Matthew 16:1 (AMP) Amplified Bibles

1 NOW THE Pharisees and Sadducees came up to Jesus, and they asked Him to show them a sign (spectacular miracle) from heaven attesting His divine authority.
2 He replied to them, When it is evening you say, It will be fair weather, for the sky is red,
3 And in the morning, It will be stormy today, for the sky is red and has a gloomy and threatening look. You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times.
4 A wicked and morally unfaithful generation craves a sign, but no sign shall be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. Then He left them and went away. Jonah 3:4, 5.
5 When the disciples reached the other side of the sea, they found that they had forgotten to bring any bread.
6 Jesus said to them, Be careful and on your guard against the leaven (ferment) of the Pharisees and Sadducees.
7 And they reasoned among themselves about it, saying, It is because we did not bring any bread.
8 But Jesus, aware of this, asked, Why are you discussing among yourselves the fact that you have no bread? O you men, how little trust you have in Me, how little faith!
9 Do you not yet discern (perceive and understand)? Do you not remember the five loaves of the five thousand, and how many small hand baskets you gathered?
10 Nor the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many large provision baskets you took up?
11 How is it that you fail to understand that I was not talking to you about bread? But beware of the leaven (ferment) of the Pharisees and Sadducees.
12 Then they discerned that He did not tell them to beware of the leaven of bread, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.
13 Now when Jesus went into the region of Caesarea Philippi, He asked His disciples, Who do people say that the Son of Man is?
14 And they answered, Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.
15 He said to them, But who do you yourselves say that I am?
16 Simon Peter replied, You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.
17 Then Jesus answered him, Blessed (happy, fortunate, and to be envied) are you, Simon Bar-Jonah. For flesh and blood men have not revealed this to you, but My Father Who is in heaven.
18 And I tell you, you are Peter Greek, Petros--a large piece of rock, and on this rock Greek, petra--a huge rock like Gibraltar I will build My church, and the gates of Hades (the powers of the infernal region) shall not overpower it or be strong to its detriment or hold out against it.
19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; and whatever you bind (declare to be improper and unlawful) on earth must be what is already bound in heaven; and whatever you loose (declare lawful) on earth must be what is already loosed in heaven. Isa. 22:22.
20 Then He sternly and strictly charged and warned the disciples to tell no one that He was Jesus the Christ.
21 From that time forth Jesus began clearly to show His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders and the high priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised from death.
22 Then Peter took Him aside to speak to Him privately and began to reprove and charge Him sharply, saying, God forbid, Lord! This must never happen to You!
23 But Jesus turned away from Peter and said to him, Get behind Me, Satan! You are in My way an offense and a hindrance and a snare to Me; for you are minding what partakes not of the nature and quality of God, but of men.
24 Then Jesus said to His disciples, If anyone desires to be My disciple, let him deny himself disregard, lose sight of, and forget himself and his own interests and take up his cross and follow Me cleave steadfastly to Me, conform wholly to My example in living and, if need be, in dying, also.
25 For whoever is bent on saving his temporal life his comfort and security here shall lose it eternal life; and whoever loses his life his comfort and security here for My sake shall find it life everlasting.
26 For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his life his blessed life in the kingdom of God? Or what would a man give as an exchange for his blessed life in the kingdom of God?
27 For the Son of Man is going to come in the glory (majesty, splendor) of His Father with His angels, and then He will render account and reward every man in accordance with what he has done.
28 Truly I tell you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in (into) His kingdom.
1 The G3588 T-NPM Pharisees G5330 N-NPM also G2532 CONJ with the Sadducees G4523 N-NPM came G4334 V-2AAP-NPM , and tempting G3985 V-PAP-NPM desired G1905 V-AAI-3P him G846 P-ASM that he would show G1925 V-AAN them G846 P-DPM a sign G4592 N-ASN from G1537 PREP heaven G3772 N-GSM .
2 He G3588 T-NSM answered G611 V-AOP-NSM and said G2036 V-2AAI-3S unto them G846 P-DPM , When it is G1096 V-2ADP-GSF evening G3798 A-GSF , ye say G3004 V-PAI-2P , It will be fair weather G2105 N-NSF : for G1063 CONJ the G3588 T-NSM sky G3772 N-NSM is red G4449 V-PAI-3S .
3 And G2532 CONJ in the morning G4404 ADV , It will be foul weather G5494 N-NSM today G4594 ADV : for G1063 CONJ the G3588 T-NSM sky G3772 N-NSM is red G4449 V-PAI-3S and G2532 CONJ lowering G4768 V-PAP-NSM . O ye hypocrites G5273 N-VPM , ye can G1097 V-PAI-2P discern G1252 V-PAN the T-ASN face G4383 N-ASN of G3588 T-GSM the G3588 T-GSM sky G3772 N-GSM ; but G1161 CONJ can G1410 V-PNI-2P ye not G3756 PRT-N discern the G3588 T-GSM signs G4592 N-APN of G3588 T-GPM the G3588 T-GPM times G2540 N-GPM ?
4 A wicked G4190 A-NSF and G2532 CONJ adulterous G3428 N-NSF generation G1074 N-NSF seeketh after G1934 V-PAI-3S a sign G4592 N-ASN ; and G2532 CONJ there shall no G3756 PRT-N sign G4592 N-NSN be given G1325 V-FPI-3S unto it G846 P-DSF , but G1508 the G3588 T-NSN sign G4592 N-NSN of G3588 T-GSM the G3588 T-GSM prophet G4396 N-GSM Jonah G2495 N-GSM . And G2532 CONJ he left G2641 V-2AAP-NSM them G846 P-APM , and departed G565 V-2AAI-3S .
5 And G2532 CONJ when his G3588 T-NPM disciples G3101 N-NPM were come G2064 V-2AAP-NPM to G1519 PREP the G3588 T-ASN other side G4008 ADV , they had forgotten G1950 V-2ADI-3P to take G2983 V-2AAN bread G740 N-APM .
6 Then G1161 CONJ Jesus G2424 N-NSM said G2036 V-2AAI-3S unto them G846 P-DPM , Take heed G3708 V-PAM-2P and G2532 CONJ beware G4337 V-PAM-2P of G575 PREP the G3588 T-GSF leaven G2219 N-GSF of G3588 T-GPM the G3588 T-GPM Pharisees G5330 N-GPM and G2532 CONJ of the Sadducees G4523 N-GPM .
7 And G1161 CONJ they G3588 T-NPM reasoned G1260 V-INI-3P among G1722 PREP themselves G1438 F-3DPM , saying G3004 V-PAP-NPM , It is because G3754 CONJ we have taken G2983 V-2AAI-1P no G3756 PRT-N bread G740 N-APM .
8 Which G3588 T-NSM when G1161 CONJ Jesus G2424 N-NSM perceived G1097 V-2AAP-NSM , he said G2036 V-2AAI-3S unto them G846 P-DPM , O ye of little faith G3640 A-VPM , why G5101 I-ASN reason G1260 V-PNI-2P ye among G1722 PREP yourselves G1438 F-3DPM , because G3754 CONJ ye have brought G2983 V-2AAI-2P no G3756 PRT-N bread G740 N-APM ?
9 Do ye not yet G3768 ADV understand G3539 V-PAI-2P , neither G3761 ADV remember G3421 V-PAI-2P the G3588 T-APM five G4002 A-NUI loaves G740 N-APM of G3588 T-GPM the G3588 T-GPM five thousand G4000 A-GPM , and G2532 CONJ how many G4214 Q-APM baskets G2894 N-APM ye took up G2983 V-2AAI-2P ?
10 Neither G3761 ADV the G3588 T-APM seven G2033 A-NUI loaves G740 N-APM of G3588 T-GPM the G3588 T-GPM four thousand G5070 A-GPM , and G2532 CONJ how many G4214 Q-APF baskets G4711 N-APF ye took up G2983 V-2AAI-2P ?
11 How G4459 ADV-I is it that ye do not G3756 PRT-N understand G3539 V-PAI-2P that G3754 CONJ I spake G2036 V-2AAI-1S it not G3756 PRT-N to you G5213 P-2DP concerning G4012 PREP bread G740 N-GSM , that ye should beware G4337 V-PAN of G575 PREP the G3588 T-GSF leaven G2219 N-GSF of G3588 T-GPM the G3588 T-GPM Pharisees G5330 N-GPM and G2532 CONJ of the Sadducees G4523 N-GPM ?
12 Then G5119 ADV understood G4920 V-AAI-3P they how G3754 CONJ that he bade G2036 V-2AAI-3S them not G3756 PRT-N beware G4337 V-PAN of G575 PREP the G3588 T-GSF leaven G2219 N-GSF of bread G740 N-GSM , but G235 CONJ of G575 PREP the G3588 T-GSF doctrine G1322 N-GSF of G3588 T-GPM the G3588 T-GPM Pharisees G5330 N-GPM and G2532 CONJ of the Sadducees G4523 N-GPM .
13 When G1161 CONJ Jesus G2424 N-NSM came G2064 V-2AAP-NSM into G1519 PREP the G3588 T-APN coasts G3313 N-APN of G3588 T-GSF Caesarea G2542 N-GSF Philippi G5376 N-GSM , he asked G2065 V-IAI-3S his G3588 T-APM disciples G3101 N-APM , saying G3004 V-PAP-NSM , Whom G3588 T-NPM do men G444 N-NPM say G3004 V-PAI-3P that I G3165 P-1AS the G3588 T-ASM Son G5207 N-ASM of man G444 N-GSM am G1511 V-PXN ?
14 And G1161 CONJ they G3588 T-NPM said G2036 V-2AAI-3P , Some G3588 T-NPM say G3303 PRT that PRT thou G3303 PRT art G3303 PRT John G2491 N-ASM the G3588 T-ASM Baptist G910 N-ASM : some G243 A-NPM , Elijah G2243 N-ASM ; and G1161 CONJ others G2087 A-NPM , Jeremiah G2408 N-ASM , or G2228 PRT one G1520 A-ASM of G3588 T-GPM the G3588 T-GPM prophets G4396 N-GPM .
15 He saith G3004 V-PAI-3S unto them G846 P-DPM , But G1161 CONJ whom G5101 I-ASM say G3004 V-PAI-2P ye G5210 P-2NP that I G3165 P-1AS am G1511 V-PXN ?
16 And G1161 CONJ Simon G4613 N-NSM Peter G4074 N-NSM answered G611 V-AOP-NSM and said G2036 V-2AAI-3S , Thou G4771 P-2NS art G1488 V-PXI-2S the G3588 T-NSM Christ G5547 N-NSM , the G3588 T-NSM Son G5207 N-NSM of G3588 T-GSM the G3588 T-GSM living G2198 V-PAP-GSM God G2316 N-GSM .
17 And G2532 CONJ Jesus G2424 N-NSM answered G611 V-AOP-NSM and said G2036 V-2AAI-3S unto him G846 P-DSM , Blessed G3107 A-NSM art G1488 V-PXI-2S thou , Simon G4613 N-VSM Bar G920 ARAM - jona : for G3754 CONJ flesh G4561 N-NSF and G2532 CONJ blood G129 N-NSN hath not G3756 PRT-N revealed G601 V-AAI-3S it unto thee G4671 P-2DS , but G235 CONJ my G3588 T-NSM Father G3962 N-NSM which G3588 T-NSM is in G1722 PREP heaven G3772 N-DPM .
18 And G1161 CONJ I say also G2504 P-1NS-C unto thee G4671 P-2DS , That G3754 CONJ thou G4771 P-2NS art G1488 V-PXI-2S Peter G4074 N-NSM , and G2532 CONJ upon G1909 PREP this G3588 T-DSF rock G4073 N-DSF I will build G3618 V-FAI-1S my G3588 T-ASF church G1577 N-ASF ; and G2532 CONJ the gates G4439 N-NPF of hell G86 N-GSM shall not G3756 PRT-N prevail against G2729 V-FAI-3P it G846 P-GSF .
19 And G2532 CONJ I will give G1325 V-FAI-1S unto thee G4671 P-2DS the G3588 T-APF keys G2807 N-APF of G3588 T-GSF the G3588 T-GSF kingdom G932 N-GSF of heaven G3772 N-GPM : and G2532 CONJ whatsoever G3739 R-ASN thou shalt bind G1210 V-AAS-2S on G1909 PREP earth G1093 N-GSF shall G2071 V-FXI-3S be bound G1210 V-RPP-NSN in G1722 PREP heaven G3772 N-DPM : and G2532 CONJ whatsoever G3739 R-ASN thou shalt loose G3089 V-AAS-2S on G1909 PREP earth G1093 N-GSF shall be G2071 V-FXI-3S loosed G3089 V-RPP-NSN in G1722 PREP heaven G3772 N-DPM .
20 Then G5119 ADV charged G1291 V-AMI-3S he G3588 T-DPM his G3588 T-DPM disciples G3101 N-DPM that G2443 CONJ they should tell G2036 V-2AAS-3P no man G3367 A-DSM that G3752 he G846 P-GSM was G2076 V-PXI-3S Jesus G2424 N-NSM the G3588 T-NSM Christ G5547 N-NSM .
21 From G575 PREP that time forth G5119 ADV began G756 V-ADI-3S Jesus G2424 N-NSM to show G1166 V-PAN unto his G3588 T-DPM disciples G3101 N-DPM , how that G3754 CONJ he G846 P-GSM must G1163 V-PQI-3S go G565 V-2AAN unto G1519 PREP Jerusalem G2414 N-ASF , and G2532 CONJ suffer G3958 V-2AAN many things G4183 A-APN of G575 PREP the G3588 T-GPM elders G4245 A-GPM and G2532 CONJ chief priests G749 N-GPM and G2532 CONJ scribes G1122 N-GPM , and G2532 CONJ be killed G615 V-APN , and G2532 CONJ be raised again G1453 V-APN the G3588 T-DSF third G5154 A-DSF day G2250 N-DSF .
22 Then G2532 CONJ Peter G4074 N-NSM took G4355 V-2AMP-NSM him G846 P-ASM , and began G756 V-ADI-3S to rebuke G2008 V-PAN him G846 P-DSM , saying G3004 V-PAP-NSM , Be it far G2436 A-NSM-ATT from thee G4671 P-2DS , Lord G2962 N-VSM : this G5124 D-NSN shall not G3364 be G2071 V-FXI-3S unto thee G4671 P-2DS .
23 But G1161 CONJ he G3588 T-NSM turned G4762 V-2APP-NSM , and said G2036 V-2AAI-3S unto Peter G4074 N-DSM , Get G5217 V-PAM-2S thee behind G3694 ADV me G3450 P-1GS , Satan G4567 N-VSM : thou art G1488 V-PXI-2S an offense G4625 N-ASN unto me G3450 P-1GS : for G3754 CONJ thou savorest G5426 V-PAI-2S not G3756 PRT-N the things G3588 T-DSM that be of God G2316 N-GSM , but G235 CONJ those G3588 T-APN that be of men G444 N-GPM .
24 Then G5119 ADV said G2036 V-2AAI-3S Jesus G2424 N-NSM unto his G3588 T-DPM disciples G3101 N-DPM , If any G1536 man will G2309 V-PAI-3S come G2064 V-2AAN after G3694 ADV me G3450 P-1GS , let him deny G533 V-ADM-3S himself G1438 F-3ASM , and G2532 CONJ take up G142 V-AAM-3S his G3588 T-ASM cross G4716 N-ASM , and G2532 CONJ follow G190 V-PAM-3S me G3427 P-1DS .
25 For G1063 CONJ whosoever G3739 R-NSM will G2309 V-PAS-3S save G4982 V-AAN his G3588 T-ASF life G5590 N-ASF shall lose G622 V-FAI-3S it G846 P-GSM : and G1161 CONJ whosoever G3739 R-NSM will lose G622 V-AAS-3S his G3588 T-ASF life G5590 N-ASF for my sake G1752 ADV shall find G2147 V-FAI-3S it G846 P-ASF .
26 For G1063 CONJ what G5101 I-ASN is a man G444 N-NSM profited G5623 V-PPI-3S , if G1437 COND he shall gain G2770 V-AAS-3S the G3588 T-ASM whole G3650 A-ASM world G2889 N-ASM , and G2532 lose G2210 V-APS-3S his own G848 soul G5590 N-ASF ? or G2228 PRT what G5101 I-ASN shall a man G444 N-NSM give G1325 V-FAI-3S in exchange G465 N-ASN for G3588 T-GSF his G3588 T-GSF soul G5590 N-GSF ?
27 For G1063 CONJ the G3588 T-NSM Son G5207 N-NSM of man G444 N-GSM shall G3195 V-PAI-3S come G2064 V-PNN in G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DSF glory G1391 N-DSF of G3588 T-GSM his G3588 T-GSM Father G3962 N-GSM with G3326 PREP his G3588 T-GPM angels G32 N-GPM ; and G2532 CONJ then G5119 ADV he shall reward G591 V-FAI-3S every man G1538 A-DSM according G2596 PREP to his G3588 T-ASF works G4234 N-ASF .
28 Verily G281 HEB I say G3004 V-PAI-1S unto you G5213 P-2DP , There be G1526 V-PXI-3P some G5100 X-NPM standing G2476 V-RAP-NPM here G5602 ADV , which G3748 R-NPM shall not G3361 PRT-N taste G1089 V-ADS-3P of death G2288 N-GSM , till G2193 CONJ they see G1492 V-2AAS-3P the G3588 T-ASM Son G5207 N-ASM of man G444 N-GSM coming G2064 V-PNP-ASM in G1722 PREP his G3588 T-DSF kingdom G932 N-DSF .
