Ezekiel 33:1 (AMP) Amplified Bibles

1 AND THE word of the Lord came to me, saying,
2 Son of man, speak to your people the Israelite captives in Babylon and say to them, When I bring the sword upon a land and the people of the land take a man from among them and make him their watchman,
3 If when he sees the sword coming upon the land, he blows the trumpet and warns the people,
4 Then whoever hears the sound of the trumpet and does not take warning, and the sword comes and takes him away, his blood shall be upon his own head.
5 He heard the sound of the trumpet and did not take warning; his blood shall be upon himself. But he who takes warning shall save his life.
6 But if the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet and the people are not warned, and the sword comes and takes any one of them, he is taken away in and for his perversity and iniquity, but his blood will I require at the watchman's hand.
7 So you, son of man, I have made you a watchman for the house of Israel; therefore hear the word at My mouth and give them warning from Me.
8 When I say to the wicked, O wicked man, you shall surely die, and you do not speak to warn the wicked from his way, that wicked man shall die in his perversity and iniquity, but his blood will I require at your hand.
9 But if you warn the wicked to turn from his evil way and he does not turn from his evil way, he shall die in his iniquity, but you will have saved your life.
10 And you, son of man, say to the house of Israel, Thus you have said: Truly our transgressions and our sins are upon us, and we waste away because of them; how then can we live?
11 Say to them, As I live, says the Lord God, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but rather that the wicked turn from his way and live. Turn back, turn back from your evil ways, for why will you die, O house of Israel?
12 And you, son of man, say to your people, The uprightness and justice of the uncompromisingly righteous shall not deliver him in the day of his transgression; and as for the wicked lawlessness of the wicked lawless, he shall not fall because of it in the day that he turns from his wickedness, neither shall the rigidly upright and just be able to live because of his past righteousness in the day that he sins and misses the mark in keeping in harmony and right standing with God.
13 When I shall say to the uncompromisingly righteous that he shall surely live, and he trusts to his own righteousness to save him and commits iniquity (heinous sin), all his righteous deeds shall not be seriously remembered; but for his perversity and iniquity that he has committed he shall die.
14 Again, when I have said to the wicked, You shall surely die, if he turns from his sin and does that which is lawful and right--
15 If the wicked restores what he took in pledge, gives back what he had taken in robbery, walks in the statutes of life right relationship with God, without committing iniquity, he shall surely live; he shall not die.
16 None of his sins that he has committed shall be seriously remembered against him; he has done that which is lawful and right; he shall surely live.
17 Yet your people say, The way of the Lord is not perfect or even just; but as for them, it is their own way that is not perfect or even just.
18 When the righteous turns back from his uncompromising righteousness and commits perverseness and iniquity, he shall even die in and because of it.
19 But if the wicked turns back from his wickedness and does what is lawful and right, he shall live because of it.
20 Yet you say, The way of the Lord is not perfect or even just. O you house of Israel, I will judge you, every one according to his own ways!
21 In the twelfth year of our captivity in Babylon, in the tenth month, on the fifth day of the month, a man who had escaped out of Jerusalem came to me Ezekiel, saying, The city Jerusalem is taken.
22 Now the hand of the Lord had been upon me in the evening before this one who had escaped came, and He had opened my mouth in readiness for the fugitives coming to me in the morning, and my mouth was opened and I was no longer dumb.
23 Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying,
24 Son of man, those back in Palestine who inhabit those wastes of the ground of Israel are saying, Abraham was only one man and he inherited the land, but we are many; the land is surely given to us to possess as our inheritance.
25 Therefore say to them, Thus says the Lord God: You eat meat with the blood as an idolatrous rite and lift up your eyes to your filthy idols and shed blood; shall you then possess the land? Gen. 9:4; Lev. 3:17; 7:27; Acts 15:28, 29.
26 You stand upon your sword as your dependence; you commit abominations and each of you defiles your neighbor's wife; shall you then possess the land?
27 Say this to them, Thus says the Lord God: As I live, surely those who are in the waste places shall fall by the sword, and him that is in the open field will I give to the beasts to be devoured, and those who are in strongholds and in caves shall die by pestilence.
28 And I will make the land of Israel a desolation and a waste, and her proud might shall cease, and the mountains of Israel shall be so desolate that no one will pass through them.
29 Then shall they know, understand, and realize that I am the Lord, when I have made the land a desolation and a waste because of all their abominations which they have committed.
30 As for you, son of man, your people who talk of you by the walls and in the doors of the houses say one to another, every one to his brother, Come and hear what the word is that comes forth from the Lord.
31 And they come to you as people come, and they sit before you as My people, and they hear the words you say, but they will not do them; for with their mouths they show much love, but their hearts go after and are set on their idolatrous greed for gain.
32 Behold, you are to them as a very lovely love song of one who has a pleasant voice and can play well on an instrument, for they hear your words but do not do them.
33 When this comes to pass--for behold, it will come!--then shall they know, understand, and realize that a prophet has been among them.

2 Son H1121 of man H120 NMS , speak H1696 VPFC to H413 PREP the children H1121 of thy people H5971 , and say H559 unto H413 PREP them , When H3588 CONJ I bring H935 the sword H2719 NFS upon H5921 PREP-3FS a land H776 GFS , if the people H5971 NMS of the land H776 D-GFS take H3947 a H259 MMS man H376 NMS of their coasts H7097 , and set H5414 him for their watchman H6822 :
3 If when he seeth H7200 the sword H2719 D-GFS come H935 VQQ3FS upon H5921 PREP the land H776 D-GFS , he blow H8628 the trumpet H7782 , and warn H2094 the people H5971 D-NMS ;
4 Then whosoever heareth H8085 the sound H6963 CMS of the trumpet H7782 , and taketh not warning H2094 ; if the sword H2719 GFS come H935 W-VQY3FS , and take him away H3947 , his blood H1818 CMS-3MS shall be H1961 upon his own head H7218 .
5 He heard H8085 the sound H6963 CMS of the trumpet H7782 , and took not warning H2094 ; his blood H1818 CMS-3MS shall be H1961 VQY3MS upon him . But he H1931 W-PPRO-3MS that taketh warning H2094 shall deliver H4422 his soul H5315 NMS-3MS .
6 But if H3588 CONJ the watchman H6822 see H7200 VQY3MS the sword H2719 D-GFS come H935 VQQ3FS , and blow H8628 not H3808 ADV the trumpet H7782 , and the people H5971 be not H3808 ADV warned H2094 ; if the sword H2719 GFS come H935 W-VQY3FS , and take H3947 W-VQY3FS any person H5315 from among H4480 them , he H1931 PPRO-3MS is taken away H3947 in his iniquity H5771 ; but his blood H1818 will I require H1875 at the watchman H6822 \'s hand H3027 .
7 So thou H859 W-PPRO-2MS , O son H1121 CMS of man H120 NMS , I have set H5414 thee a watchman H6822 unto the house H1004 of Israel H3478 ; therefore thou shalt hear H8085 the word H1697 VQPMS at my mouth H6310 M-CMS , and warn H2094 them from H4480 PREP-1MS me .
8 When I say H559 unto the wicked H7563 , O wicked H7563 AMS man , thou shalt surely die H4191 VQFA ; if thou dost not H3808 W-NPAR speak H1696 to warn H2094 the wicked H7563 AMS from his way H1870 M-CMS-3MS , that H1931 PPRO-3MS wicked H7563 AMS man shall die H4191 VQY2MS in his iniquity H5771 ; but his blood H1818 will I require H1245 at thine hand H3027 M-CFS-2MS .
9 Nevertheless , if H3588 CONJ thou H859 W-PPRO-2MS warn H2094 the wicked H7563 AMS of his way H1870 M-CMS-3MS to turn H7725 from H4480 M-PREP-3FS it ; if he do not H3808 W-NPAR turn H7725 VQQ3MS from his way H1870 M-CMS-3MS , he H1931 PPRO-3MS shall die H4191 VQY3MS in his iniquity H5771 ; but thou H859 W-PPRO-2MS hast delivered H5337 thy soul H5315 .
10 Therefore , O thou H859 W-PPRO-2MS son H1121 CMS of man H120 NMS , speak H559 unto H413 PREP the house H1004 CMS of Israel H3478 ; Thus H3651 ADV ye speak H559 , saying H559 L-VQFC , If H3588 CONJ our transgressions H6588 and our sins H2403 be upon H5921 PREP-1MP us , and we H587 PPRO-1MP pine away H4743 in them , how H349 W-IJEC should we then live H2421 ?
11 Say H559 unto H413 PREP-3MP them , As I H589 PPRO-1MS live H2416 AMS , saith H5002 the Lord H136 EDS GOD H3069 , I have no pleasure H2654 in the death H4194 of the wicked H7563 ; but H518 PART that the wicked H7563 AMS turn H7725 from his way H1870 M-CMS-3MS and live H2421 : turn H7725 ye , turn H7725 ye from your evil H7451 ways H1870 ; for why H4100 WL-IGAT will ye die H4191 , O house H1004 CMS of Israel H3478 LMS ?
12 Therefore , thou H859 W-PPRO-2MS son H1121 CMS of man H120 NMS , say H559 unto H413 PREP the children H1121 of thy people H5971 , The righteousness H6666 of the righteous H6662 shall not H3808 NADV deliver H5337 him in the day H3117 B-NMS of his transgression H6588 : as for the wickedness H7564 of the wicked H7563 , he shall not H3808 ADV fall H3782 thereby in the day H3117 B-NMS that he turneth H7725 VQFC-3MS from his wickedness H7562 ; neither H3808 NADV shall the righteous H6662 W-AMS be able H3201 VQY3MS to live H2421 for his righteousness in the day H3117 B-NMS that he sinneth H2398 .
13 When I shall say H559 to the righteous H6662 , that he shall surely live H2421 ; if he H1931 W-PPRO-3MS trust H982 to H5921 PREP his own righteousness H6666 , and commit H6213 W-VQQ3MS iniquity H5766 NMS , all H3605 NMS his righteousnesses H6666 shall not H3808 NADV be remembered H2142 ; but for his iniquity H5766 that H834 RPRO he hath committed H6213 W-VQQ3MS , he shall die H4191 for it .
14 Again , when I say H559 unto the wicked H7563 , Thou shalt surely die H4191 VQFA ; if he turn H7725 W-VQQ3MS from his sin H2403 , and do H6213 W-VQQ3MS that which is lawful H4941 NMS and right H6666 ;
15 If the wicked H7563 AMS restore H7725 VHY3MS the pledge H2258 , give again H7999 VPY3MS that he had robbed H1500 , walk H1980 VQQ3MS in the statutes H2708 of life H2416 D-NMP , without H1115 L-NPAR committing H6213 VQFC iniquity H5766 NMS ; he shall surely live H2421 , he shall not H3808 NADV die H4191 .
16 None H3808 NADV of his sins H2403 that H834 RPRO he hath committed H2398 VQQ3MS shall be mentioned H2142 unto him : he hath done H6213 VQQ3MS that which is lawful H4941 NMS and right H6666 ; he shall surely live H2421 .
17 Yet the children H1121 of thy people H5971 say H559 W-VQQ3MP , The way H1870 NMS of the Lord H136 EDS is not equal H8505 : but as for them H1992 , their way H1870 NMS is not equal H8505 .
18 When the righteous H6662 AMS turneth H7725 from his righteousness H6666 , and committeth H6213 W-VQQ3MS iniquity H5766 NMS , he shall even die H4191 thereby .
19 But if the wicked H7563 AMS turn H7725 from his wickedness H7564 , and do H6213 W-VQQ3MS that which is lawful H4941 NMS and right H6666 , he H1931 PPRO-3MS shall live H2421 thereby H5921 PREP-3MP .
20 Yet ye say H559 , The way H1870 NMS of the Lord H136 EDS is not equal H8505 . O ye house H1004 CMS of Israel H3478 LMS , I will judge H8199 you every one H376 NMS after his ways H1870 NMS .
21 And it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS in the twelfth H8147 year H8141 NFS of our captivity H1546 , in the tenth H6224 month , in the fifth H2568 day of the month H2320 LD-NMS , that one that had escaped H6412 D-NMS out of Jerusalem H3389 came H935 VQPMS unto H413 PREP-1MS me , saying H559 L-VQFC , The city H5892 D-GFS is smitten H5221 .
22 Now the hand H3027 of the LORD H3068 EDS was H1961 VQQ3FS upon H413 PREP-1MS me in the evening H6153 , before H6440 L-CMP he that was escaped H6412 D-NMS came H935 VQFC ; and had opened H6605 W-VQY3MS my mouth H6310 , until H5704 PREP he came H935 VQFC to H413 PREP-1MS me in the morning H1242 B-NMS ; and my mouth H6310 was opened H6605 , and I was no more dumb H481 .
23 Then the word H1697 NMS of the LORD H3068 EDS came H1961 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP-1MS me , saying H559 L-VQFC ,
24 Son H1121 of man H120 NMS , they that inhabit H3427 those H428 D-DPRO-3MP wastes H2723 of H5921 PREP the land H127 of Israel H3478 speak H559 , saying H559 L-VQFC , Abraham H85 was H1961 VQQ3MS one H259 MMS , and he inherited H3423 the land H776 D-GFS : but we H587 are many H7227 AMP ; the land H776 D-GFS is given H5414 VNQ3FS us for inheritance H4181 .
25 Wherefore H3651 L-ADV say H559 unto H413 PREP them , Thus H3541 saith H559 VQQ3MS the Lord H136 EDS GOD H3069 ; Ye eat H398 with H5921 PREP the blood H1818 , and lift up H5375 your eyes H5869 toward H413 PREP your idols H1544 , and shed H8210 blood H1818 : and shall ye possess H3423 the land H776 WD-GFS ?
26 Ye stand H5975 upon H5921 PREP your sword H2719 , ye work H6213 abomination H8441 , and ye defile H2930 every one H376 W-NMS his neighbor H7453 NMS-3MS \'s wife H802 CFS : and shall ye possess H3423 the land H776 WD-GFS ?
27 Say H559 VQY2MS thou thus H3541 unto H413 PREP-3MS them , Thus H3541 saith H559 VQQ3MS the Lord H136 EDS GOD H3069 ; As I H589 PPRO-1MS live H2416 AMS , surely H518 PART they that H834 RPRO are in the wastes H2723 shall fall H5307 by the sword H2719 , and him that H834 RPRO is in H5921 PREP the open H6440 CMP field H7704 D-NMS will I give H5414 to the beasts H2416 to be devoured H398 , and they that H834 RPRO be in the forts H4679 and in the caves H4631 shall die H4191 of the pestilence H1698 .
28 For I will lay H5414 the land H776 D-GFS most desolate H8077 , and the pomp H1347 CMS of her strength H5797 shall cease H7673 ; and the mountains H2022 CMP of Israel H3478 shall be desolate H8074 , that none H369 shall pass through H5674 .
29 Then shall they know H3045 that H3588 CONJ I H589 PPRO-1MS am the LORD H3068 EDS , when I have laid H5414 the land H776 D-GFS most desolate H8077 because of H5921 PREP all H3605 NMS their abominations H8441 which H834 RPRO they have committed H6213 .
30 Also , thou H859 W-PPRO-2MS son H1121 CMS of man H120 NMS , the children H1121 CMS of thy people H5971 still are talking H1696 against thee by H681 the walls H7023 and in the doors H6607 of the houses H1004 , and speak H1696 one H2297 to H854 PREP another H259 , every one H376 NMS to H854 PREP his brother H251 CMS-3MS , saying H559 L-VQFC , Come H935 , I pray you H4994 IJEC , and hear H8085 what H4100 IGAT is the word H1697 D-NMS that cometh forth H3318 from PREP the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS .
31 And they come H935 unto H413 PREP-2MS thee as the people H5971 NMS cometh H3996 , and they sit H3427 before H6440 L-CMP-2MS thee as my people H5971 , and they hear H8085 thy words H1697 , but they will not H3808 NADV do H6213 them : for H3588 CONJ with their mouth H6310 B-CMS-3MP they H1992 PPRO-3MP show H6213 much love H5690 , but their heart H3820 CMS-3MP goeth H1980 VQPMS after H310 PREP their covetousness H1215 .
32 And , lo H2009 , thou art unto them as a very lovely H5690 song H7892 of one that hath a pleasant H3303 voice H6963 CMS , and can play well on an instrument H5059 : for they hear H8085 thy words H1697 , but they do H6213 them not H369 .
33 And when this cometh to pass H935 , ( IJEC lo H2009 IJEC , it will come H935 , ) then shall they know H3045 that H3588 CONJ a prophet H5030 hath been H1961 VQQ3MS among H8432 them .
