Matthew 14:1 (AMP) Amplified Bibles

1 AT THAT time Herod the governor heard the reports about Jesus,
2 And he said to his attendants, This is John the Baptist; He has been raised from the dead, and that is why the powers of performing miracles are at work in Him.
3 For Herod had arrested John and bound him and put him in prison to stow him out of the way on account and for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife,
4 For John had said to him, It is not lawful or right for you to have her. Lev. 18:16; 20:21.
5 Although he wished to have him put to death, he was afraid of the people, for they regarded John as a prophet.
6 But when Herod's birthday came, the daughter of Herodias danced in the midst before the company and pleased and fascinated Herod,
7 And so he promised with an oath to give her whatever she might ask.
8 And she, being put forward and prompted by her mother, said, Give me the head of John the Baptist right here on a platter.
9 And the king was distressed and sorry, but because of his oaths and his guests, he ordered it to be given her;
10 He sent and had John beheaded in the prison.
11 And his head was brought in on a platter and given to the little maid, and she brought it to her mother.
12 And John's disciples came and took up the body and buried it. Then they went and told Jesus.
13 When Jesus heard it, He withdrew from there privately in a boat to a solitary place. But when the crowds heard of it, they followed Him by land on foot from the towns.
14 When He went ashore and saw a great throng of people, He had compassion (pity and deep sympathy) for them and cured their sick.
15 When evening came, the disciples came to Him and said, This is a remote and barren place, and the day is now over; send the throngs away into the villages to buy food for themselves.
16 Jesus said, They do not need to go away; you give them something to eat.
17 They said to Him, We have nothing here but five loaves and two fish.
18 He said, Bring them here to Me.
19 Then He ordered the crowds to recline on the grass; and He took the five loaves and the two fish, and, looking up to heaven, He gave thanks and blessed and broke the loaves and handed the pieces to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people.
20 And they all ate and were satisfied. And they picked up twelve small hand baskets full of the broken pieces left over.
21 And those who ate were about 5,000 men, not including women and children.
22 Then He directed the disciples to get into the boat and go before Him to the other side, while He sent away the crowds.
23 And after He had dismissed the multitudes, He went up into the hills by Himself to pray. When it was evening, He was still there alone.
24 But the boat was by this time out on the sea, many furlongs a furlong is one-eighth of a mile distant from the land, beaten and tossed by the waves, for the wind was against them.
25 And in the fourth watch between 3:00--6:00 a.m. of the night, Jesus came to them, walking on the sea.
26 And when the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were terrified and said, It is a ghost! And they screamed out with fright.
27 But instantly He spoke to them, saying, Take courage! I AM! Stop being afraid! Exod. 3:14.
28 And Peter answered Him, Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.
29 He said, Come! So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water, and he came toward Jesus.
30 But when he perceived and felt the strong wind, he was frightened, and as he began to sink, he cried out, Lord, save me from death!
31 Instantly Jesus reached out His hand and caught and held him, saying to him, O you of little faith, why did you doubt?
32 And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased.
33 And those in the boat knelt and worshiped Him, saying, Truly You are the Son of God!
34 And when they had crossed over to the other side, they went ashore at Gennesaret.
35 And when the men of that place recognized Him, they sent around into all the surrounding country and brought to Him all who were sick
36 And begged Him to let them merely touch the fringe of His garment; and as many as touched it were perfectly restored. Matt. 9:20.

2 And G2532 CONJ said G2036 V-2AAI-3S unto his G3588 T-DPM servants G3816 N-DPM , This G3778 D-NSM is G2076 V-PXI-3S John G2491 N-NSM the G3588 T-NSM Baptist G910 N-NSM ; he G846 P-GSM is risen G1453 V-API-3S from G575 PREP the G3588 T-GPM dead G3498 A-GPM ; and G2532 CONJ therefore G1223 PREP mighty works G1411 N-NPF do show forth G1754 V-PAI-3P themselves in G1722 PREP him G846 P-NSM .
3 For G1063 CONJ Herod G2264 N-NSM had laid hold on G2902 V-AAP-NSM John G2491 N-ASM , and bound G1210 V-AAI-3S him G846 P-ASM , and G2532 CONJ put G5087 V-2AMI-3S him in G1722 PREP prison G5438 N-DSF for Herodias\' sake G1223 PREP , his G3588 T-GSM brother G80 N-GSM Philip G5376 N-GSM \'s wife G1135 N-ASF .
4 For G3588 T-NSM John G2491 N-NSM said G3004 V-IAI-3S unto him G846 P-DSM , It is not lawful G1832 V-PQI-3S for thee G4671 P-2DS to have G2192 V-PAN her G846 P-ASF .
5 And G2532 CONJ when he would G2309 V-PAP-NSM have put him to death G615 V-AAN , he feared G5399 V-AOI-3S the G3588 T-ASM multitude G3793 N-ASM , because G3754 CONJ they counted G2192 V-IAI-3P him G846 P-ASM as G5613 ADV a prophet G4396 N-ASM .
6 But G1161 CONJ when Herod G2264 N-GSM \'s birthday G1077 N-GPN was kept G71 V-PPP-GPM , the G3588 T-NSF daughter G2364 N-NSF of Herodias G2266 N-GSF danced G3738 V-ADI-3S before them G1722 PREP , and G2532 CONJ pleased G700 V-AAI-3S Herod G2264 N-DSM .
7 Whereupon G3606 ADV he promised G3670 V-AAI-3S with G3326 PREP an oath G3727 N-GSM to give G1325 V-2AAN her G846 P-DSF whatsoever G3739 R-ASN she would ask G154 V-AMS-3S .
8 And G1161 CONJ she G3588 T-NSF , being before instructed G4264 V-APP-NSF of G5259 PREP her G3588 T-GSF mother G3384 N-GSF , said G5346 V-PXI-3S , Give G1325 V-2AAM-2S me G3427 P-1DS here G5602 ADV John G2491 N-GSM Baptist G910 N-GSM \'s head G2776 N-ASF in G1909 PREP a charger G4094 N-DSF .
9 And G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-NSM king G935 N-NSM was sorry G3076 V-API-3S : nevertheless G1161 CONJ for the oath\'s sake G1223 PREP , and G2532 CONJ them which sat with him at meat G4873 V-PNP-APM , he commanded G2753 V-AAI-3S it to be given G1325 V-APN her .
10 And G2532 CONJ he sent G3992 V-AAP-NSM , and beheaded G607 V-AAI-3S John G2491 N-ASM in G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DSF prison G5438 N-DSF .
11 And G2532 CONJ his G3588 T-NSF head G2776 N-NSF was brought G5342 V-API-3S in G1909 PREP a charger G4094 N-DSF , and G2532 CONJ given G1325 V-API-3S to the G3588 T-DSN damsel G2877 N-DSN : and G2532 CONJ she brought G5342 V-AAI-3S it to her G3588 T-DSF mother G3384 N-DSF .
12 And G2532 CONJ his G3588 T-NPM disciples G3101 N-NPM came G4334 V-2AAP-NPM , and took up G142 V-AAI-3P the G3588 T-ASN body G4983 N-ASN , and G2532 CONJ buried G2290 V-AAI-3P it G846 P-ASN , and G2532 CONJ went G2064 V-2AAP-NPM and told G518 V-AAI-3P Jesus G2424 N-DSM .
13 When G2532 CONJ Jesus G2424 N-NSM heard G191 V-AAP-NSM of it , he departed G402 V-AAI-3S thence G1564 ADV by G1722 PREP ship G4143 N-DSN into G1519 PREP a desert G2048 A-ASM place G5117 N-ASM apart G2596 PREP : and G2532 CONJ when the G3588 T-NPM people G3793 N-NPM had heard G191 V-AAP-NPM thereof , they followed G190 V-AAI-3P him G846 P-DSM on foot G3979 ADV out of G575 PREP the G3588 T-GPF cities G4172 N-GPF .
14 And G2532 CONJ Jesus G2424 N-NSM went forth G1831 V-2AAP-NSM , and saw G1492 V-2AAI-3S a great G4183 A-ASM multitude G3793 N-ASM , and G2532 CONJ was moved with compassion G4697 V-AOI-3S toward G1909 PREP them G846 P-DPM , and G2532 CONJ he healed G2323 V-AAI-3S their G3588 T-APM sick G732 A-APM .
15 And G1161 CONJ when it was G1096 V-2ADP-GSF evening G3798 A-GSF , his G3588 T-NPM disciples G3101 N-NPM came G4334 V-AAI-3P to him G846 P-GSM , saying G3004 V-PAP-NPM , This is G2076 V-PXI-3S a desert G2048 A-NSM place G5117 N-NSM , and G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-NSF time G5610 N-NSF is now G2235 ADV past G3928 V-2AAI-3S ; send the multitude away G630 V-AAM-2S , that G2443 CONJ they may go G565 V-2AAP-NPM into G1519 PREP the G3588 T-APF villages G2968 N-APF , and G2532 CONJ buy G59 V-AAS-3P themselves G1438 F-3DPM victuals G1033 N-APN .
16 But G1161 CONJ Jesus G2424 N-NSM said G2036 V-2AAI-3S unto them G846 P-DPM , They need G2192 V-PAI-3P not G3756 PRT-N depart G565 V-2AAN ; give G1325 V-2AAM-2P ye G5210 P-2NP them G846 P-DPM to eat G5315 V-2AAN .
17 And G1161 CONJ they G3588 T-NPM say G3004 V-PAI-3P unto him G846 P-DSM , We have V-PAI-1P here G5602 ADV but G1508 five G4002 A-NUI loaves G740 N-APM , and G2532 CONJ two G1417 A-NUI fishes G2486 N-APM .
18 He G3588 T-NSM said G2036 V-2AAI-3S , Bring G5342 V-PAM-2P them G846 P-APM hither G5602 ADV to me G3427 P-1DS .
19 And G2532 CONJ he commanded G2753 V-AAP-NSM the G3588 T-APM multitude G3793 N-APM to sit down G347 V-APN on G1909 PREP the G3588 T-APM grass G5528 N-APM , and G2532 CONJ took G2983 V-2AAP-NSM the G3588 T-APM five G4002 A-NUI loaves G740 N-APM , and G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-APM two G1417 A-NUI fishes G2486 N-APM , and looking up G308 V-AAP-NSM to G1519 PREP heaven G3772 N-ASM , he blessed G2127 V-AAI-3S , and G2532 CONJ broke G2806 V-AAP-NSM , and G2532 CONJ gave G1325 V-AAI-3S the G3588 T-APM loaves G740 N-APM to his G3588 T-NPM disciples G3101 N-DPM , and G1161 CONJ the G3588 T-DPM disciples G3101 N-NPM to the G3588 T-DPM multitude G3793 N-DPM .
20 And G2532 CONJ they did all G3956 A-NPM eat G5315 V-2AAI-3P , and G2532 CONJ were filled G5526 V-API-3P : and G2532 CONJ they took up G142 V-AAI-3P of G3588 T-GPN the G3588 T-GPN fragments G2801 N-GPN that remained G4052 V-PAP-ASN twelve G1427 A-NUI baskets G2894 N-APM full G4134 A-APM .
21 And G1161 CONJ they that had eaten G2068 V-PAP-NPM were G2258 V-IXI-3P about G5616 ADV five thousand G4000 A-NPM men G435 N-NPM , beside G5565 ADV women G1135 N-GPF and G2532 CONJ children G3813 N-GPN .
22 And G2532 CONJ straightway G2112 ADV Jesus G2424 N-NSM constrained G315 V-AAI-3S his G3588 T-APM disciples G3101 N-APM to get G1684 V-2AAN into G1519 PREP a ship G4143 N-ASN , and G2532 CONJ to gobefore G4254 V-PAN him G846 P-ASM unto G1519 PREP the G3588 T-ASN other side G4008 ADV , while G2193 CONJ he sent the multitudes away G630 V-AAS-3S .
23 And G2532 CONJ when he had sent the multitudes away G630 V-AAP-NSM , he went up G305 V-2AAI-3S into G1519 PREP a mountain G3735 N-ASN apart G2596 PREP to pray G4336 V-ADN : and G1161 CONJ when the evening G3798 A-GSF was come G1096 V-2ADP-GSF , he was G2258 V-IXI-3S there G1563 ADV alone G3441 A-NSM .
24 But G1161 CONJ the G3588 T-NSN ship G4143 N-NSN was G2258 V-IXI-3S now G2235 ADV in the midst G3319 A-ASN of G3588 T-GSF the G3588 T-GSF sea G2281 N-GSF , tossed G928 V-PPP-NSN with G5259 PREP waves G2949 N-GPN : for G1063 CONJ the G3588 T-NSM wind G417 N-NSM was G2258 V-IXI-3S contrary G1727 A-NSM .
25 And G1161 CONJ in the fourth G5067 A-DSF watch G5438 N-DSF of G3588 T-GSF the G3588 T-GSF night G3571 N-GSF Jesus G2424 N-NSM went G565 V-2AAI-3S unto G4314 PREP them G846 P-APM , walking G4043 V-PAP-NSM on G1909 PREP the G3588 T-GSF sea G2281 N-GSF .
26 And G2532 CONJ when the G3588 T-NPM disciples G3101 N-NPM saw G1492 V-2AAP-NPM him G846 P-ASM walking G4043 V-PAP-ASM on G1909 PREP the G3588 T-ASF sea G2281 N-ASF , they were troubled G5015 V-API-3P , saying G3004 V-PAP-NPM , It is G2076 V-PXI-3S a spirit G5326 N-NSN ; and G2532 CONJ they cried out G2896 V-AAI-3P for G3588 T-GSM fear G5401 N-GSM .
27 But G1161 CONJ straightway G2112 ADV Jesus G2424 N-NSM spake G2980 V-AAI-3S unto them G846 P-DPM , saying G3004 V-PAP-NSM , Be of good cheer G2293 V-PAM-2P ; it is G1510 V-PXI-1S I G1473 P-1NS ; be not afraid G5399 V-PNM-2P .
28 And G1161 CONJ Peter G4074 N-NSM answered G611 V-AOP-NSM him G846 P-DSM and said G2036 V-2AAI-3S , Lord G2962 N-VSM , if G1487 COND it be G1488 V-PXI-2S thou G4771 P-2NS , bid G2753 V-AAM-2S me G3165 P-1AS come G2064 V-2AAN unto G4314 PREP thee G4571 P-2AS on G1909 PREP the G3588 T-APN water G5204 N-APN .
29 And G1161 CONJ he G3588 T-NSM said G2036 V-2AAI-3S , Come . And G2532 CONJ when Peter G4074 N-NSM was come down G2597 V-2AAP-NSM out of G575 PREP the G3588 T-GSN ship G4143 N-GSN , he walked G4043 V-AAI-3S on G1909 PREP the G3588 T-APN water G5204 N-APN , to go G2064 V-2AAM-2S to G4314 PREP Jesus G2424 N-ASM .
30 But G1161 CONJ when he saw G991 V-PAP-NSM the G3588 T-ASM wind G417 N-ASM boisterous G2478 A-ASM , he was afraid G5399 V-AOI-3S ; and G2532 CONJ beginning G756 V-AMP-NSM to sink G2670 V-PPN , he cried G2896 V-AAI-3S , saying G3004 V-PAP-NSM , Lord G2962 N-VSM , save G4982 V-AAM-2S me G3165 P-1AS .
31 And G1161 CONJ immediately G2112 ADV Jesus G2424 N-NSM stretched forth G1614 V-AAP-NSF his hand G5495 N-ASF , and caught G1949 V-2ADI-3S him G846 P-GSM , and G2532 CONJ said G3004 V-PAI-3S unto him G846 P-DSM , O thou of little faith G3640 A-VSM , wherefore G1519 PREP didst thou doubt G1365 V-AAI-2S ?
32 And G2532 CONJ when they G846 P-GPM were come G1684 V-2AAP-GPM into G1519 PREP the G3588 T-ASN ship G4143 N-ASN , the G3588 T-NSM wind G417 N-NSM ceased G2869 V-AAI-3S .
33 Then G1161 CONJ they G3588 T-NPM that were in G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DSN ship G4143 N-DSN came G2064 V-2AAP-NPM and worshiped G4352 V-AAI-3P him G846 P-DSM , saying G3004 V-PAP-NPM , Of a truth G230 ADV thou art G1488 V-PXI-2S the Son G5207 N-NSM of God G2316 N-GSM .
34 And G2532 CONJ when they were gone over G1276 V-AAP-NPM , they came G2064 V-2AAI-3P into G1519 PREP the G3588 T-ASF land G1093 N-ASF of Gennesaret G1082 N-PRI .
35 And G2532 CONJ when the G3588 T-NPM men G435 N-NPM of G3588 T-GSM that G3588 T-GSM place G5117 N-GSM had knowledge G1921 V-2AAP-NPM of him G846 P-ASM , they sent out G649 V-AAI-3P into G1519 PREP all G3650 A-ASF that G3588 T-ASF country round about G4066 A-ASF , and G2532 CONJ brought G4374 V-AAI-3P unto him G846 P-DSM all G3956 A-APM that were diseased G2560 ADV ;
36 And G2532 CONJ besought G3870 V-IAI-3P him G846 P-ASM that G2443 CONJ they might only G3440 ADV touch G680 V-AMS-3P the G3588 T-GSN hem G2899 N-GSN of G3588 T-GSN his G3588 T-GSN garment G2440 N-GSN : and G2532 CONJ as many as G3745 K-NPM touched G680 V-ADI-3P were made perfectly whole G1295 V-API-3P .
