Amos 5:1 (AMP) Amplified Bibles

1 HEAR THIS word which I take up concerning you in lamentation, O house of Israel:
2 The Virgin of Israel has fallen; she shall no more rise; she lies cast down and forsaken on her land; there is no one to raise her up.
3 For thus says the Lord God: The city that went forth a thousand shall have a hundred left, and that which went forth a hundred shall have ten left to the house of Israel.
4 For thus says the Lord to the house of Israel: Seek Me inquire for and of Me and require Me as you require food and you shall live! II Chron. 15:2; Jer. 29:13.
5 But seek not the golden calf at Bethel nor enter into idolatrous Gilgal, and pass not over to the idols of Beersheba; for Gilgal shall surely go into captivity and exile, and Bethel house of God shall become Beth-aven house of vanity, emptiness, falsity, and futility and come to nothing.
6 Seek the Lord inquire for and of Him and require Him and you shall live, lest He rush down like fire upon the house of Joseph representing the ten tribes and devour it, and there be none to quench it in Bethel the center of their idol hopes.
7 You who turn justice into the bitterness of wormwood and cast righteousness (uprightness and right standing with God) down to the ground,
8 Seek Him Who made the cluster of stars called Pleiades and the constellation Orion, Who turns the shadow of death or deep darkness into the morning and darkens the day into night, Who calls for the waters of the sea and pours them out upon the face of the earth--the Lord is His name--
9 Who causes sudden destruction to flash forth upon the strong so that destruction comes upon the fortress.
10 They hate him who reproves in the city gate holding him as an abomination and rejecting his rebuke, and they abhor him who speaks uprightly.
11 Therefore because you tread upon the poor and take from him exactions of wheat, you have built houses of hewn stone, but you shall not dwell in them; you have planted pleasant vineyards, but you shall not drink their wine.
12 For I know how manifold are your transgressions and how mighty are your sins--you who afflict the uncompromisingly righteous, who take a bribe, and who turn aside the needy in the court of the city gate from their right.
13 Therefore he who is prudent will keep silence in such a time, for it is an evil time.
14 Seek (inquire for and require) good and not evil that you may live, and so the Lord, the God of hosts, will be with you, as you have said.
15 Hate the evil and love the good and establish justice in the court of the city's gate. It may be that the Lord, the God of hosts, will be gracious to the remnant of Joseph the northern kingdom.
16 Therefore thus says the Lord, the God of hosts, the Lord: There shall be wailing in all the broad ways, and in all the streets they shall say, Alas! Alas! And they shall call the farmers to mourning and such as are skilled in lamentation to wailing.
17 And in all vineyards there shall be wailing, for I will pass through the midst of you, says the Lord.
18 Woe to you who desire the day of the Lord! Why would you want the day of the Lord? It is darkness and not light;
19 It is as if a man fled from a lion and a bear met him, or went into the house and leaned with his hand against the wall and a serpent bit him.
20 Shall not the day of the Lord be darkness, not light? Even very dark with no brightness in it?
21 I hate, I despise your feasts, and I will not smell a savor or take delight in your solemn assemblies.
22 Though you offer Me your burnt offerings and your cereal offerings, I will not accept them, neither will I look upon the peace or thank offerings of your fatted beasts.
23 Take away from Me the noise of your songs, for I will not listen to the melody of your harps.
24 But let justice run down like waters and righteousness as a mighty and ever-flowing stream.
25 Did you bring to Me sacrifices and cereal offerings during those forty years in the wilderness, O house of Israel?
26 No but instead of bringing Me the appointed sacrifices you carried about the tent of your king Sakkuth and Kaiwan names for the gods of the planet Saturn, your images of your star-god which you made for yourselves and you will do so again.
27 Therefore I will cause you to go into exile beyond Damascus, says the Lord, whose name is the God of hosts. Acts 7:42, 43.

2 The virgin H1330 of Israel H3478 is fallen H5307 VQQ3FS ; she shall no H3808 ADV more H3254 VHY3FS rise H6965 VQI2MS : she is forsaken H5203 upon H5921 PREP her land H127 ; there is none H369 NPAR to raise her up H6965 .
3 For H3588 CONJ thus H3541 saith H559 VQQ3MS the Lord H136 EDS GOD H3069 ; The city H5892 D-GFS that went out H3318 by a thousand H505 W-BMS shall leave H7604 a hundred H3967 MFS , and that which went forth H3318 by a hundred H3967 MFS shall leave H7604 ten H6235 , to the house H1004 of Israel H3478 LMS .
4 For H3588 CONJ thus H3541 saith H559 VQQ3MS the LORD H3068 EDS unto the house H1004 of Israel H3478 , Seek H1875 ye me , and ye shall live H2421 :
5 But seek H1875 not H408 Bethel H1008 LFS , nor H3808 NADV enter H935 into Gilgal H1537 , and pass H5674 not H3808 NADV to Beer H884 - sheba : for H3588 CONJ Gilgal H1537 shall surely go into captivity H1540 , and Bethel H1008 LFS shall come H1961 VQY3MS to naught H205 .
6 Seek H1875 the LORD H3068 EDS , and ye shall live H2421 W-VQI2MP ; lest H6435 CONJ he break out H6743 like fire H784 in the house H1004 CMS of Joseph H3130 , and devour H398 it , and there be none H369 W-NPAR to quench H3518 it in Bethel H1008 LFS .
7 Ye who turn H2015 judgment H4941 NMS to wormwood H3939 , and leave off H5117 righteousness H6666 in the earth H776 LD-NFS ,
8 Seek him that maketh H6213 the seven stars H3598 and Orion H3685 , and turneth H2015 the shadow of death H6757 NMS into the morning H1242 , and maketh the day dark H2821 with night H3915 GMS : that calleth H7121 for the waters H4325 of the sea H3220 D-NMS , and poureth them out H8210 upon H5921 PREP the face H6440 CMP of the earth H776 D-GFS : The LORD H3068 EDS is his name H8034 CMS-3MS :
9 That strengtheneth H1082 the spoiled H7701 against H5921 PREP the strong H5974 , so that the spoiled H7701 shall come H935 VQY3MS against H5921 PREP the fortress H4013 .
10 They hate H8130 VQQ3MP him that rebuketh H3198 VHPMS in the gate H8179 BD-NMS , and they abhor H8581 him that speaketh H1696 uprightly H8549 AMS .
11 Forasmuch H3282 ADV therefore H3651 L-ADV as your treading H1318 is upon H5921 PREP the poor H1800 CMS , and ye take H3947 from H4480 M-PREP-3MS him burdens H4864 of wheat H1250 : ye have built H1129 houses H1004 of hewn stone H1496 , but ye shall not H3808 W-NPAR dwell H3427 in them ; ye have planted H5193 pleasant H2531 vineyards H3754 , but ye shall not H3808 W-NPAR drink H8354 wine H3196 of them .
12 For H3588 CONJ I know H3045 VQY1MS your manifold H7227 AMP transgressions H6588 and your mighty H6099 sins H2403 : they afflict H6887 the just H6662 AMS , they take H3947 a bribe H3724 , and they turn aside H5186 the poor H34 in the gate H8179 from their right .
13 Therefore H3651 L-ADV the prudent H7919 shall keep silence H1826 in that H1931 time H6256 ; for H3588 CONJ it H1931 is an evil H7451 AFS time H6256 NMS .
14 Seek H1875 good H2896 AMS , and not H408 W-NPAR evil H7451 AMS , that H4616 L-CONJ ye may live H2421 : and so H3651 ADV the LORD H3068 EDS , the God H430 of hosts H6635 , shall be H1961 W-VQI3MS with H854 PART-2MP you , as H834 K-RPRO ye have spoken H559 .
15 Hate H8130 the evil H7451 AMS , and love H157 the good H2896 AMS , and establish H3322 judgment H4941 NMS in the gate H8179 BD-NMS : it may be H194 ADV that the LORD H3068 EDS God H430 of hosts H6635 will be gracious H2603 unto the remnant H7611 of Joseph H3130 .
16 Therefore H3651 L-ADV the LORD H3068 EDS , the God H430 CDP of hosts H6635 , the Lord H136 EDS , saith H559 VQQ3MS thus H3541 ; Wailing H4553 shall be in all H3605 B-CMS streets H7339 ; and they shall say H559 VQY3MP in all H3605 WB-CMS the highways H2351 , Alas H1930 ! alas H1930 ! and they shall call H7121 W-VQQ3MP the husbandman H406 to H413 PREP mourning H60 , and such as are skillful H3045 of lamentation H5092 to H413 PREP wailing H4553 .
17 And in all H3605 WB-CMS vineyards H3754 shall be wailing H4553 : for H3588 CONJ I will pass H5674 through H7130 thee , saith H559 VQQ3MS the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS .
18 Woe H1945 unto you that desire H183 the day H3117 NMS of the LORD H3068 EDS ! to what end H4100 L-IPRO is it H2088 PMS for you ? the day H3117 NMS of the LORD H3068 EDS is darkness H2822 NMS , and not H3808 W-NPAR light H216 NMS .
19 As if H834 K-RPRO a man H376 NMS did flee H5127 from M-CMP a lion H738 , and a bear H1677 met H6293 him ; or went H935 into the house H1004 D-NMS , and leaned H5564 his hand H3027 CFS-3MS on H5921 PREP the wall H7023 , and a serpent H5175 bit H5391 him .
20 Shall not H3808 I-NPAR the day H3117 NMS of the LORD H3068 EDS be darkness H2822 NMS , and not H3808 W-NPAR light H216 NMS ? even very dark H651 , and no H3808 W-NPAR brightness H5051 in it ?
21 I hate H8130 , I despise H3988 VQQ1MS your feast days H2282 , and I will not H3808 W-NPAR smell H7306 in your solemn assemblies H6116 .
22 Though H518 PART ye offer H5927 me burnt offerings H5930 CFP and your meat offerings H4503 , I will not H3808 NADV accept H7521 them : neither H3808 NADV will I regard H5027 the peace offerings H8002 of your fat beasts H4806 .
23 Take thou away H5493 from M-PREP-1MS me the noise H1995 of thy songs H7892 ; for I will not H3808 NADV hear H8085 VQY1MS the melody H2172 of thy viols H5035 .
24 But let judgment H4941 NMS run down H1556 as waters H4325 , and righteousness H6666 as a mighty H386 stream H5158 .
25 Have ye offered H5066 unto me sacrifices H2077 and offerings H4503 in the wilderness H4057 forty H705 MMP years H8141 NFS , O house H1004 CMS of Israel H3478 LMS ?
26 But ye have borne H5375 the tabernacle H5522 of your Moloch H4432 and Chiun H3594 your images H6754 , the star H3556 of your god H430 , which H834 RPRO ye made H6213 to yourselves .
27 Therefore will I cause you to go into captivity H1540 beyond H1973 Damascus H1834 , saith H559 VQQ3MS the LORD H3068 EDS , whose name H8034 CMS-3MS is The God H430 of hosts H6635 .
