Romans 4:1 (AMP) Amplified Bibles

1 BUT IF so, what shall we say about Abraham, our forefather humanly speaking--what did he find out? How does this affect his position, and what was gained by him?
2 For if Abraham was justified (established as just by acquittal from guilt) by good works that he did, then he has grounds for boasting. But not before God!
3 For what does the Scripture say? Abraham believed in (trusted in) God, and it was credited to his account as righteousness (right living and right standing with God). Gen. 15:6.
4 Now to a laborer, his wages are not counted as a favor or a gift, but as an obligation (something owed to him).
5 But to one who, not working by the Law, trusts (believes fully) in Him Who justifies the ungodly, his faith is credited to him as righteousness (the standing acceptable to God).
6 Thus David congratulates the man and pronounces a blessing on him to whom God credits righteousness apart from the works he does:
7 Blessed and happy and to be envied are those whose iniquities are forgiven and whose sins are covered up and completely buried.
8 Blessed and happy and to be envied is the person of whose sin the Lord will take no account nor reckon it against him. Ps. 32:1, 2.
9 Is this blessing (happiness) then meant only for the circumcised, or also for the uncircumcised? We say that faith was credited to Abraham as righteousness.
10 How then was it credited to him? Was it before or after he had been circumcised? It was not after, but before he was circumcised.
11 He received the mark of circumcision as a token or an evidence and seal of the righteousness which he had by faith while he was still uncircumcised--faith so that he was to be made the father of all who truly believe, though without circumcision, and who thus have righteousness (right standing with God) imputed to them and credited to their account,
12 As well as that he be made the father of those circumcised persons who are not merely circumcised, but also walk in the way of that faith which our father Abraham had before he was circumcised.
13 For the promise to Abraham or his posterity, that he should inherit the world, did not come through observing the commands of the Law but through the righteousness of faith. Gen. 17:4-6; 22:16-18.
14 If it is the adherents of the Law who are to be the heirs, then faith is made futile and empty of all meaning and the promise of God is made void (is annulled and has no power).
15 For the Law results in divine wrath, but where there is no law there is no transgression of it either.
16 Therefore, inheriting the promise is the outcome of faith and depends entirely on faith, in order that it might be given as an act of grace (unmerited favor), to make it stable and valid and guaranteed to all his descendants--not only to the devotees and adherents of the Law, but also to those who share the faith of Abraham, who is thus the father of us all.
17 As it is written, I have made you the father of many nations. He was appointed our father in the sight of God in Whom he believed, Who gives life to the dead and speaks of the nonexistent things that He has foretold and promised as if they already existed. Gen. 17:5.
18 For Abraham, human reason for hope being gone, hoped in faith that he should become the father of many nations, as he had been promised, So numberless shall your descendants be. Gen. 15:5.
19 He did not weaken in faith when he considered the utter impotence of his own body, which was as good as dead because he was about a hundred years old, or when he considered the barrenness of Sarah's deadened womb. Gen. 17:17; 18:11.
20 No unbelief or distrust made him waver (doubtingly question) concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong and was empowered by faith as he gave praise and glory to God,
21 Fully satisfied and assured that God was able and mighty to keep His word and to do what He had promised.
22 That is why his faith was credited to him as righteousness (right standing with God).
23 But the words, It was credited to him, were written not for his sake alone,
24 But they were written for our sakes too. Righteousness, standing acceptable to God will be granted and credited to us also who believe in (trust in, adhere to, and rely on) God, Who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead,
25 Who was betrayed and put to death because of our misdeeds and was raised to secure our justification (our acquittal), making our account balance and absolving us from all guilt before God.

2 For G1063 CONJ if G1487 COND Abraham G11 N-PRI were justified G1344 V-API-3S by G1537 PREP works G2041 N-GPN , he hath G2192 V-PAI-3S whereof to glory G2745 N-ASN ; but G235 CONJ not G3756 PRT-N before G4314 PREP God G2316 N-ASM .
3 For G1063 CONJ what G5101 I-ASN saith G3004 V-PAI-3S the G3588 T-NSF Scripture G1124 N-NSF ? Abraham G11 N-PRI believed G4100 V-AAI-3S God G2316 N-DSM , and G2532 CONJ it was counted G3049 V-API-3S unto him G846 P-DSM for G1519 PREP righteousness G1343 N-ASF .
4 Now G1161 CONJ to him that worketh G2038 V-PNP-DSM is the G3588 T-NSM reward G3408 N-NSM not G3756 PRT-N reckoned G3049 V-PNI-3S of G2596 PREP grace G5485 N-ASF , but G235 CONJ of G2596 PREP debt G3783 N-ASN .
5 But G1161 CONJ to him that worketh G2038 V-PNP-DSM not G3361 PRT-N , but G1161 CONJ believeth G4100 V-PAP-DSM on G1909 PREP him that justifieth G1344 V-PAP-ASM the G3588 T-ASM ungodly G765 A-ASM , his G3588 T-NSF faith G4102 N-NSF is counted G3049 V-PNI-3S for G1519 PREP righteousness G1343 N-ASF .
6 Even as G2509 ADV David G1138 N-PRI also G2532 CONJ describeth G3004 V-PAI-3S the G3588 T-ASM blessedness G3108 N-ASM of G3588 T-GSM the G3588 T-GSM man G444 N-GSM , unto whom G3588 T-NSM God G2316 N-NSM imputeth G3049 V-PNI-3S righteousness G1343 N-ASF without G5565 ADV works G2041 N-GPN ,
7 Saying , Blessed G3107 A-NPM are they G3588 T-NPF whose G3739 R-GPM iniquities G458 N-NPF are forgiven G863 V-API-3P , and G2532 CONJ whose G3739 R-GPM sins G266 N-NPF are covered G1943 V-API-3P .
8 Blessed G3107 A-NSM is the man G435 N-NSM to whom G3739 R-DSM the Lord G2962 N-NSM will not G3364 impute G3049 V-ADS-3S sin G266 N-ASF .
9 Cometh this G3588 T-NSM blessedness G3108 N-NSM then G3767 CONJ upon G1909 PREP the G3588 T-ASF circumcision G4061 N-ASF only , or G2228 PRT upon G1909 PREP the G3588 T-ASF uncircumcision G203 N-ASF also G2532 CONJ ? for G1063 CONJ we say G3004 V-PAI-1P that G3588 T-NSF faith G4102 N-NSF was reckoned G3049 V-API-3S to Abraham G11 N-PRI for G1519 PREP righteousness G1343 N-ASF .
10 How G4459 ADV-I was it then G3767 CONJ reckoned G3049 V-API-3S ? when he was G5607 V-PXP-DSM in G1722 PREP circumcision G4061 N-DSF , or G2228 PRT in G1722 PREP uncircumcision G203 N-DSF ? Not G3756 PRT-N in G1722 PREP circumcision G4061 N-DSF , but G235 CONJ in G1722 PREP uncircumcision G203 N-DSF .
11 And G2532 CONJ he received G2983 V-2AAI-3S the sign G4592 N-ASN of circumcision G4061 N-GSF , a seal G4973 N-ASF of G3588 T-GSF the G3588 T-GSF righteousness G1343 N-GSF of G3588 T-GSF the G3588 T-GSF faith G4102 N-GSF which G3588 T-GSF he had yet being uncircumcised : that PREP he G3588 T-ASN might be G1511 V-PXN the father G3962 N-ASM of G3588 T-GPM all G3956 A-GPM them that believe G4100 V-PAP-GPM , though they be not circumcised G203 N-DSF ; that G3588 T-ASN righteousness G1343 N-ASF might be imputed G3049 V-APN unto them G846 P-DPM also G2532 CONJ :
12 And G2532 CONJ the father G3962 N-ASM of circumcision G4061 N-GSF to them G3588 T-DPM who are not G3756 PRT-N of G1537 PREP the circumcision G4061 N-GSF only G3440 ADV , but G235 CONJ who also walk G4748 V-PAP-DPM in the G3588 T-DPN steps G2487 N-DPN of that faith G4102 N-GSF of G3588 T-GSM our G3588 T-GSM father G3962 N-GSM Abraham G11 N-PRI , which G3588 T-DSF he G3588 T-DSF had being yet uncircumcised G203 N-DSF .
13 For G1063 CONJ the G3588 T-NSF promise G1860 N-NSF , that he G846 P-GSM should be G1511 V-PXN the G3588 T-NSN heir G2818 N-ASM of G3588 T-GSM the G3588 T-GSM world G2889 N-GSM , was not G3756 PRT-N to Abraham G11 N-PRI , or G2228 PRT to his G3588 T-DSN seed G4690 N-DSN , through G1223 PREP the law G3551 N-GSM , but G235 CONJ through G1223 PREP the righteousness G1343 N-GSF of faith G4102 N-GSF .
14 For G1063 CONJ if G1487 COND they G3588 T-NPM which are of G1537 PREP the law G3551 N-GSM be heirs G2818 N-NPM , faith G4102 N-NSF is made void G2758 V-RPI-3S , and G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-NSF promise G1860 N-NSF made of none effect G2673 V-RPI-3S :
15 Because G1063 CONJ the G3588 T-NSM law G3551 N-NSM worketh G2716 V-PNI-3S wrath G3709 N-ASF : for G1063 CONJ where G3757 ADV no G3756 PRT-N law G3551 N-NSM is G2076 V-PXI-3S , there is no G3761 ADV transgression G3847 N-NSF .
16 Therefore G1223 PREP it is of G1537 PREP faith G4102 N-GSF , that G2443 CONJ it might be by G2596 PREP grace G5485 N-ASF ; to the G3588 T-ASF end the G3588 T-ASF promise G1860 N-ASF might be G1511 V-PXN sure G949 A-ASF to all G3956 A-DSN the G3588 T-DSN seed G4690 N-DSN ; not G3756 PRT-N to that G3588 T-DSN only G3440 ADV which is of G1537 PREP the G3588 T-GSM law G3551 N-GSM , but G235 CONJ to that G3588 T-GSM also G2532 CONJ which is of G1537 PREP the faith G4102 N-GSF of Abraham G11 N-PRI ; who G3739 R-NSM is G2076 V-PXI-3S the father G3962 N-NSM of us G2257 P-1GP all G3956 A-GPM ,
17 ( ADV As ADV it is written G1125 V-RPI-3S , I have made G5087 V-RAI-1S thee G4571 P-2AS a father G3962 N-ASM of many G4183 A-GPN nations G1484 N-GPN , ) before G2713 ADV him whom G3739 R-GSM he believed G4100 V-AAI-3S , even God G2316 N-GSM , who quickeneth G2227 V-PAP-GSM the G3588 T-APM dead G3498 A-APM , and G2532 CONJ calleth G2564 V-PAP-GSM those G3588 T-APN things which G3588 T-APN be G5607 V-PXP-APN not G3361 PRT-N as though G5613 ADV they were G5607 V-PXP-APN .
18 Who G3739 R-NSM against G3844 PREP hope G1680 N-ASF believed G4100 V-AAI-3S in G1909 PREP hope G1680 N-DSF , that G3588 T-ASN he G3588 T-ASN might become G1096 V-2ADN the father G3962 N-ASM of many G4183 A-GPN nations G1484 N-GPN , according G2596 PREP to that which was spoken G2046 V-RPP-ASN , So G3779 ADV shall thy G3588 T-NSN seed G4690 N-NSN be G2071 V-FXI-3S .
19 And G2532 CONJ being not weak G770 V-AAP-NSM in faith G4102 N-DSF , he considered G2657 V-AAI-3S not G3756 PRT-N his own G1438 F-3GSM body G4983 N-ASN now G2235 ADV dead G3499 V-RPP-ASN , when he was G5225 V-PAP-NSM about G4225 PRT a hundred years old G1541 A-NSM , neither G2532 CONJ yet the G3588 T-ASF deadness G3500 N-ASF of G3588 T-GSF Sarah G4564 N-GSF \'s womb G3388 N-GSF :
20 He G1161 CONJ staggered G1252 V-API-3S not G3756 PRT-N at G1519 PREP the G3588 T-ASF promise G1860 N-ASF of G3588 T-DSF God G2316 N-GSM through unbelief G570 N-DSF ; but G235 CONJ was strong G1743 V-API-3S in faith G4102 N-DSF , giving G1325 V-2AAP-NSM glory G1391 N-ASF to God G2316 N-DSM ;
21 And G2532 CONJ being fully persuaded G4135 V-APP-NSM that G3754 CONJ , what G3739 R-ASN he had promised G1861 V-RNI-3S , he was G2076 V-PXI-3S able G1415 A-NSM also G2532 CONJ to perform G4160 V-AAN .
22 And G2532 CONJ therefore G1352 CONJ it was imputed G3049 V-API-3S to him G846 P-DSM for G1519 PREP righteousness G1343 N-ASF .
23 Now G1161 CONJ it was not G3756 PRT-N written G1125 V-2API-3S for his sake G1223 PREP alone G3440 ADV , that G3754 CONJ it was imputed G3049 V-API-3S to him G846 P-ASM ;
24 But G235 CONJ for G1223 PREP us G2248 P-1AP also G2532 CONJ , to whom G3739 R-DPM it shall G3195 V-PAI-3S be imputed G3049 V-PPN , if we G3588 T-DPM believe G4100 V-PAP-DPM on G1909 PREP him that raised up G1453 V-AAP-ASM Jesus G2424 N-ASM our G3588 T-ASM Lord G2962 N-ASM from G1537 PREP the dead G3498 A-GPM ;
25 Who G3739 R-NSM was delivered G3860 V-API-3S for G1223 PREP our G3588 T-APN offenses G3900 N-APN , and G2532 CONJ was raised again G1453 V-API-3S for G1223 PREP our G3588 T-ASF justification G1347 N-ASF .
