Judges 6:1 (AMP) Amplified Bibles

1 BUT THE Israelites did evil in the sight of the Lord, and the Lord gave them into the hand of Midian for seven years.
2 And the hand of Midian prevailed against Israel. Because of Midian the Israelites made themselves the dens which are in the mountains and the caves and the strongholds.
3 For whenever Israel had sown their seed, the Midianites and the Amalekites and the people of the east came up against them.
4 They would encamp against them and destroy the crops as far as Gaza and leave no nourishment for Israel, and no ox or sheep or donkey.
5 For they came up with their cattle and their tents, and they came like locusts for multitude; both they and their camels could not be counted. So they wasted the land as they entered it.
6 And Israel was greatly impoverished because of the Midianites, and the Israelites cried to the Lord.
7 And when they cried to the Lord because of Midian,
8 The Lord sent a prophet to the Israelites, who said to them, Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, I brought you up from Egypt and brought you forth out of the house of bondage.
9 And I delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians and out of the hand of all who oppressed you, and drove them out from before you and gave you their land.
10 And I said to you, I am the Lord your God; fear not the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. But you have not obeyed My voice.
11 Now the Angel of the Lord came and sat under the oak (terebinth) at Ophrah, which belonged to Joash the Abiezrite, and his son Gideon was beating wheat in the winepress to hide it from the Midianites.
12 And the Angel of the Lord appeared to him and said to him, The Lord is with you, you mighty man of fearless courage.
13 And Gideon said to him, O sir, if the Lord is with us, why is all this befallen us? And where are all His wondrous works of which our fathers told us, saying, Did not the Lord bring us up from Egypt? But now the Lord has forsaken us and given us into the hand of Midian.
14 The Lord turned to him and said, Go in this your might, and you shall save Israel from the hand of Midian. Have I not sent you?
15 Gideon said to Him, Oh Lord, how can I deliver Israel? Behold, my clan is the poorest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father's house.
16 The Lord said to him, Surely I will be with you, and you shall smite the Midianites as one man.
17 Gideon said to Him, If now I have found favor in Your sight, then show me a sign that it is You Who talks with me.
18 Do not leave here, I pray You, until I return to You and bring my offering and set it before You. And He said, I will wait until you return.
19 Then Gideon went in and prepared a kid and unleavened cakes of an ephah of flour. The meat he put in a basket and the broth in a pot, and brought them to Him under the oak and presented them.
20 And the Angel of God said to him, Take the meat and unleavened cakes and lay them on this rock and pour the broth over them. And he did so.
21 Then the Angel of the Lord reached out the tip of the staff that was in His hand, and touched the meat and the unleavened cakes, and there flared up fire from the rock and consumed the meat and the unleavened cakes. Then the Angel of the Lord vanished from his sight.
22 And when Gideon perceived that He was the Angel of the Lord, Gideon said, Alas, O Lord God! For now I have seen the Angel of the Lord face to face!
23 The Lord said to him, Peace be to you, do not fear; you shall not die.
24 Then Gideon built an altar there to the Lord and called it, The Lord is Peace. To this day it still stands in Ophrah, which belongs to the Abiezrites.
25 That night the Lord said to Gideon, Take your father's bull, the second bull seven years old, and pull down the altar of Baal that your father has and cut down the Asherah symbol of the goddess Asherah that is beside it;
26 And build an altar to the Lord your God on top of this stronghold with stones laid in proper order. Then take the second bull and offer a burnt sacrifice with the wood of the Asherah which you shall cut down.
27 Then Gideon took ten men of his servants and did as the Lord had told him, but because he was too afraid of his father's household and the men of the city to do it by day, he did it by night.
28 And when the men of the city arose early in the morning, behold, the altar of Baal was cast down, and the Asherah was cut down that was beside it, and the second bull was offered on the altar which had been built.
29 And they said to one another, Who has done this thing? And when they searched and asked, they were told, Gideon son of Joash has done this thing.
30 Then the men of the city commanded Joash, Bring out your son, that he may die, for he has pulled down the altar of Baal and cut down the Asherah beside it.
31 But Joash said to all who stood against him, Will you contend for Baal? Or will you save him? He who will contend for Baal, let him be put to death while it is still morning. If Baal is a god, let him contend for himself because one has pulled down his altar.
32 Therefore on that day he called Gideon Jerubbaal, meaning, Let Baal contend against him, because he had pulled down his altar.
33 Then all the Midianites and the Amalekites and the people of the east came together and, crossing the Jordan, encamped in the Valley of Jezreel.
34 But the Spirit of the Lord clothed Gideon with Himself and took possession of him, and he blew a trumpet, and the clan of Abiezer was gathered to him.
35 And he sent messengers throughout all Manasseh, and the Manassites were called to follow him; and he sent messengers to Asher, to Zebulun, and to Naphtali, and they came up to meet them.
36 And Gideon said to God, If You will deliver Israel by my hand as You have said,
37 Behold, I will put a fleece of wool on the threshing floor. If there is dew on the fleece only and it is dry on all the ground, then I shall know that You will deliver Israel by my hand, as You have said.
38 And it was so. When he rose early next morning and squeezed the dew out of the fleece, he wrung from it a bowlful of water.
39 And Gideon said to God, Let not your anger be kindled against me, and I will speak but this once. Let me make trial only this once with the fleece, I pray you; let it now be dry only upon the fleece and upon all the ground let there be dew.
40 And God did so that night, for it was dry on the fleece only, and there was dew on all the ground.
1 And the children H1121 CMP of Israel H3478 did H6213 W-VQY3MP evil H7451 in the sight H5869 B-CMP of the LORD H3068 EDS : and the LORD H3068 EDS delivered H5414 them into the hand H3027 B-CFS of Midian H4080 seven H7651 MFS years H8141 .
2 And the hand H3027 CFS of Midian H4080 prevailed H5810 against H5921 PREP Israel H3478 : and because H6440 M-CMP of the Midianites H4080 the children H1121 of Israel H3478 made H6213 them the dens H4492 which H834 RPRO are in the mountains H2022 , and caves H4631 , and strongholds H4679 .
3 And so it was H1961 W-VQQ3MS , when H518 PART Israel H3478 had sown H2232 , that the Midianites H4080 came up H5927 , and the Amalekites H6003 , and the children H1121 W-CMP of the east H6924 NMS , even they came up H5927 against H5921 them ;
4 And they encamped H2583 W-VQY3MP against H5921 PREP-3MP them , and destroyed H7843 the increase H2981 CMS of the earth H776 D-GFS , till H5704 PREP thou come H935 unto Gaza H5804 LFS , and left H7604 no H3808 W-NPAR sustenance H4241 for Israel H3478 , neither sheep H7716 , nor ox H7794 , nor ass H2543 .
5 For H3588 CONJ they H1992 PPRO-3MP came up H5927 with their cattle H4735 and their tents H168 , and they came H935 as H1992 PPRO-3MP grasshoppers H697 for multitude H7230 LD-NMS ; for both they H1992 PPRO-3MP and their camels H1581 were without H369 NPAR number H4557 NMS : and they entered H935 W-VQY3MP into the land H776 BD-GFS to destroy H7843 it .
6 And Israel H3478 was greatly H3966 ADV impoverished H1809 because H6440 M-CMP of the Midianites H4080 ; and the children H1121 of Israel H3478 cried H2199 unto H413 PREP the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS .
7 And it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS , when H3588 CONJ the children H1121 of Israel H3478 cried H2199 unto H413 PREP the LORD H3068 EDS because of PREP the Midianites H4080 ,
8 That the LORD H3068 EDS sent H7971 W-VQY3MS a prophet H5030 unto H413 PREP the children H1121 of Israel H3478 , which said H559 W-VQY3MS unto them , Thus H3541 saith H559 W-VQY3MS the LORD H3068 EDS God H430 CDP of Israel H3478 , I H595 PPRO-1MS brought you up H5927 from Egypt H4714 M-TFS , and brought you forth out of the house H1004 of bondage H5650 ;
9 And I delivered H5337 you out of the hand H3027 M-GFS of the Egyptians H4714 , and out of the hand H3027 WM-GFS of all H3605 NMS that oppressed H3905 you , and drove them out H1644 from before H6440 you , and gave H5414 you their land H776 ;
10 And I said H559 unto you , I H589 PPRO-1MS am the LORD H3068 EDS your God H430 ; fear H3372 not H3808 NADV the gods H430 CDP of the Amorites H567 D-TMS , in whose H834 RPRO land H776 ye H859 PPRO-2MS dwell H3427 : but ye have not H3808 W-NADV obeyed H8085 my voice H6963 .
11 And there came H935 W-VQY3MS an angel H4397 of the LORD H3068 EDS , and sat H3427 W-VQY3MS under H8478 NMS an oak H424 which H834 RPRO was in Ophrah H6084 , that H834 RPRO pertained unto Joash H3101 the Abi H33 - ezrite : and his son H1121 CMS-3MS Gideon H1439 threshed H2251 wheat H2406 by the winepress H1660 , to hide H5127 it from M-CMP the Midianites H4080 .
12 And the angel H4397 of the LORD H3068 EDS appeared H7200 W-VNY3MS unto H413 PREP-3MS him , and said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP-3MS him , The LORD H3068 EDS is with H5973 PREP-2MS thee , thou mighty man H1368 AMS of valor H2428 .
13 And Gideon H1439 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP-3MS him , Oh H994 my Lord H113 , if the LORD H3068 EDS be H3426 with H5973 PREP-1MP us , why H4100 WL-IGAT then is all H3605 NMS this H2063 DPRO befallen H4672 us ? and where H346 W-IGAT be all H3605 NMS his miracles H6381 which H834 RPRO our fathers H1 told H5608 us of , saying H559 W-VQY3MS , Did not H3808 I-NADV the LORD H3068 EDS bring us up H5927 from Egypt H4714 M-TFS ? but now H6258 W-ADV the LORD H3068 EDS hath forsaken H5203 us , and delivered H5414 us into the hands H3709 of the Midianites H4080 .
14 And the LORD H3068 EDS looked H6437 upon H413 PREP-3MS him , and said H559 W-VQY3MS , Go in H1980 VQI2MS this H2088 DPRO thy might H3581 , and thou shalt save H3467 Israel H3478 from the hand H3709 M-CFS of the Midianites H4080 : have not H3808 I-NADV I sent H7971 thee ?
15 And he said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP-3MS him , Oh H994 my Lord H136 EDS , wherewith H4100 shall I save H3467 Israel H3478 ? behold H2009 IJEC , my family H504 is poor H1800 in Manasseh H4519 , and I H595 W-PPRO-1MS am the least H6810 in my father H1 \'s house H1004 B-CMS .
16 And the LORD H3068 EDS said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP-3MS him , Surely H3588 CONJ I will be H1961 VQY1MS with H5973 PREP-2FS thee , and thou shalt smite H5221 the Midianites H4080 as one H259 ONUM man H376 .
17 And he said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP-3MS him , If H518 PART now H4994 IJEC I have found H4672 VQQ1MS grace H2580 NMS in thy sight H5869 , then show H6213 me a sign H226 NMS that thou H7945 talkest H1696 VPPMS with H5973 PREP-1MS me .
18 Depart H4185 not H408 NPAR hence H2088 M-DPRO , I pray thee H4994 IJEC , until H5704 PREP I come H935 unto H413 PREP-2MS thee , and bring forth my present H4503 , and set H5117 it before H6440 L-CMP-2MS thee . And he said H559 W-VQY3MS , I H595 PPRO-1MS will tarry H3427 until H5704 PREP thou come again H7725 .
19 And Gideon H1439 went in H935 VQPMS , and made ready H6213 W-VQY3MS a kid H1423 , and unleavened cakes H4682 of an ephah H374 of flour H7058 : the flesh H1320 D-NMS he put H7760 VQQ3MS in a basket H5536 , and he put H7760 VQQ3MS the broth H4839 in a pot H6517 , and brought it out H3318 unto H413 PREP-3MS him under H413 PREP the oak H424 , and presented H5066 it .
20 And the angel H4397 of God H430 D-EDP said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP-3MS him , Take H3947 VQI2MS the flesh H1320 D-NMS and the unleavened cakes H4682 , and lay H5117 them upon H413 PREP this H1975 rock H5553 , and pour out H8210 the broth H4839 . And he did H6213 W-VQY3MS so H3651 ADV .
21 Then the angel H4397 of the LORD H3068 EDS put forth W-VQY3MS the end H7097 of the staff H4938 that H834 RPRO was in his hand H3027 B-CFS-3MS , and touched H5060 W-VQY3MS the flesh H1320 and the unleavened cakes H4682 ; and there rose up H5927 W-VHY2MS fire H784 out of H4480 PREP the rock H6697 , and consumed H398 W-VQY3FS the flesh H1320 D-NMS and the unleavened cakes H4682 . Then the angel H4397 of the LORD H3068 EDS departed H1980 VQQ3MS out of his sight H5869 .
22 And when Gideon H1439 perceived H7200 W-VIY3MS that H3588 CONJ he H1931 PPRO-3MS was an angel H4397 of the LORD H3068 EDS , Gideon H1439 said H559 W-VQY3MS , Alas H162 , O Lord H136 EDS GOD H3069 ! for H3588 CONJ because H5921 PREP I have seen H7200 W-VIY3MS an angel H4397 of the LORD H3068 EDS face H6440 NMP to H413 PREP face H6440 .
23 And the LORD H3068 EDS said H559 W-VQY3MS unto him , Peace H7965 NMS be unto thee ; fear H3372 not H408 NPAR : thou shalt not H3808 NADV die H4191 VQY2MS .
24 Then Gideon H1439 built H1129 W-VQY3MS an altar H4196 NMS there H8033 ADV unto the LORD H3068 L-EDS , and called H7121 W-VQY3MS it Jehovah H3073 - shalom : unto H5704 PREP this H2088 D-PMS day H3117 D-AMS it is yet H5750 in Ophrah H6084 of the Abi H33 - ezrites .
25 And it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS the same H1931 D-PPRO-3MS night H3915 , that the LORD H3068 EDS said H559 W-VQY3MS unto him , Take H3947 VQI2MS thy father H1 \'s young bullock H6499 , even the second H8145 D-ONUM bullock H6499 of seven H7651 MFS years H8141 NFP old , and throw down H2040 the altar H4196 of Baal H1168 that H834 RPRO thy father H1 hath , and cut down H3772 the grove H842 that H834 RPRO is by H5921 PREP-3MS it :
26 And build H1129 W-VQQ2MS an altar H4196 NMS unto the LORD H3068 L-EDS thy God H430 CMP-2MS upon H5921 PREP the top H7218 NMS of this H2088 D-PMS rock H4581 , in the ordered place H4634 , and take H3947 the second H8145 D-ONUM bullock H6499 , and offer H5927 a burnt sacrifice H5930 NFS with the wood H6086 of the grove H842 which H834 RPRO thou shalt cut down H3772 .
27 Then Gideon H1439 took H3947 W-VQY3MS ten H6235 men H376 NMP of his servants H5650 , and did H6213 W-VQY3MS as H834 K-RPRO the LORD H3068 EDS had said H1696 VPQ3MS unto H413 PREP-3MS him : and so it was H1961 W-VQY3MS , because H834 K-RPRO he feared H3372 VQQ3MS his father H1 CMS-3MS \'s household H1004 CMS , and the men H376 CMP of the city H5892 D-GFS , that he could not do H6213 W-VQY3MS it by day H3119 ADV , that he did H6213 W-VQY3MS it by night H3915 NMS .
28 And when the men H376 CMP of the city H5892 D-GFS arose early H7925 in the morning H1242 B-NMS , behold H2009 IJEC , the altar H4196 of Baal H1168 was cast down H5422 , and the grove H842 was cut down H3772 that H834 RPRO was by H5921 PREP-3MS it , and the second H8145 D-ONUM bullock H6499 was offered H5927 upon H5921 PREP-3MS the altar H4196 D-NMS that was built H1129 .
29 And they said H559 one H376 NMS to H413 PREP another H7453 NMS-3MS , Who H4310 IPRO hath done H6213 VQQ3MS this H2088 D-PMS thing H1697 D-NMS ? And when they inquired H1875 and asked H1245 , they said H559 W-VQY3MP , Gideon H1439 the son H1121 of Joash H3101 hath done H6213 VQQ3MS this H2088 D-PMS thing H1697 D-NMS .
30 Then the men H376 CMP of the city H5892 D-GFS said H559 W-VQY3MP unto H413 PREP Joash H3101 , Bring out H3318 thy son H1121 , that he may die H4191 : because H3588 CONJ he hath cast down H5422 the altar H4196 of Baal H1168 , and because H3588 CONJ he hath cut down H3772 the grove H842 that H834 RPRO was by H5921 it .
31 And Joash H3101 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto all H3605 that H834 RPRO stood H5975 VQQ3MP against H5921 PREP-3MS him , Will ye H859 plead H7378 for Baal H1168 ? will ye H859 PPRO-2MS save H3467 him ? he that H834 RPRO will plead H7378 VQY3MS for him , let him be put to death H4191 whilst H5704 PREP it is yet morning H1242 : if H518 PART he H1931 PPRO-3MS be a god H430 EDP , let him plead H7378 for himself , because H3588 CONJ one hath cast down H5422 his altar H4196 .
32 Therefore on that H1931 D-PPRO-3MS day H3117 he called H7121 W-VQY3MS him Jerubbaal H3378 , saying H559 L-VQFC , Let Baal H1168 plead H7378 against him , because H3588 CONJ he hath thrown down H5422 his altar H4196 .
33 Then all H3605 W-CMS the Midianites H4080 and the Amalekites H6003 and the children H1121 W-CMP of the east H6924 NMS were gathered H622 together H3162 ADV-3MS , and went over H5674 , and pitched H2583 in the valley H6010 B-CMS of Jezreel H3157 .
34 But the Spirit H7307 W-GFS of the LORD H3068 EDS came upon H3847 Gideon H1439 , and he blew H8628 a trumpet H7782 ; and Abi H44 - ezer was gathered H2199 after H310 him .
35 And he sent H7971 VQQ3MS messengers H4397 throughout all H3605 B-CMS Manasseh H4519 ; who H1931 PPRO-3MS also H1571 CONJ was gathered H2199 after H310 PREP-3MS him : and he sent H7971 VQQ3MS messengers H4397 unto Asher H836 , and unto Zebulun H2074 , and unto Naphtali H5321 ; and they came up H5927 to meet H7125 them .
36 And Gideon H1439 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP God H430 D-EDP , If H518 PART thou H3426 wilt save H3467 Israel H3478 by mine hand H3027 B-CFS-1MS , as H834 K-RPRO thou hast said H1696 ,
37 Behold H2009 IJEC , I H595 PPRO-1MS will put H3322 a fleece H1492 of wool H6785 in the floor H1637 ; and if H518 PART the dew H2919 be H1961 VQY3MS on H5921 PREP the fleece H1492 only H905 , and it be dry H2721 upon H5921 W-PREP all H3605 NMS the earth H776 D-GFS beside , then shall I know H3045 that H3588 CONJ thou wilt save H3467 Israel H3478 by mine hand H3027 B-CFS-1MS , as H834 K-RPRO thou hast said H1696 .
38 And it was H1961 W-VQY3MS so H3651 ADV : for he rose up early H7925 on the morrow H4283 , and thrust H2115 the fleece H1492 together H2115 , and wrung H4680 the dew H2919 out of H4480 PREP the fleece H1492 , a bowl H5602 full H4392 of water H4325 NMP .
39 And Gideon H1439 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP God H430 D-EDP , Let not H408 NPAR thine anger H639 be hot H2734 against me and I will speak H1696 W-VPI1MS but H389 ADV this once H6471 : let me prove H5254 , I pray thee H4994 IJEC , but H7535 ADV this once H6471 D-GFS with the fleece H1492 ; let it now H4994 IJEC be H1961 VPY3MS dry H2721 only H905 upon H413 PREP the fleece H1492 , and upon H5921 W-PREP all H3605 NMS the ground H776 D-GFS let there be H1961 VPY3MS dew H2919 .
40 And God H430 EDP did H6213 W-VQY3MS so H3651 ADV that H1931 D-PPRO-3MS night H3915 : for it was H1961 W-VQY3MS dry H2721 upon H413 PREP the fleece H1492 only H905 , and there was H1961 VQQ3MS dew H2919 NMS on H5921 W-PREP all H3605 NMS the ground H776 D-GFS .
