1 WHEN DAVID'S time to die was near, he charged Solomon his son, saying,

2 I go the way of all the earth. Be strong and show yourself a man;

3 Keep the charge of the Lord your God, walk in His ways, keep His statutes, His commandments, His precepts, and His testimonies, as it is written in the Law of Moses, that you may do wisely and prosper in all that you do and wherever you turn,

4 That the Lord may fulfill His promise to me, saying, If your sons take heed to their way, to walk before Me in truth with all their heart and mind and with all their soul, there shall not fail you to have a man on the throne of Israel.

5 You know also what Joab son of Zeruiah did to me, and what he did to the two captains of the hosts of Israel, Abner son of Ner and Amasa son of Jether, whom he murdered, avenging in time of peace blood shed in war, and putting innocent blood of war on the girdle on his loins and on the sandals of his feet.

6 Do therefore according to your wisdom, but let not his hoary head go down to Sheol (the place of the dead) in peace.

7 But show kindness to the sons of Barzillai the Gileadite and let them be among those who eat at your table; for with such kindness they met me when I fled because of Absalom your brother. II Sam. 17:27-29.

8 And you have with you Shimei son of Gera, the Benjamite of Bahurim, who cursed me with a grievous curse in the day when I went to Mahanaim. But he came down to meet me at the Jordan on my return, and I swore to him by the Lord, saying, I will not put you to death with the sword.

9 So do not hold him guiltless; for you are a wise man and know what you should do to him. His hoary head bring down to the grave with blood.

10 So David slept with his fathers and was buried in the City of David.

11 David reigned over Israel forty years--seven years in Hebron and thirty-three years in Jerusalem.

12 Then Solomon sat on the throne of David his father, and his kingdom was firmly established.

13 Adonijah, the son of David and Haggith, came to Bathsheba, the mother of Solomon. She said, Do you come peaceably? And he said, Peaceably.

14 He said, I have something to say to you. And she said, Say on.

15 He said, You know that the kingdom belonged to me as the eldest living son, and all Israel looked to me to reign. However, the kingdom has passed from me to my brother; for it was his from the Lord.

16 Now I make one request of you; do not deny me. And she said, Say on.

17 He said, I pray you, ask King Solomon, for he will not refuse you, to give me Abishag the Shunammite to be my wife. I Kings 1:1-4.

18 And Bathsheba said, Very well; I will speak for you to the king.

19 So Bathsheba went to King Solomon to speak to him for Adonijah. The king rose to meet her, bowed to her, sat down on his throne, and caused a seat to be set at his right hand for her, the king's mother.

20 Then she said, I have one small request to make of you; do not refuse me. The king said to her, Ask on, my mother, for I will not refuse you.

21 She said, Give Abishag the Shunammite to Adonijah your brother to be his wife.

22 King Solomon answered his mother, And why do you ask Abishag the Shunammite for Adonijah? Ask for him the kingdom also--for he is my elder brother--ask it even for him and for his supporters Abiathar the priest and Joab son of Zeruiah.

23 Then King Solomon swore by the Lord, saying, May God do so to me, and more also, if Adonijah has not requested this against his own life.

24 Therefore, as the Lord lives, Who has established me and set me on the throne of David my father and Who has made me a house as He promised, Adonijah shall be put to death this day.

25 So King Solomon sent Benaiah son of Jehoiada, who attacked Adonijah and he died.

26 And to Abiathar the priest the king said, Get to Anathoth to your own estate; for you deserve death, but I will not put you to death now, because you bore the ark of the Lord God before my father David and were afflicted in all my father endured.

27 So Solomon expelled Abiathar descendant of Eli from being priest to the Lord, fulfilling the word of the Lord which He spoke concerning the house of Eli in Shiloh. I Sam. 2:27-36.

28 When the news came to Joab, for Joab had followed Adonijah though he had not followed Absalom, he fled to the tent (tabernacle) of the Lord and caught hold of the horns of the altar before it.

29 King Solomon was told that Joab had fled to the tent of the Lord and was at the altar. Then Solomon sent Benaiah son of Jehoiada, saying, Go, strike him down.

30 So Benaiah came to the tent of the Lord and told Joab, The king commands, Come forth. But Joab said, No, I will die here. Then Benaiah brought the king word again, Thus said Joab, and thus he answered me.

31 The king said to him, Do as he has said. Strike him down and bury him, that you may take away from me and from my father's house the innocent blood which Joab shed.

32 The Lord shall return his bloody deeds upon his own head, for he fell upon two men more uncompromisingly righteous and honorable than he and slew them with the sword, without my father knowing of it: Abner son of Ner, captain of the host of Israel, and Amasa son of Jether, captain of the host of Judah.

33 So shall their blood return upon the head of Joab and of his descendants forever. But upon David, his descendants, his house, and his throne, there shall be peace from the Lord forever.

34 So Benaiah son of Jehoiada went up and struck and killed Joab, and he was buried at his own house in the wilderness.

35 The king put Benaiah son of Jehoiada in Joab's place over the army and put Zadok the priest in place of Abiathar.

36 The king sent for Shimei and said to him, Build yourself a house in Jerusalem and dwell there, and do not leave there.

37 For on the day you go out and pass over the brook Kidron, know with certainty that you shall die; your blood shall be upon your own head.

38 And Shimei said to the king, The saying is good. As my lord the king has said, so your servant will do. And Shimei dwelt in Jerusalem many days.

39 But after three years, two of Shimei's servants ran away to Achish son of Maacah, king of Gath. And Shimei was told, Behold, your runaway servants are in Gath.

40 So Shimei arose, saddled his donkey, and went to Gath to King Achish to seek his servants, and brought them from Gath.

41 It was told Solomon that Shimei went from Jerusalem to Gath and had returned.

42 And the king sent for Shimei and said to him, Did I not make you swear by the Lord and warn you, saying, Know with certainty, on the day you go out and walk abroad anywhere, you shall surely die? And you said to me, I have heard your word. It is accepted.

43 Why then have you not kept the oath of the Lord and the command with which I have charged you?

44 The king also said to Shimei, You are aware in your own heart of all the evil you did to my father David; so the Lord will return your evil upon your own head.

45 But King Solomon shall be blessed, and the throne of David shall be established before the Lord forever.

46 So the king commanded Benaiah son of Jehoiada, who went out and struck down Shimei, and he died. And the kingdom was established in the hands of Solomon.

8 And , behold ^H2009 ^IJEC , thou hast with ^H5973 ^PREP-2MS thee Shimei ^H8096 the son ^H1121 ^CMS of Gera ^H1617 , a Benjamite ^H1145 of Bahurim ^H980 , which ^H1931 ^W-PPRO-3MS cursed ^H7043 me with a grievous ^H4834 curse ^H7045 in the day ^H3117 ^B-NMS when I went ^H1980 to Mahanaim ^H4266 : but he ^H1931 ^W-PPRO-3MS came down ^H3381 ^VQQ3MS to meet ^H7125 me at Jordan ^H3383 ^D-EFS , and I swore ^H7650 to him by the LORD ^H3068 , saying ^H559 ^L-VQFC , I will not ^H518 ^PART put thee to death ^H4191 with the sword ^H2719 .

9 Now ^H6258 ^W-ADV therefore hold him not guiltless ^H5352 : for ^H3588 ^CONJ thou ^H859 ^PPRO-2MS art a wise ^H2450 ^AMS man ^H376 ^NMS , and knowest ^H3045 what ^H834 ^RPRO thou oughtest to do ^H6213 ^VQY2MS unto him ; but his hoar head ^H7872 bring thou down ^H3381 to the grave ^H7585 with blood ^H1818 .

10 So David ^H1732 ^MMS slept ^H7901 ^W-VQY3MS with ^H5973 ^PREP his fathers ^H1 , and was buried ^H6912 in the city ^H5892 of David ^H1732 .

13 And Adonijah ^H138 the son ^H1121 ^CMS of Haggith ^H2294 came ^H935 ^W-VQY3MS to ^H413 ^PREP Bath ^H1339 - sheba the mother ^H517 ^GFS of Solomon ^H8010 ^MMS . And she said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS , Comest ^H935 thou peaceably ^H7965 ? And he said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS , Peaceably ^H7965 .

14 He said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS moreover , I have somewhat to say ^H1697 ^VQPMS unto ^H413 thee . And she said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS , Say on ^H1696 .

22 And king ^H4428 ^D-NMS Solomon ^H8010 ^MMS answered ^H6030 ^W-VQY3MS and said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS unto his mother ^H517 , And why ^H4100 dost thou ^H859 ask ^H7592 Abishag ^H49 the Shunammite ^H7767 for Adonijah ^H138 ? ask ^H7592 for him the kingdom ^H4410 also ; for ^H3588 ^CONJ he ^H1931 ^PPRO-3MS is mine ^H4480 ^M-PREP-1MS elder ^H1419 ^D-AMS brother ^H251 ; even for him , and for Abiathar ^H54 the priest ^H3548 , and for Joab ^H3097 the son ^H1121 of Zeruiah ^H6870 .

23 Then king ^H4428 ^D-NMS Solomon ^H8010 ^MMS swore ^H7650 by the LORD ^H3068 , saying ^H559 ^L-VQFC , God ^H430 ^EDP do ^H6213 so ^H3541 to me , and more ^H3254 also ^H3541 , if ^H3588 ^CONJ Adonijah ^H138 have not spoken ^H1696 ^VPQ3MS this ^H2088 ^D-PMS word ^H1697 ^D-NMS against his own life ^H5315 .

24 Now ^H6258 ^W-ADV therefore , as the LORD ^H3068 ^EDS liveth ^H2416 ^AMS , which ^H834 ^RPRO hath established ^H3559 me , and set ^H3427 me on ^H5921 ^PREP the throne ^H3678 of David ^H1732 ^MMS my father ^H1 ^CMS-1MS , and who ^H834 ^RPRO hath made ^H6213 me a house ^H1004 ^NMS , as ^H834 ^RPRO he promised ^H1696 , Adonijah ^H138 shall be put to death ^H4191 this day ^H3117 ^D-AMS .

25 And king ^H4428 ^D-NMS Solomon ^H8010 ^MMS sent ^H7971 ^W-VQY3MS by the hand ^H3027 ^B-CFS of Benaiah ^H1141 the son ^H1121 ^CMS of Jehoiada ^H3077 ; and he fell ^H6293 upon him that he died ^H4191 ^W-VQY3MS .

26 And unto Abiathar ^H54 the priest ^H3548 said ^H559 ^VQQ3MS the king ^H4428 ^D-NMS , Get ^H1980 ^VQI2MS thee to Anathoth ^H6068 , unto ^H5921 ^PREP thine own fields ^H7704 ; for ^H3588 ^CONJ thou ^H859 ^PPRO-2MS art worthy ^H376 ^NMS of death ^H4194 ^NMS : but I will not ^H3808 ^NADV at this ^H2088 ^D-PMS time ^H3117 put thee to death ^H4191 , because ^H3588 ^CONJ thou didst bear ^H5375 the ark ^H727 of the Lord ^H136 ^EDS GOD ^H3068 before ^H6440 ^L-CMP David ^H1732 ^MMS my father ^H1 ^CMS-1MS , and because ^H3588 ^CONJ thou hast been afflicted ^H6031 in all ^H3605 wherein ^H834 ^RPRO my father ^H1 was afflicted ^H6031 .

27 So Solomon ^H8010 ^MMS thrust out ^H1644 ^W-VPQ3MS Abiathar ^H54 from being priest ^H3548 unto the LORD ^H3068 ^L-EDS ; that he might fulfill ^H4390 ^L-VPFC the word ^H1697 ^CMS of the LORD ^H3068 ^EDS , which ^H834 ^RPRO he spoke ^H1696 ^VPQ3MS concerning ^H5921 ^PREP the house ^H1004 ^CMS of Eli ^H5941 in Shiloh ^H7887 .

28 Then tidings ^H8052 came ^H935 ^VQQ3FS to ^H5704 ^PREP Joab ^H3097 : for ^H3588 ^CONJ Joab ^H3097 had turned ^H5186 ^VQQ3MS after ^H310 ^PREP Adonijah ^H138 , though he turned ^H5186 ^VQQ3MS not ^H3808 ^NADV after ^H310 Absalom ^H53 . And Joab ^H3097 fled ^H5127 unto ^H413 ^PREP the tabernacle ^H168 ^NMS of the LORD ^H3068 ^EDS , and caught hold ^H2388 on the horns ^H7161 of the altar ^H4196 .

29 And it was told ^H5046 king ^H4428 Solomon ^H8010 ^MMS that ^H3588 ^CONJ Joab ^H3097 was fled ^H5127 unto ^H413 ^PREP the tabernacle ^H168 ^NMS of the LORD ^H3068 ^EDS ; and , behold ^H2009 ^IJEC , he is by ^H681 the altar ^H4196 ^D-NMS . Then Solomon ^H8010 ^MMS sent ^H7971 ^W-VQY3MS Benaiah ^H1141 the son ^H1121 ^CMS of Jehoiada ^H3077 , saying ^H559 ^L-VQFC , Go ^H1980 ^VQI2MS , fall ^H6293 upon him .

30 And Benaiah ^H1141 came ^H935 ^W-VQY3MS to ^H413 ^PREP the tabernacle ^H168 ^NMS of the LORD ^H3068 ^EDS , and said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS unto ^H413 ^PREP-3MS him , Thus ^H3541 saith ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS the king ^H4428 ^D-NMS , Come forth ^H3318 ^VQI2MS . And he said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS , Nay ^H3808 ^NPAR ; but ^H3588 ^CONJ I will die ^H4191 ^VQY1MS here ^H6311 . And Benaiah ^H1141 brought ^H7725 ^W-VHY3MS the king ^H4428 ^D-NMS word ^H1697 ^VQPMS again , saying ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS , Thus ^H3541 said ^H1696 Joab ^H3097 , and thus ^H3541 he answered ^H6030 me .

31 And the king ^H4428 ^D-NMS said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS unto him , Do ^H6213 ^VQI2MS as ^H834 ^RPRO he hath said ^H1696 ^VPQ3MS , and fall ^H6293 upon him , and bury ^H6912 him ; that thou mayest take away ^H5493 the innocent ^H2600 ^ADV blood ^H1818 ^CMP , which ^H834 ^RPRO Joab ^H3097 shed ^H8210 , from ^M-PREP-1MS me , and from ^M-PREP-1MS the house ^H1004 ^CMS of my father ^H1 .

32 And the LORD ^H3068 ^EDS shall return ^H7725 his blood ^H1818 ^CMS-3MS upon ^H5921 ^PREP his own head ^H7218 ^CMS-3MS , who ^H834 ^RPRO fell ^H6293 upon two ^H8147 men ^H376 ^NMP more righteous ^H6662 and better ^H2896 than ^H4480 ^M-PREP-3MS he , and slew ^H2026 them with the sword ^H2719 , my father ^H1 David ^H1732 not ^H3808 ^NADV knowing ^H3045 thereof , to wit , Abner ^H74 the son ^H1121 ^CMS of Ner ^H5369 , captain ^H8269 of the host ^H6635 of Israel ^H3478 , and Amasa ^H6021 the son ^H1121 ^CMS of Jether ^H3500 , captain ^H8269 of the host ^H6635 of Judah ^H3063 .

33 Their blood ^H1818 shall therefore return ^H7725 upon the head ^H7218 ^B-NMS of Joab ^H3097 , and upon the head ^H7218 of his seed ^H2233 ^NMS-3MS forever ^H5769 ^L-NMS : but upon David ^H1732 , and upon his seed ^H2233 , and upon his house ^H1004 , and upon his throne ^H3678 , shall there be ^H1961 ^VQY3MS peace ^H7965 ^NMS forever ^H5704 ^PREP from ^M-PREP the LORD ^H3068 ^NAME-4MS .

34 So Benaiah ^H1141 the son ^H1121 of Jehoiada ^H3077 went up ^H5927 ^W-VHY3MS , and fell ^H6293 upon him , and slew ^H4191 him : and he was buried ^H6912 in his own house ^H1004 ^B-CMS-3MS in the wilderness ^H4057 .

35 And the king ^H4428 ^D-NMS put ^H5414 ^W-VQQ3MS Benaiah ^H1141 the son ^H1121 ^CMS of Jehoiada ^H3077 in his room ^H8478 ^NMS over ^H5921 ^PREP the host ^H6635 : and Zadok ^H6659 the priest ^H3548 did the king ^H4428 ^D-NMS put ^H5414 ^VQQ3MS in the room ^H8478 ^NMS of Abiathar ^H54 .

37 For it shall be ^H1961 ^W-VQQ3MS , that on the day ^H3117 ^B-NMS thou goest out ^H3318 , and passest over ^H5674 the brook ^H5158 ^NMS Kidron ^H6939 , thou shalt know ^H3045 for certain ^H3045 that ^H3588 ^CONJ thou shalt surely die ^H4191 ^VQFA : thy blood ^H1818 shall be ^H1961 ^W-VQQ3MS upon thine own head ^H7218 .

38 And Shimei ^H8096 said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS unto the king ^H4428 , The saying ^H1697 ^D-NMS is good ^H2896 ^AMS : as ^H834 ^K-RPRO my lord ^H113 the king ^H4428 ^D-NMS hath said ^H1696 ^VPQ3MS , so ^H3651 ^ADV will thy servant ^H5650 do ^H6213 ^VQY3MS . 39 And it came to pass ^H1961 ^W-VQY3MS at the end ^H7093 ^M-CMS of three ^H7969 ^MFS years ^H8141 ^NFP , that two ^H8147 of the servants ^H5650 ^NMP of Shimei ^H8096 ran away ^H1272 unto ^H413 ^PREP Achish ^H397 son ^H1121 of Maachah ^H4601 king ^H4428 ^NMS of Gath ^H1661 . And they told ^H5046 Shimei ^H8096 , saying ^H559 ^L-VQFC , Behold ^H2009 ^IJEC , thy servants ^H5650 be in Gath ^H1661 .

42 And the king ^H4428 ^D-NMS sent ^H7971 ^W-VQY3MS and called ^H7121 ^W-VQY3MS for Shimei ^H8096 , and said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS unto ^H413 ^PREP-3MS him , Did I not ^H3808 ^D-NPAR make thee to swear ^H7650 by the LORD ^H3068 , and protested ^H5749 unto thee , saying ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS , Know for a certain ^H3045 , on the day ^H3117 ^B-NMS thou goest out ^H3318 , and walkest abroad ^H1980 any ^H575 whither ^H575 , that ^H3588 ^CONJ thou shalt surely die ^H4191 ^VQFA ? and thou saidst ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS unto ^H413 ^PREP-1MS me , The word ^H1697 ^D-NMS that I have heard ^H8085 is good ^H2896 ^AMS .

44 The king ^H4428 ^D-NMS said ^H559 ^W-VQY3MS moreover to ^H413 ^PREP Shimei ^H8096 , Thou ^H859 ^PPRO-2MS knowest ^H3045 ^VQQ2MS all ^H3605 ^NMS the wickedness ^H7451 ^D-AFS which ^H834 ^RPRO thine heart ^H3824 is privy to ^H3045 ^VQQ2MS , that ^H834 ^RPRO thou didst ^H6213 ^VQQ2MS to David ^H1732 ^L-NAME my father ^H1 ^CMS-1MS : therefore the LORD ^H3068 ^EDS shall return ^H7725 thy wickedness ^H7451 upon thine own head ^H7218 ;

45 And king ^H4428 Solomon ^H8010 ^MMS shall be blessed ^H1288 ^VWQ3MS , and the throne ^H3678 of David ^H1732 shall be ^H1961 ^VQY3MS established ^H3559 ^NMS before ^H6440 ^L-CMP the LORD ^H3068 ^EDS forever ^H5704 ^PREP .

46 So the king ^H4428 ^D-NMS commanded ^H6680 ^W-VPY3MS Benaiah ^H1141 the son ^H1121 of Jehoiada ^H3077 ; which went out ^H3318 ^W-VQY3MS , and fell ^H6293 upon him , that he died ^H4191 . And the kingdom ^H4467 was established ^H3559 in the hand ^H3027 ^B-CFS of Solomon ^H8010 .
