Genesis 42:1 (AMP) Amplified Bibles

1 NOW WHEN Jacob learned that there was grain in Egypt, he said to his sons, Why do you look at one another?
2 For, he said, I have heard that there is grain in Egypt; get down there and buy grain for us, that we may live and not die.
3 So ten of Joseph's brethren went to buy grain in Egypt.
4 But Benjamin, Joseph's full brother, Jacob did not send with his brothers; for he said, Lest perhaps some harm or injury should befall him.
5 So the sons of Israel came to buy grain among those who came, for there was hunger and general lack of food in the land of Canaan.
6 Now Joseph was the governor over the land, and he it was who sold to all the people of the land; and Joseph's half brothers came and bowed themselves down before him with their faces to the ground.
7 Joseph saw his brethren and he recognized them, but he treated them as if he were a stranger to them and spoke roughly to them. He said, Where do you come from? And they replied, From the land of Canaan to buy food.
8 Joseph knew his brethren, but they did not know him.
9 And Joseph remembered the dreams he had dreamed about them and said to them, You are spies and with unfriendly purpose you have come to observe secretly the nakedness of the land.
10 But they said to him, No, my lord, but your servants have come only to buy food.
11 We are all one man's sons; we are true men; your servants are not spies.
12 And he said to them, No, but you have come to see the nakedness of the land.
13 But they said, Your servants are twelve brothers, the sons of one man in the land of Canaan; the youngest is today with our father, and one is not.
14 And Joseph said to them, It is as I said to you, You are spies.
15 You shall be proved by this test: by the life of Pharaoh, you shall not go away from here unless your youngest brother comes here.
16 Send one of you and let him bring your brother, and you will be kept in prison, that your words may be proved whether there is any truth in you; or else by the life of Pharaoh you certainly are spies.
17 Then he put them all in custody for three days.
18 And Joseph said to them on the third day, Do this and live! I reverence and fear God.
19 If you are true men, let one of your brothers be bound in your prison, but the rest of you go and carry grain for those weakened with hunger in your households.
20 But bring your youngest brother to me, so your words will be verified and you shall live. And they did so.
21 And they said one to another, We are truly guilty about our brother, for we saw the distress and anguish of his soul when he begged us to let him go, and we would not hear. So this distress and difficulty has come upon us.
22 Reuben answered them, Did I not tell you, Do not sin against the boy, and you would not hear? Therefore, behold, his blood is required of us.
23 But they did not know that Joseph understood them, for he spoke to them through an interpreter.
24 And he turned away from them and wept; then he returned to them and talked with them, and took from them Simeon and bound him before their eyes.
25 Then privately Joseph commanded that their sacks be filled with grain, every man's money be restored to his sack, and provisions be given to them for the journey. And this was done for them.
26 They loaded their donkeys with grain and left.
27 And as one of them opened his sack to give his donkey fodder at the lodging place, he caught sight of his money; for behold, it was in his sack's mouth.
28 And he said to his brothers, My money is restored! Here it is in my sack! And their hearts failed them and they were afraid and turned trembling one to another, saying, What is this that God has done to us?
29 When they came to Jacob their father in Canaan, they told him all that had befallen them, saying,
30 The man who is the lord of the land spoke roughly to us and took us for spies of the country.
31 And we said to him, We are true men, not spies.
32 We are twelve brothers with the same father; one is no more, and the youngest is today with our father in the land of Canaan.
33 And the man, the lord of the country, said to us, By this test I will know whether or not you are honest men: leave one of your brothers here with me and take grain for your famishing households and be gone.
34 Bring your youngest brother to me; then I will know that you are not spies, but that you are honest men. And I will deliver to you your brother whom I have kept bound in prison, and you may do business in the land.
35 When they emptied their sacks, behold, every man's parcel of money was in his sack! When both they and their father saw the bundles of money, they were afraid.
36 And Jacob their father said to them, You have bereaved me! Joseph is not, and Simeon is not, and you would take Benjamin from me. All these things are against me!
37 And Reuben said to his father, Slay my two sons if I do not bring Benjamin back to you. Deliver him into my keeping, and I will bring him back to you.
38 But Jacob said, My son shall not go down with you, for his brother is dead and he alone is left of his mother's children; if harm or accident should befall him on the journey you are to take, you would bring my hoary head down to Sheol (the place of the dead) with grief.

2 And he said H559 W-VQY3MS , Behold H2009 IJEC , I have heard H8085 VQQ1MS that H3588 CONJ there is H3426 ADV corn H7668 in Egypt H4714 : get you down H3381 thither H8033 ADV-3FS , and buy H7666 for us from thence H8033 M-ADV ; that we may live H2421 , and not H3808 W-NPAR die H4191 .
3 And Joseph H3130 \'s ten H6235 brethren H251 went down H3381 to buy H7666 corn H1250 in Egypt H4714 .
4 But Benjamin H1144 , Joseph H3130 \'s brother H251 CMS , Jacob H3290 sent H7971 VQQ3MS not H3808 NADV with H854 PREP his brethren H251 NMP-3MS ; for H3588 CONJ he said H559 VQQ3MS , Lest peradventure H6435 CONJ mischief H611 befall H7122 him .
5 And the sons H1121 of Israel H3478 came H935 W-VQY3MP to buy H7666 corn among H8432 B-NMS those that came H935 : for H3588 CONJ the famine H7458 D-NMS was H1961 VQQ3MS in the land H776 B-GFS of Canaan H3667 LMS .
6 And Joseph H3130 was the governor H7989 over H5921 PREP the land H776 D-GFS , and he H1931 PPRO-3MS it was that sold H7666 to all H3605 L-CMS the people H5971 NMS of the land H776 D-GFS : and Joseph H3130 \'s brethren H251 came H935 W-VQY3MP , and bowed down themselves H7812 before him with their faces H639 NMD to the earth H776 NFS-3FS .
7 And Joseph H3130 saw H7200 W-VIY3MS his brethren H251 NMP-3MS , and he knew H5234 them , but made himself strange H5234 unto H413 PREP-3MP them , and spoke H1696 W-VPY3MS roughly H7186 unto H854 PREP-3MP them ; and he said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP-3MS them , Whence H370 M-ADV come H935 ye ? And they said H559 W-VQY3MS , From the land H776 M-NFS of Canaan H3667 LMS to buy H7666 food H400 NMS .
8 And Joseph H3130 knew H5234 his brethren H251 NMP-3MS , but they H1992 W-PPRO-3MP knew H5234 not H3808 NADV him .
9 And Joseph H3130 remembered H2142 W-VQY3MS the dreams H2472 which H834 RPRO he dreamed H2492 of them , and said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP-3MS them , Ye H859 PPRO-2MS are spies H7270 ; to see H7200 L-VQFC the nakedness H6172 CFS of the land H776 D-GFS ye are come H935 .
10 And they said H559 W-VQY3MP unto H413 PREP-3MS him , Nay H3808 NADV , my lord H113 , but to buy H7666 food H400 NMS are thy servants H5650 come H935 VQQ3MP .
11 We H5168 are all H3605 one H259 MMS man H376 NMS \'s sons H1121 ; we H587 PPRO-1MP are true H3651 men , thy servants H5650 are H1961 VQQ3MP no H3808 NADV spies H7270 .
12 And he said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP-3MS them , Nay H3808 NADV , but H3588 CONJ to see H7200 the nakedness H6172 CFS of the land H776 D-GFS ye are come H935 .
13 And they said H559 W-VQY3MP , Thy servants H5650 are twelve H8147 brethren H251 NMP , the sons H1121 of one H259 MMS man H376 NMS in the land H776 B-GFS of Canaan H3667 EMS ; and , behold H2009 IJEC , the youngest H6996 D-AMS is this day H3117 D-AMS with H854 PREP our father H1 , and one H259 is not H369 ADV-3MS .
14 And Joseph H3130 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP-3MS them , That H1931 PPRO-3MS is it that H834 RPRO I spoke H1696 VPQ1MS unto H413 you , saying H559 W-VQY3MS , Ye H859 are spies H7270 :
15 Hereby H2063 ye shall be proved H974 : By the life H2416 of Pharaoh H6547 EMS ye shall not go forth H3318 hence H2088 M-DPRO , except H518 PART your youngest H6996 D-AMS brother H251 come H935 hither H2008 .
16 Send H7971 one H259 MMS of H4480 M-PPRO-2MS you , and let him fetch H3947 your brother H251 , and ye H859 W-PPRO-2MP shall be kept in prison H631 , that your words H1697 may be proved H974 , whether there be any truth H571 in H854 PART-2MP you : or else H518 W-PART by the life H2416 of Pharaoh H6547 EMS surely H3588 CONJ ye H859 are spies H7270 .
17 And he put them all together H622 into H413 PREP ward H4929 three H7969 BMS days H3117 NMP .
18 And Joseph H3130 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP-3MS them the third H7992 D-ONUM day H3117 B-AMS , This H2063 DPRO do H6213 , and live H2421 W-VQI2MP ; for I H589 PPRO-1MS fear H3373 God H430 D-EDP :
19 If H518 PART ye H859 PPRO-2MS be true H3651 men , let one H259 MMS of your brethren H251 be bound H631 in the house H1004 B-CMS of your prison H4929 : go H1980 VQI2MP ye H859 W-PPRO-2MP , carry H935 corn H7668 for the famine H7459 of your houses H1004 :
20 But bring H935 your youngest H6996 D-AMS brother H251 unto H413 PREP-1MS me ; so shall your words H1697 be verified H539 , and ye shall not H3808 W-NPAR die H4191 . And they did H6213 W-VQY3MP so H3651 ADV .
21 And they said H559 W-VQY3MP one H376 NMS to H413 PREP another H251 CMS-3MS , We H587 PPRO-1MP are verily H61 guilty H818 concerning H5921 PREP our brother H251 , in that H834 RPRO we saw H7200 the anguish H6869 of his soul H5315 NMS-3MS , when he besought H2603 us , and we would not H3808 W-NPAR hear H8085 ; therefore H3651 ADV is this H2063 distress H6869 come H935 VQQ3FS upon H413 PREP us .
22 And Reuben H7205 answered H6030 W-VQY3MS them , saying H559 L-VQFC , Spoke H559 VQQ1MS I not H3808 W-NPAR unto H413 you , saying H559 L-VQFC , Do not H408 NPAR sin H2398 against the child H3206 ; and ye would not H3808 W-NPAR hear H8085 ? therefore , behold H2009 IJEC , also H1571 W-CONJ his blood H1818 CMS-3MS is required H1875 .
23 And they H1992 W-PPRO-3MP knew H3045 not H3808 NADV that H3588 CONJ Joseph H3130 understood H8085 them ; for H3588 CONJ he spoke unto H996 them by an interpreter H3887 .
24 And he turned himself about H5437 from M-PREP-3MP them , and wept H1058 ; and returned H7725 to H413 PREP-3MS them again , and communed H1696 W-VPY3MS with H413 PREP-3MS them , and took H3947 W-VQY3MS from them Simeon H8095 , and bound H631 him before their eyes H5869 L-CMD-3MP .
25 Then Joseph H3130 commanded H6680 W-VPY3MS to fill H4390 their sacks H3627 with corn H1250 , and to restore H7725 every man H376 NMS \'s money H3701 into H413 PREP his sack H8242 , and to give H5414 them provision H6720 for the way H1870 : and thus H3651 ADV did H6213 W-VQY3MS he unto them .
26 And they laded H5375 W-VQY3MP their asses H2543 with the corn H7668 , and departed H1980 W-VQY3MP thence H8033 M-ADV .
27 And as one H259 of them opened H6605 W-VQY3MS his sack H8242 to give H5414 L-VQFC his ass H2543 provender H4554 in the inn H4411 , he espied H7200 W-VIY3MS his money H3701 ; for , behold H2009 IJEC , it H1931 PPRO-3MS was in his sack H572 \'s mouth H6310 B-CMS .
28 And he said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP his brethren H251 NMP-3MS , My money H3701 is restored H7725 ; and , lo H2009 IJEC , it is even H1571 W-CONJ in my sack H572 : and their heart H3820 CMS-3MP failed H3318 W-VQY3MS them , and they were afraid H2729 , saying H559 W-VQY3MS one H376 NMS to H413 PREP another H251 CMS-3MS , What H4100 IPRO is this H2063 DPRO-3FS that God H430 EDP hath done H6213 VQQ3MS unto us ?
29 And they came H935 W-VQY3MP unto H413 PREP Jacob H3290 their father H1 CMS-3MP unto the land H776 NFS-3FS of Canaan H3667 EMS , and told H5046 him all H3605 NMS that befell H7136 unto them ; saying H559 L-VQFC ,
30 The man H376 , who is the lord H113 of the land H776 D-GFS , spoke H1696 VPQ3MS roughly H7186 to H854 PREP-1MP us , and took H5414 W-VQQ3MS us for spies H7270 of the country H776 D-GFS .
31 And we said H559 unto H413 PREP-3MS him , We H587 are true H3651 men ; we are H1961 no H3808 NADV spies H7270 :
32 We H587 PPRO-1MP be twelve H8147 brethren H251 NMP , sons H1121 of our father H1 ; one H259 is not H369 , and the youngest H6996 is this day H3117 D-AMS with H854 PREP our father H1 in the land H776 B-GFS of Canaan H3667 LMS .
33 And the man H376 D-NMS , the lord H113 of the country H776 D-GFS , said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 us , Hereby H2063 shall I know H3045 VQY1MS that H3588 CONJ ye H859 PPRO-2MS are true H3651 men ; leave H5117 one H259 D-AMS of your brethren H251 here with H854 PREP-1MS me , and take H3947 food for the famine H7459 of your households H1004 , and be gone H1980 :
34 And bring H935 your youngest H6996 D-AMS brother H251 unto H413 PREP-1MS me : then shall I know H3045 that H3588 CONJ ye H859 PPRO-2MS are no H3808 NADV spies H7270 , but H3588 CONJ that ye H859 PPRO-2MS are true H3651 men : so will I deliver H5414 VQY1MS you your brother H251 , and ye shall traffic H5503 in the land H776 D-GFS .
35 And it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS as they H1992 PPRO-3MP emptied H7324 their sacks H8242 , that , behold H2009 IJEC , every man H376 NMS \'s bundle H6872 of money H3701 was in his sack H8242 : and when both they H1992 PPRO-3MP and their father H1 saw H7200 W-VQY3MP the bundles H6872 of money H3701 , they were afraid H3372 .
36 And Jacob H3290 their father H1 CMS-3MP said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP-3MS them , Me have ye bereaved H7921 of my children : Joseph H3130 is not H369 , and Simeon H8095 is not H369 , and ye will take H3947 Benjamin H1144 away : all H3605 these things are H1961 VQQ3MP against H5921 PREP-1MS me .
37 And Reuben H7205 spoke H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP his father H1 CMS-3MS , saying H559 W-VQY3MS , Slay H4191 VHY3FS my two H8147 ONUM sons H1121 CMP-2MS , if H518 PART I bring H935 him not H3808 NADV to H413 PREP thee : deliver H5414 him into H5921 PREP my hand H3027 CFS-1MS , and I H589 W-PPRO-1MS will bring H7725 him to H413 PREP thee again .
38 And he said H559 W-VQY3MS , My son H1121 NMS-1MS shall not H3808 ADV go down H3381 with H5973 PREP-3MP you ; for H3588 CONJ his brother H251 CMS-3MS is dead H4191 , and he H1931 W-PPRO-3MS is left H7604 alone H905 L-CMS-3MS : if mischief H611 befall H7122 him by the way H1870 in the which H834 RPRO ye go H1980 , then shall ye bring down H3381 my gray hairs H7872 with sorrow H3015 to the grave H7585 .
