2 Kings 18:1 (AMP) Amplified Bibles

1 IN THE third year of Hoshea son of Elah king of Israel, Hezekiah son of Ahaz king of Judah began to reign.
2 He was twenty-five years old when he began his twenty-nine-year reign in Jerusalem. His mother was Abi daughter of Zechariah.
3 Hezekiah did right in the sight of the Lord, according to all that David his forefather had done.
4 He removed the high places, broke the images, cut down the Asherim, and broke in pieces the bronze serpent that Moses had made, for until then the Israelites had burned incense to it; but he called it Nehushtan a bronze trifle.
5 Hezekiah trusted in, leaned on, and was confident in the Lord, the God of Israel; so that neither after him nor before him was any one of all the kings of Judah like him.
6 For he clung and held fast to the Lord and ceased not to follow Him, but kept His commandments, as the Lord commanded Moses.
7 And the Lord was with Hezekiah; he prospered wherever he went. And he rebelled against the king of Assyria and refused to serve him.
8 He smote the Philistines, even to Gaza the most distant city and its borders, from the isolated watchtower to the populous fortified city.
9 In the fourth year of King Hezekiah, which was the seventh of Hoshea son of Elah king of Israel, Shalmaneser king of Assyria came up against Samaria and besieged it.
10 After three years it was taken; in the sixth year of Hezekiah, which was the ninth year of Hoshea king of Israel, Samaria was taken.
11 The king of Assyria carried Israel away to Assyria, and put them in Halah, and on the Habor, the river of Gozan, and in the cities of the Medes,
12 Because they did not obey the voice of the Lord their God, but transgressed His covenant, even all that Moses the servant of the Lord commanded, and would not hear it or do it.
13 In the fourteenth year of Hezekiah, Sennacherib king of Assyria came up against all the fortified cities of Judah and took them.
14 Then Hezekiah king of Judah sent to the king of Assyria at Lachish, saying, I have done wrong. Depart from me; what you put on me I will bear. And the king of Assyria exacted of Hezekiah king of Judah 300 talents of silver and thirty talents of gold.
15 And Hezekiah gave him all the silver that was found in the house of the Lord and in the treasuries of the king's house.
16 Then Hezekiah stripped off the gold from the doors of the temple of the Lord and from the doorposts which he as king of Judah had overlaid, and gave it to the king of Assyria.
17 And the king of Assyria sent the Tartan, the Rabsaris, and the Rabshakeh the high officials from Lachish to King Hezekiah at Jerusalem with a great army. They went up to Jerusalem, and when they arrived, they came and stood by the canal of the Upper Pool, which is on the highway to the Fuller's Field. II Chron. 32:9-19; Isa. 36:1-22.
18 When they called for the king, there came out to them Eliakim son of Hilkiah, who was over the king's household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah son of Asaph the recorder.
19 The Rabshakeh told them, Say to Hezekiah, Thus says the great king of Assyria: What justifies this confidence of yours?
20 You say--but they are empty words--There is counsel and strength for war. Now on whom do you rely, that you rebel against me?
21 Behold, you are relying on Egypt, that broken reed of a staff; if a man leans on it, it will pierce his hand. So is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all who trust and rely on him.
22 But if you tell me, We trust in and rely on the Lord our God, is it not He Whose high places and altars Hezekiah has removed, saying to Judah and Jerusalem, You shall worship before this altar in Jerusalem?
23 So now, make a wager and give pledges to my lord the king of Assyria: I will deliver you 2,000 horses--if you can on your part put riders on them.
24 How then can you beat back one captain among the least of my master's servants, when your trust is put in Egypt for chariots and horsemen?
25 Have I come up without the Lord against this place to destroy it? The Lord said to me, Go up against this land and destroy it.
26 Then Eliakim son of Hilkiah and Shebna and Joah said to the Rabshakeh, We pray you, speak to your servants in the Aramaic (Syrian) language, for we understand it; and do not speak to us in the Jews' language in the hearing of the people on the wall.
27 But the Rabshakeh said to them, Has my master sent me to your master and you only to say these things? Has he not sent me to the men who sit on the wall whom Hezekiah has doomed to be forced to eat their own dung and drink their own urine along with you?
28 Then the Rabshakeh stood and cried with a loud voice in the Jews' language, Hear the word of the great king of Assyria!
29 Thus says the king: Let not Hezekiah deceive you. For he will not be able to deliver you out of my hand.
30 Nor let Hezekiah make you trust in and rely on the Lord, saying, The Lord will surely deliver us, and this city will not be given into the hand of Assyria's king.
31 Hearken not to Hezekiah, for thus says the king of Assyria: Make your peace with me and come out to me, and eat every man from his own vine and fig tree and drink every man the waters of his own cistern,
32 Until I come and take you away to a land like your own, a land of grain and vintage fruit, of bread and vineyards, of olive trees and honey, that you may live and not die. Do not listen to Hezekiah when he urges you, saying, The Lord will deliver us.
33 Has any one of the gods of the nations ever delivered his land out of the hand of the king of Assyria?
34 Where are the gods of Hamath and Arpad in Syria? Where are the gods of Sepharvaim, Hena, and Ivvah in the Euphrates Valley? Have they delivered Samaria Israel's capital out of my hand?
35 Who of all the gods of the countries has delivered his country out of my hand, that the Lord should deliver Jerusalem out of my hand?
36 But the people were silent and answered him not a word, for Hezekiah had commanded, Do not answer him.
37 Then Eliakim son of Hilkiah, who was over the royal household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah son of Asaph the recorder came to Hezekiah with their clothes rent, and told him what the Rabshakeh had said.

2 Twenty H6242 and five H2568 years H8141 NFS old H1121 was H1961 VQQ3MS he when he began to reign H4427 ; and he reigned H4427 twenty H6242 W-MMP and nine H8672 years H8141 NFS in Jerusalem H3389 . His mother H517 GFS-3MS \'s name H8034 W-CMS also was Abi H21 , the daughter H1323 CFS of Zachariah H2148 .
3 And he did H6213 W-VQY3MS that which was right H3477 in the sight H5869 B-CMP of the LORD H3068 EDS , according to all H3605 K-NMS that H834 RPRO David H1732 MMS his father H1 did H6213 W-VQY3MS .
4 He H1931 PPRO-3MS removed H5493 VHQ3MS the high places H1116 , and broke H7665 the images H4676 , and cut down H3772 the groves H842 , and broke in pieces H3807 the brazen H5178 serpent H5175 that H834 RPRO Moses H4872 had made H6213 VQQ3MS : for H3588 CONJ unto H5704 PREP those H1992 days H3117 D-NMP the children H1121 of Israel H3478 did H1961 VQQ3MP burn incense H6999 to it : and he called H7121 W-VQY3MS it Nehushtan H5180 .
5 He trusted H982 in the LORD H3068 God H430 of Israel H3478 ; so that after H310 W-PREP-3MS him was H1961 VQQ3MS none H3808 NADV like him H3644 PREP-3MS among all H3605 the kings H4428 CMP of Judah H3063 , nor any that H834 W-RPRO were H1961 VQQ3MP before H6440 him .
6 For he cleaved H1692 to the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS , and departed H5493 not H3808 NADV from following H310 him , but kept H8104 his commandments H4687 , which H834 RPRO the LORD H3068 EDS commanded H6680 VPQ3MS Moses H4872 .
7 And the LORD H3068 EDS was H1961 W-VQQ3MS with H5973 PREP-3MS him ; and he prospered H7919 whithersoever H3605 he went forth H3318 VQY3MS : and he rebelled H4775 against the king H4428 of Assyria H804 GFS , and served H5647 him not H3808 W-NPAR .
8 He H1931 PPRO-3MS smote H5221 the Philistines H6430 TMS , even unto H5704 PREP Gaza H5804 LFS , and the borders H1366 thereof , from the tower H4026 of the watchmen H5341 to H5704 PREP the fenced H4013 city H5892 GFS .
9 And it came to pass H1961 W-VPY3MS in the fourth H7243 year H8141 of king H4428 NMS Hezekiah H2396 , which H1931 PPRO-3FS was the seventh H7637 year H8141 of Hoshea H1954 son H1121 of Elah H425 king H4428 NMS of Israel H3478 , that Shalmaneser H8022 king H4428 NMS of Assyria H804 GFS came up H5927 against H5921 PREP Samaria H8111 , and besieged H6696 it .
10 And at the end H7097 M-CMS of three H7969 MFS years H8141 B-CFS they took H3920 it : even in the sixth H8337 RFS year H8141 B-CFS of Hezekiah H2396 , that H1931 PPRO-3FS is the ninth H8672 MFS year H8141 B-CFS of Hoshea H1954 king H4428 NMS of Israel H3478 , Samaria H8111 was taken H3920 .
11 And the king H4428 NMS of Assyria H804 GFS did carry away H1540 Israel H3478 unto Assyria H804 , and put H5148 them in Halah H2477 and in Habor H2249 by the river H5104 of Gozan H1470 , and in the cities H5892 of the Medes H4074 :
12 Because H5921 PREP they obeyed H8085 VQQ3MP not H3808 ADV the voice H6963 B-NMS of the LORD H3068 EDS their God H430 , but transgressed H5674 his covenant H1285 , and all H3605 NMS that H834 RPRO Moses H4872 the servant H5650 NMS of the LORD H3068 EDS commanded H6680 VPQ3MS , and would not H3808 W-NADV hear H8085 VQQ3MP them , nor H3808 W-NADV do H6213 them .
13 Now in the fourteenth H702 W-MFS year H8141 NFS of king H4428 NMS Hezekiah H2396 did Sennacherib H5576 king H4428 NMS of Assyria H804 GFS come up H5927 against H5921 PREP all H3605 NMS the fenced H1219 cities H5892 of Judah H3063 , and took H8610 them .
14 And Hezekiah H2396 king H4428 NMS of Judah H3063 sent H7971 W-VQY3MS to H413 PREP the king H4428 NMS of Assyria H804 GFS to Lachish H3923 , saying H559 L-VQFC , I have offended H2398 VQQ1MS ; return H7725 VQFC from PREP me : that which H834 RPRO thou puttest H5414 VQY2MS on H5921 PREP me will I bear H5375 VQY1MS . And the king H4428 NMS of Assyria H804 GFS appointed H7760 W-VQY3MS unto H5921 PREP Hezekiah H2396 king H4428 NMS of Judah H3063 three H7969 BFS hundred H3967 BFP talents H3603 CFS of silver H3701 NMS and thirty H7970 W-MMP talents H3603 CFS of gold H2091 .
15 And Hezekiah H2396 gave H5414 W-VQQ3MS him all H3605 NMS the silver H3701 that was found H4672 in the house H1004 CMS of the LORD H3068 EDS , and in the treasures H214 of the king H4428 \'s house H1004 CMS .
16 At that H1931 time H6256 did Hezekiah H2396 cut off H7112 the gold from the doors H1817 of the temple H1964 CMS of the LORD H3068 EDS , and from the pillars H547 which H834 RPRO Hezekiah H2396 king H4428 NMS of Judah H3063 had overlaid H6823 , and gave H5414 it to the king H4428 NMS of Assyria H804 .
17 And the king H4428 NMS of Assyria H804 GFS sent H7971 W-VQY3MS Tartan H8661 and Rabsaris H7249 and Rab H7262 - shakeh from H4480 PREP Lachish H3923 to H413 PREP king H4428 NMS Hezekiah H2396 with a great H3515 VQS3MS host H2426 against Jerusalem H3389 . And they went up H5927 and came H935 W-VQY3MP to Jerusalem H3389 . And when they were come up H5927 , they came H935 W-VQY3MP and stood H5975 by the conduit H8585 of the upper H5945 pool H1295 , which H834 RPRO is in the highway H4546 of the fuller H3526 \'s field H7704 CMS .
18 And when they had called H7121 to H413 PREP the king H4428 D-NMS , there came out H3318 W-VQY3MS to H413 PREP them Eliakim H471 the son H1121 of Hilkiah H2518 , which H834 RPRO was over H5921 PREP the household H1004 , and Shebna H7644 the scribe H5608 , and Joah H3098 the son H1121 of Asaph H623 the recorder H2142 .
19 And Rab H7262 - shakeh said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP them , Speak H559 W-VQY3MS ye now H4994 IJEC to H413 PREP Hezekiah H2396 , Thus H3541 saith H559 W-VQY3MS the great H1419 D-AMS king H4428 NMS , the king H4428 NMS of Assyria H804 GFS , What H4100 IGAT confidence H986 is this H2088 D-PMS wherein H834 RPRO thou trustest H982 ?
20 Thou sayest H559 VQQ2MS , ( ADV but H389 ADV they are but vain H8193 NFD words H1697 CMS , ) I have counsel H6098 NFS and strength H1369 W-NFS for the war H4421 . Now H6258 ADV on H5921 PREP whom H4310 IPRO dost thou trust H982 , that H3588 CONJ thou rebellest H4775 against me ?
21 Now H6258 ADV , behold H2009 IJEC , thou trustest H982 upon H5921 PREP the staff H4938 of this H2088 D-PMS bruised H7533 reed H7070 , even upon H5921 PREP Egypt H4714 EFS , on H5921 PREP which H834 RPRO if a man H376 NMS lean H5564 , it will go H935 into his hand H3709 , and pierce H5344 it : so H3651 ADV is Pharaoh H6547 EMS king H4428 NMS of Egypt H4714 EFS unto all H3605 that trust H982 on H5921 PREP him .
22 But if H3588 W-CONJ ye say H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP me , We trust H982 in H413 PREP the LORD H3068 EDS our God H430 : is not H3808 D-NPAR that he H1931 PPRO-3MS , whose H834 RPRO high places H1116 and whose altars H4196 Hezekiah H2396 hath taken away H5493 VHQ3MS , and hath said H559 W-VQY3MS to Judah H3063 and Jerusalem H3389 , Ye shall worship H7812 before H6440 L-CMP this H2088 D-PMS altar H4196 D-NMS in Jerusalem H3389 ?
23 Now H6258 W-ADV therefore , I pray thee H4994 IJEC , give pledges H6149 to H854 PREP my lord H113 the king H4428 NMS of Assyria H804 GFS , and I will deliver H5414 thee two thousand H505 horses H5483 , if H518 PART thou be able H3201 VQI2MS on thy part to set H5414 riders H7392 upon H5921 PREP-3MP them .
24 How H349 W-IJEC then wilt thou turn away H7725 the face H6440 CMP of one H259 captain H6346 of the least H6996 of my master H113 \'s servants H5650 , and put thy trust H982 on H5921 PREP Egypt H4714 EFS for chariots H7393 and for horsemen H6571 ?
25 Am I now H6258 ADV come up H5927 without H1107 the LORD H3068 EDS against H5921 PREP this H2088 D-PMS place H4725 D-NMS to destroy H7843 it ? The LORD H3068 EDS said H559 VQQ3MS to H413 PREP-1MS me , Go up H5927 against H5921 PREP this H2063 D-DFS land H776 D-GFS , and destroy H7843 it .
26 Then said H559 W-VQY3MS Eliakim H471 the son H1121 of Hilkiah H2518 , and Shebna H7644 , and Joah H3098 , unto H413 PREP Rab H7262 - shakeh , Speak H1696 , I pray thee H4994 IJEC , to H413 PREP thy servants H5650 in the Syrian language H762 ; for H3588 CONJ we H587 understand H8085 it : and talk H1696 not H408 W-NPAR with H5973 PREP-1MP us in the Jews\' language H3066 in the ears H241 of the people H5971 that H834 RPRO are on H5921 PREP the wall H2346 .
27 But Rab H7262 - shakeh said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP-3MP them , Hath my master H113 sent H7971 me to H5921 PREP thy master H113 , and to H413 W-PREP-2MS thee , to speak H1696 these H428 D-DPRO-3MP words H1697 AMP ? hath he not H3808 I-NADV sent me to H5921 PREP the men H376 D-NMP which sit H3427 on H5921 PREP the wall H2346 , that they may eat H398 L-VQFC their own dung H6675 , and drink H8354 WL-VQFC their own piss H4325 with H5973 you ?
28 Then Rab H7262 - shakeh stood H5975 and cried H7121 W-VQY3MS with a loud H1419 AMS voice H6963 in the Jews\' language H3066 , and spoke H1696 W-VPY3MS , saying H559 W-VQY3MS , Hear H8085 VQI2MP the word H1697 CMS of the great H1419 AMS king H4428 NMS , the king H4428 NMS of Assyria H804 :
29 Thus H3541 saith H559 VQQ3MS the king H4428 D-NMS , Let not H408 NPAR Hezekiah H2396 deceive H5377 you : for H3588 CONJ he shall not H3808 NADV be able H3201 VQY3MS to deliver H5337 L-VHFC you out of his hand H3027 :
30 Neither H408 W-NPAR let Hezekiah H2396 make you trust H982 in H413 PREP the LORD H3068 EDS , saying H559 L-VQFC , The LORD H3068 EDS will surely deliver H5337 us , and this H2063 D-DFS city H5892 D-GFS shall not H3808 W-NPAR be delivered H5414 into the hand H3027 B-CFS of the king H4428 NMS of Assyria H804 .
31 Hearken H8085 not H408 ADV to H413 PREP Hezekiah H2396 : for H3588 CONJ thus H3541 saith H559 VQQ3MS the king H4428 NMS of Assyria H804 GFS , Make H6213 an agreement with H854 PREP-1MS me by a present H1293 , and come out H3318 to H413 PREP me , and then eat H398 ye every man H376 NMS of his own vine H1612 , and every one H376 NMS of his fig tree H8384 , and drink H8354 W-VQI2MP ye every one H376 NMS the waters H4325 of his cistern H953 :
32 Until H5704 PREP I come H935 and take you away H3947 to H413 PREP a land H776 GFS like your own land H776 , a land H776 GFS of corn H1715 and wine H8492 , a land H776 GFS of bread H3899 NMS and vineyards H3754 , a land H776 GFS of oil H3323 olive H2132 and of honey H1706 , that ye may live H2421 W-VQI2MP , and not H3808 W-NPAR die H4191 : and hearken H8085 not H408 unto H413 PREP Hezekiah H2396 , when H3588 CONJ he persuadeth H5496 you , saying H559 L-VQFC , The LORD H3068 EDS will deliver H5337 us .
33 Hath any H376 NMS of the gods H430 CDP of the nations H1471 D-NMP delivered at all H5337 his land H776 out of the hand H3027 M-GFS of the king H4428 NMS of Assyria H804 ?
34 Where H346 IGAT are the gods H430 CDP of Hamath H2574 , and of Arpad H774 ? where H346 IGAT are the gods H430 CDP of Sepharvaim H5617 , Hena H2012 , and Ivah H5755 ? have they delivered H5337 Samaria H8111 out of mine hand H3027 ?
35 Who H4310 IPRO are they among all H3605 B-CMS the gods H430 CDP of the countries H776 , that H834 RPRO have delivered H5337 their country H776 out of mine hand H3027 , that H3588 CONJ the LORD H3068 EDS should deliver H5337 Jerusalem H3389 out of mine hand H3027 ?
36 But the people H5971 held their peace H2790 , and answered H6030 VQQ3MP him not H3808 ADV a word H1697 VQPMS : for H3588 CONJ the king H4428 D-NMS \'s commandment H4687 CFS was , saying H559 L-VQFC , Answer H6030 him not H3808 NADV .
37 Then came H935 W-VQY3MS Eliakim H471 the son H1121 of Hilkiah H2518 , which H834 RPRO was over H5921 PREP the household H1004 D-NMS , and Shebna H7644 the scribe H5608 , and Joah H3098 the son H1121 of Asaph H623 the recorder H2142 , to H413 PREP Hezekiah H2396 with their clothes H899 rent H7167 , and told H5046 him the words H1697 CMP of Rab H7262 - shakeh .
