Romans 9:1 (AMP) Amplified Bibles

1 I AM speaking the truth in Christ. I am not lying; my conscience enlightened and prompted by the Holy Spirit bearing witness with me
2 That I have bitter grief and incessant anguish in my heart.
3 For I could wish that I myself were accursed and cut off and banished from Christ for the sake of my brethren and instead of them, my natural kinsmen and my fellow countrymen. Exod. 32:32.
4 For they are Israelites, and to them belong God's adoption as a nation and the glorious Presence (Shekinah). With them were the special covenants made, to them was the Law given. To them the temple worship was revealed and God's own promises announced. Exod. 4:22; Hos. 11:1.
5 To them belong the patriarchs, and as far as His natural descent was concerned, from them is the Christ, Who is exalted and supreme over all, God, blessed forever! Amen (so let it be).
6 However, it is not as though God's Word had failed coming to nothing. For it is not everybody who is a descendant of Jacob (Israel) who belongs to the true Israel.
7 And they are not all the children of Abraham because they are by blood his descendants. No, the promise was Your descendants will be called and counted through the line of Isaac though Abraham had an older son. Gen. 21:9-12.
8 That is to say, it is not the children of the body of Abraham who are made God's children, but it is the offspring to whom the promise applies that shall be counted as Abraham's true descendants.
9 For this is what the promise said, About this time next year will I return and Sarah shall have a son. Gen. 18:10.
10 And not only that, but this too: Rebecca conceived two sons under exactly the same circumstances by our forefather Isaac,
11 And the children were yet unborn and had so far done nothing either good or evil. Even so, in order further to carry out God's purpose of selection (election, choice), which depends not on works or what men can do, but on Him Who calls them,
12 It was said to her that the elder son should serve the younger son. Gen. 25:21-23.
13 As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated (held in relative disregard in comparison with My feeling for Jacob). Mal. 1:2, 3.
14 What shall we conclude then? Is there injustice upon God's part? Certainly not!
15 For He says to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy and I will have compassion (pity) on whom I will have compassion. Exod. 33:19.
16 So then God's gift is not a question of human will and human effort, but of God's mercy. It depends not on one's own willingness nor on his strenuous exertion as in running a race, but on God's having mercy on him.
17 For the Scripture says to Pharaoh, I have raised you up for this very purpose of displaying My power in dealing with you, so that My name may be proclaimed the whole world over.
18 So then He has mercy on whomever He wills (chooses) and He hardens (makes stubborn and unyielding the heart of) whomever He wills.
19 You will say to me, Why then does He still find fault and blame us for sinning? For who can resist and withstand His will?
20 But who are you, a mere man, to criticize and contradict and answer back to God? Will what is formed say to him that formed it, Why have you made me thus? Isa. 29:16; 45:9.
21 Has the potter no right over the clay, to make out of the same mass (lump) one vessel for beauty and distinction and honorable use, and another for menial or ignoble and dishonorable use?
22 What if God, although fully intending to show the awfulness of His wrath and to make known His power and authority, has tolerated with much patience the vessels (objects) of His anger which are ripe for destruction? Prov. 16:4.
23 And what if He thus purposes to make known and show the wealth of His glory in dealing with the vessels (objects) of His mercy which He has prepared beforehand for glory,
24 Even including ourselves whom He has called, not only from among the Jews but also from among the Gentiles (heathen)?
25 Just as He says in Hosea, Those who were not My people I will call My people, and her who was not beloved I will call My beloved. Hos. 2:23.
26 And it shall be that in the very place where it was said to them, You are not My people, they shall be called sons of the living God. Hos. 1:10.
27 And Isaiah calls out (solemnly cries aloud) over Israel: Though the number of the sons of Israel be like the sand of the sea, only the remnant (a small part of them) will be saved from perdition, condemnation, judgment!
28 For the Lord will execute His sentence upon the earth He will conclude and close His account with men completely and without delay, rigorously cutting it short in His justice. Isa. 10:22, 23.
29 It is as Isaiah predicted, If the Lord of hosts had not left us a seed from which to propagate descendants, we Israel would have fared like Sodom and have been made like Gomorrah. Isa. 1:9.
30 What shall we say then? That Gentiles who did not follow after righteousness who did not seek salvation by right relationship to God have attained it by faith a righteousness imputed by God, based on and produced by faith,
31 Whereas Israel, though ever in pursuit of a law for the securing of righteousness (right standing with God), actually did not succeed in fulfilling the Law. Isa. 51:1.
32 For what reason? Because they pursued it not through faith, relying instead on the merit of their works they did not depend on faith but on what they could do. They have stumbled over the Stumbling Stone. Isa. 8:14; 28:16.
33 As it is written, Behold I am laying in Zion a Stone that will make men stumble, a Rock that will make them fall; but he who believes in Him who adheres to, trusts in, and relies on Him shall not be put to shame nor be disappointed in his expectations. Isa. 28:16.

4 Who G3748 R-NPM are G1526 V-PXI-3P Israelites G2475 N-NPM ; to whom G3739 R-GPM pertaineth the G3588 T-NSF adoption G5206 N-NSF , and G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-NSF glory G1391 N-NSF , and G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-NPF covenants G1242 N-NPF , and G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-NSF giving of the law G3548 N-NSF , and G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-NSF service G2999 N-NSF of God , and G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-NPF promises G1860 N-NPF ;
5 Whose G3739 R-GPM are the G3588 T-NPM fathers G3962 N-NPM , and G2532 CONJ of G1537 PREP whom G3588 T-NSN as concerning G2596 PREP the G3588 T-NSM flesh G4561 N-ASF Christ G5547 N-NSM came , who is G5607 V-PXP-NSM over G1909 PREP all G3956 A-GPN , God G2316 N-NSM blessed G2128 A-NSM forever G1519 PREP . 6 Not G3756 PRT-N as though G3754 CONJ the G3588 T-NSM word G3056 N-NSM of God G2316 N-GSM hath taken none effect G1601 V-RAI-3S . For G1063 CONJ they G3778 D-NPM are not G3756 PRT-N all G3956 A-NPM Israel G2474 N-PRI , which G3588 T-NPM are of G1537 PREP Israel G2474 N-PRI :
7 Neither G3761 ADV , because G3754 CONJ they are G1526 V-PXI-3P the seed G4690 N-NSN of Abraham G11 N-PRI , are they all G3956 A-NPM children G5043 N-NPN : but G235 CONJ , In G1722 PREP Isaac G2464 N-PRI shall thy G4671 P-2DS seed G4690 N-NSN be called G2564 V-FPI-3S .
8 That is G5123 , They G3588 T-NPN which G3588 T-NPN are the G3588 T-NPN children G5043 N-NPN of G3588 T-GSF the G3588 T-GSF flesh G4561 N-GSF , these G5023 D-NPN are not G3756 PRT-N the G3588 T-GSM children G5043 N-NPN of God G2316 N-GSM : but G235 CONJ the G3588 T-NPN children G5043 N-NPN of G3588 T-GSF the G3588 T-GSF promise G1860 N-GSF are counted G3049 V-PNI-3S for G1519 PREP the seed G4690 N-ASN .
9 For G1063 CONJ this G3778 D-NSM is the G3588 T-NSM word G3056 N-NSM of promise G1860 N-GSF , At G2596 PREP this G3588 T-ASM time G2540 N-ASM will I come G2064 V-FDI-1S , and G2532 CONJ Sarah G4564 N-DSF shall have G2071 V-FXI-3S a son G5207 N-NSM .
10 And G1161 CONJ not G3756 PRT-N only G3440 ADV this ; but G235 CONJ when Rebecca G4479 N-NSF also G2532 CONJ had G2192 V-PAP-NSF conceived G2845 N-ASF by G1537 PREP one G1520 A-GSM , even by our G3588 T-GSM father G3962 N-GSM Isaac G2464 N-PRI ;
11 ( CONJ For CONJ the children being not yet G3380 ADV born G1080 V-APP-GPM , neither G3366 CONJ having done G4238 V-AAP-GPM any G5100 X-ASN good G18 A-ASN or G2228 PRT evil G2556 A-ASN , that G2443 CONJ the G3588 T-NSF purpose G4286 N-NSF of G3588 T-NSF God G2316 N-GSM according G2596 PREP to election G1589 N-ASF might stand G3306 V-PAS-3S , not G3756 PRT-N of G1537 PREP works G2041 N-GPN , but G235 CONJ of G3588 T-GSM him that calleth G2564 V-PAP-GSM ; )
12 It was said G4483 V-API-3S unto her G846 P-DSF , The G3588 T-NSM elder G3187 A-NSM-C shall serve G1398 V-FAI-3S the G3588 T-DSM younger G1640 A-DSM .
13 As G2531 ADV it G3588 T-ASM is written G1125 V-RPI-3S , Jacob G2384 N-PRI have I G3588 T-ASM loved G25 V-AAI-1S , but G1161 CONJ Esau G2269 N-PRI have I hated G3404 V-AAI-1S .
14 What G5101 I-ASN shall we say G2046 V-FAI-1P then G3767 CONJ ? Is there G3361 PRT-N unrighteousness G93 PRT-N with G3844 PREP God G2316 N-DSM ? God forbid G1096 V-2ADO-3S .
15 For G1063 CONJ he saith G3004 V-PAI-3S to Moses G3475 N-DSM , I will have mercy G1653 V-FAI-1S on whom G3739 R-ASM I will have mercy G1653 V-PAS-1S , and G2532 CONJ I will have compassion G3627 V-FAI-1S on whom G3739 R-ASM I will have compassion G3627 V-PAS-1S .
16 So G686 PRT then G3767 CONJ it is not G3756 PRT-N of him that willeth G2309 V-PAP-GSM , nor G3761 ADV of him that runneth G5143 V-PAP-GSM , but G235 CONJ of G3588 T-GSM God G2316 N-GSM that showeth mercy G1653 V-PAP-GSM .
17 For G1063 CONJ the G3588 T-NSF Scripture G1124 N-NSF saith G3004 V-PAI-3S unto Pharaoh G5328 N-PRI , Even for G1519 PREP this same purpose G5124 D-ASN have I raised thee up G1825 V-AAI-1S , that G3704 ADV I might show G1731 V-AMS-1S my G3588 T-ASF power G1411 N-ASF in G1722 PREP thee G4671 P-2DS , and G2532 CONJ that G3704 ADV my G3588 T-NSN name G3686 N-NSN might be declared G1229 V-2APS-3S throughout G1722 PREP all G3956 A-DSF the G3588 T-DSF earth G1093 N-DSF .
18 Therefore G686 PRT hath he mercy G1653 V-PAI-3S on whom G3739 R-ASM he will G2309 V-PAI-3S have mercy , and G1161 CONJ whom G3739 R-ASM he will G2309 V-PAI-3S he hardeneth G4645 V-PAI-3S .
19 Thou wilt say G2046 V-FAI-2S then G3767 CONJ unto me G3427 P-1DS , Why G5101 I-ASN doth he yet G2089 ADV find fault G3201 V-PNI-3S ? For G1063 CONJ who G5101 I-NSM hath resisted G436 V-RAI-3S his G846 P-GSM will G1013 N-DSN ?
20 Nay but G3304 PRT , O G5599 INJ man G444 N-VSM , who G5101 I-NSM art G1488 V-PXI-2S thou G4771 P-2NS that G3588 T-DSM repliest against G470 V-PNP-NSM God G2316 N-DSM ? Shall G3361 PRT-N the G3588 T-NSN thing formed G4110 N-NSN say G2046 V-FAI-3S to him that formed G4111 V-AAP-DSM it , Why G5101 I-ASN hast thou made G4160 V-AAI-2S me G3165 P-1AS thus G3779 ADV ?
21 Hath G2192 V-PAI-3S not G3756 PRT-N the G3588 T-NSM potter G2763 N-NSM power G1849 N-ASF over the G3588 T-GSM clay G4081 N-GSM , of G1537 PREP the G3588 T-GSN same G846 P-GSN lump G5445 N-GSN to make G4160 V-AAN one G3739 R-ASN vessel G4632 N-ASN unto G1519 PREP honor G5092 N-ASF , and G1161 CONJ another G3739 R-ASN unto G1519 PREP dishonor G819 N-ASF ?
22 What G1161 CONJ if G1487 COND God G2316 N-NSM , willing G2309 V-PAP-NSM to show G1731 V-AMN his wrath G3709 N-ASF , and G2532 CONJ to make his power known G1107 V-AAN , endured G5342 V-AAI-3S with G1722 PREP much G4183 A-DSF longsuffering G3115 N-DSF the vessels G4632 N-APN of wrath G3709 N-GSF fitted G2675 V-RPP-APN to G1519 PREP destruction G684 N-ASF :

24 Even G2532 CONJ us G2248 P-1AP , whom G3739 R-APM he hath called G2564 V-AAI-3S , not G3756 PRT-N of G1537 PREP the Jews G2453 A-GPM only G3440 ADV , but G235 CONJ also G2532 CONJ of G1537 PREP the Gentiles G1484 N-GPN ?
25 As G5613 ADV he saith G3004 V-PAI-3S also G2532 CONJ in G1722 PREP Hosea G5617 N-PRI , I will call G2564 V-FAI-1S them my G3450 P-1GS people G2992 N-ASM , which G3588 T-ASM were not G3756 PRT-N my G3450 P-1GS people G2992 N-ASM ; and G2532 CONJ her beloved G25 V-RPP-ASF , which was not beloved G25 V-RPP-ASF .
26 And G2532 CONJ it shall come to pass G2071 V-FXI-3S , that in G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DSM place G5117 N-DSM where G3757 it was said G4483 V-API-3S unto them G846 P-DPM , Ye G5210 P-2NP are not G3756 PRT-N my G3450 P-1GS people G2992 N-NSM ; there G1563 ADV shall they be called G2564 V-FPI-3P the children G5207 N-NPM of the living G2198 V-PAP-GSM God G2316 N-GSM .
27 Isaiah G2268 N-NSM also G1161 CONJ crieth G2896 V-PAI-3S concerning G5228 PREP Israel G2474 N-PRI , Though G1437 COND the G3588 T-NSM number G706 N-NSM of G3588 T-GPM the G3588 T-GPM children G5207 N-GPM of Israel G2474 N-PRI be G5600 V-PXS-3S as G5613 ADV the G3588 T-NSF sand G285 N-NSF of G3588 T-GSF the G3588 T-GSF sea G2281 N-GSF , a remnant G2640 N-NSN shall be saved G4982 V-FPI-3S :
28 For G1063 CONJ he will finish G4931 V-PAP-NSM the work G3056 N-ASM , and G2532 CONJ cut it short G4932 V-PAP-NSM in G1722 PREP righteousness G1343 N-DSF : because G3754 CONJ a short G4932 V-RPP-ASM work G3056 N-ASM will the Lord G2962 N-NSM make G4160 V-FAI-3S upon G1909 PREP the G3588 T-GSF earth G1093 N-GSF .
29 And G2532 CONJ as G2531 ADV Isaiah G2268 N-NSM said before G4280 V-RAI-3S , Except G1508 the Lord G2962 N-NSM of Sabaoth G4519 HEB had left G1459 V-2AAI-3S us G2254 P-1DP a seed G4690 N-ASN , we had been G1096 V-AOI-1P as G5613 ADV Sodom G4670 N-NPN , and G2532 CONJ been made like G3666 V-API-1P unto G5613 ADV Gomorrah G1116 N-NSF .
30 What G5101 I-ASN shall we say G2046 V-FAI-1P then G3767 CONJ ? That G3754 CONJ the Gentiles G1484 N-NPN , which G3588 T-NPN followed G1377 V-PAP-NPN not G3361 PRT-N after righteousness G1343 N-ASF , have attained G2638 V-2AAI-3S to righteousness G1343 N-ASF , even G1161 CONJ the righteousness G1343 N-ASF which G3588 T-ASF is of G1537 PREP faith G4102 N-GSF .
31 But G1161 CONJ Israel G2474 N-PRI , which followed G1377 V-PAP-NSM after the law G3551 N-ASM of righteousness G1343 N-GSF , hath not G3756 PRT-N attained G5348 V-AAI-3S to G1519 PREP the law G3551 N-ASM of righteousness G1343 N-GSF .
32 Wherefore G1302 ? Because G3754 CONJ they sought it not G3756 PRT-N by G1537 PREP faith G4102 N-GSF , but G235 CONJ as it were G5613 ADV by G1537 PREP the works G2041 N-GPN of the law G3551 N-GSM . For G1063 CONJ they G3588 T-GSN stumbled G4350 V-AAI-3P at that stumblingstone G4348 N-GSN ;
33 As G2531 ADV it is written G1125 V-RPI-3S , Behold G2400 V-2AAM-2S , I lay G5087 V-PAI-1S in G1722 PREP Zion G4622 N-PRI a stumblingstone G4348 N-GSN and G2532 CONJ rock G4073 N-ASF of offense G4625 N-GSN : and G2532 CONJ whosoever G3588 T-NSM believeth G4100 V-PAP-NSM on G1909 PREP him G846 P-DSM shall not G3756 PRT-N be ashamed G2617 V-FPI-3S .
