Numbers 14:1 (AMP) Amplified Bibles

1 AND ALL the congregation cried out with a loud voice, and they wept that night.
2 All the Israelites grumbled and deplored their situation, accusing Moses and Aaron, to whom the whole congregation said, Would that we had died in Egypt! Or that we had died in this wilderness!
3 Why does the Lord bring us to this land to fall by the sword? Our wives and little ones will be a prey. Is it not better for us to return to Egypt? Acts 7:37-39.
4 And they said one to another, Let us choose a captain and return to Egypt.
5 Then Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before all the assembly of Israelites.
6 And Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh, who were among the scouts who had searched the land, rent their clothes,
7 And they said to all the company of Israelites, The land through which we passed as scouts is an exceedingly good land.
8 If the Lord delights in us, then He will bring us into this land and give it to us, a land flowing with milk and honey.
9 Only do not rebel against the Lord, neither fear the people of the land, for they are bread for us. Their defense and the shadow of protection is removed from over them, but the Lord is with us. Fear them not.
10 But all the congregation said to stone Joshua and Caleb with stones. But the glory of the Lord appeared at the Tent of Meeting before all the Israelites.
11 And the Lord said to Moses, How long will this people provoke (spurn, despise) Me? And how long will it be before they believe Me trusting in, relying on, clinging to Me, for all the signs which I have performed among them?
12 I will smite them with the pestilence and disinherit them, and will make of you Moses a nation greater and mightier than they.
13 But Moses said to the Lord, Then the Egyptians will hear of it, for You brought up this people in Your might from among them.
14 And they will tell it to the inhabitants of this land. They have heard that You, Lord, are in the midst of this people of Israel, that You, Lord, are seen face to face, and that Your cloud stands over them, and that You go before them in a pillar of cloud by day and in a pillar of fire by night.
15 Now if You kill all this people as one man, then the nations that have heard Your fame will say,
16 Because the Lord was not able to bring this people into the land which He swore to give to them, therefore He has slain them in the wilderness.
17 And now, I pray You, let the power of my Lord be great, as You have promised, saying,
18 The Lord is long-suffering and slow to anger, and abundant in mercy and loving-kindness, forgiving iniquity and transgression; but He will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, upon the third and fourth generation. Exod. 34:6, 7.
19 Pardon, I pray You, the iniquity of this people according to the greatness of Your mercy and loving-kindness, just as You have forgiven them from Egypt until now.
20 And the Lord said, I have pardoned according to your word.
21 But truly as I live and as all the earth shall be filled with the glory of the Lord, Isa. 6:3; 11:9.
22 Because all those men who have seen My glory and My miraculous signs which I performed in Egypt and in the wilderness, yet have tested and proved Me these ten times and have not heeded My voice,
23 Surely they shall not see the land which I swore to give to their fathers; nor shall any who provoked (spurned, despised) Me see it. Heb. 6:4-11.
24 But My servant Caleb, because he has a different spirit and has followed Me fully, I will bring into the land into which he went, and his descendants shall possess it.
25 Now because the Amalekites and the Canaanites dwell in the valley, tomorrow turn and go into the wilderness by way of the Red Sea.
26 And the Lord said to Moses and Aaron,
27 How long will this evil congregation murmur against Me? I have heard the complaints the Israelites murmur against Me.
28 Tell them, As I live, says the Lord, what you have said in My hearing I will do to you:
29 Your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness--of all who were numbered of you, from twenty years old and upward, who have murmured against Me, Heb. 3:17-19.
30 Surely none shall come into the land in which I swore to make you dwell, except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.
31 But your little ones whom you said would be a prey, them will I bring in and they shall know the land which you have despised and rejected.
32 But as for you, your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness.
33 And your children shall be wanderers and shepherds in the wilderness for forty years and shall suffer for your whoredoms (your infidelity to your espoused God), until your corpses are consumed in the wilderness.
34 After the number of the days in which you spied out the land of Canaan, even forty days, for each day a year shall you bear and suffer for your iniquities, even for forty years, and you shall know My displeasure the revoking of My promise and My estrangement.
35 I the Lord have spoken; surely this will I do to all this evil congregation who is gathered together against Me. In this wilderness they shall be consumed by war, disease, plagues, and here they shall die. I Cor. 10:10, 11.
36 And the men whom Moses sent to search the land, who returned and made all the congregation grumble and complain against him by bringing back a slanderous report of the land,
37 Even those men who brought the evil report of the land died by a plague before the Lord. Heb. 3:17-19; Jude 5-7.
38 But Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh, who were among the men who went to search the land, lived still.
39 Moses told the Lord's words to all the Israelites, and they mourned greatly.
40 And they rose early in the morning and went up to the top of the mountain, saying, Behold, we are here, and we intend to go up to the place which the Lord has promised, for we have sinned.
41 But Moses said, Why now do you transgress the command of the Lord to turn back by way of the Red Sea, since it will not succeed?
42 Go not up, for the Lord is not among you, that you be not struck down before your enemies.
43 For the Amalekites and the Canaanites are there before you, and you shall fall by the sword. Because you have turned away from following after the Lord, therefore the Lord will not be with you.
44 But they presumed to go up to the heights of the hill country; however, neither the ark of the covenant of the Lord nor Moses departed out of the camp.
45 Then the Amalekites came down and the Canaanites who dwelt in that hill country and smote the Israelites and beat them back, even as far as Hormah.
1 And all H3605 NMS the congregation H5712 lifted up H5375 their voice H6963 CMS-3MP , and cried H5414 ; and the people H5971 wept H1058 W-VQY3MP that H1931 night H3915 .
2 And all H3605 NMS the children H1121 of Israel H3478 murmured H3885 against H5921 PREP Moses H4872 and against H5921 PREP Aaron H175 : and the whole H3605 NMS congregation H5712 said H559 unto H413 PREP-3MS them , Would God that H3863 CONJ we had died H4191 in the land H776 B-GFS of Egypt H4714 EFS ! or H176 CONJ would God H3863 CONJ we had died H4191 in this H2088 D-PMS wilderness H4057 !
3 And wherefore H4100 hath the LORD H3068 EDS brought H935 VHPMS us unto H413 PREP this H2063 D-DFS land H776 D-GFS , to fall H5307 by the sword H2719 , that our wives H802 and our children H2945 should be H1961 VQY3MP a prey H957 ? were it not H3808 D-NPAR better H2896 AMS for us to return H7725 VQFC into Egypt H4714 ?
4 And they said H559 W-VQY3MP one H376 NMS to H413 PREP another H251 CMS-3MS , Let us make H5414 VNQ3FS a captain H7218 NMS , and let us return H7725 into Egypt H4714 .
5 Then Moses H4872 and Aaron H175 fell H5307 W-VQY3MS on H5921 PREP their faces H6440 L-CMP before H6440 L-CMP all H3605 NMS the assembly H6951 of the congregation H5712 CFS of the children H1121 of Israel H3478 LMS .
6 And Joshua H3091 the son H1121 of Nun H5126 , and Caleb H3612 the son H1121 of Jephunneh H3312 , which were of H4480 PREP them that searched H8446 the land H776 D-GFS , rent H7167 their clothes H899 :
7 And they spoke H559 W-VQY3MP unto H413 PREP all H3605 NMS the company H5712 CFS of the children H1121 of Israel H3478 , saying H559 L-VQFC , The land H776 D-GFS , which H834 RPRO we passed through H5674 to search H8446 it , is an exceeding H3966 ADV good H2896 NFS land H776 D-GFS .
8 If H518 PART the LORD H3068 EDS delight H2654 in us , then he will bring H935 us into H413 PREP this H2063 D-DFS land H776 D-GFS , and give H5414 it us ; a land H776 GFS which H834 RPRO floweth H2100 with milk H2461 NMS and honey H1706 .
9 Only H389 ADV rebel H4775 not H408 NPAR ye against the LORD H3068 , neither H408 NPAR fear H3372 ye H859 W-PPRO-2MP the people H5971 NMS of the land H776 D-GFS ; for H3588 CONJ they H1992 PPRO-3MP are bread H3899 for us : their defense H6738 is departed H5493 from them , and the LORD H3068 W-EDS is with H854 PREP-1MP us : fear H3372 them not H408 NPAR .
10 But all H3605 NMS the congregation H5712 bade H559 stone H7275 them with stones H68 . And the glory H3519 of the LORD H3068 EDS appeared H7200 in the tabernacle H168 of the congregation H4150 NMS before H413 PREP all H3605 NMS the children H1121 of Israel H3478 LMS .
11 And the LORD H3068 EDS said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP Moses H4872 , How long H5704 PREP will this H2088 D-PMS people H5971 provoke H5006 me ? and how long H5704 PREP will it be ere H3808 NADV they believe H539 VHY3MP me , for all H3605 the signs H226 which H834 RPRO I have showed H6213 VQQ1MS among H7130 B-CMS-3MS them ?
12 I will smite H5221 them with the pestilence H1698 , and disinherit H3423 them , and will make H6213 of thee a greater H1419 AMS nation H1471 L-NMS and mightier H6099 than H4480 M-PREP-3MS they .
13 And Moses H4872 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP the LORD H3068 EDS , Then the Egyptians H4714 shall hear H8085 it CONJ , ( CONJ for CONJ thou broughtest up H5927 this H2088 D-PMS people H5971 in thy might H3581 from among H7130 them ; )
14 And they will tell H559 W-VQQ3MP it to H413 PREP the inhabitants H3427 VQPMS of this H2063 D-DFS land H776 D-GFS : for they have heard H8085 VQQ3MP that H3588 CONJ thou H859 PPRO-2MS LORD H3068 EDS art among H7130 this H2088 D-PMS people H5971 , that H834 RPRO thou H859 PPRO-2MS LORD H3068 EDS art seen H7200 face H5869 NMS to face H5869 , and that thy cloud H6051 standeth H5975 over H5921 them , and that thou H859 PPRO-2MS goest H1980 before H6440 L-CMP-3MP them , by day time H3119 ADV in a pillar H5982 of a cloud H6051 NMS , and in a pillar H5982 of fire H784 CMS by night H3915 NMS .
15 Now if thou shalt kill H4191 all this H2088 D-PMS people H5971 as one H259 MMS man H376 , then the nations H1471 D-NMP which H834 RPRO have heard H8085 VQQ3MP the fame H8088 of thee will speak H559 , saying H559 L-VQFC ,
16 Because H1115 the LORD H3068 EDS was not able H3201 to bring H935 L-VHFC this H2088 D-PMS people H5971 into H413 PREP the land H776 D-GFS which H834 RPRO he swore H7650 unto them therefore he hath slain H7819 them in the wilderness H4057 .
17 And now H6258 W-ADV , I beseech thee H4994 IJEC , let the power H3581 CMS of my Lord H136 EDS be great H1431 , according as H834 K-RPRO thou hast spoken H1696 , saying H559 L-VQFC ,
18 The LORD H3068 EDS is longsuffering H750 JMS , and of great H7227 W-JMS mercy H2617 NMS , forgiving H5375 iniquity H5771 NMS and transgression H6588 , and by no means clearing H5352 the guilty , visiting H6485 the iniquity H5771 of the fathers H1 upon H5921 PREP the children H1121 NMP unto H5921 PREP the third H8029 and fourth H7256 generation .
19 Pardon H5545 , I beseech thee H4994 IJEC , the iniquity H5771 of this H2088 D-PMS people H5971 according unto the greatness H1433 of thy mercy H2617 , and as H834 thou hast forgiven H5375 this H2088 D-PMS people H5971 , from Egypt H4714 M-TFS even until H5704 W-PREP now H2008 .
20 And the LORD H3068 EDS said H559 W-VQY3MS , I have pardoned H5545 according to thy word H1697 :
21 But as truly H199 W-CONJ as I H589 PPRO-1MS live H2416 AMS , all H3605 NMS the earth H776 D-GFS shall be filled H4390 with the glory H3519 of the LORD H3068 EDS .
22 Because H3588 CONJ all H3605 CMS those men H376 which have seen H7200 my glory H3519 , and my miracles H226 , which H834 RPRO I did H6213 VQQ1MS in Egypt H4714 and in the wilderness H4057 , and have tempted H5254 me now these H2088 DPRO ten H6235 MFS times H6471 NFP , and have not H3808 W-NPAR hearkened H8085 VQQ3MP to my voice H6963 ;
23 Surely H518 PART they shall not see H7200 VQY3MP the land H776 D-GFS which H834 RPRO I swore H7650 unto their fathers H1 , neither H3808 NADV shall any H3605 W-CMS of them that provoked H5006 me see H7200 it :
24 But my servant H5650 Caleb H3612 , because H6118 he had H1961 VQP3FS another H312 spirit H7307 NFS with H5973 PREP-3MS him , and hath followed me fully H4390 , him will I bring H935 into H413 PREP the land H776 D-GFS whereinto H834 RPRO he went H935 VQPMS ; and his seed H2233 shall possess H3423 it .
25 (Now the Amalekites H6003 and the Canaanites H3669 WD-EMS dwelt H3427 VQPMS in the valley H6010 . ) Tomorrow H4279 NMS turn H6437 VQI2MP you , and get H5265 you into the wilderness H4057 D-NMS by the way H1870 NMS of the Red H5488 sea H3220 .
26 And the LORD H3068 EDS spoke H1696 W-VPY3MS unto H413 PREP Moses H4872 and unto H413 PREP Aaron H175 saying H559 L-VQFC ,
27 How long H5704 PREP shall I bear with this H2063 D-DFS evil H7451 D-AFS congregation H5712 , which H834 RPRO murmur H3885 against H5921 me ? I have heard H8085 the murmurings H8519 of the children H1121 of Israel H3478 , which H834 RPRO they H1992 PPRO-3MP murmur H3885 against H5921 PREP-1MS me .
28 Say H559 unto H413 PREP-3MS them , As truly as I H589 PPRO-1MS live H2416 AMS , saith H5002 the LORD H3068 EDS , as H834 K-RPRO ye have spoken H1696 in mine ears H241 , so H3651 ADV will I do H6213 VQY1MS to you :
29 Your carcasses H6297 shall fall H5307 in this H2088 D-PMS wilderness H4057 ; and all H3605 W-CMS that were numbered H6485 of you , according to your whole H3605 L-CMS number H4557 , from twenty H6242 years H8141 NFS old H1121 and upward H4605 , which H834 RPRO have murmured H3885 against H5921 me ,
30 Doubtless H518 PART ye H859 PPRO-2MS shall not come H935 into H413 PREP the land H776 D-GFS , concerning which H834 RPRO I swore H5375 VQQ1MS to make you dwell H7931 therein , save H518 PART Caleb H3612 the son H1121 of Jephunneh H3312 , and Joshua H3091 the son H1121 of Nun H5126 .
31 But your little ones H2945 , which H834 RPRO ye said H559 should be H1961 VQY3MS a prey H957 , them will I bring in H935 , and they shall know H3045 the land H776 D-GFS which H834 RPRO ye have despised H3988 .
32 But as for you H859 PPRO-2MS , your carcasses H6297 , they shall fall H5307 in this H2088 D-PMS wilderness H4057 .
33 And your children H1121 shall wander H7462 in the wilderness H4057 forty H705 MMP years H8141 NFS , and bear H5375 your whoredoms H2184 , until H5704 PREP your carcasses H6297 be wasted H8552 in the wilderness H4057 .
34 After the number H4557 B-CMS of the days H3117 NUM-MS in which H834 RPRO ye searched H8446 the land H776 D-GFS , even forty H705 MMP days H3117 NMS , each day for a year H3117 NMS , shall ye bear H5375 your iniquities H5771 , even forty H705 MMP years H8141 , and ye shall know H3045 my breach of promise H8569 .
35 I H589 PPRO-1MS the LORD H3068 EDS have said H1696 VPQ1MS , I will surely H518 PART do H6213 it H2063 DPRO unto all H3605 L-CMS this H2063 D-DFS evil H7451 D-AFS congregation H5712 , that are gathered together H3259 against H5921 me : in this H2088 D-PMS wilderness H4057 they shall be consumed H8552 , and there H8033 W-ADV they shall die H4191 .
36 And the men H376 , which H834 RPRO Moses H4872 sent H7971 VQQ3MS to search H8446 the land H776 D-GFS , who returned H7725 W-VUY3MP , and made all H3605 NMS the congregation H5712 to murmur H3885 against H5921 PREP-3MS him , by bringing up H3318 a slander H1681 upon H5921 PREP-3MS the land H776 D-GFS ,
37 Even those men H376 that did bring up H3318 the evil H7451 AFS report H1681 upon the land H776 D-GFS , died H4191 by the plague H4046 before H6440 L-CMP the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS .
38 But Joshua H3091 the son H1121 of Nun H5126 , and Caleb H3612 the son H1121 of Jephunneh H3312 , which were of H4480 PREP the men H376 D-NMP that went H1980 to search H8446 the land H776 D-GFS , lived H2421 still .
39 And Moses H4872 told H1696 W-VPY3MS these H428 D-DPRO-3MP sayings H1697 AMP unto H413 PREP all H3605 NMS the children H1121 of Israel H3478 : and the people H5971 mourned H56 greatly H3966 ADV .
40 And they rose up early H7925 in the morning H1242 , and got them up H5927 into H413 PREP the top H7218 NMS of the mountain H2022 , saying H559 L-VQFC , Lo H2009 , we be here , and will go up H5927 unto H413 PREP the place H4725 D-NMS which H834 RPRO the LORD H3068 EDS hath promised H559 VQQ3MS : for H3588 CONJ we have sinned H2398 .
41 And Moses H4872 said H559 W-VQY3MS , Wherefore H4100 L-IPRO now H2088 PMS do ye H859 PPRO-2MS transgress H5674 the commandment H6310 of the LORD H3068 EDS ? but it H1931 shall not H3808 NADV prosper H6743 .
42 Go not up H5927 , for H3588 CONJ the LORD H3068 EDS is not H369 NPAR among H7130 you ; that ye be not H3808 W-NPAR smitten H5062 before H6440 L-CMP your enemies H341 .
43 For H3588 CONJ the Amalekites H6003 D-TMS and the Canaanites H3669 are there H8033 ADV before H6440 you , and ye shall fall H5307 by the sword H2719 : because H5921 PREP ye are turned away H7725 from the LORD H3068 EDS , therefore the LORD H3068 EDS will not H3808 W-NPAR be H1961 VQY3MS with H5973 you .
44 But they presumed H6075 to go up H5927 L-VQFC unto H413 PREP the hill H2022 top H7218 NMS : nevertheless the ark H727 of the covenant H1285 NFS of the LORD H3068 EDS , and Moses H4872 , departed H4185 not H3808 NADV out of the camp H4264 .
45 Then the Amalekites H6003 D-TMS came down H3381 W-VQY3MS , and the Canaanites H3669 WD-EMS which dwelt H3427 D-VQPMS in that H1931 D-PPRO-3MS hill H2022 , and smote H5221 them , and discomfited H3807 them , even unto H5704 PREP Hormah H2767 .
