Mark 4 (AMP) Amplified Bibles

1 AGAIN JESUS began to teach beside the lake. And a very great crowd gathered about Him, so that He got into a ship in order to sit in it on the sea, and the whole crowd was at the lakeside on the shore.
2 And He taught them many things in parables (illustrations or comparisons put beside truths to explain them), and in His teaching He said to them:
3 Give attention to this! Behold, a sower went out to sow.
4 And as he was sowing, some seed fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up.
5 Other seed of the same kind fell on ground full of rocks, where it had not much soil; and at once it sprang up, because it had no depth of soil;
6 And when the sun came up, it was scorched, and because it had not taken root, it withered away.
7 Other seed of the same kind fell among thorn plants, and the thistles grew and pressed together and utterly choked and suffocated it, and it yielded no grain.
8 And other seed of the same kind fell into good (well-adapted) soil and brought forth grain, growing up and increasing, and yielded up to thirty times as much, and sixty times as much, and even a hundred times as much as had been sown.
9 And He said, He who has ears to hear, let him be hearing and let him consider, and comprehend.
10 And as soon as He was alone, those who were around Him, with the Twelve apostles, began to ask Him about the parables.
11 And He said to them, To you has been entrusted the mystery of the kingdom of God that is, the secret counsels of God which are hidden from the ungodly; but for those outside of our circle everything becomes a parable,
12 In order that they may indeed look and look but not see and perceive, and may hear and hear but not grasp and comprehend, lest haply they should turn again, and it their willful rejection of the truth should be forgiven them. Isa. 6:9, 10; Matt. 13:13-15.
13 And He said to them, Do you not discern and understand this parable? How then is it possible for you to discern and understand all the parables?
14 The sower sows the Word.
15 The ones along the path are those who have the Word sown in their hearts, but when they hear, Satan comes at once and by force takes away the message which is sown in them.
16 And in the same way the ones sown upon stony ground are those who, when they hear the Word, at once receive and accept and welcome it with joy;
17 And they have no real root in themselves, and so they endure for a little while; then when trouble or persecution arises on account of the Word, they immediately are offended (become displeased, indignant, resentful) and they stumble and fall away.
18 And the ones sown among the thorns are others who hear the Word;
19 Then the cares and anxieties of the world and distractions of the age, and the pleasure and delight and false glamour and deceitfulness of riches, and the craving and passionate desire for other things creep in and choke and suffocate the Word, and it becomes fruitless.
20 And those sown on the good (well-adapted) soil are the ones who hear the Word and receive and accept and welcome it and bear fruit--some thirty times as much as was sown, some sixty times as much, and some even a hundred times as much.
21 And He said to them, Is the lamp brought in to be put under a peck measure or under a bed, and not to be put on the lampstand?
22 Things are hidden temporarily only as a means to revelation. For there is nothing hidden except to be revealed, nor is anything temporarily kept secret except in order that it may be made known.
23 If any man has ears to hear, let him be listening and let him perceive and comprehend.
24 And He said to them, Be careful what you are hearing. The measure of thought and study you give to the truth you hear will be the measure of virtue and knowledge that comes back to you--and more besides will be given to you who hear.
25 For to him who has will more be given; and from him who has nothing, even what he has will be taken away by force,
26 And He said, The kingdom of God is like a man who scatters seed upon the ground,
27 And then continues sleeping and rising night and day while the seed sprouts and grows and increases--he knows not how.
28 The earth produces acting by itself--first the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear.
29 But when the grain is ripe and permits, immediately he sends forth the reapers and puts in the sickle, because the harvest stands ready.
30 And He said, With what can we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable shall we use to illustrate and explain it?
31 It is like a grain of mustard seed, which, when sown upon the ground, is the smallest of all seeds upon the earth;
32 Yet after it is sown, it grows up and becomes the greatest of all garden herbs and puts out large branches, so that the birds of the air are able to make nests and dwell in its shade.
33 With many such parables Jesus spoke the Word to them, as they were able to hear and to comprehend and understand.
34 He did not tell them anything without a parable; but privately to His disciples (those who were peculiarly His own) He explained everything fully.
35 On that same day when evening had come, He said to them, Let us go over to the other side of the lake.
36 And leaving the throng, they took Him with them, just as He was, in the boat in which He was sitting. And other boats were with Him.
37 And a furious storm of wind of hurricane proportions arose, and the waves kept beating into the boat, so that it was already becoming filled.
38 But He Himself was in the stern of the boat, asleep on the leather cushion; and they awoke Him and said to Him, Master, do You not care that we are perishing?
39 And He arose and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, Hush now! Be still (muzzled)! And the wind ceased (sank to rest as if exhausted by its beating) and there was immediately a great calm (a perfect peacefulness).
40 He said to them, Why are you so timid and fearful? How is it that you have no faith (no firmly relying trust)?
41 And they were filled with great awe and feared exceedingly and said one to another, Who then is this, that even wind and sea obey Him?

2 And G2532 CONJ he taught G1321 V-IAI-3S them G846 P-APM many things G4183 A-APN by G1722 PREP parables G3850 N-DPF , and G2532 CONJ said G3004 V-IAI-3S unto them G846 P-DPM in G1722 PREP his G3588 T-DSF doctrine G1322 N-DSF ,
3 Hearken G191 V-PAM-2P ; Behold G2400 V-2AAM-2S , there went out G1831 V-2AAI-3S a sower G4687 V-PAP-NSM to sow G4687 V-AAN :
4 And G2532 CONJ it came to pass G1096 V-2ADI-3S , as he sowed G4687 V-PAN , some G3739 R-NSN fell G4098 V-2AAI-3S by G3844 PREP the G3588 T-ASF way side G3598 N-ASF , and G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-NPN fowls G4071 N-NPN of the G3588 T-NPN air G3772 came G2064 V-2AAI-3S and G2532 CONJ devoured it up G2719 V-2AAI-3S .
5 And G1161 CONJ some G243 A-NSN fell G4098 V-2AAI-3S on G1909 PREP stony ground G4075 A-ASN , where G3699 ADV it had G2192 V-IAI-3S not G3756 PRT-N much G4183 A-ASF earth G1093 N-ASF ; and G2532 CONJ immediately G2112 ADV it sprang up G1816 V-AAI-3S , because it G3588 T-ASN had G2192 V-PAN no G3361 PRT-N depth G899 N-ASN of earth G1093 N-GSF :
6 But G1161 CONJ when the sun G2246 N-GSM was up G393 V-AAP-GSM , it was scorched G2739 V-API-3S ; and G2532 CONJ because it G3588 T-ASN had G2192 V-PAN no G3361 PRT-N root G4491 N-ASF , it withered away G3583 V-API-3S .
7 And G2532 CONJ some G243 A-NSN fell G4098 V-2AAI-3S among G1519 PREP thorns G173 N-APF , and G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-NPF thorns G173 N-NPF grew up G305 V-2AAI-3P , and G2532 CONJ choked G4846 V-AAI-3P it G846 P-ASN , and G2532 CONJ it yielded G1325 V-AAI-3S no G3756 PRT-N fruit G2590 N-ASM .
8 And G2532 CONJ other G243 A-NSN fell G4098 V-2AAI-3S on G1519 PREP good G2570 A-ASF ground G1093 N-ASF , and G2532 CONJ did yield G1325 V-IAI-3S fruit G2590 N-ASM that sprang up G305 V-PAP-ASM and G2532 CONJ increased G837 V-PAP-ASM ; and G2532 CONJ brought forth G5342 V-IAI-3S , some G1520 thirty G5144 A-NUI , and G2532 CONJ some G1520 sixty G1835 A-NUI , and G2532 CONJ some G1520 a hundred G1540 A-NUI .
9 And G2532 CONJ he said G3004 V-IAI-3S unto them G846 , He that hath G2192 V-PAP-NSM ears G3775 N-APN to hear G191 V-PAN , let him hear G191 V-PAM-3S .
10 And G1161 CONJ when G3753 ADV he was G1096 V-2ADI-3S alone G2651 ADV , they G3588 T-NPM that were about G4012 PREP him G846 P-ASM with G4862 PREP the G3588 T-DPM twelve G1427 A-NUI asked G2065 V-AAI-3P of him G846 P-ASM the G3588 T-ASF parable G3850 N-ASF .
11 And G2532 CONJ he said G3004 V-IAI-3S unto them G846 P-DPM , Unto you G5213 P-2DP it is given G1325 V-RPI-3S to know G1097 V-2AAN the G3588 T-ASN mystery G3466 N-ASN of G3588 T-GSF the G3588 T-GSF kingdom G932 N-GSF of God G2316 N-GSM : but G1161 CONJ unto them G1565 D-DPM that G3588 T-DPM are without G1854 ADV , all these things G3956 A-NPN are done G1096 V-PNI-3S in G1722 PREP parables G3850 N-DPF :
12 That G2443 CONJ seeing G991 V-PAP-NPM they may see G991 V-PAS-3P , and G2532 CONJ not G3361 PRT-N perceive G1492 V-2AAS-3P ; and G2532 CONJ hearing G191 V-PAP-NPM they may hear G191 V-PAS-3P , and G2532 CONJ not G3361 PRT-N understand G4920 V-PAS-3P ; lest at any time G3379 ADV they should be converted G1994 V-AAS-3P , and G2532 CONJ their sins G265 N-NPN should be forgiven G863 V-APS-3S them G846 P-DPM .
13 And G2532 CONJ he said G3004 V-PAI-3S unto them G846 P-DPM , Know G1492 V-RAI-2P ye not G3756 PRT-N this G3588 T-ASF parable G3850 N-ASF ? and G2532 CONJ how G4459 ADV-I then will ye know G1097 V-FDI-2P all G3956 A-APF parables G3850 N-APF ?
14 The G3588 T-NSM sower G4687 V-PAP-NSM soweth G4687 V-PAI-3S the G3588 T-ASM word G3056 N-ASM .
15 And G1161 CONJ these G3778 D-NPM are G1526 V-PXI-3P they G3588 T-NPM by G3844 PREP the G3588 T-ASF way side G3598 N-ASF , where G3699 ADV the G3588 T-NSM word G3056 N-NSM is sown G4687 V-PPI-3S ; but G2532 CONJ when G3752 CONJ they have heard G191 V-AAS-3P , Satan G4567 N-NSM cometh G2064 V-PNI-3S immediately G2112 ADV , and G2532 CONJ taketh away G142 V-PAI-3S the G3588 T-ASM word G3056 N-ASM that was sown G4687 V-RPP-ASM in G1722 PREP their G3588 T-DPF hearts G2588 N-DPF .
16 And G2532 CONJ these G3778 D-NPM are G1526 V-PXI-3P they G3588 T-NPM likewise which G3588 T-NPM are sown G4687 V-PPP-NPM on G1909 PREP stony ground G4075 A-APN ; who G3739 R-NPM , when G3752 CONJ they have heard G191 V-AAS-3P the G3588 T-ASM word G3056 N-ASM , immediately G2112 ADV receive G2983 V-PAI-3P it G846 P-ASM with G3326 PREP gladness G5479 N-GSF ;
17 And G2532 CONJ have G2192 V-PAI-3P no G3756 PRT-N root G4491 N-ASF in G1722 PREP themselves G1438 F-3DPM , and G235 CONJ so G1526 V-PXI-3P endure but for a time G4340 A-NPM : afterward G1534 ADV , when affliction G2347 N-GSF or G2228 PRT persecution G1375 N-GSM ariseth G1096 V-2ADP-GSF for the word\'s sake G1223 PREP , immediately G2112 ADV they are offended G4624 V-PPI-3P .
18 And G2532 CONJ these G3778 D-NPM are G1526 V-PXI-3P they G3588 T-NPM which G3588 T-NPM are sown G4687 V-PPP-NPM among G1519 PREP thorns G173 N-APF ; such as hear G191 V-PAP-NPM the G3588 T-ASM word G3056 N-ASM ,
19 And G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-NPF cares G3308 N-NPF of G3588 T-GSM this G3588 T-GSM world G165 N-GSM , and G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-NSF deceitfulness G539 N-NSF of riches G4149 N-GSM , and G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-NSF lusts G1939 N-NPF of G3588 T-APN other things G3062 A-APN entering in G1531 V-PNP-NPF , choke G4846 V-PAI-3P the G3588 T-ASM word G3056 N-ASM , and G2532 CONJ it becometh G1096 V-PNI-3S unfruitful G175 A-NSM .
20 And G2532 CONJ these G3778 D-NPM are G1526 V-PXI-3P they G3588 T-NPM which G3588 T-NPM are sown G4687 V-2APP-NPM on G1909 PREP good G2570 A-ASF ground G1093 N-ASF ; such as G3748 R-NPM hear G191 V-PAI-3P the G3588 T-ASM word G3056 N-ASM , and G2532 CONJ receive G3858 V-PNI-3P it , and G2532 CONJ bring forth fruit G2592 V-PAI-3P , some G1520 thirtyfold G5144 A-NUI , some G1520 sixty G1835 A-NUI , and G2532 CONJ some G1520 a hundred G1540 A-NUI .
21 And G2532 CONJ he said G3004 V-IAI-3S unto them G846 P-DPM , Is a G3385 PRT-I candle G3088 N-NSM brought G2064 V-PNI-3S to G2443 CONJ be put G5087 V-APS-3S under G5259 PREP a bushel G3426 N-ASM , or G2228 PRT under G5259 PREP a bed G2825 N-ASF ? and not G3756 PRT-N to G2443 CONJ be set G2007 V-APS-3S on G1909 PREP a candlestick G3087 N-ASF ?
22 For G1063 CONJ there is G2076 V-PXI-3S nothing G3756 PRT-N hid G2927 A-NSN , which G3739 R-NSN shall not G3362 be manifested G5319 V-APS-3S ; neither G3761 ADV was G1096 V-2ADI-3S any thing kept secret G614 A-NSN , but G235 CONJ that G2443 CONJ it should come G2064 V-2AAS-3S abroad G1519 PREP .
23 If any man G1536 have G2192 V-PAI-3S ears G3775 N-APN to hear G191 V-PAN , let him hear G191 V-PAM-3S .
24 And G2532 CONJ he said G3004 V-IAI-3S unto them G846 P-DPM , Take heed G991 V-PAM-2P what G5101 I-ASN ye hear G191 V-PAI-2P : with G1722 PREP what G3739 R-DSN measure G3358 N-DSN ye mete G3354 V-PAI-2P , it shall be measured G3354 V-FPI-3S to you G5213 P-2DP : and G2532 CONJ unto you G3588 T-DPM that hear G191 V-PAP-DPM shall more be given G4369 V-FPI-3S .
25 For G1063 CONJ he R-NSM that hath G2192 V-PAS-3S , to him G846 P-DSM shall be given G1325 V-FPI-3S : and G2532 CONJ he G3739 R-NSM that hath G2192 V-PAI-3S not G3756 PRT-N , from G575 PREP him G846 P-GSM shall be taken G142 V-FPI-3S even G2532 CONJ that which G3739 R-NSM he hath G2192 V-PAI-3S .
26 And G2532 CONJ he said G3004 V-IAI-3S , So G3779 ADV is G2076 V-PXI-3S the G3588 T-NSF kingdom G932 N-NSF of God G2316 N-GSM , as G5613 ADV if G1437 COND a man G444 N-NSM should cast G906 V-2AAS-3S seed G4703 N-ASM into G1909 PREP the G3588 T-GSF ground G1093 N-GSF ;
27 And G2532 CONJ should sleep G2518 V-PAS-3S , and G2532 CONJ rise G1453 V-PPS-3S night G3571 N-ASF and G2532 CONJ day G2250 N-ASF , and G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-NSM seed G4703 N-NSM should spring G985 V-PAS-3S and G2532 CONJ grow up G3373 V-PPS-3S , he G846 P-NSM knoweth G1492 V-RAI-3S not G3756 PRT-N how G5613 ADV .
28 For G1063 CONJ the G3588 T-NSF earth G1093 N-NSF bringeth forth fruit G2592 V-PAI-3S of herself G844 A-NSF ; first G4412 ADV the blade G5528 N-ASM , then G1534 ADV the ear G4719 N-ASM , after G1534 ADV that the G3588 T-DSM full G4134 A-ASM corn G4621 N-ASM in G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DSM ear G4719 N-DSM .
29 But G1161 CONJ when G3752 CONJ the G3588 T-NSM fruit G2590 N-NSM is brought forth G3860 V-2AAS-3S , immediately G2112 ADV he putteth in G649 V-PAI-3S the G3588 T-ASN sickle G1407 N-ASN , because G3754 CONJ the G3588 T-NSM harvest G2326 N-NSM is come G3936 V-RAI-3S .
30 And G2532 CONJ he said G3004 V-IAI-3S , Whereunto G5101 I-DSM shall we liken G3666 V-AAS-1P the G3588 T-ASF kingdom G932 N-ASF of God G2316 N-GSM ? or G2228 PRT with G1722 PREP what G4169 I-DSF comparison G3850 N-DSF shall we compare G3846 V-2AAS-1P it G846 P-ASF ?
31 It is like G5613 ADV a grain G2848 N-ASM of mustard seed G4615 N-GSN , which G3739 R-NSM , when G3752 CONJ it is sown G4687 V-2APS-3S in G1909 PREP the G3588 T-GSF earth G1093 N-GSF , is G2076 V-PXI-3S less G3398 A-NSM-C than all G3956 A-GPN the G3588 T-GPN seeds G4690 N-GPN that G3588 T-GPN be G2076 V-PXI-3S in G1909 PREP the G3588 T-GSF earth G1093 N-GSF :
32 But G2532 CONJ when G3752 CONJ it is sown G4687 V-2APS-3S , it groweth up G305 V-PAI-3S , and G2532 CONJ becometh G1096 V-PNI-3S greater G3187 A-NSM-C than all G3956 A-GPN herbs G3001 N-GPN , and G2532 CONJ shooteth out G4160 V-PAI-3S great G3173 A-APM branches G2798 N-APM ; so that G5620 CONJ the G3588 T-APN fowls G4071 N-APN of G3588 T-GSM the G3588 T-GSM air G3772 N-GSM may G1410 V-PNN lodge G2681 V-PAN under G5259 PREP the G3588 T-ASF shadow G4639 N-ASF of it G846 P-GSM .
33 And G2532 CONJ with many G4183 A-DPF such G5108 D-DPF parables G3850 N-DPF spake G2980 V-IAI-3S he G3588 T-ASM the G3588 T-ASM word G3056 N-ASM unto them G846 P-DPM , as G2531 ADV they were able G1410 V-INI-3P to hear G191 V-PAN it .
34 But G1161 CONJ without G5565 ADV a parable G3850 N-GSF spake G2980 V-IAI-3S he not G3756 PRT-N unto them G846 P-DPM : and G1161 CONJ when they were alone G2596 PREP , he expounded G1956 V-IAI-3S all things G3956 A-APN to his G3588 T-DPM disciples G3101 N-DPM .
35 And G2532 CONJ the G1722 PREP same G3588 T-DSF day G2250 N-DSF , when the even G3798 A-GSF was come G1096 V-2ADP-GSF , he saith G3004 V-PAI-3S unto them G846 P-DPM , Let us pass over G1330 V-2AAS-1P unto G1519 PREP the G3588 T-ASN other side G4008 ADV .
36 And G2532 CONJ when they had sent away G863 V-2AAP-NPM the G3588 T-ASM multitude G3793 N-ASM , they took G3880 V-PAI-3P him G846 P-ASM even as G5613 ADV he was G2258 V-IXI-3S in G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DSN ship G4143 N-DSN . And G1161 CONJ there were G2258 V-IXI-3S also G2532 CONJ with G3326 PREP him G846 P-GSM other G243 A-NPN little ships G4142 N-NPN .
37 And G2532 CONJ there arose G1096 V-PNI-3S a great G3173 A-NSF storm G2978 N-NSF of G3588 T-NPN wind G417 N-GSM , and G1161 CONJ the G3588 T-NPN waves G2949 N-NPN beat G1911 V-IAI-3S into G1519 PREP the G3588 T-ASN ship G4143 N-ASN , so that G5620 CONJ it G846 P-NSN was now full G1072 V-PPN .
38 And G2532 CONJ he G846 P-NSM was G2258 V-IXI-3S in G1909 PREP the G3588 T-DSF hinder part of the ship G4403 N-DSF , asleep G2518 V-PAP-NSM on G1909 PREP a pillow G4344 N-ASN : and G2532 CONJ they awake G1326 V-PAI-3P him G846 P-ASM , and G2532 CONJ say G3004 V-PAI-3P unto him G846 P-DSM , Master G1320 N-VSM , carest G3199 V-PQI-3S thou G4671 P-2DS not G3756 PRT-N that G3754 CONJ we perish G622 V-PMI-1P ?
39 And G2532 CONJ he arose G1326 V-APP-NSM , and rebuked G2008 V-AAI-3S the G3588 T-DSM wind G417 N-DSM , and G2532 CONJ said G2036 V-2AAI-3S unto the G3588 T-DSF sea G2281 N-DSF , Peace G4623 V-PAM-2S , be still G5392 V-RPM-2S . And G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-NSM wind G417 N-NSM ceased G2869 V-AAI-3S , and G2532 CONJ there was G1096 V-2ADI-3S a great G3173 A-NSF calm G1055 N-NSF .
40 And G2532 CONJ he said G2036 V-2AAI-3S unto them G846 P-DPM , Why G5101 I-NSN are G2075 V-PXI-2P ye so G3779 ADV fearful G1169 A-NPM ? how G4459 ADV-I is it that ye have G2192 V-PAI-2P no G3756 PRT-N faith G4102 N-ASF ?
41 And G2532 CONJ they feared G5399 V-AOI-3P exceedingly G3173 A-ASM , and G2532 CONJ said G3004 V-IAI-3P one to another G240 C-APM , What manner of man G5101 I-NSM is G2076 V-PXI-3S this G3778 D-NSM , that G3754 CONJ even G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-NSM wind G417 N-NSM and G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-NSF sea G2281 N-NSF obey G5219 V-PAI-3P him G846 P-DSM ?
