Mark 5:1 (AMP) Amplified Bibles

1 THEY CAME to the other side of the sea to the region of the Gerasenes.
2 And as soon as He got out of the boat, there met Him out of the tombs a man under the power of an unclean spirit.
3 This man continually lived among the tombs, and no one could subdue him any more, even with a chain;
4 For he had been bound often with shackles for the feet and handcuffs, but the handcuffs of light chains he wrenched apart, and the shackles he rubbed and ground together and broke in pieces; and no one had strength enough to restrain or tame him.
5 Night and day among the tombs and on the mountains he was always shrieking and screaming and beating and bruising and cutting himself with stones.
6 And when from a distance he saw Jesus, he ran and fell on his knees before Him in homage,
7 And crying out with a loud voice, he said, What have You to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? What is there in common between us? I solemnly implore you by God, do not begin to torment me!
8 For Jesus was commanding, Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!
9 And He asked him, What is your name? He replied, My name is Legion, for we are many.
10 And he kept begging Him urgently not to send them himself and the other demons away out of that region.
11 Now a great herd of hogs was grazing there on the hillside.
12 And the demons begged Him, saying, Send us to the hogs, that we may go into them!
13 So He gave them permission. And the unclean spirits came out of the man and entered into the hogs; and the herd, numbering about 2,000, rushed headlong down the steep slope into the sea and were drowned in the sea.
14 The hog feeders ran away, and told it in the town and in the country. And the people came to see what it was that had taken place.
15 And they came to Jesus and looked intently and searchingly at the man who had been a demoniac, sitting there, clothed and in his right mind, the same man who had had the legion of demons; and they were seized with alarm and struck with fear.
16 And those who had seen it related in full what had happened to the man possessed by demons and to the hogs.
17 And they began to beg Jesus to leave their neighborhood.
18 And when He had stepped into the boat, the man who had been controlled by the unclean spirits kept begging Him that he might be with Him.
19 But Jesus refused to permit him, but said to him, Go home to your own family and relatives and friends and bring back word to them of how much the Lord has done for you, and how He has had sympathy for you and mercy on you.
20 And he departed and began to publicly proclaim in Decapolis the region of the ten cities how much Jesus had done for him, and all the people were astonished and marveled. Matt. 4:25.
21 And when Jesus had recrossed in the boat to the other side, a great throng gathered about Him, and He was at the lakeshore.
22 Then one of the rulers of the synagogue came up, Jairus by name; and seeing Him, he prostrated himself at His feet
23 And begged Him earnestly, saying, My little daughter is at the point of death. Come and lay Your hands on her, so that she may be healed and live.
24 And Jesus went with him; and a great crowd kept following Him and pressed Him from all sides so as almost to suffocate Him.
25 And there was a woman who had had a flow of blood for twelve years,
26 And who had endured much suffering under the hands of many physicians and had spent all that she had, and was no better but instead grew worse.
27 She had heard the reports concerning Jesus, and she came up behind Him in the throng and touched His garment,
28 For she kept saying, If I only touch His garments, I shall be restored to health.
29 And immediately her flow of blood was dried up at the source, and suddenly she felt in her body that she was healed of her distressing ailment.
30 And Jesus, recognizing in Himself that the power proceeding from Him had gone forth, turned around immediately in the crowd and said, Who touched My clothes?
31 And the disciples kept saying to Him, You see the crowd pressing hard around You from all sides, and You ask, Who touched Me?
32 Still He kept looking around to see her who had done it.
33 But the woman, knowing what had been done for her, though alarmed and frightened and trembling, fell down before Him and told Him the whole truth.
34 And He said to her, Daughter, your faith (your trust and confidence in Me, springing from faith in God) has restored you to health. Go in (into) peace and be continually healed and freed from your distressing bodily disease.
35 While He was still speaking, there came some from the ruler's house, who said to Jairus, Your daughter has died. Why bother and distress the Teacher any further?
36 Overhearing but ignoring what they said, Jesus said to the ruler of the synagogue, Do not be seized with alarm and struck with fear; only keep on believing.
37 And He permitted no one to accompany Him except Peter and James and John the brother of James.
38 When they arrived at the house of the ruler of the synagogue, He looked carefully and with understanding at the tumult and the people weeping and wailing loudly.
39 And when He had gone in, He said to them, Why do you make an uproar and weep? The little girl is not dead but is sleeping.
40 And they laughed and jeered at Him. But He put them all out, and, taking the child's father and mother and those who were with Him, He went in where the little girl was lying.
41 Gripping her firmly by the hand, He said to her, Talitha cumi--which translated is, Little girl, I say to you, arise from the sleep of death!
42 And instantly the girl got up and started walking around--for she was twelve years old. And they were utterly astonished and overcome with amazement.
43 And He strictly commanded and warned them that no one should know this, and He expressly told them to give her something to eat.

2 And G2532 CONJ when he G846 P-DSM was come G1831 V-2AAP-DSM out of G1537 PREP the G3588 T-GSN ship G4143 N-GSN , immediately G2112 ADV there met G528 V-AAI-3S him G846 P-DSM out of G1537 PREP the G3588 T-GPN tombs G3419 N-GPN a man G444 N-NSM with G1722 PREP an unclean G169 A-DSN spirit G4151 N-DSN ,
3 Who G3739 R-NSM had G2192 V-IAI-3S his dwelling G2731 N-ASF among G1722 PREP the G3588 T-ASF tombs G3419 ; and G2532 CONJ no man G3762 A-NSM could G1410 V-INI-3S bind G1210 V-AAN him G846 P-ASM , no , not G3777 CONJ with chains G254 N-DPF :
4 Because that he G846 P-ASM had been often G4178 ADV bound G1210 V-RPN with fetters G3976 N-DPF and G2532 CONJ chains G254 N-DPF , and G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-APF chains G254 N-APF had been plucked asunder G1288 V-RPN by G5259 PREP him G846 P-GSM , and G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-APF fetters G3976 N-APF broken in pieces G4937 V-RPN : neither G2532 CONJ could G2480 V-IAI-3S any G3762 A-NSM man tame G1150 V-AAN him G846 P-ASM .
5 And G2532 CONJ always G1275 , night G3571 N-GSF and G2532 CONJ day G2250 N-GSF , he was G2258 V-IXI-3S in G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DPN mountains G3735 N-DPN , and G2532 CONJ in G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DPN tombs G3418 N-DPN , crying G2896 V-PAP-NSM , and G2532 CONJ cutting G2629 V-PAP-NSM himself G1438 F-3ASM with stones G3037 N-DPM .
6 But G1161 CONJ when he G3588 T-ASM saw G1492 V-2AAP-NSM Jesus G2424 N-ASM afar off G575 PREP , he ran G5143 V-2AAI-3S and G2532 CONJ worshiped G4352 V-AAI-3S him G846 P-DSM ,
7 And G2532 CONJ cried G2896 V-AAP-NSM with a loud G3173 A-DSF voice G5456 N-DSF , and said G2036 V-2AAI-3S , What have I to do with thee G5101 I-NSN , Jesus G2424 N-VSM , thou Son G5207 N-VSM of G3588 T-GSM the G3588 T-GSM most high G5310 A-GSM God G2316 N-GSM ? I adjure G3726 V-PAI-1S thee G4571 P-2AS by God G2316 N-ASM , that thou torment G928 V-AAS-2S me G3165 P-1AS not G3361 PRT-N .
8 For G1063 CONJ he said G3004 V-IAI-3S unto him G846 P-DSM , Come G1831 V-2AAM-2S out of G1537 PREP the G3588 T-GSM man G444 N-GSM , thou unclean G169 A-NSN spirit G4151 N-NSN .
9 And G2532 CONJ he asked G1905 V-IAI-3S him G846 P-ASM , What G5101 I-NSN is thy G4671 P-2DS name ? And G2532 CONJ he answered G611 V-ADI-3S , saying G3004 V-PAP-NSM , My G3427 P-1DS name G3686 N-NSN is Legion G3003 N-NSM : for G3754 CONJ we are G2070 V-PXI-1P many G4183 A-NPM .
10 And G2532 CONJ he besought G3870 V-IAI-3S him G846 P-ASM much G4183 A-APN that G2443 CONJ he would not G3361 PRT-N send them away G649 V-AAS-3S out G1854 ADV of G3588 T-GSF the G3588 T-GSF country G5561 N-GSF .
11 Now G1161 CONJ there was G2258 V-IXI-3S there G1563 ADV nigh unto G4314 PREP the G3588 T-DSN mountains G3735 N-DSN a great G3173 A-NSF herd G34 N-NSF of swine G5519 N-GPM feeding G1006 V-PPP-NSF .
12 And G2532 CONJ all G3956 A-NPM the G3588 T-NPM devils G1142 N-NPM besought G3870 V-AAI-3P him G846 P-ASM , saying G3004 V-PAP-NPM , Send G3992 V-AAM-2S us G2248 P-1AP into G1519 PREP the G3588 T-APM swine G5519 N-APM , that G2443 CONJ we may enter G1525 V-2AAS-1P into G1519 PREP them G846 P-APM .
13 And G2532 CONJ forthwith G2112 ADV Jesus G2424 N-NSM gave them leave G2010 V-AAI-3S . And G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-NPN unclean G169 A-NPN spirits G4151 N-NPN went out G1831 V-2AAP-NPN , and G2532 CONJ entered G1525 V-2AAI-3P into G1519 PREP the G3588 T-APM swine G5519 N-APM : and G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-NSF herd G34 N-NSF ran violently G3729 V-AAI-3S down G2596 PREP a steep place G2911 N-GSM into G1519 PREP the G3588 T-ASF sea G2281 N-ASF , ( CONJ they G1161 CONJ were G2258 V-IXI-3P about G5613 ADV two thousand G1367 A-NPM ; ) and G2532 CONJ were choked G4155 V-IPI-3P in G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DSF sea G2281 N-DSF .
14 And G1161 CONJ they that fed G1006 V-PAP-NPM the G3588 T-APM swine G5519 N-APM fled G5343 V-2AAI-3P , and G2532 CONJ told G312 V-AAI-3P it in G1519 PREP the G3588 T-ASF city G4172 N-ASF , and G2532 CONJ in G1519 PREP the G3588 T-APM country G68 N-APM . And G2532 CONJ they went out G1831 V-2AAI-3P to see G1492 V-2AAN what G5101 I-NSN it G3588 T-NSN was G2076 V-PXI-3S that was done G1096 V-2RAP-NSN .
15 And G2532 CONJ they come G2064 V-PNI-3P to G4314 PREP Jesus G2424 N-ASM , and G2532 CONJ see G2334 V-PAI-3P him that was possessed with the devil G1139 V-PNP-ASM , and had G2192 V-RAP-ASM the G3588 T-ASM legion G3003 N-ASM , sitting G2521 V-PNP-ASM , and G2532 CONJ clothed G2439 V-RPP-ASM , and G2532 CONJ in his right mind G4993 V-PAP-ASM : and G2532 CONJ they were afraid G5399 V-AOI-3P .
16 And G2532 CONJ they that saw G1492 V-2AAP-NPM it told G1334 V-ADI-3P them G846 P-DPM how G4459 ADV it G3588 T-DSM befell G1096 V-2ADI-3S to him that was possessed with the devil G1139 V-PNP-DSM , and G2532 CONJ also concerning G4012 PREP the G3588 T-GPM swine G5519 N-GPM .
17 And G2532 CONJ they began G756 V-ADI-3P to pray G3870 V-PAN him G846 P-ASM to depart G565 V-2AAN out of G575 PREP their G3588 T-GPN coasts G3725 N-GPN .
18 And G2532 CONJ when he G846 P-GSM was come G1684 V-2AAP-GSM into G1519 PREP the G3588 T-ASN ship G4143 N-ASN , he that had been possessed with the devil G1139 V-AOP-NSM prayed G3870 V-IAI-3S him G846 P-ASM that G2443 CONJ he might be G5600 V-PXS-3S with G3326 PREP him G846 P-GSM .
19 Howbeit G1161 CONJ Jesus G2424 N-NSM suffered G863 V-AAI-3S him G846 P-ASM not G3756 PRT-N , but G235 CONJ saith G3004 V-PAI-3S unto him G846 P-DSM , Go G5217 V-PAM-2S home to thy friends G4674 S-2APM , and G2532 CONJ tell G312 V-AAM-2S them G846 P-DPM how great things G3745 K-APN the G3588 T-NSM Lord G2962 N-NSM hath done G4160 V-RAI-3S for thee G4671 P-2DS , and G2532 CONJ hath had compassion G1653 V-AAI-3S on thee G4571 P-2AS .
20 And G2532 CONJ he departed G565 V-2AAI-3S , and G2532 CONJ began G756 V-ADI-3S to publish G2784 V-PAN in G1722 PREP Decapolis G1179 N-DSF how great things G3745 K-APN Jesus G2424 N-NSM had done G4160 V-AAI-3S for him G846 P-DSM : and G2532 CONJ all G3956 A-NPM men did marvel G2296 V-IAI-3P .
21 And G2532 CONJ when Jesus G2424 N-GSM was passed over G1276 V-AAP-GSM again G3825 ADV by G1722 PREP ship G4143 N-DSN unto G1519 PREP the G3588 T-ASN other side G4008 ADV , much G4183 A-NSM people G3793 N-NSM gathered G4863 V-API-3S unto G1909 PREP him G846 P-ASM : and G2532 CONJ he was G2258 V-IXI-3S nigh unto G3844 PREP the G3588 T-ASF sea G2281 N-ASF .
22 And G2532 CONJ , behold G2400 V-2AAM-2S , there cometh G2064 V-PNI-3S one G1520 A-NSM of G3588 T-GPM the G3588 T-GPM rulers of the synagogue G752 N-GPM , Jairus G2383 N-NSM by name G3686 N-DSN ; and G2532 CONJ when he saw G1492 V-2AAP-NSM him G846 P-ASM , he fell G4098 V-PAI-3S at G4314 PREP his G3588 T-APM feet G4228 N-APM ,
23 And G2532 CONJ besought G3870 V-IAI-3S him G846 P-ASM greatly G4183 A-APN , saying G3004 V-PAP-NSM , My G3588 T-NSN little daughter G2365 N-NSN lieth at the point of death G2079 ADV : I G2443 CONJ pray G2443 CONJ thee G2443 CONJ , come G2064 V-2AAP-NSM and lay G2007 V-2AAS-2S thy hands G5495 N-APF on her G846 P-DSF , that G3704 ADV she may be healed G4982 V-APS-3S ; and G2532 CONJ she shall live G2198 V-FDI-3S .
24 And G2532 CONJ Jesus went G565 V-2AAI-3S with G3326 PREP him G846 P-GSM ; and G2532 CONJ much G4183 A-NSM people G3793 N-NSM followed G190 V-IAI-3S him G846 P-DSM , and G2532 CONJ thronged G4918 V-IAI-3P him G846 P-ASM .
25 And G2532 CONJ a certain G5100 X-NSF woman G1135 N-NSF , which had G5607 V-PXP-NSF an G1722 PREP issue G4511 N-DSF of blood G129 N-GSN twelve G1427 A-NUI years G2094 N-NPN ,
26 And G2532 CONJ had suffered G3958 V-2AAP-NSF many things G4183 A-APN of G5259 PREP many G4183 A-GPM physicians G2395 N-GPM , and G2532 CONJ had spent G1159 V-AAP-NSF all that she had G3956 A-APN , and G2532 CONJ was nothing G3367 A-ASN bettered G5623 V-APP-NSF , but G235 CONJ rather G3123 ADV grew worse G2064 V-2AAP-NSF ,
27 When she had heard G191 V-AAP-NSF of G3588 T-GSM Jesus G2424 N-GSM , came G2064 V-2AAP-NSF in G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DSM press G3793 N-DSM behind G3693 ADV , and touched G680 V-ADI-3S his G3588 T-GSN garment G2440 N-GSN .
28 For G1063 CONJ she said G3004 V-IAI-3S , If G2579 COND-C I may touch G680 V-AMS-1S but his G3588 T-GPN clothes G2440 N-GPN , I shall be whole G4982 V-FPI-1S .
29 And G2532 CONJ straightway G2112 ADV the G3588 T-NSF fountain G4077 N-NSF of G3588 T-GSN her G3588 T-GSN blood G129 N-GSN was dried up G3583 V-API-3S ; and G2532 CONJ she G3588 T-DSN felt G1097 V-2AAI-3S in her body G4983 N-DSN that G3754 CONJ she was healed G2390 V-RPI-3S of G3588 T-GSF that plague G3148 N-GSF .
30 And G2532 CONJ Jesus G2424 N-NSM , immediately G2112 ADV knowing G1921 V-2AAP-NSM in G1722 PREP himself G1438 F-3DSM that virtue G1411 N-ASF had gone G1831 V-2AAP-ASF out of G1537 PREP him G846 P-GSM , turned him about G1994 V-2APP-NSM in G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DSM press G3793 N-DSM , and G2532 CONJ said G3004 V-IAI-3S , Who G5101 I-NSF touched G680 V-ADI-3S my G3588 T-GPN clothes G2440 N-GPN ?
31 And G2532 CONJ his G3588 T-NPM disciples G3101 N-NPM said G3004 V-IAI-3P unto him G846 P-GSM , Thou seest G991 V-PAI-2S the G3588 T-ASM multitude G3793 N-ASM thronging G4918 V-PAP-ASM thee G4571 P-2AS , and G2532 CONJ sayest G3004 V-PAI-2S thou , Who G5101 I-NSF touched G680 V-ADI-3S me G3450 P-1GS ?
32 And G2532 CONJ he looked round about G4017 V-IMI-3S to see G1492 V-2AAN her G3588 T-ASF that G3588 T-ASF had done G4160 V-AAP-ASF this thing G5124 D-ASN .
33 But G1161 CONJ the G3588 T-NSF woman G1135 N-NSF fearing G5399 V-AOP-NSF and G2532 CONJ trembling G5141 V-PAP-NSF , knowing G1492 V-RAP-NSF what G3739 R-NSN was done G1096 V-2RAI-3S in G1909 PREP her G846 P-DSF , came G2064 V-2AAI-3S and G2532 CONJ fell down before G4363 V-2AAI-3S him G846 P-DSM , and G2532 CONJ told G2036 V-2AAI-3S him G846 P-DSM all G3956 A-ASF the G3588 T-ASF truth G225 N-ASF .
34 And G1161 CONJ he G3588 T-NSM said G2036 V-2AAI-3S unto her G846 P-DSF , Daughter G2364 N-VSF , thy G3588 T-NSF faith G4102 N-NSF hath made thee whole G4982 V-RAI-3S ; go G5217 V-PAM-2S in G1519 PREP peace G1515 N-ASF , and G2532 CONJ be G2468 V-PXM-2S whole G5199 A-NSF of G575 PREP thy G3588 T-GSF plague G3148 N-GSF .
35 While he G846 P-GSM yet G2089 ADV spake G2980 V-PAP-GSM , there came G2064 V-PNI-3P from G575 PREP the G3588 T-GSM ruler of the synagogue G752 N-GSM \'s house certain which said G3004 V-PAP-NPM , Thy G3588 T-NSF daughter G2364 N-NSF is dead G599 V-2AAI-3S : why G5101 I-ASN troublest G4660 V-PAI-2S thou the G3588 T-ASM Master G1320 N-ASM any further G2089 ADV ?
36 As soon as G2112 ADV Jesus G2424 N-NSM heard G191 V-AAP-NSM the G3588 T-ASM word G3056 N-ASM that was spoken G2980 V-PPP-ASM , he saith G3004 V-PAI-3S unto the G3588 T-DSM ruler of the synagogue G752 N-DSM , Be not afraid G5399 V-PNM-2S , only G3440 ADV believe G4100 V-PAM-2S .
37 And G2532 CONJ he suffered G863 V-AAI-3S no man G3762 A-ASM to follow G4870 V-AAN him G846 P-DSM , save G1508 Peter G4074 N-ASM , and G2532 CONJ James G2385 N-ASM , and G2532 CONJ John G2491 N-ASM the G3588 T-ASM brother G80 N-ASM of James G2385 N-GSM .
38 And G2532 CONJ he cometh G2064 V-PNI-3S to G1519 PREP the G3588 T-ASM house G3624 N-ASM of G3588 T-GSM the G3588 T-GSM ruler of the synagogue G752 N-GSM , and G2532 CONJ seeth G2334 V-PAI-3S the tumult G2351 N-ASM , and them that wept G2799 V-PAP-APM and G2532 CONJ wailed G214 V-PAP-APM greatly G4183 A-APN .
39 And G2532 CONJ when he was come in G1525 V-2AAP-NSM , he saith G3004 V-PAI-3S unto them G846 P-DPM , Why G5101 I-ASN make ye this ado G2350 V-PPI-2P , and G2532 CONJ weep G2799 V-PAI-2P ? the G3588 T-NSN damsel G3813 N-NSN is not dead G599 V-2AAI-3S , but G235 CONJ sleepeth G2518 V-PAI-3S .
40 And G2532 CONJ they G3588 T-NSM laughed him G3588 T-NSM to scorn G2606 V-IAI-3P . But G1161 CONJ when he G3588 T-NSM had put them all out G1544 V-2AAP-NSM , he taketh G3880 V-PAI-3S the G3588 T-ASM father G3962 N-ASM and G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-ASF mother G3384 N-ASF of G3588 T-GSN the G3588 T-GSN damsel G3813 N-GSN , and G2532 CONJ them G3588 T-APM that were with G3326 PREP him G846 P-GSM , and G2532 CONJ entereth in G1531 V-PNI-3S where G3699 ADV the G3588 T-NSN damsel G3813 N-NSN was G2258 V-IXI-3S lying G345 V-PNP-NSN .
41 And G2532 CONJ he took G2902 V-AAP-NSM the G3588 T-GSN damsel G3813 N-GSN by the G3588 T-GSF hand G5495 N-GSF , and said G3004 V-PAI-3S unto her G846 P-DSF , Talitha G5008 ARAM cumi G2891 ARAM ; which G3739 R-NSN is G2076 V-PXI-3S , being interpreted G3177 V-PPP-NSN , Damsel G2877 N-NSN , I say G3004 V-PAI-1S unto thee G4671 P-2DS , arise G1453 V-AMM-2S .
42 And G2532 CONJ straightway G2112 ADV the G3588 T-NSN damsel G2877 N-NSN arose G450 V-2AAI-3S , and G2532 CONJ walked G4043 V-IAI-3S ; for G1063 CONJ she was G2258 V-IXI-3S of the age of twelve G1427 A-NUI years G2094 N-GPN . And they were astonished G1839 V-2AAI-3P with a great G3173 A-DSF astonishment G1611 N-DSF .
43 And G2532 CONJ he charged G1291 V-AMI-3S them G846 P-DPM straitly G4183 A-APN that G2443 CONJ no man G3367 A-NSM should know G1097 V-2AAS-3S it G5124 D-ASN ; and G2532 CONJ commanded G2036 V-2AAI-3S that something should be given G1325 V-APN her G846 P-DSF to eat G5315 V-2AAN .
