James 4:1 (AMP) Amplified Bibles

1 WHAT LEADS to strife (discord and feuds) and how do conflicts (quarrels and fightings) originate among you? Do they not arise from your sensual desires that are ever warring in your bodily members?
2 You are jealous and covet what others have and your desires go unfulfilled; so you become murderers. To hate is to murder as far as your hearts are concerned. You burn with envy and anger and are not able to obtain the gratification, the contentment, and the happiness that you seek, so you fight and war. You do not have, because you do not ask. I John 3:15.
3 Or you do ask God for them and yet fail to receive, because you ask with wrong purpose and evil, selfish motives. Your intention is when you get what you desire to spend it in sensual pleasures.
4 You are like unfaithful wives having illicit love affairs with the world and breaking your marriage vow to God! Do you not know that being the world's friend is being God's enemy? So whoever chooses to be a friend of the world takes his stand as an enemy of God.
5 Or do you suppose that the Scripture is speaking to no purpose that says, The Spirit Whom He has caused to dwell in us yearns over us and He yearns for the Spirit to be welcome with a jealous love? Jer. 3:14; Hos. 2:19ff.
6 But He gives us more and more grace (power of the Holy Spirit, to meet this evil tendency and all others fully). That is why He says, God sets Himself against the proud and haughty, but gives grace continually to the lowly (those who are humble enough to receive it). Prov. 3:34.
7 So be subject to God. Resist the devil stand firm against him, and he will flee from you.
8 Come close to God and He will come close to you. Recognize that you are sinners, get your soiled hands clean; realize that you have been disloyal wavering individuals with divided interests, and purify your hearts of your spiritual adultery.
9 As you draw near to God be deeply penitent and grieve, even weep over your disloyalty. Let your laughter be turned to grief and your mirth to dejection and heartfelt shame for your sins.
10 Humble yourselves feeling very insignificant in the presence of the Lord, and He will exalt you He will lift you up and make your lives significant.
11 My brethren, do not speak evil about or accuse one another. He that maligns a brother or judges his brother is maligning and criticizing the Law and judging the Law. But if you judge the Law, you are not a practicer of the Law but a censor and judge of it.
12 One only is the Lawgiver and Judge Who is able to save and to destroy the One Who has the absolute power of life and death. But you who are you that you presume to pass judgment on your neighbor?
13 Come now, you who say, Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a city and spend a year there and carry on our business and make money.
14 Yet you do not know the least thing about what may happen tomorrow. What is the nature of your life? You are really but a wisp of vapor (a puff of smoke, a mist) that is visible for a little while and then disappears into thin air.
15 You ought instead to say, If the Lord is willing, we shall live and we shall do this or that thing.
16 But as it is, you boast falsely in your presumption and your self-conceit. All such boasting is wrong.
17 So any person who knows what is right to do but does not do it, to him it is sin.

2 Ye lust G1937 V-PAI-2P , and G2532 CONJ have G2192 V-PAI-2P not G3756 PRT-N : ye kill G5407 V-PAI-2P , and G2532 CONJ desire to have G2206 V-PAI-2P , and G2532 CONJ cannot G1410 V-PNI-2P obtain G2013 V-2AAN : ye fight G3164 V-PNI-2P and G2532 CONJ war G4170 V-PAI-2P , yet G1161 ye have G2192 V-PAI-2P not G3756 PRT-N , because ye G5209 P-2AP ask G154 V-PMN not G3361 PRT-N .
3 Ye ask G154 V-PAI-2P , and G2532 CONJ receive G2983 V-PAI-2P not G3756 PRT-N , because G1360 CONJ ye ask G154 V-PMI-2P amiss G2560 ADV , that G2443 CONJ ye may consume G1159 V-AAS-2P it upon G1722 PREP your G3588 T-DPF lusts G2237 N-DPF .
4 Ye adulterers G3432 N-VPM and G2532 CONJ adulteresses G3428 N-VPF , know G1492 V-RAI-2P ye not G3756 PRT-N that G3754 CONJ the G3588 T-NSF friendship G5373 N-NSF of G3588 T-GSM the G3588 T-GSM world G2889 N-GSM is G2076 V-PXI-3S enmity G2189 N-NSF with God G2316 N-GSM ? whosoever G3739 R-NSM therefore G3767 CONJ will G1014 V-AOS-3S be G1511 V-PXN a friend G5384 A-NSM of G3588 T-GSM the G3588 T-GSM world G2889 N-GSM is G2525 V-PPI-3S the G3588 T-GSM enemy G2190 A-NSM of God G2316 N-GSM .
5 Do ye G2228 PRT think G1380 V-PAI-2P that G3754 CONJ the G3588 T-NSF Scripture G1124 N-NSF saith G3004 V-PAI-3S in vain G2761 ADV , The G3588 T-NSN spirit G4151 N-NSN that G3739 R-NSN dwelleth G2730 V-AAI-3S in G1722 PREP us G2254 P-1DP lusteth G1971 V-PAI-3S to G4314 PREP envy G5355 N-ASM ?
6 But G1161 CONJ he giveth G1325 V-PAI-3S more G3187 grace G5485 N-ASF . Wherefore G1352 CONJ he G3588 T-NSM saith G3004 V-PAI-3S , God G2316 N-NSM resisteth G498 V-PMI-3S the proud G5244 A-DPM , but G1161 CONJ giveth G1325 V-PAI-3S grace G5485 N-ASF unto the humble G5011 A-DPM .
7 Submit G5293 V-2APM-2P yourselves therefore G3767 CONJ to God G2316 N-DSM . Resist G436 V-2AAM-2P the G3588 T-DSM devil G1228 A-DSM , and G2532 CONJ he will flee G5343 V-FDI-3S from G575 PREP you G5216 P-2GP .
8 Draw nigh G1448 V-AAM-2P to God G2316 N-DSM , and G2532 CONJ he will draw nigh G1448 V-FAI-3S to you G5213 P-2DP . Cleanse G2511 V-AAM-2P your hands G5495 N-APF , ye sinners G268 A-VPM ; and G2532 CONJ purify G48 V-AAM-2P your hearts G2588 N-APF , ye double minded G1374 A-VPM .
9 Be afflicted G5003 V-AAM-2P , and G2532 CONJ mourn G3996 V-AAM-2P , and G2532 CONJ weep G2799 V-AAM-2P : let your G3588 T-NSM laughter G1071 N-NSM be turned G3344 V-2APM-3S to G1519 PREP mourning G3997 N-ASN , and G2532 CONJ your joy G5479 N-NSF to G1519 PREP heaviness G2726 N-ASF .
10 Humble yourselves G5013 V-APM-2P in the sight G1799 ADV of G3588 T-GSM the G3588 T-GSM Lord G2962 N-GSM , and G2532 CONJ he shall lift you up G5312 V-FAI-3S .
11 Speak not evil G2635 V-PAM-2P one of another G240 C-GPM , brethren G80 N-VPM . He that speaketh evil G2635 V-PAP-NSM of his brother G80 N-GSM , and G2532 CONJ judgeth G2919 V-PAP-NSM his G3588 T-ASM brother G80 N-ASM , speaketh evil G2635 V-PAI-3S of the law G3551 N-GSM , and G2532 CONJ judgeth G2919 V-PAI-3S the law G3551 N-ASM : but G1161 CONJ if G1487 COND thou judge G2919 V-PAI-2S the law G3551 N-ASM , thou art G1488 V-PXI-2S not G3756 PRT-N a doer G4163 N-NSM of the law G3551 N-GSM , but G235 CONJ a judge G2923 N-NSM .
12 There is G2076 V-PXI-3S one G1520 A-NSM lawgiver G3550 N-NSM , who is able G1410 V-PNP-NSM to save G4982 V-AAN and G2532 CONJ to destroy G622 V-AAN : who G5101 I-NSM art G1488 V-PXI-2S thou G4771 P-2NS that G3739 R-NSM judgest G2919 V-PAI-2S another G2087 A-ASM ?
13 Go to G33 now G3568 ADV , ye that say G3004 V-PAP-NPM , Today G4594 ADV or G2532 CONJ tomorrow G839 ADV we will go G4198 V-ADS-1P into G1519 PREP such G3588 T-ASF a city G4172 N-ASF , and G2532 CONJ continue G4160 V-AAS-1P there G1563 ADV a G1520 A-ASM year G1763 N-ASM , and G2532 CONJ buy and sell G1710 V-ADS-1P , and G2532 CONJ get gain G2770 V-AAS-1P :
14 Whereas G3748 R-NPM ye know G1987 V-PNI-2P not G3756 PRT-N what G3588 T-ASN shall be on the G3588 T-GSF morrow G839 ADV . For G1063 CONJ what G4169 I-NSF is your G3588 T-NSF life G2222 N-NSF ? It is G2076 even G1063 CONJ a vapor G822 N-NSF , that appeareth G5316 V-PEP-NSF for G4314 PREP a little time G3641 A-ASN , and G1161 CONJ then G1899 ADV vanisheth away G853 V-PPP-NSF .
15 For G473 PREP that ye G5209 P-2AP ought to say G3004 V-PAN , If G1437 COND the G3588 T-NSM Lord G2962 N-NSM will G2309 V-AAS-3S , we shall G2532 CONJ live G2198 V-AAS-1P , and G2532 CONJ do G4160 V-AAS-1P this G5124 D-ASN , or G2228 PRT that G1565 D-ASN .
16 But G1161 CONJ now G3568 ADV ye rejoice G2744 V-PNI-2P in G1722 PREP your G3588 T-DPF boastings G212 N-DPF : all G3956 A-NSF such G5108 D-NSF rejoicing G2746 N-NSF is G2076 V-PXI-3S evil G4190 A-NSF .
17 Therefore G3767 CONJ to him that knoweth G1492 V-RAP-DSM to do G4160 V-PAN good G2570 A-ASM , and G2532 CONJ doeth G4160 V-PAP-DSM it not G3361 PRT-N , to him G846 P-DSM it is G2076 V-PXI-3S sin G266 N-NSF .
