Isaiah 49:5 (NIRV) New International Reader's Version

1 People who live on the islands, listen to me. Pay attention, you nations far away. Before I was born the Lord chose me to serve him. He appointed me by name.
2 He made my words like a sharp sword. He hid me in the palm of his hand. He made me into a sharpened arrow. He took good care of me and kept me safe.
3 He said to me, "You are my true servant Israel. I will show my glory through you."
4 But I said, "In spite of my hard work, I feel as if I haven't accomplished anything. I've used up all of my strength. It seems as if everything I've done is worthless. But the Lord will give me what I should receive. My God will reward me."
5 The Lord formed me in my mother's body to be his servant. He wanted me to bring the family of Jacob back to him. He wanted me to gather the people of Israel to himself. The Lord will honor me. My God will give me strength.
6 The Lord says to me, "It is not enough for you as my servant to bring the tribes of Jacob back to their land. It is not enough for you to bring back the people of Israel I have kept alive. I will also make you a light for other nations. Then you will make it possible for the whole world to be saved."
7 The Lord sets his people free. He is the Holy One of Israel. He speaks to his servant, who is looked down on and hated by the nations. He speaks to the servant of rulers. He says to him, "Kings will see you and rise up to honor you. Princes will see you and bow down to show you their respect. I am the Lord. I am faithful. I am the Holy One of Israel. I have chosen you."
8 The Lord says to his servant, "When it is time to show you my favor, I will answer your prayers. When it is time to save you, I will help you. I will keep you safe. You will put my covenant with the people of Israel into effect. Then their land will be made like new again. Each tribe will be sent back to its territory that was left empty.
9 I want you to say to the prisoners, 'Come out.' Tell those who are in their dark cells, 'You are free!' "On their way home they will eat beside the roads. They will find plenty to eat on every bare hill.
10 They will not get hungry or thirsty. The heat from the desert sun will not beat down on them. The One who shows his tender love to them will guide them. Like a shepherd, he will lead them beside springs of water.
11 I will make roads across the mountains. I will build wide roads for my people.
12 They will come from far away. Some of them will come from the north. Others will come from the west. Still others will come from Aswan in the south."
13 Shout with joy, you heavens! Be glad, you earth! Burst into song, you mountains! The Lord will comfort his people. He will show his tender love to those who are suffering.
14 But the city of Zion said, "The Lord has deserted me. The Lord has forgotten me."
15 The Lord answers, "Can a mother forget the baby who is nursing at her breast? Can she stop showing her tender love to the child who was born to her? She might forget her child. But I will not forget you.
16 I have written your name on the palms of my hands. Your walls are never out of my sight.
17 Your people will hurry back. Those who destroyed you so completely will leave you.
18 Look up. Look all around you. All of your people are getting together to come back to you. You can be sure that I live," announces the Lord. "And you can be just as sure that your people will be like decorations you will wear. Like a bride, you will wear them proudly.
19 "Zion, you were destroyed. Your land was left empty. It was turned into a dry and empty desert. But now you will be too small to hold all of your people. And those who destroyed you will be far away.
20 The children who were born during your time of sorrow will speak to you. They will say, 'This city is too small for us. Give us more space to live in.'
21 Then you will say to yourself, 'Whose children are these? I lost my children. And I couldn't have any more. My children were taken far away from me. And no one wanted them. Who brought these children up? I was left all alone. So where have these children come from?' "
22 The Lord and King continues, "I will call out to the nations. I will give a signal to them. They will bring back your sons in their arms. They will carry your daughters on their shoulders.
23 Their kings will become like fathers to you. Their queens will be like mothers who nurse you. They will bow down to you with their faces toward the ground. They will kiss the dust at your feet to show you their respect. Then you will know that I am the Lord. Those who put their hope in me will not be ashamed."
24 Can goods that were stolen by soldiers be taken away from them? Can prisoners be set free from the powerful Babylonians?
25 "Yes, they can," the Lord answers. "Prisoners will be taken away from soldiers. Stolen goods will be taken back from the powerful Babylonians. Zion, I will fight against those who fight against you. And I will save your people.
26 I will make those who beat you down eat the flesh of others. They will drink blood and get drunk on it as if it were wine. Then everyone on earth will know that I am the one who saves you. I am the Lord. I set you free. I am the Mighty One of Jacob."

2 And he hath made H7760 W-VQY3MS my mouth H6310 like a sharp H2299 sword H2719 ; in the shadow H6738 of his hand H3027 CFS-3MS hath he hid H2244 me , and made H7760 me a polished H1305 VWPMS shaft H2671 ; in his quiver H827 hath he hid H5641 me ;
3 And said H559 W-VQY3MS unto me , Thou H859 PPRO-2MS art my servant H5650 CMS-1MS , O Israel H3478 , in whom H834 RPRO I will be glorified H6286 .
4 Then I H589 W-PPRO-1MS said H559 VQQ1MS , I have labored H3021 in vain H7385 L-NMS , I have spent H3615 my strength H3581 CMS-1MS for naught H8414 , and in vain H1892 : yet surely H403 ADV my judgment H4941 CMS-1MS is with H854 PREP the LORD H3068 EDS , and my work H6468 with H854 PREP my God H430 CMP-1MS .
5 And now H6258 W-ADV , saith H559 VQQ3MS the LORD H3068 EDS that formed H3335 me from the womb H990 M-CFS to be his servant H5650 L-CMS , to bring Jacob again H7725 to H413 PREP-3MS him , Though Israel H3478 be not gathered H622 VNY3MS , yet shall I be glorious H3513 in the eyes H5869 B-CMP of the LORD H3068 EDS , and my God H430 shall be H1961 VQQ3MS my strength H5797 .
6 And he said H559 W-VQY3MS , It is a light thing H7043 that thou shouldest be my servant H5650 NMS to raise up H6965 the tribes H7626 of Jacob H3290 , and to restore H7725 L-VHFC the preserved H5341 of Israel H3478 : I will also give H5414 thee for a light H216 L-NMS to the Gentiles H1471 NMP , that thou mayest be H1961 my salvation H3444 unto H5704 PREP the end H7097 of the earth H776 D-GFS .
7 Thus H3541 saith H559 the LORD H3068 EDS , the Redeemer H1350 of Israel H3478 , and his Holy One H6918 , to him whom man H5315 GFS despiseth H960 , to him whom the nation H1471 NMS abhorreth H8581 , to a servant H5650 L-CMS of rulers H4910 , Kings H4428 NMP shall see H7200 VQY3MP and arise H6965 , princes H8269 NMP also shall worship H7812 , because of H4616 L-CONJ the LORD H3068 EDS that H834 RPRO is faithful H539 , and the Holy One H6918 of Israel H3478 , and he shall choose H977 thee .
8 Thus H3541 saith H559 VQQ3MS the LORD H3068 EDS , In an acceptable H7522 time H6256 have I heard H6030 thee , and in a day H3117 of salvation H3444 have I helped H5826 thee : and I will preserve H5341 thee , and give H5414 thee for a covenant H1285 of the people H5971 NMS , to establish H6965 the earth H776 GFS , to cause to inherit H5157 the desolate H8074 heritages H5159 ;
9 That thou mayest say H559 L-VQFC to the prisoners H631 , Go forth H3318 ; to them that H834 L-RPRO are in darkness H2822 BD-NMS , Show yourselves H1540 . They shall feed H7462 VQY3MP in H5921 PREP the ways H1870 , and their pastures H4830 shall be in all H3605 WB-CMS high places H8205 .
10 They shall not H3808 NADV hunger H7456 nor H3808 W-NADV thirst H6770 ; neither H3808 W-NADV shall the heat H8273 nor sun H8121 smite H5221 them : for H3588 CONJ he that hath mercy H7355 on them shall lead H5090 them , even by H5921 W-PREP the springs H4002 of water H4325 OMD shall he guide H5095 them .
11 And I will make H7760 W-VQQ1MS all H3605 CMS my mountains H2022 a way H1870 , and my highways H4546 shall be exalted H7311 .
12 Behold H2009 IJEC , these H428 PMP shall come H935 VQY3MP from far H7350 M-AMS : and , lo H2009 IJEC , these H428 PMP from the north H6828 M-NFS and from the west H3220 ; and these H428 W-PMP from the land H776 M-NFS of Sinim H5515 .
13 Sing H7442 , O heavens H8064 NMP ; and be joyful H1523 , O earth H776 NFS ; and break forth H6476 into singing H7440 , O mountains H2022 NMP : for H3588 CONJ the LORD H3068 EDS hath comforted H5162 his people H5971 , and will have mercy H7355 upon his afflicted H6041 .
14 But Zion H6726 said H559 W-VQY3FS , The LORD H3068 EDS hath forsaken H5800 me , and my Lord H136 hath forgotten H7911 me .
15 Can a woman H802 NFS forget H7911 her sucking child H5764 , that she should not have compassion H7355 on the son H1121 of her womb H990 ? yea H1571 CONJ , they H428 PMP may forget H7911 , yet will I H595 W-PPRO-1MS not H3808 NADV forget H7911 thee .
16 Behold H2005 IJEC , I have graven H2710 thee upon H5921 PREP the palms of my hands H3709 NFD ; thy walls H2346 are continually H8548 before H5048 PREP-1MS me .
17 Thy children H1121 shall make haste H4116 ; thy destroyers H2040 and they that made thee waste H2717 shall go forth H3318 of H4480 thee .
18 Lift up H5375 thine eyes H5869 round about H5439 ADV , and behold H7200 : all H3605 CMS-3MP these gather themselves together H6908 , and come H935 to thee . As I H589 PPRO-1MS live H2416 AMS , saith H5002 the LORD H3068 EDS , thou shalt surely H3588 CONJ clothe H3847 thee with them all H3605 , as with an ornament H5716 , and bind H7194 them on thee , as a bride H3618 doeth .
19 For H3588 CONJ thy waste H2723 and thy desolate places H8074 , and the land H776 W-NFS of thy destruction H2035 , shall even H3588 CONJ now H6258 ADV be too narrow H3334 by reason of the inhabitants H3427 , and they that swallowed thee up H1104 shall be far away H7368 .
20 The children H1121 which thou shalt have , after thou hast lost the other H7923 , shall say H559 VQY3MP again H5750 ADV in thine ears H241 , The place H4725 D-NMS is too strait H6862 AMS for me : give place H5066 to me that I may dwell H3427 .
21 Then shalt thou say H559 in thine heart H3824 , Who H4310 IPRO hath begotten H3205 me these H428 PMP , seeing I H589 W-PPRO-1MS have lost my children H7909 , and am desolate H1565 , a captive H1540 , and removing to and fro H5493 ? and who H4310 IPRO hath brought up H1431 these H428 W-PMP ? Behold H2005 IJEC , I H589 W-PPRO-1MS was left H7604 alone H905 L-CMS-1MS ; these H428 PMP , where H375 IGAT had they H1992 been ?
22 Thus H3541 saith H559 VQQ3MS the Lord H136 EDS GOD H3069 , Behold H2009 IJEC , I will lift up H5375 VQY1MS mine hand H3027 CFS-1MS to H413 PREP the Gentiles H1471 NMP , and set up H7311 my standard H5251 to H413 PREP the people H5971 NMP : and they shall bring H935 thy sons H1121 in their arms H2684 , and thy daughters H1323 shall be carried H5375 upon H5921 PREP their shoulders H3802 .
23 And kings H4428 NMP shall be H1961 W-VQQ3MS thy nursing fathers H539 , and their queens H8282 thy nursing mothers H3243 : they shall bow down H7812 to thee with their face H639 NMD toward the earth H776 GFS , and lick up H3897 the dust H6083 of thy feet H7272 ; and thou shalt know H3045 that H3588 CONJ I H589 PPRO-1MS am the LORD H3068 EDS : for they H834 RPRO shall not H3808 ADV be ashamed H954 that wait H6960 for me .
24 Shall the prey H4455 be taken H3947 from the mighty H1368 , or H518 W-PART the lawful H6662 AMS captive H7628 delivered H4422 ?
25 But H3588 CONJ thus H3541 saith H559 VQQ3MS the LORD H3068 EDS , Even H1571 CONJ the captives H7628 of the mighty H1368 shall be taken away H3947 VWY3MS , and the prey H4455 of the terrible H6184 shall be delivered H4422 : for I H595 PPRO-1MS will contend with H7378 him that contendeth with H3401 thee , and I H595 PPRO-1MS will save H3467 thy children H1121 .
26 And I will feed H398 them that oppress H3238 thee with their own flesh H1320 ; and they shall be drunken H7937 with their own blood H1818 , as with sweet wine H6071 : and all H3605 CMS flesh H1320 NMS shall know H3045 that H3588 CONJ I H589 PPRO-1MS the LORD H3068 EDS am thy Savior H3467 and thy Redeemer H1350 , the mighty One H46 of Jacob H3290 .
