Habakkuk 1:1 (AMP) Amplified Bibles

1 THE BURDEN or oracle (the thing to be lifted up) which Habakkuk the prophet saw.
2 O Lord, how long shall I cry for help and You will not hear? Or cry out to You of violence and You will not save?
3 Why do You show me iniquity and wrong, and Yourself look upon or cause me to see perverseness and trouble? For destruction and violence are before me; and there is strife, and contention arises.
4 Therefore the law is slackened and justice and a righteous sentence never go forth, for the hostility of the wicked surrounds the uncompromisingly righteous; therefore justice goes forth perverted.
5 Look around you, Habakkuk, replied the Lord among the nations and see! And be astonished! Astounded! For I am putting into effect a work in your days such that you would not believe it if it were told you. Acts 13:40, 41.
6 For behold, I am rousing up the Chaldeans, that bitter and impetuous nation who march through the breadth of the earth to take possession of dwelling places that do not belong to them. II Kings 24:2.
7 The Chaldeans are terrible and dreadful; their justice and dignity proceed only from themselves.
8 Their horses also are swifter than leopards and are fiercer than the evening wolves, and their horsemen spread themselves and press on proudly; yes, their horsemen come from afar; they fly like an eagle that hastens to devour.
9 They all come for violence; their faces turn eagerly forward, and they gather prisoners together like sand.
10 They scoff at kings, and rulers are a derision to them; they ridicule every stronghold, for they heap up dust for earth mounds and take it.
11 Then they sweep by like a wind and pass on, and they load themselves with guilt, as do all men whose own power is their god.
12 Are not You from everlasting, O Lord my God, my Holy One? We shall not die. O Lord, You have appointed the Chaldean to execute Your judgment, and You, O Rock, have established him for chastisement and correction. Deut. 32:4.
13 You are of purer eyes than to behold evil and can not look inactively upon injustice. Why then do You look upon the plunderer? Why are you silent when the wicked one destroys him who is more righteous than the Chaldean oppressor is?
14 Why do You make men like the fish of the sea, like reptiles and creeping things that have no ruler and are defenseless against their foes?
15 The Chaldean brings all of them up with his hook; he catches and drags them out with his net, he gathers them in his dragnet; so he rejoices and is in high spirits.
16 Therefore he sacrifices offerings to his net and burns incense to his dragnet, because from them he lives luxuriously and his food is plentiful and rich.
17 Shall he therefore continue to empty his net and mercilessly go on slaying the nations forever?

3 Why H4100 L-IPRO dost thou show H7200 me iniquity H205 NMS , and cause me to behold H5027 grievance H5999 ? for spoiling H7701 and violence H2555 are before H5048 me : and there are H1961 W-VQY3MS that raise up H5375 strife H7379 NMS and contention H4066 .
4 Therefore H5921 PREP the law H8451 NFS is slacked H6313 , and judgment H4941 NMS doth never H3808 W-NPAR go forth H3318 VQY3MS : for H3588 CONJ the wicked H7563 AMS doth compass about H3803 the righteous H6662 ; therefore H3651 ADV wrong H6127 judgment H4941 NMS proceedeth H3318 VQY3MS .
5 Behold H7200 ye among the heathen H1471 , and regard H5027 , and wonder marvelously H8539 : for H3588 CONJ I will work H6466 a work H6467 CMS in your days H3117 , which ye will not H3808 NADV believe H539 , though H3588 CONJ it be told H5608 you .
6 For H3588 CONJ , lo H2009 , I raise up H6965 VHPMS the Chaldeans H3778 , that bitter H4751 and hasty H4116 nation H1471 , which shall march H1980 through the breadth H4800 of the land H776 GFS , to possess H3423 the dwelling places H4908 that are not H3808 NPAR theirs .
7 They H1931 PPRO-3MS are terrible H366 and dreadful H3372 : their judgment H4941 and their dignity H7613 shall proceed H3318 VQY3MS of H4480 M-PREP-3MS themselves .
8 Their horses H5483 also are swifter H7043 than the leopards H5246 , and are more fierce H2300 than the evening H6153 NUM-MS wolves H2061 : and their horsemen H6571 shall spread H6335 themselves , and their horsemen H6571 shall come H935 VQY3MP from far H7350 M-AMS ; they shall fly H5774 as the eagle H5404 K-NMS that hasteth H2363 to eat H398 .
9 They shall come H935 VQY3MS all H3605 for violence H2555 : their faces H6440 CMP-3MP shall sup up H4041 as the east wind H6921 , and they shall gather H622 the captivity H7628 as the sand H2344 .
10 And they H1931 W-PPRO-3MS shall scoff H7046 at the kings H4428 , and the princes H7336 shall be a scorn H4890 unto them : they H1931 PPRO-3MS shall deride H7832 VQY3MS every H3605 L-CMS stronghold H4013 ; for they shall heap H6651 dust H6083 NMS , and take H3920 it .
11 Then H227 ADV shall his mind H7307 NFS change H2498 , and he shall pass over H5674 , and offend H816 , imputing this H2098 his power H3581 CMS-3MS unto his god H433 .
12 Art thou H859 PPRO-2MS not H3808 ADV from everlasting H6924 M-NMS , O LORD H3068 EDS my God H430 , mine Holy One H6918 ? we shall not H3808 NADV die H4191 . O LORD H3068 EDS , thou hast ordained H7760 them for judgment H4941 L-NMS ; and , O mighty God H6697 W-NMS , thou hast established H3245 them for correction H3198 .
13 Thou art of purer H2889 eyes H5869 NMD than to behold H7200 evil H7451 AMS , and canst H3201 not H3808 NADV look H5027 on H413 PREP iniquity H5999 NMS : wherefore H4100 L-IPRO lookest H5027 thou upon them that deal treacherously H898 , and holdest thy tongue H2790 when the wicked H7563 AMS devoureth H1104 the man that is more righteous H6662 AMS than H4480 M-PREP-3MS he ?
14 And makest H6213 men H120 NMS as the fishes H1709 of the sea H3220 D-NMS , as the creeping things H7431 , that have no H3808 NADV ruler H4910 over them ?
15 They take up H5927 all H3605 of them with the angle H2443 B-NFS , they catch H1641 them in their net H2764 , and gather H622 them in their drag H4365 : therefore H3651 ADV they rejoice H8055 and are glad H1523 .
16 Therefore H5921 PREP they sacrifice H2076 unto their net H2764 , and burn incense H6999 unto their drag H4365 ; because H3588 CONJ by them H1992 their portion H2506 is fat H8082 , and their meat H3978 plenteous H1277 .
17 Shall they therefore H3651 ADV empty H7324 their net H2764 , and not H3808 NADV spare H2550 continually H8548 to slay H2026 the nations H1471 NMP ?
