Proverbs 1:1 (AMP) Amplified Bibles

1 THE PROVERBS (truths obscurely expressed, maxims, and parables) of Solomon son of David, king of Israel:
2 That people may know skillful and godly Wisdom and instruction, discern and comprehend the words of understanding and insight,
3 Receive instruction in wise dealing and the discipline of wise thoughtfulness, righteousness, justice, and integrity,
4 That prudence may be given to the simple, and knowledge, discretion, and discernment to the youth--
5 The wise also will hear and increase in learning, and the person of understanding will acquire skill and attain to sound counsel so that he may be able to steer his course rightly--Prov. 9:9.
6 That people may understand a proverb and a figure of speech or an enigma with its interpretation, and the words of the wise and their dark sayings or riddles.
7 The reverent and worshipful fear of the Lord is the beginning and the principal and choice part of knowledge its starting point and its essence; but fools despise skillful and godly Wisdom, instruction, and discipline. Ps. 111:10.
8 My son, hear the instruction of your father; reject not nor forsake the teaching of your mother.
9 For they are a victor's chaplet (garland) of grace upon your head and chains and pendants of gold worn by kings for your neck.
10 My son, if sinners entice you, do not consent. Ps. 1:1; Eph. 5:11.
11 If they say, Come with us; let us lie in wait to shed blood, let us ambush the innocent without cause and show that his piety is in vain;
12 Let us swallow them up alive as does Sheol (the place of the dead), and whole, as those who go down into the pit of the dead;
13 We shall find and take all kinds of precious goods when our victims are put out of the way, we shall fill our houses with plunder;
14 Throw in your lot with us they insist and be a sworn brother and comrade; let us all have one purse in common--
15 My son, do not walk in the way with them; restrain your foot from their path;
16 For their feet run to evil, and they make haste to shed blood.
17 For in vain is the net spread in the sight of any bird!
18 But when these men set a trap for others they are lying in wait for their own blood; they set an ambush for their own lives.
19 So are the ways of everyone who is greedy of gain; such greed for plunder takes away the lives of its possessors. Prov. 15:27; I Tim. 6:10.
20 Wisdom cries aloud in the street, she raises her voice in the markets;
21 She cries at the head of the noisy intersections in the chief gathering places; at the entrance of the city gates she speaks:
22 How long, O simple ones open to evil, will you love being simple? And the scoffers delight in scoffing and self-confident fools hate knowledge?
23 If you will turn (repent) and give heed to my reproof, behold, I Wisdom will pour out my spirit upon you, I will make my words known to you. Isa. 11:2; Eph. 1:17-20.
24 Because I have called and you have refused to answer, have stretched out my hand and no man has heeded it, Isa. 65:11, 12; 66:4; Jer. 7:13, 14; Zech. 7:11-13.
25 And you treated as nothing all my counsel and would accept none of my reproof,
26 I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when the thing comes that shall cause you terror and panic--
27 When your panic comes as a storm and desolation and your calamity comes on as a whirlwind, when distress and anguish come upon you.
28 Then will they call upon me Wisdom but I will not answer; they will seek me early and diligently but they will not find me. Job 27:9; 35:12, 13; Isa. 1:15, 16; Jer. 11:11; Mic. 3:4; James 4:3.
29 Because they hated knowledge and did not choose the reverent and worshipful fear of the Lord, Prov. 8:13.
30 Would accept none of my counsel, and despised all my reproof,
31 Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way and be satiated with their own devices.
32 For the backsliding of the simple shall slay them, and the careless ease of self-confident fools shall destroy them. Isa. 32:6.
33 But whoso hearkens to me Wisdom shall dwell securely and in confident trust and shall be quiet, without fear or dread of evil.

5 A wise H2450 AMS man will hear H8085 VQY3MS , and will increase H3254 W-VHI3MS learning H3948 NMS ; and a man of understanding H995 W-VNPMS shall attain H7069 VQY3MS unto wise counsels H8458 NFP :
6 To understand H995 L-VHFC a proverb H4912 NMS , and the interpretation H4426 W-NFS ; the words H1697 CMP of the wise H2450 AMP , and their dark sayings H2420 W-CFS-3MP .
7 The fear H3374 CFS of the LORD H3068 EDS is the beginning H7225 CFS of knowledge H1847 NFS : but fools H191 NMP despise H936 VQQ3MP wisdom H2451 NFS and instruction H4148 W-NMS .
8 My son H1121 NMS-1MS , hear H8085 VQI2MS the instruction H4148 CMS of thy father H1 NMS , and forsake H5203 VQY2MS not H408 W-NPAR the law H8451 CFS of thy mother H517 CFS-2MS :
9 For H3588 CONJ they H1992 PPRO-3MP shall be an ornament H3880 CFS of grace H2580 NMS unto thy head H7218 L-CMS-2MS , and chains H6060 W-NMP about thy neck H1621 L-CFP-2MS .
10 My son H1121 NMS-1MS , if H518 PART sinners H2400 AMP entice H6601 VPY3MP-2MS thee , consent H14 thou not H408 NPAR .
11 If H518 PART they say H559 VQY3MP , Come H1980 VQI2MS-3FS with H854 PREP-1MP us , let us lay wait H693 VQI1MP for blood H1818 L-NMS , let us lurk privily H6845 VQY1MP for the innocent H5355 L-AMS without cause H2600 ADV :
12 Let us swallow them up H1104 VQI1MP-3MP alive H2416 NMP as the grave H7585 K-NMS ; and whole H8549 W-AMP , as those that go down H3381 K-VQCMP into the pit H953 NMS :

15 My son H1121 NMS-1MS , walk H1980 VQY2MS not H408 NPAR thou in the way H1870 B-NMS with H854 PREP-3MP them ; refrain H4513 VQI2MS thy foot H7272 CFS-2MS from their path H5410 M-CFS-3MP :
16 For H3588 CONJ their feet H7272 CFD-3MP run H7323 VQY3MP to evil H7451 LD-AMS , and make haste H4116 W-VPY3MP to shed H8210 L-VQFC blood H1818 NMS .
17 Surely H3588 CONJ in vain H2600 ADV the net H7568 D-NFS is spread H2219 VUPFS in the sight H5869 B-CMP of any H3605 CMS bird H1167 CMS .
18 And they H1992 W-PPRO-3MP lay wait H693 VQY3MP for their own blood H1818 L-CMS-3MP ; they lurk privily H6845 VQY3MP for their own lives H5315 L-CFP-3MP .
19 So H3651 ADV are the ways H734 CFP of every one H3605 NMS that is greedy H1214 NMS of gain H1215 NMS ; which taketh away H3947 VQY3MS the life H5315 GFS of the owners H1167 CMP-3MS thereof .
20 Wisdom H2454 NFP crieth H7442 VQY3FP without H2351 BD-NMS ; she uttereth H5414 VQY2MS her voice H6963 CMS-3FS in the streets H7339 BD-NFP :
21 She crieth H7121 VQI2MS in the chief H7218 B-NMS place of concourse H1993 VQPFP , in the openings H6607 B-CMP of the gates H8179 NMP : in the city H5892 BD-NFS she uttereth H559 VQY3FS her words H561 CMP-3FS , saying ,
22 How long H5704 PREP , ye simple ones H6612 NMP , will ye love H157 VQY2MP simplicity H6612 NMS ? and the scorners H3887 W-VQPMP delight H2530 VQQ3MP in their scorning H3944 NMS , and fools H3684 W-NMP hate H8130 VQY3MP knowledge H1847 NFS ?
23 Turn H7725 VQY2MP you at my reproof H8433 L-CFS-1MS : behold H2009 IJEC , I will pour out H5042 VHI1MS my spirit H7307 CFS-1MS unto you , I will make known H3045 VHI1MS my words H1697 CMP-1MS unto you .
24 Because H3282 ADV I have called H7121 VQQ1CS , and ye refused H3985 W-VPY2MP ; I have stretched out H5186 VQQ1MS my hand H3027 CFS-1MS , and no man H369 W-NPAR regarded H7181 VHPMS ;
25 But ye have set at naught H6544 W-VQY2MP all H3605 CMS my counsel H6098 CFS-1MS , and would H14 VQQ2MP none H3808 NADV of my reproof H8433 W-CFS-1MS :
26 I H589 PPRO-1MS also H1571 CONJ will laugh H7832 VQY1MS at your calamity H343 B-CMS-2MP ; I will mock H3932 VQY1MS when your fear H6343 CMS-2MP cometh H935 B-VQFC ;
27 When your fear H6343 CMS-2MP cometh H935 B-VQFC as desolation H7722 , and your destruction H343 W-CMS-3MP cometh H857 VQY3MS as a whirlwind H5492 K-VQFC ; when distress H6869 NFS and anguish H6695 W-NFS cometh H935 B-VQFC upon H5921 PREP-2MP you .
28 Then H227 ADV shall they call upon H7121 VQY3MP-3FP-1MS me , but I will not H3808 W-NPAR answer H6030 VQY1MS ; they shall seek me early H7836 VPY3MP-3FP-1MS , but they shall not H3808 W-NPAR find H4672 VQY3MP-3FP-1MS me :
29 For that NMS they hated H8130 VQQ3MP knowledge H1847 NFS , and did not H3808 NADV choose H977 VQQ3MP the fear H3374 W-CFS of the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS :
30 They would H14 VQQ3MP none H3808 NADV of my counsel H6098 L-CFS-1MS : they despised H5006 VQQ3MP all H3605 NMS my reproof H8433 CFS-1MS .
31 Therefore shall they eat H398 W-VQY3MP of the fruit H6529 M-CMS of their own way H1870 CMS-3MP , and be filled H7646 VQY3MP with their own devices H4156 WM-CFP-3MP .
32 For H3588 CONJ the turning away H4878 CFS of the simple H6612 NMP shall slay H2026 VQY3FS-3MP them , and the prosperity H7962 W-CFS of fools H3684 NMP shall destroy H6 VPY3FS-3MP them .
33 But whoso hearkeneth H8085 W-VQPMS unto me shall dwell H7931 VQY3MS safely H983 NMS , and shall be quiet H7599 W-VPQ3MS from fear H6343 M-CMS of evil H7451 AFS .
