to rise G450 V-2AAN from G1537 PREP the dead G3498 A-GPM the G3588 T-DSF third G5154 A-DSF day G2250 N-DSF :
47 And G2532 CONJ that repentance G3341 N-ASF and G2532 CONJ remission G859 N-ASF of sins G266 N-GPF should be preached G2784 V-APN in G1909 PREP his G3588 T-DSN name G3686 N-DSN among G1519 PREP all G3956 A-APN nations G1484 N-APN , beginning G756 V-AMP-NSN at G575 PREP Jerusalem G2419 N-PRI .
48 And G1161 CONJ ye G5210 P-2NP are G2075 V-PXI-2P witnesses G3144 N-NPM of these things G5130 D-GPN .
