Numbers 22:1 (AMP) Amplified Bibles

1 THE ISRAELITES journeyed and encamped in the plains of Moab, on the east side of the Jordan River at Jericho.
2 And Balak the king of Moab son of Zippor saw all that Israel had done to the Amorites.
3 And Moab was terrified at the people and full of dread, because they were many. Moab was distressed and overcome with fear because of the Israelites.
4 And Moab said to the elders of Midian, Now will this multitude lick up all that is round about us, as the ox licks up the grass of the field. So Balak son of Zippor, the king of the Moabites at that time,
5 Sent messengers to Balaam a foreteller of events son of Beor at Pethor, which is by the Euphrates River, even to the land of the children of his people, to say to him, There is a people come out from Egypt; behold, they cover the face of the earth and they have settled down and dwell opposite me.
6 Now come, I beg of you, curse this people for me, for they are too powerful for me. Perhaps I may be able to defeat them and drive them out of the land, for I know that he whom you bless is blessed, and he whom you curse is cursed.
7 And the elders of Moab and of Midian departed with the rewards of foretelling in their hands; and they came to Balaam and told him the words of Balak.
8 And he said to them, Lodge here tonight and I will bring you word as the Lord may speak to me. And the princes of Moab abode with Balaam that night.
9 And God came to Balaam, and said, What men are these with you?
10 And Balaam said to God, Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab, has sent to me, saying,
11 Behold, the people who came out of Egypt cover the face of the earth; come now, curse them for me. Perhaps I shall be able to fight against them and drive them out.
12 And God said to Balaam, You shall not go with them; you shall not curse the people, for they are blessed.
13 And Balaam rose up in the morning, and said to the princes of Balak, Go back to your own land, for the Lord refuses to permit me to go with you.
14 So the princes of Moab rose up and went to Balak, and said, Balaam refuses to come with us.
15 Then Balak again sent princes, more of them and more honorable than the first ones.
16 And they came to Balaam, and said to him, Thus says Balak son of Zippor, I beg of you, let nothing hinder you from coming to me.
17 For I will promote you to very great honor and I will do whatever you tell me; so come, I beg of you, curse this people for me.
18 And Balaam answered the servants of Balak, If Balak would give me his house full of silver and gold, I cannot go beyond the word of the Lord my God, to do less or more.
19 Now therefore, I pray you, tarry here again tonight that I may know what more the Lord will say to me.
20 And God came to Balaam at night, and said to him, If the men come to call you, rise up and go with them, but still only what I tell you may you do.
21 And Balaam rose up in the morning and saddled his donkey and went with the princes of Moab.
22 And God's anger was kindled because he went, and the Angel of the Lord stood in the way as an adversary against him. Now he was riding upon his donkey, and his two servants were with him.
23 And the donkey saw the Angel of the Lord standing in the way and His sword drawn in His hand, and the donkey turned aside out of the way and went into the field. And Balaam struck the donkey to turn her into the way.
24 But the Angel of the Lord stood in a path of the vineyards, a wall on this side and a wall on that side.
25 And when the donkey saw the Angel of the Lord, she thrust herself against the wall and crushed Balaam's foot against it, and he struck her again.
26 And the Angel of the Lord went further and stood in a narrow place where there was no room to turn, either to the right hand or to the left.
27 And when the donkey saw the Angel of the Lord, she fell down under Balaam, and Balaam's anger was kindled and he struck the donkey with his staff.
28 And the Lord opened the mouth of the donkey, and she said to Balaam, What have I done to you that you should strike me these three times?
29 And Balaam said to the donkey, Because you have ridiculed and provoked me! I wish there were a sword in my hand, for now I would kill you!
30 And the donkey said to Balaam, Am not I your donkey, upon which you have ridden all your life long until this day? Was I ever accustomed to do so to you? And he said, No.
31 Then the Lord opened Balaam's eyes, and he saw the Angel of the Lord standing in the way with His sword drawn in His hand; and he bowed his head and fell on his face.
32 And the Angel of the Lord said to him, Why have you struck your donkey these three times? See, I came out to stand against and resist you, for your behavior is willfully obstinate and contrary before Me.
33 And the ass saw Me and turned from Me these three times. If she had not turned from Me, surely I would have slain you and saved her alive.
34 Balaam said to the Angel of the Lord, I have sinned, for I did not know You stood in the way against me. But now, if my going displeases You, I will return.
35 The Angel of the Lord said to Balaam, Go with the men, but you shall speak only what I tell you. So Balaam went with the princes of Balak.
36 When Balak heard that Balaam had come, he went out to meet him at the city of Moab on the border formed by the Arnon River, at the farthest end of the boundary.
37 Balak said to Balaam, Did I not earnestly send to you to ask you to come to me? Why did you not come? Am not I able to promote you to honor?
38 And Balaam said to Balak, Indeed I have come to you, but do I now have any power at all to say anything? The word that God puts in my mouth, that shall I speak.
39 And Balaam went with Balak, and they came to Kiriath-huzoth.
40 And Balak offered oxen and sheep, and sent portions to Balaam and to the princes who were with him.
41 And on the following day Balak took Balaam and brought him up into the high places of Bamoth-baal; from there he saw the nearest of the Israelites.
1 And the children H1121 of Israel H3478 set forward H5265 , and pitched H2583 in the plains H6160 of Moab H4124 on this side H5676 M-CMS Jordan H3383 by Jericho H3405 .
2 And Balak H1111 the son H1121 of Zippor H6834 saw H7200 W-VIY3MS all H3605 NMS that H834 RPRO Israel H3478 had done H6213 VQQ3MS to the Amorites H567 .
3 And Moab H4124 was sore afraid H1481 of M-CMP the people H5971 , because H3588 CONJ they H1931 PPRO-3MS were many H7227 AMS : and Moab H4124 was distressed H6973 because H6440 M-CMP of the children H1121 of Israel H3478 LMS .
4 And Moab H4124 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP the elders H2205 of Midian H4080 , Now H6258 ADV shall this company H6951 lick up H3897 all H3605 NMS that are round about H5439 us , as the ox H7794 licketh up H3897 the grass H3418 NMS of the field H7704 D-NMS . And Balak H1111 the son H1121 of Zippor H6834 was king H4428 NMS of the Moabites H4124 at that H1931 time H6256 .
5 He sent H7971 W-VQY3MS messengers H4397 therefore unto H413 PREP Balaam H1109 the son H1121 of Beor H1160 to Pethor H6604 , which H834 RPRO is by H5921 PREP the river H5104 D-NMS of the land H776 GFS of the children H1121 of his people H5971 , to call H7121 him , saying H559 L-VQFC , Behold H2009 IJEC , there is a people H5971 NMS come out H3318 VQQ3MS from Egypt H4714 M-TFS : behold H2009 IJEC , they cover H3680 VPQ3MS the face H5869 CMS of the earth H776 D-GFS , and they H1931 W-PPRO-3MS abide H3427 VQPMS over against H4136 me :
6 Come H1980 VQI2MS-3FS now H6258 W-ADV therefore , I pray thee H4994 IJEC , curse H779 me this H2088 D-PMS people H5971 ; for H3588 CONJ they H1931 PPRO-3MS are too mighty for me : peradventure H194 ADV I shall prevail H3201 , that we may smite H5221 them , and that I may drive them out H1644 of H4480 PREP the land H776 D-GFS : for H3588 CONJ I know H3045 VQY1MS that he whom H834 RPRO thou blessest H1288 is blessed H1288 , and he whom H834 RPRO thou cursest H779 is cursed H779 .
7 And the elders H2205 of Moab H4124 and the elders H2205 of Midian H4080 departed H1980 W-VQY3MP with the rewards of divination H7081 in their hand H3027 ; and they came H935 W-VQY3MP unto H413 PREP Balaam H1109 , and spoke H1696 W-VPY3MP unto H413 PREP-3MS him the words H1697 CMP of Balak H1111 .
8 And he said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP-3MP them , Lodge H3885 here H6311 this night H3915 D-AMS , and I will bring H7725 you word H1697 VQPMS again , as H834 K-RPRO the LORD H3068 EDS shall speak H1696 VPY3MS unto H413 me : and the princes H8269 of Moab H4124 abode H3427 W-VQY3MP with H5973 PREP Balaam H1109 .
9 And God H430 EDP came H935 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP Balaam H1109 , and said H559 W-VQY3MS , What H4310 IPRO men H376 are these H428 D-DPRO-3MP with H5973 PREP-2FS thee ?
10 And Balaam H1109 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP God H430 D-EDP , Balak H1111 the son H1121 of Zippor H6834 , king H4428 NMS of Moab H4124 , hath sent H7971 VQQ3MS unto H413 PREP me , saying ,
11 Behold H2009 IJEC , there is a people H5971 come out H3318 of Egypt H4714 M-TFS , which covereth H3680 W-VQY3MS the face H5869 CMS of the earth H776 D-GFS : come H1980 VQI2MS-3FS now H6258 ADV , curse H6895 me them ; peradventure H194 ADV I shall be able H3201 to overcome H3898 them , and drive them out H1644 .
12 And God H430 EDP said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP Balaam H1109 , Thou shalt not H3808 NADV go H1980 VQY2MS with H5973 PREP-3MP them ; thou shalt not H3808 NADV curse H779 the people H5971 : for H3588 CONJ they H1931 PPRO-3MS are blessed H1288 .
13 And Balaam H1109 rose up H6965 W-VQY3MS in the morning H1242 B-NMS , and said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP the princes H8269 CMP of Balak H1111 , Get H1980 VQI2MP you into H413 PREP your land H776 : for H3588 CONJ the LORD H3068 EDS refuseth H3985 to give me leave H5414 to go H1980 L-VQFC with H5973 you .
14 And the princes H8269 CMP of Moab H4124 rose up H6965 , and they went H935 W-VQY3MP unto H413 PREP Balak H1111 , and said H559 W-VQY3MP , Balaam H1109 refuseth H3985 to come H1980 with H5973 us .
15 And Balak H1111 sent H7971 yet H5750 ADV again H3254 W-VHPMS princes H8269 NMP , more H7227 AMP , and more honorable H3513 than they H428 .
16 And they came H935 W-VQY3MP to H413 PREP Balaam H1109 , and said H559 W-VQY3MP to him , Thus H3541 saith H559 VQQ3MS Balak H1111 the son H1121 of Zippor H6834 , Let nothing H408 NPAR , I pray thee H4994 IJEC , hinder H4513 thee from coming H1980 unto H413 PREP me :
17 For H3588 CONJ I will promote thee unto very great honor H3513 , and I will do H6213 VQY1MS whatsoever H3605 W-CMS thou sayest H559 unto H413 PREP-1MS me : come H1980 therefore , I pray thee H4994 IJEC , curse H6895 me this H2088 D-PMS people H5971 .
18 And Balaam H1109 answered H6030 W-VQY3MS and said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP the servants H5650 of Balak H1111 , If H518 PART Balak H1111 would give H5414 VQY3MS me his house H1004 CMS-3MS full H4393 of silver H3701 NMS and gold H2091 , I cannot H3201 go beyond H5674 the word H6310 of the LORD H3068 EDS my God H430 , to do H6213 L-VQFC less H6996 or H176 CONJ more H1419 AFS .
19 Now H6258 W-ADV therefore , I pray you H4994 IJEC , tarry H3427 ye H859 PPRO-2MS also H1571 CONJ here H2088 this night H3915 AMS , that I may know H3045 what H4100 IPRO the LORD H3068 EDS will say H1696 VPFC unto H5973 PREP-1MS me more H3254 .
20 And God H430 EDP came H935 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP Balaam H1109 at night H3915 GMS , and said H559 W-VQY3MS unto him , If H518 PART the men H376 D-NMP come H935 VQQ3MP to call H7121 thee , rise up H6965 VQI2MS , and go H1980 VQI2MS with H854 PREP-3MP them ; but yet H389 W-ADV the word H1697 D-NMS which H834 RPRO I shall say H1696 VPY1MS unto H413 PREP thee , that shalt thou do H6213 .
21 And Balaam H1109 rose up H6965 W-VQY3MS in the morning H1242 B-NMS , and saddled H2280 his ass H860 , and went H1980 W-VQY3MS with H5973 PREP the princes H8269 CMP of Moab H4124 .
22 And God H430 EDP \'s anger H639 CMS was kindled H2734 because H3588 CONJ he H1931 PPRO-3MS went H1980 VQPMS : and the angel H4397 of the LORD H3068 EDS stood H3320 in the way H1870 for an adversary H7854 against him . Now he H1931 W-PPRO-3MS was riding H7392 upon H5921 PREP his ass H860 , and his two H8147 servants H5288 were with H5973 PREP-3MS him .
23 And the ass H860 saw H7200 W-VQQ3FS the angel H4397 of the LORD H3068 EDS standing H5324 in the way H1870 , and his sword H2719 drawn H8025 in his hand H3027 B-CFS-3MS : and the ass H860 turned aside H5186 out of H4480 PREP the way H1870 D-NMS , and went H1980 W-VQQ3FS into the field H7704 B-NMS : and Balaam H1109 smote H5221 W-VHY3MS the ass H860 , to turn H5186 her into the way H1870 .
24 But the angel H4397 of the LORD H3068 EDS stood H5975 in a path H4934 of the vineyards H3754 , a wall H1447 being on this side H2088 M-DPRO , and a wall H1447 on that side H2088 .
25 And when the ass H860 saw H7200 W-VQQ3FS the angel H4397 of the LORD H3068 EDS , she thrust herself H3905 unto H413 PREP the wall H7023 , and crushed H3905 Balaam H1109 \'s foot H7272 NFS against H413 PREP the wall H7023 : and he smote H5221 her again H3254 W-VHPMS .
26 And the angel H4397 of the LORD H3068 EDS went H5674 further H3254 , and stood H5975 in a narrow H6862 NMS place H4725 , where H834 RPRO was no H369 ADV way H1870 NMS to turn H5186 either to the right hand H3225 NFS or to the left H8040 .
27 And when the ass H860 saw H7200 W-VQQ3FS the angel H4397 of the LORD H3068 EDS , she fell down H7257 under H8478 NMS Balaam H1109 : and Balaam H1109 \'s anger H639 CMS was kindled H2734 , and he smote H5221 W-VHY3MS the ass H860 with a staff H4731 .
28 And the LORD H3068 EDS opened H6605 W-VQY3MS the mouth H6310 of the ass H860 , and she said H559 W-VQY3FS unto Balaam H1109 , What H4100 IPRO have I done H6213 unto thee , that H3588 CONJ thou hast smitten H5221 me these H2088 DPRO three H7969 MFS times H7272 ?
29 And Balaam H1109 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto the ass H860 , Because H3588 CONJ thou hast mocked H5953 me : I would H3863 CONJ there were H3426 ADV a sword H2719 GFS in mine hand H3027 B-CFS-1MS , for H3588 CONJ now H6258 ADV would I kill H2026 thee .
30 And the ass H860 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP Balaam H1109 , Am not H3808 ADV I H595 PPRO-1MS thine ass H860 , upon H5921 PREP-1MS which H834 RPRO thou hast ridden H7392 ever since H5750 I was thine unto H5704 PREP this H2088 D-PMS day H3117 D-AMS ? was I ever wont H5532 to do H6213 L-VQFC so H3541 unto thee ? And he said H559 W-VQY3MS , Nay H3808 ADV .
31 Then the LORD H3068 EDS opened H1540 the eyes H5869 CMD of Balaam H1109 , and he saw H7200 W-VIY3MS the angel H4397 of the LORD H3068 EDS standing H5324 in the way H1870 , and his sword H2719 drawn H8025 in his hand H3027 B-CFS-3MS : and he bowed down his head H6915 , and fell flat H7812 on his face H639 .
32 And the angel H4397 of the LORD H3068 EDS said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP-3MS him , Wherefore H4100 IGAT hast thou smitten H5221 thine ass H860 these H2088 DPRO three H7969 MFS times H7272 ? behold H2009 IJEC , I H595 PPRO-1MS went out H3318 VQPFS-1MS to withstand H7854 thee , because H3588 CONJ thy way H1870 D-NMS is perverse H3399 before H5048 me :
33 And the ass H860 saw H7200 me , and turned H5186 from H6440 L-CMP me these H2088 DPRO three H7969 MFS times H7272 : unless H194 ADV she had turned H5186 from M-CMP-1MS me , surely H3588 CONJ now H6258 ADV also H1571 CONJ I had slain H2026 VQQ1MS thee , and saved her alive H2421 .
34 And Balaam H1109 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP the angel H4397 of the LORD H3068 EDS , I have sinned H2398 VQQ1MS ; for H3588 CONJ I knew H3045 VQY1MS not H3808 NADV that H3588 CONJ thou H859 PPRO-2MS stoodest H5324 in the way H1870 against H7125 me : now H6258 W-ADV therefore , if H518 PART it displease H7489 thee , I will get me back again H7725 .
35 And the angel H4397 of the LORD H3068 EDS said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP Balaam H1109 , Go H1980 VQI2MS with H5973 PREP the men H376 D-NMP : but only H657 the word H1697 D-NMS that H834 RPRO I shall speak H1696 VPY1MS unto H413 PREP thee , that thou shalt speak H1696 . So Balaam H1109 went H1980 W-VQY3MS with H5973 PREP the princes H8269 CMP of Balak H1111 .
36 And when Balak H1111 heard H8085 that H3588 CONJ Balaam H1109 was come H935 , he went out H3318 W-VQY3MS to meet H7125 L-VQFC-3MS him unto H413 PREP a city H5892 GFS of Moab H4124 , which H834 RPRO is in H5921 PREP the border H1366 CMS of Arnon H769 , which H834 RPRO is in the utmost H7097 coast H1366 .
37 And Balak H1111 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP Balaam H1109 , Did I not H3808 ADV earnestly send H7971 unto H413 PREP thee to call H7121 thee ? wherefore H4100 L-IPRO camest H1980 thou not H3808 NADV unto H413 PREP me ? am I not able H3201 indeed H552 to promote thee to honor H3513 ?
38 And Balaam H1109 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP Balak H1111 , Lo H2009 , I am come H935 unto H413 PREP thee : have I now H6258 ADV any power at all H3201 to say H1696 VPFC any thing H3972 NMS ? the word H1697 D-NMS that H834 RPRO God H430 EDP putteth H7760 VQY3MS in my mouth H6310 B-CMS , that shall I speak H1696 VPY1MS .
39 And Balaam H1109 went H1980 W-VQY3MS with H5973 PREP Balak H1111 , and they came H935 W-VQY3MP unto Kirjath H7155 - huzoth .
40 And Balak H1111 offered H2076 oxen H1241 NMS and sheep H6629 , and sent H7971 W-VPY3MS to Balaam H1109 , and to the princes H8269 that H834 RPRO were with H854 PREP-3MS him .
41 And it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS on the morrow H1242 , that Balak H1111 took H3947 W-VQY3MS Balaam H1109 , and brought him up H5927 into the high places H1116 of Baal H1168 , that thence H8033 M-ADV he might see H7200 W-VIY3MS the utmost H7097 part of the people H5971 D-NMS .
